The Running Thread--2024

I’ve been able to avoid knowing the outcomes of anything until I can watch the replays so far, despite managing social media for a living - kinda feel like I should be awarded a medal for that feat! :rotfl: There’s been a lot of literally covering a screen with my hand to post without seeing the feed.

The men’s triathlon that was supposed to happen this morning was rescheduled due to pollution in the Seine. Now they’re planning to hold both the men’s and women’s tomorrow morning, which seems logistically problematic… but also it’s supposed to rain tonight, which will probably make it MORE polluted with E. Coli. Plan C is to hold them Friday, and Plan D is to ditch the swim and turn it into a duathlon. No alternate location was selected as a backup for the swim.

Can you imagine training and planning for this and having the swim portion canceled because nobody made a plan for an historically polluted river to be too polluted for swimming?! Overall I’m super impressed with every other venue I’ve seen, but this one feels like a massive fail.

I think I’d be pretty pissed if I were a triathlete and they just dropped a whole chunk of my event because of poor planning

This triathlon situation definitely feels like bad planning. Forget the normal level of pollution ... how do you plan to have the triathlon 3 days after all the opening ceremony boats in the same river??

Ya, for all the backup plans, you'd think they would have planned for a backup location.

I cannot imagine the mental preparation that you must have to go through prior to these events, and then to have things rescheduled last minute, and the unknown of what you'll actually be doing must be awful

Question for those that have spent time out at Disneyland. I am taking one of my DDs there for D23 next week and we are staying right off property on Harbor Blvd. I would like to get an early morning run or two done while there if I can (3-4 miles). It looks like I could essenttially run around the outside of the parks in sidewalks (Harbor/Ball Rd./Disneyland Drive/Katella) and get close to 3 miles in a single loop. Is that actually doable at 6am (ish) or do I need to look for other alternatives?

As a side note, while we have been to DisneyWorld more times than I care to count, it feels weird visting a new park for the first time!

To further add insult to the situation, I saw that the decision to postpone the triathlon was made in the middle of the night… so all the athletes did their nutritional and physical training to be at their peak and woke up to learn oops - no race today. Which I think we all get - stuff out of the race organizers’ control happens, like weather. But this was just a real lack of contingency planning for a known situation. The country is FULL of rivers and lakes and coastline - they could have held it elsewhere, as they’re doing for multiple other events.

Yes, that should be possible. I did something very similar when I was there several years ago. Just don't try to run between the park entrances before security opens.

Yeah, it’s wild that surfing is in Tahiti

You mean "French Polynesia"

To be fair in that decision, it looks like an incredibly consistent place to hold the competition for wave quality, setup for TV filming and safety protocols.

It goes along nicely with the fact that the '28 LA games will have softball in Oklahoma. :rotfl2:

I can’t come up with anything clever for ours. I think everything is basically within an hour of Salt Lake City.

I mean an hour without Olympic traffic which I hear is worse than Sundance traffic up here, so, allow me to belt out a weak and sarcastic, “yaaaayyy.” I live next to one venue, and our restaurant is between two other major venues for freestyle.

(Mutters to self) “it’ll be good for business.”

I really shouldn’t be here typing but I’m procrastinating on my strength workout.

I was in SLC during the 2002 games. We lived in the Avenues and I worked downtown. Traffic was DEAD! All the locals were so scared of congestion and parking that NOBODY drove. The light rail was new and everybody used it, so the streets and parking garages were pretty empty even around the medals plaza, sponsor village and Delta Center. It was fantastic! I'm sure your area will be quite different, with mountain roads and less mass transit, but you may be pleasantly surprised.

According to my business partner, traffic was awful in town for the Olympics and Main Street becomes pedestrian only. Even without special events in winter, these days the roads in town and the highway exits are locked up something fierce

True. I used to cover Sundance when I worked at the Trib. Our colleagues at the Park Record would let us park in their lot and we'd take the shuttles. But getting in (even the "local way" via Heber) was always a crapshoot.

That time again already, another good month. Got all my runs in ramping up for a marathon. A little slower pace but kind of expected that in July. August will see a different taper, 14 days of running followed by moving DD into college apartment, then 4 nights on the Wish with the Green River marathon the day after getting back home. We’ll see how that works out.

Good luck with your upcoming marathon and moving your daughter into her college apartment. I'm not certain which one is the more difficult let alone emotionally draining.

July:

Running:
Distance - 30.18 miles
Time - 7:21:08

Walking:
Distance - 28.62 miles (not counting the rest of today)
Time - 12:49:34

Strength:
6 activities
1:23:08

Not bad considering I took an entire week off from working out while on vacation, and didn't run much otherwise. I've started running 4 days a week to build up for marathon training.

Best softball venue in the US, and I’m sure the stadiums will be full making it an excellent environment for playing games - ten times the amount of people vs. UCLA softball stadium. I do realize that it’s not LA, so probably a let down for the players for an Olympic environment.
The canoeing events will also be in Oklahoma.
And OKC is closer to LA than Tahiti is to Paris. 😬
