The Running Thread - 2016

I've been looking at these socks, how do they compare to the other popular ones mentioned here such as balega and feetures? All these socks are so expensive!
I used to run in balegas. Once I tried WrightSocks, I switched forever. Not familiar with feetures.

WrightSocks strong point is blister prevention. They are 2 layers with the idea that the 2 layers rub against each other rather than your foot. I ran the Atlanta Marathon in the pouring rain in WrightSocks without even a hint of a hot spot. (Full disclosure: I generally do not ever have blister problems.)

2 layers sounds bulky, but it is not. They are not very cushy.

SocksAddict runs sales on them periodically. They are also available at REI, if you have REI points.

WrightSocks also make dress socks which are handy for trying on running shoes on a lunch break from the office!

I don't really get running stuff for Christmas, though I have for my birthday in March. For Christmas I get a lot of clothes and Alabama gear. Seems every time we win another championship, my family decides that I need updated Bama gear. So I have a ton of Bama gear. Between championships they buy me WDW stuff. I also have a ton of Disney stuff.

What can I say? My family knows me. :)

I don't use Wrightsocks, but I can comment on the 2 layer philosophy. I have a pair of cleats that I run in for Ultimate Frisbee (similar to soccer in running style/amount) that caused me extensive blisters on the ball of my foot. Using two socks was recommended to me by a teammate and I was skeptical. After trying it, though, it works fantastically. The rubbing is indeed transferred away from the foot to the interface layer between the two socks and I have not had any blisters with those cleats since I started double socking. I don't see why the principle would not apply to a single double-layer sock design for regular running.

IMO, the best socks ever made! worth the ~$10/pair, which makes me want to vomit when I see how many pairs I have. But again, my feet are so happy with them!
Oh gosh sock costs I don't even want to think about. I wear injinji toe socks, so depending on if I can find a deal they are $12-14 a pair. And I changed sizes in the last year so I have a bunch of mediums I can't wear. But yes the feet are happy so I guess that much on socks is worth it!

Looks likely that you will be getting a bunch of new gear again this year. All this talk about Kiffin to LSU wont even matter if it happens, because well Saban. Isnt he ready to start fishing or playing golf.... something other than coach in the SEC! Not that he is the only reason for a sub par season for us this year, but I am very tired of getting our butts kicked. For a moral victory I guess I can say we gave yall a good game, but like Ricky Bobby would say, "If you aint first, your last!".

With that in mind, I am going to go vomit because I am reminded with this discussion who our "new" head coach is.....

QOTD: What is your ideal weather conditions for a race? What is your worse case scenario weather wise for a race?

ATTQOTD: Ideal weather would be 35 at the start, winds out of the north around 5 mph, partly cloudy and low RH (Low for Louisiana). Worse case would be above 75, no wind, 100%RH, and sunny and not a cloud in site.

Its been a busy week at the office so I am running a bit behind with posting our upcoming races for this week. I apologize for the delay. This week we have the following folks with races this week!

03 - @GARUNMOM - Ugly Sweater 5k (NG / N/A)
03 - GARUNMOM - Lights of Life 5k (NG / N/A)
03 - LSUlakes - Baton Rouge Beach Half Marathon (2:00:00 / N/A)
03 - @mrsgryphon - Tinsel Fun Run 2 Miler (NG / N/A)
04 - @RunDisneyDad - San Antonio RnR Half Marathon (1:30:00 / N/A)
04 - @CherieFran - Jingle All the Way 5k (23:50 / N/A)

If you would like to revise your goal or for some reason unable to run this weekend, just let me know and I will make the adjustment. If anyone wants to be added to the list, feel free to let me know and I will add you to the list as well. Good to luck to everyone and have a great race!

I decided to run my half this weekend. It is not going to be pretty, but I wanted to keep the streak alive. This year will be my 5th consecutive run of the BRB1/2. It could also end up being my slowest, but I am not overly concerned about it as I know where I am at training wise.

ATTQOTD: 50 degrees at start and in the 50's steadily throughout the race. Light breeze, humidity under 50%, partly cloudy. Worst would be 75 and up, 80-100% humidity and full sunshine with no breeze.

ETA: @LSUlakes I just realized my worst is almost exactly the same as yours. Must be a "southern" thing?? :crazy2:

Ideal for a race - 35 degrees for 5k-10k, 45 degrees for 13.1 - 26.2. :cloud9:

Worst conditions for a race or training run of any distance would be 30-35 and heavy rain. :cold:

I also do not like to race in really hot and humid conditions, but I don't mind training runs in those conditions. :scared:

I forgot I listed that race. I ended up not signing up for it. Hubby is running it and I'm "babysitting" the kiddo at home where it's warm. I will end up running this weekend, just no race.

Attqotd:
Perfect: 55-65 degrees, cloudy, light nice breeze but no major wind, not humid.
Worst: hailing (that sounds bad) OR 95+, humid and too sunny.

I've gotten a little better at being prepared for cold conditions before a race, so 40-50 with no wind is probably ideal for me. Worst case is cold, wet, and slick. It's both uncomfortable and brings a greater risk of injury into play. Hot weather isn't fun, but it can be managed and as long as I approach it intelligently doesn't bring in an increased chance of injury.

I wear WrightSocks with my soccer cleats, the dual layer definitely helps with blisters (cleats are usually really tight to the foot). For running, Im' a SmartWool PhD Run Ultralight guy. They don't last as long as I would like, but they are the best mix of comfort, wicking, and thinness that I've found

I never use headphones running outside, but do want them for the treadmill/gym. But I had problems here in ultra-dry Colorado where I would get a constant static discharge through the headphones into my ear (ouch!). So I got some Bluetooth Jaybird X2's and this handy little Bluetooth transmitter for the gym. I've even used it plugged into my tiny Ipod Nano, which is far smaller than taking a phone along

Thats kind of my problem. I need/want them for the gym to watch TV so I need wired and I hate running with my cell phone. I live in the south so my running attire 10 months out of the year consists of shorts, shoes and a hat. Socks only if it's over 6 miles. So the thought of carrying my phone is kinda intimidating.

Now I just sounds like a whiney baby.
