The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: My mother (who's the only person buying my gifts, since my son is still too young to do it himself) is notorious for buying me random stuff I neither want nor need, so a few years ago I started emailing her direct links to exactly what I hoped to receive (my bday is also shortly after Xmas, when shelves have been cleared, so I learned early on to make a combination Xmas/Bday wish list...) - everyone's happier now lol! No running stuff for me this year, but in previous years I've received running skirts, a clip-on light, socks and hats/visors. Nothing unusual, unless we count the furry pillows that look like roadkill on my sofa...

ATTQOTD: I want the new beats 3 headphones with 12 hour battery life. My current ones only have a 5 hour battery life, which so far has worked (except for Wine and Dine, where they mysteriously died early for no reason) but will not work for Dopey.

Mine mysteriously die at California races. However, the only thing they have in common is the screeching of Carissa, so I just blame her.

Thanks :)

I am not offended. Sometimes I feel really bad that I am slow when I finish a half in like 2:50 or 3 hours, but then I try and remind myself of this. Some of the people that I am so in awe of that finish the race and their cooldown runs before I am even close to being done maybe have never even run as long as I am. It's really hard to be focused and keep moving for that long. :) I know it's not quite the same as a 6 hour marathon, but it's still hard. :)

I guess if we're doing math(leave that to @DopeyBadger though) your half time kind of is the same thing. :) And I equally admire that. :)

ATTQOTD: the only person who buys me Christmas presents is myself and myself is a cheap bastard, so I don't ask him for much. :)

Re: cadence, stride length, etc... iSmoothRun spits out my average cadence and stride length and run/walk, so the walking is included in that average. I manually count cadence while running, though, and at an easy, warm-up/cool down pace for me (around a 12:00/mi), I'm right about 180. Pick it up to where I hang for most of my comfortable long run (around 11:00/mi) and my cadence comes up to around 196-198. If I'm truly racing, my cadence doesn't change much, but my rear kick lengthens as my pace speeds up. No idea what my running stride length is, since my app includes walking, but my overall run/walk average ranges from 2.3-2.5 feet, getting closer to 3' if I'm doing speed work. I'm 5'1" tall, so short legs, yes! I'll sometimes spot a tall person running ahead of me and match his/her pace, then count our steps... I'm easily taking 1.5-2+ steps to each one of a 6'+ tall person.

Speaking of headphones....I hate ear buds. I don't dislike them (you know like traffic or the flu), I hate them (like cancer or people that go through the express line with 20 items).

For years I ran in a very basic set of Sony over the head headphones. They would last a couple months, get drenched with sweat and I would throw them away. Well, I haven't used headphones in quite some time but with come scheduling changes I'm going to be doing more treadmill running than I am used to. Well, I head on over to Amazon to pick me up a new pair and these puppies (used to cost about $12) are $92.....yes, thats right....$92.

Koss makes a set I can order from Wal Mart that I am going to try but this is ridiculous.

$92 doesn't seem like a lot for modern day headphones. Beats and most name brand headphones run well over $100 nowadays.

These aren't modern day headphones. These are the same pieces of junk i bought for $12 three years ago.
Could be simple supply and demand. They might not make a lot of these older non modern headphones and thats why they might have a higher price.

I'm right there with you on hating earbuds. I can't stand anything that I have to stick IN my ears and spent a lot of time looking for a good replacement. Have you looked at Trekz Titanium headphones? They are Bluetooth, so no wires to get caught up in and they actually use bone conductivity to deliver the sound to the small bones in the ear. They sit just in front of the ears and use the cheekbones as a sound transmitter. They are a bit more cost-wise, but you get to be wireless and I consider not having the ears covered or plugged up as a nice safety feature when running out in the world.

They are Bluetooth

Thats kind of my problem. I need/want them for the gym to watch TV so I need wired and I hate running with my cell phone. I live in the south so my running attire 10 months out of the year consists of shorts, shoes and a hat. Socks only if it's over 6 miles. So the thought of carrying my phone is kinda intimidating.

Now I just sounds like a whiney baby.

Wow, those are interesting! I agree that I don't like buds either because my left ear hole is oddly shaped so I find that every brand I've tried it never stays in well. These would be a nice alternative. Maybe next christmas though...

Okay, another quick question...anyone familiar with Nassau. Looking for a morning run the morning we are there for our Disney Cruise.

Any issues with safety here?

Yup, my MIL walks a bit faster than 12:30/mile!

Wow! If I'm really trucking, I can do 15. Though, I am still injured, so I walk like a grandma.

Yeah no expert here either, as said above to slow your cadence you want to lengthen your stride, which be careful as stepping farther ahead of your body can cause knee/other joint pain (best form is landing under you as far as I've read). Personally I think your times are already really fast so I wouldn't say right now you are inefficient at all. I know other fast runners that look almost like they are walking that have fast turnovers/cadence. Also, I think height comes into play too, like shorter legs usually are quicker turnovers, which to me isn't a bad thing and can be a good thing for fast times. Are you wanting to slow your pace then? Again I'm no expert so take my ramblings with a grain of salt, just trying to wrap my head around wanting to do this I guess.

Yes, IT. IS. HARD! I did the WDW marathon 2016 in 6:50, so under 16:00 barely (I had to have that goal or I would have just curled up & quit), but that included a little jogging/shuffling here and there too. So, when people say "Oh I'll just walk it", I'm like it's not easy, get the muscles ready now. I wanted to just run so bad during it to switch muscles, but that just was not happening. Like my quads/hamstrings weren't sore at all like they usually are from running.

No kidding! I suppose if you walk really slowly, it isn't quite the same, but then it will just take you longer. 8 hours of continuous motion might kill me.

I hope nothing I say here offends anyone but I've always had a special admiration for back of the pack runners/walkers. Yes we are all amazed at the elites and anyone who finishes any race is awesome. But I always admire people who have the dedication to be out there for say 6 hours for a marathon. That's a long time to be doing one thing continuously, especially one athletic event. I honestly don't know if I could do it. It's always great to see those folks cross the finish line.

Not offended at all! I think it is a very nice thing to say. :)

QOTD: Before we know it Christmas will be here. For those shopping for a gift for you and they want to get you something for running what items do you suggest for them to purchase? What are some odd running gifts you have received?

My mom is the only one who buys me running-related gifts. She is awesome, so she just goes shopping with me and lets me pick it out.

Even with a GPS, I still carry my phone when running. Good thing to do for safety. :)

Agreed. I don't go anywhere without my phone.
