QOTD: It's the end of the month. What is your monthly mileage for November?

November Training Summary
Total Miles: 111.3 miles
Total Time: 15:55:43
Average Pace: 8:35/mi
Average HR: 147/min

I missed a few runs this month, but I viewed this month as an unstructured base/rebuilding phase, so not a problem. My next training cycle starts mid-December, so my mileage (and consistency) should start to pick up.

ATTQOTD: 57- I'm definitely not going to break records with that total, but I have to say it was kind of a nice month-- I looked forward to my 3 mile runs every time! I'm still trying to figure out what my winter running goals are going to be, but they may just stay the same and then ramp up for races in the spring.

November Mileage Report
(Completed/Scheduled)
Running Miles - 224.7/230.7 (97%)
Running Duration - 31:46:28/32:47:33 (97%)
Average Pace - 8:29 min/mile
HR Average - 139 bpm (Roughly 61% of my Heart Rate Reserve) *PS - Hooray for HR stats!

Happy with the stats! I came into the month not knowing what to expect my body would give me after the October marathon and the pain I was in. I decided to play it by ear and a few of the runs in the beginning of the month I lowered the mileage and slowed the pace. Overall though a very solid training month. And given my more cautious and smart approach I am in the best shape of my life. These last few runs this past week have truly been magical (even without being in Disney World). Here's a link to my latest entry about the last week of training.

Are there things that are widely accepted as the norm or consensus opinion when it comes to running that you do not buy into? What are they? For example.... running hills at a steady effort rather than a steady pace... not sure how the heart rate people out there would answer this one?

ATTQOTD: A break a lot of the "rules" I guess. One is nothing new on race day (within reason). I've worn parts of costumes for the first time on race day. I've also worm new sparkle skirts, tops, etc. but these I at least know how will fit. I also don't have a set thing I will eat the night before (also within reason), particularly on Disney race weekends. Also, if I'm feeling sore or otherwise shot I will not hesitate to skip a maintenance run for an extra day of rest if my body is telling me I need it. I view the training plan as a guideline. I run hills as best I can do them. Sometimes that means powering up it, sometimes that means taking the walk break at that point.

Fuel ON race day though, that is a set thing I stick to. After some experimentation, what I like now is Tailwind and granola bar before, alternate salted caramel gu and margarita shot blocks during. And no on course power aide. I did this by accident on Thanksgiving and my stomach did not like me.

November Training Summary

This month's mileage is skewed way low from running my marathon early in the month followed by two weeks of recovery time. I missed two training runs this month in my taper getting a flare up of Achilles tendinopathy under control prior to the marathon. That was balanced a bit by running an illicit "5k" (2.94 miles, really) at work during my recovery time. On the bright side, I've pretty definitively linked these Achilles flares to disc golf tournaments. It seems that the Achilles doesn't particularly like the sometimes rugged terrain and hills of the courses. At least now I know to separate my tournaments from my races going forward...

Cool, we need a group picture of us on the board that will be at Houston.

Yeah, this weekend is not looking so hot for the long runs (I have 26 miles planned over Sat and Sun). Since the Houston weather people are already talking up the rain for the weekend, I am hoping they are as wrong as the usually are!
Yes, I've been hoping for the wild inaccurate forecast to play out but it seems to get worse as the week goes on. Fingers crossed.

Guess I can't just use someone's answer for QOTD. Darn. 117 miles after a 3 mile run this evening. November was the end of what seemed like the longest training cycle ever but it paid off.

Anyone ever tried to change(increase) their cadence? Geez that's hard to do without really thinking about it.

I did over the course of several months/years. I agree it felt unnatural and required a lot of focus in the beginning. My body has since adapted and now it feels more natural. Although, now I'm trying to go through another change slowly.

Every time I've tried to increase my cadence my knees start to hurt. Given my history with knee surgery I've decided to leave my cadence alone.

ATTQOTD:
My last big race was at the very end of October. So I literally have no idea my mileage for November!?? I do a terrible job of keeping track when the treadmill months are upon me...since my garmin just has my outdoor miles on it...and I've been running by time not miles lately.
So I bought a 17 month 2017 planner and it's arriving tomorrow in the mail. Gonna get serious about being more organized with my stats, especially during the floaty periods between training plans.
I want to get AT LEAST 48.6 miles in December (my version of Dopey) and I'm just going to see how soon I get there.

Stats fail for the month!

ATTQOTD: Hmm... I'm a vocal supporter of "nothing new on race day!" - but I've totally worn new shirts/skirts/capris/shoes on race day, lol!
For me this is a do as I say not as I do. I know I shouldn't and yet, I had the little gummies that Skratch makes before a 10 miler. They were delicious and sat well with me but I could have seen it going the opposite way.

QOTD: It's the end of the month. What is your monthly mileage for November?
Ran this morning for a total of 18.5 miles. All miles obtained after the 14th with most being after the 24th when I started the Thanksgiving-New Years streak attempt. I also have 1.25 miles of swimming completed. For December I want to try and keep my streak going for as long as possible. It's just something new for me to try. No mile goals beyond 31 (at least one for every day) so we'll see how it goes.

The reason you want to race as you train is because of how the body adapts to the training. By using a run/walk training system you will get very good at run/walk. You will improve your lactate threshold clearance allowing you to run longer distances. But if you choose to continuous run during the race, or choose to change your intervals, then you're no longer using the skill set you trained for. Now you instead are using muscles differently, not allowing rest, and relying on your running economy (or ability to maintain your lactate threshold at a set pace). Because these things haven't been maximized during training then you might not do as well on race day (especially in a marathon) as you could if you just stick to what your training adapted your body to.
I just want to piggy back on this and say that the reverse is true, too: if you train to run or to run/walk and then decide to only walk (or even mostly walk) the race, it HURTS! BT/DT. Didn't have a choice, since ITBS nailed me early in my first long distance race, but I have never been more sore after a race than I was after walking most of that one, since I'd trained to run/walk. Found muscles I never knew I had lol!

ATTQOTD: 90ish miles here for November

Agreed! I ran a race several years ago with a friend. It was 5 miles and her pace was around a 11:30 min/mile. I was more sore after that run then many of the runs I did much faster or much further solely because I used a lot of muscles differently then I ever had in training.

ATTQOTD: I've got 4 miles this afternoon, but I'm at 66.5 so far in ~13:31, which works to an average pace of ~12:11/mile. I returned to running on 11/7 after taking all of October off with shin splints. Had I been able to follow my plan, November would have been a record month for me. As it stands, it looks like it'll be my second highest mileage (after September 2016). If I can stick to the plan, December should be higher.

Yes! I completely agree! My MIL is a big speed walker (does about 5 or 6 miles a day) and when I'm visiting and I join her on her walks, my shins are on fire by the end!

Also, just have to share my good news that I bought our WDW tickets and memory maker this morning for mini January trip! I called the WDW number since I had multiple gifts cards to use, and I had forgotten how much I missed that scratchy, poor quality Disney music they play when your are on hold with them!! :D :D :D

Nov = 91 miles here (included WDW week trip with only running during the wine & dine races and not a lot the week i got back). My next races are Darkside so my plan is just maintain till then, this winter cold thing always throws a wrench in running, I get out in it, but what I do is dictated by if I'm freezing or not or if there's that snow thing...which none yet at least.
