The Running Thread - 2016

A few non running related questions:
1. Any good WDW or Walt Disney book recommendations?
2. What makes a annual pass worth it? Benefits? Discussions have taken place on the 10 hours in the car Sunday... Looking for talking points on this.
3. FSU fans, what is the local media saying about Jimbo to LSU talk?

TIA!
1. Maps of Disney Parks (This is all Disney parks though), unofficial guide to Walt Disney World, Walt Disney: An American Original.
2. I can't speak for that since I don't have one but there are different annual passes you could buy.
Platinum Plus- Admission to all of WDW (parks, water parks, golf, WWoS), no blackout dates, parking included, photopass
Platinum- no blackout dates for all four parks, parking included, photopass
Gold Pass for DVC and Florida residents only
You have to look at how many times in a year you would visit and when your break even point would be.

It's excellent. Long but well worth it.

I actually have the audiobook of it!

He used to be on WDW Radio podcasts and has so much detailed knowledge. I just found him on another podcast recently - The Sweep Spot. Hosted by two guys who used to be in custodial at DL.

I was actually just going to suggest the WDW Radio podcast for anyone who likes Jim Korkis.

I've heard Korkis interviews on a couple podcasts I listen to. He writes articles for allears sometimes too.

We have annual passes and find them worth it for quick trips over to Disney for a day or night. It helps that our house in Florida is not too far from Orlando. We get the cheap pass, the one with the blackout dates, because there's no way we're going to WDW around Christmas or during a school break.

We got APs once because of the big hotel discount before a long 10 day trip. It was 2001, the year we stayed at the BWI. It cracks me up now but I can remember the rack rate there (during Food & Wine) was ~$315 a night and with the AP discount we were getting it down around $285. We ended up using it again for 5 or 6 days at AKL less than a year later to get some more use out of it.

We should have gotten them again last year-ish. We had a 12/2014 trip already planned, then I decided to do Tink 2015, and then I decided to register for W&D while I was Tink training, so we went back to WDW in less than a year again. But the 12/2014 trip had already happened with regular tickets.

Good morning folks! I am trying to catch up from last week and update the OP and respond to at least the QOTD at some point today. The trip was amazing and I hope to make a trip report in the coming days. I brought home some cinnamon rolls from Gaston's Tavern, so I am about to eat one of those while I continue to catch up. A lot of good QOTD's folks! Thanks for keeping things going!!! Got home at 10 PM last night, so I am struggling after a long drive, but it was all worth it.

QOTD: Vacation and running, are you able to stick to your plan during a trip?

For the most part, yes. Best thing for us is to schedule the race early on in the vacation!

We get APs anytime we have 2 trips planned in a years time. There's an exact number of days I think for when it becomes better to get an AP, but can't remember off the top of my head. We live in Nebraska too so it's not like we can just hop over anytime so it takes a little long term planning to decide on the AP.

Getting Photopass included is a very nice benefit now, hopefully it stays, I know many runners area taking advantage of it by downloading others bibs so hopefully that won't hinder it for the rest of us.

The limited time 20% off merch and some restaurants was very nice a few weeks ago too put in place for the 45th anniversary.

At the flower & garden (an artwork picture) and Food & wine (cup) there was an AP gift if you went to EPCOT 3 times. AP holders also have access to special merch, like the shirts or pins at events.

I think for special event parties (Halloween, Christmas, the villains dinner one) there is a small AP discount (might be select nights)

There are room discounts too which may or may not be better the public discounts.

Early RUnDisney registration has been nice too.

But like said above we decide purely on if we'll go enough days to warrant it, otherwise those benefits can change. We don't get the water park included one either as we haven't been going when we would take advantage of hot weather for a waterpark.

QOTD: Who is your personal running hero? By this I don't mean Meb or Pre or even Forrest Gump...I mean who is the person in your life that inspires you and makes you want to get out running yourself. This could be the person who first introduced you to running or someone you met along the way of your running journey...it's your hero so you can make up the rules :)
Oh gosh. I mean, currently, I run for myself. I am inspired to do it for myself because I have seen the benefits. I have enough motivation for that right now. That being said, I am inspired to go faster, farther, and try new things by you guys and a few friends and family members. I always read everyone's times and the amount they ran in a month and want to do more the next month (not this month though, I'm still recovering). @Keels and @FFigawi especially encouraged me to push farther. I never had any interest in doing Dopey until I saw Keels get roped in and enjoy it (is that the right term?) enough to do it again. I also have a cousin who encouraged me to do the C25K before I ever started running, friends who ran Disney and made me think "I want to do that" so much that I did, and an aunt who did a tri for the first time at 59 and made me want to do one too.

QOTD: “WOULD YOU RATHER”: DIS-RUNNER EDITION! Answer A or B (reasoning welcome)

Race in thick jeans OR An itchy wool sweater - I can run in jeans. I have thick jeans that are comfortable. I would probably cry if I had to wear an itchy sweater to run.

Free entries+flights to races for a year OR Free shoes for a year (you can stockpile!) - I would have to buy a lot of shoes to match the amount of free I would get out of entries/flights in a year

Harassed by bees OR Chased by an angry Chihuahua - Bees sting and I could at least keep good running form with a Chihuahua chasing me, bees would make me dodge and break form.

Race through WDW with no characters OR Race at home with Disney characters - I like the scenery at Disney. The characters are great and all but it's the on course support from the cast and the view of the parks that makes it for me. A caveat would be if the race was in 100F weather, then I would be all about running at home.

GPS runs out of batteries pre-race OR Drop your headphones in the porta-potty - I could survive without either if I had to but I generally don't use my headphones for shorter races and even when I use them I could always live without them.

Bonus Dole Whip Aid Stations OR Bonus Mickey Waffle Aid Stations - My body would process waffles better during a race. Dole Whip would mean hitting a port-a-potty.

“We’ve run out of free food” OR “We’ve run out of free beer” - It's okay, I wanted wine anyway. I mean, I'll always take free beer but I'm a foodie at heart.

Uphill course with perfect weather OR Downhill course and 100+F heat - Hills? I don't love them but I don't hate them. I wilt in the heat though.

Last place in the Olympics vs First place at every small local race this year - The Olympics would be such a cool experience. I'd be happy to be last if it meant going.

Straight out and back marathon with no scenery OR 26+ one mile laps - I hate laps. No scenery is better than laps.

Only Winter training for a Spring race OR Summer training for a Fall race - You can bundle up to run in the winter but there's only so many layers you can take off before you chafe or get arrested. I'll sacrifice the speed gained over the summer if it means I don't have to run in the heat.

Blink in every picture but your form looks perfect OR Face looks great but form is schlumpy mess - I have enough of the former. I make a really awful face when I run (to the point where I now make sure to smile if I see people with cameras I smile. The face is difficult to describe. It's kind of like one side of my mouth is open to breath and the other side my bottom lip is pushed up. It's just so bad. I will accept schlumpy mess because at worst I could photoshop it with the ones I already have of my good running form.

Handed only money at every aid station OR get charged for water&fuel at every aid station - I generally carry my fuel and I own a camelbak that I could carry if necessary so I'll take the money.

WDW triathlon 2018 or WDW marathon team relay 2018 - My friends aren't going down to do a tri with me but we'd have a great time doing a relay.

Wear a red sparkle skirt OR A pink sparkle visor - The red sparkle skirt is important to a good race. Just as @FFigawi and @DopeyBadger

QOTD: I don't think we have answered this one here before but what was your first race? What was the distance? Where was it? Anything else special about it?
I mean, the first race I was in was at 5 at my elementary school. The first race I ran was at a winery. It was a 5k, I was coming off a Disney cruise from Europe. I had gotten in the day before. I ran it. The whole thing and was very proud of my 46 minute and change time because it was sub 16 min/mi.

QOTD: Vacation and running, are you able to stick to your plan during a trip?
Yes, if that plan is not running.

I am definitely a Glider. :D I glide so much that I might be called a Shuffler.
I am very similar. I can it plodding though, it's less graceful.

A few non running related questions:
2. What makes a annual pass worth it? Benefits? Discussions have taken place on the 10 hours in the car Sunday... Looking for talking points on this.
This is the only one I can answer. It is worth it when the price of the annual pass is less than the price park tickets for the amount of time you intend to spend in Disney parks in a year. It usually is about 10 days for the WDW pass if you normally get park hoppers I believe? My friend usually does it when she's doing two races less than a year apart such as Princess 2017 and Marathon 2018 and spending days in the park before/after the races.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Very helpful information on the books and AP! I am going to do a little more research on it today if I get a chance. I think this last trip was so successful that DW is open to multiple trips a year, but we also decided on something else that would limit trips for a while.

QOTD: Anyone doing a Turkey Trot of similar type race this week? Since it is Thanksgiving, what is something you are thankful for that you would like to share with the group? Todays QOTD is a great suggestion by a fellow poster of this forum. Thanks for the suggestion!

ATTQOTD: I am in no shape to run a race currently. As I mentioned yesterday, I am still dealing with a cold that seems to be getting worse again :( and I don't have the training to get a good race in. I am even debating not running my half in January... I am thankful for the sweet little girl at home that calls me daddy. She puts a smile on my face everyday!

No race this week as I'll be up north in Wisconsin hunting and then thanksgiving at my uncles.

This will be our first thanksgiving without my grandma so it will be interesting to see how it goes. So with that said I'm thankful for family. This running thread is also essentially one big family, we all interact really well, have fun, and help each other out. So I'm also thankful for this wonderful community we have.

ATTQOTD(s)....If I am driving to a destination I always pack my running gear and try to stay on schedule. If I fly, typically don't have the room or time to get in my runs. Have to be smarter about that...this summer I doubled up on some of my runs for two weeks to try and get ahead and ended up overdoing it and getting injured.

As far as my running stride....I have shortened my stride this year and am probably somewhere between a glide and a gazelle. I call it a 'slog."

ATTQOTD: Turkey trot. Never done an "official" event but try to drag the family out of the house to do a 3.1 mile jog around the neighborhood and then we go eat turkey, watch football, and lay on furniture the rest of the day. Basically the lifestyle that my dogs live every day.

Truth!

No race for me. They don't really celebrate Thanksgiving over here. On the thankful side, I'm thankful for all the great friends I've made on this board.

ATTQOTD: I was going to do a Turkey trot but we decided to visit family out of town this year and I can't find one in their area. @LSUlakes can you please remove my race this week Thanks!

I am thankful for @DopeyBadger and his running plan for me. I know I have thanked him a million times but I can't say it enough. With his plan my leg has been feeling better, I am more confident and running has become more enjoyable.

Yesterday's ATTQOTD: I follow my plan on vacations. It is not easy, especially when I was in Vegas a week or so ago. The morning after the half I just wanted to sleep in and then get on my flight home but I knew I would regret it. It will all be worth it when I have that Dopey medal around my neck.

ATTQOTD: We do our annual turkey trot almost every year with our kids. They act like they hate it, but I actually think they don't mind it that much. It's just a fun run 5K for us. Kids set the pace. I've got about a million things to be thankful for, so hard to narrow it down to one. But, I guess my health and my family have to be the two biggest things.

I'm running the 5 miler in Cleveland on Thursday. Not racing it at all, just getting some miles in.

I'm thankful to be able to spend time with my family, both over Thanksgiving and in a month and a half at Disney.
