The Running Thread - 2016

Nothing but water. I used to drink Coke Zero, but I've cut that out as part of this year's training & nutrition plan.

I too have given up the soda! It is proving tough, and I am drinking a club soda a day just to feel like I am getting a bubble fix, but I haven't had a soda for nearly two months. I actually went to have one a few weeks back, had a sip and suddenly craved water, so I think I am finally at a point where my body doesn't want it anymore.

QOTD: What is your favorite coffee or morning beverage?

Water or chocolate milk post-workout for me. The only other thing I drink on an occasion is a carb/electrolyte drink for carb loading. Otherwise, I haven't had any soda, coffee, juice, or alcohol in several years (maybe 5?).

QOTD: Do you normally run your long run on Saturday, Sunday, or some other day of the week? What's the reason for your choice?

ATTQOTD: Usually on Saturday mornings because it opens up the second half of the weekend and allows for more family time.

QOTD: Do you normally run your long run on Saturday, Sunday, or some other day of the week? What's the reason for your choice?

Friday. It's the first day of my weekend. In looking at Training Peaks for the next month, I think that's going to change though. My coach is putting my long rides on Friday & long runs on Saturday.

During a training cycle it varies between Sunday or Thursday. Part of the Hansons training philosophy is based on how a training week represents the marathon itself. The weekly cycle runs Thursday-Tuesday.

Wednesday - Off
Thursday - Marathon tempo (simulating rested state and early miles of the marathon)
Friday - Easy
Saturday - Easy
Sunday - Long Run (simulating the later half of the marathon)
Monday - Easy
Tuesday - Speed/Strength (simulating the necessary kick and final miles of fatigue)
Wednesday - Off

During most of the training cycle, Sunday is the longest day. However, towards the end of the training cycle the Thursday tempo can increase beyond the Sunday Long Run.

QOTD: Do you normally run your long run on Saturday, Sunday, or some other day of the week? What's the reason for your choice?

Sunday as its my solo day off from my husband who while supportive feels days off, since our work schedules clash the rest of the week, are togetherness days so I try to not run longer than 45 min those days..

QOTD: Do you normally run your long run on Saturday, Sunday, or some other day of the week? What's the reason for your choice?.

Saturday. It works well with the Higdon's training plans and leaves Sunday available to play Ultimate Frisbee in a local pickup game as cross-training.

QOTD: Do you normally run your long run on Saturday, Sunday, or some other day of the week? What's the reason for your choice?

My long runs tend to be Saturday because I can get it done and have most of the rest of the weekend to do other things.

I'm really excited about the races I have planned this year! SW Half Marathon weekend was amazing (my first Run Disney race) and I've got 4 more halfs planned this year! A year ago I never would have thought I would run 5 halfs in a year, as I didn't finish my first half until May last year and thought beforehand it would be a one-time thing for me! Once I realized I could finish a half in one piece, it became an addiction to run more!

@roxymama! I'm thinking about the Flying Pig 3-Way as well! One of my best guy friends and his family live in Cincy and it would be a great chance to see them again.
Oh if you do I will need to try to meet you! I'm for sure doing the 10k and 5k but I'm still scared of the half and will need some more time to decide. I think my family would support me if I did it...but I've never even done a 10k yet! But the plaque and medals are just almost to cute! I have a bling problem!

Qotd: I have one coffee per day and I enjoy having only like 4oz coffee and 4oz milk...bc I'm a baby that can't drink it black. Once a week I'll treat myself to a medium Dunkin with cream and sugar and a flavor.

Qotd: my long runs are usually Sunday, but sat works too. My hubby runs so we have to tag on and off while the other one hangs with the kiddo. I ran today in 27 degree cold :)

Cool race news: my hubby found out a brewery in Hammond, IN on super bowl morning is selling a limited edition beer for $20...but you have to run/walk a 5k at 10:30am and its first com first serve. His buddy collects beers and is gonna walk and have him run. I don't care about beer but I kinda want to try to pass guys for the hey of it...but I'll probably be on babysit duty at home that morning :)

QOTD: What race is on your bucket list?
ATTQOTD: Currently, Dopey 2018 is primary (along with everyone else here). Beyond that, I've got a few others out there on my list, just haven't figured out which one to tackle next.

1/22/16 QOTD: Do you display running items in your house or office? If so, give us a description of your set up.

ATTQOTD: I keep all my medals on display above my desk at work. It's a constant reminder every time I get up of what I can accomplish PLUS the added "coolness quotient" for when my students come in and see what their "old" teacher has done.

QOTD: What is your favorite coffee or morning beverage?

ATTQOTD: Pretty much the same thing every day - strawberry protein smoothie, 34 oz of water and then my treat - coffee with some fru fru creamer.

QOTD: Do you normally run your long run on Saturday, Sunday, or some other day of the week? What's the reason for your choice?

ATTQOTD: I had been doing Sunday since DH was also training and he would do his long runs on Saturday. My personally preference is Saturday though, so I'm going to see about convincing him to switch.

Traditionally I have done my long runs on Sundays most of the year, Saturday's in the winter due to skiing. But this training cycle I'm running into a lot of weekend scheduling issues, so I've been mostly doing them on Friday. Did one today though. No skiing today thanks to Patriots having the early game and I was too sick on Friday to head out.

ATTQOTD: Long runs are usually Saturday with my running club. Every once in a while we will do a Sunday.

When I trained for the marathon a year ago, all of my runs were between 7 to 10 miles. Only did 11 once.

If everything goes well I can begin running again sometime in March. That represents a 14 week break in running for me - something that I have not experienced in too many years for it to matter. I have no idea how my body will react to that kind of break, so I have no plans to race in 2016. My goal is to get myself ready for the 2017 Dopey and use the same PoT race that I used when I registered for the Dopey this year before deferring.

I have some ideas for bucket list races, but the stress fractures in my foot have caused me to slow down and see how this recovery goes, then reassess. I like physical challenges, but I need to see how well I heal and stay healed.

For other questions posed:

* I do not display any medals or running trophies.
* I drink a cup of instant coffee every morning with one sugar and International Delight flavored creamer.
* I run long on Saturday and Sunday, with my longest long run on Sunday. This is necessary with my work schedule - weekend long runs.

ETA - I am in the lottery for the NYC Marathon, but will not run that for time if I make it.
