The Poly Pool Gate Debate

As would I. I'm on vacation and not worried about monitoring others or trying to prevent someone from accessing a pool. Why would I slam a gate shut when someone is standing there to get in? That would strike me as pretty rude.

I'm honestly not worried about it. And I doubt most people are either when they see the crowd. It's just a very specific question.

Without it, none of the posters are going about their vacation worried about being the pool police. If someone would close the door, they'll close it and go swim. It's not critical. I don't think Disney cares what we would do one way or another.

I didn't think it was that hard to understand.

When I'm on vacation, especially in Disney, it's pretty much about enjoying myself and letting go of worries and minor angers. If someone was specifically rude to me, I would likely be upset, though most of that sort of thing (like people cutting in line in front of you) is usually just a mistake on the other person's behalf that they are happy to correct should I point it out. And when they say sorry, I reply, "No worries!" And I mean it! So as far as the Poly pool, I'm not the pool police, I don't want to be the pool police, and I don't want to spend my time poolside worrying if someone is there "illegally."

I say, enjoy yourself, and don't worry about what other people are doing. And yes, that means I'd hold open the gate--probably with a smile.

I'd like to say I would let it close, but I'm too nice. It does upset me though. Last Sept we stayed at GF and I KNOW all those people were not resort guests at the pools. Very upsetting to be unable to find some pool chair to relax and watch your kiddos play because there are pool crashers abusing the system. I agree all MK resorts should be gated and MB entrance only.

Just out of curiosity....how would you KNOW that people at GF were pool crashers?

A great big ditto! I'm there to relax not check for pool crashers. I like the honor system. If there are people who abuse it, let Disney handle it, or not. How extreme are we going to get with the gate. If my family of five wants to get in...do we close the gate after each member uses their MB, just to be sure we don't have an extra tagalong kid, who may be staying at another resort....maybe a cousin or a friend. I don't plan on policing the gate. I do understand that someone would be upset if there are no chairs available and PERHAPS there is someone there who is not a paying guest, but I"m not going around checking bands. I think if the pool is that crowded, then the staff can do a random check on those days. That would be one way to handle it....or if someone goes up to them to complain there are no chairs and or you suspect or overheard someone say they were not staying there. Let's try to be reasonable about the whole thing...not over the top!

It amazes me that families actually do this? I can't imagine packing up all my beach gear and family and traveling to another pool when there is a pool steps away at my own resort. SMH...

When we were their the summer if 2013, we saw quite a few pool crashes. We were there for 10 days/2 weekends. We had 5 pool days during that time frame.

The staff only came on the weekend to ask for our room key and handed a bracelet so to me it seemed more quiet on those days then it did on the week day days when they didn't ask.

Anyways, one of the days they weekend days we were at the pool and the bracelet police were out, we watched a mom, dad and s few kids with a stroller, cooler, and big bag land at a table that just got emptied. A few minutes later, we watched those same parents call their kids out if the pool and leave.

It sucks for the kids because they didn't know they were doing something wrong and they just wanted to swim.

On my pool days I was out there by 8 and sitting at a table and swimming in the very quiet, peaceful empty pool watching the seven seas lagoon wake up and its surroundings. But I snagged my table in the shade...oh so peaceful...I am drifting off topic.

So I for one am glad there are gates but I wish they were prettier. The few pictures I have seen they just look like a brown cage, at least they could of Disney dressed them up to look like foliage.

I honestly feel that the Poly should have a CM checking wristbands just like they do over at SAB - this would eliminate any pool hopping issues period! And for anyone questioning whether or not this actually happens, I can confirm first-hand it does and it was a major issue last August at the GF. Can't even tell you how many times we couldn't get a single pool chair because they were being occupied by guests from other resorts and these folks were literally "bragging" about how easy it was to get in. One father kept "coaching" his kids on what to say if anyone asked them where they were staying and they alone were occuping three loungers! We saw this over and over again the entire 9 days we were there and what was upsetting most was the CM's at the GF seemed to care less and did nothing about it when it was brought to their attention. I can tell you there were quite a few "heated" GF guests last year because of all this.

I'm one of the folks who really could care less about what others do while I'm on vacation, BUT I do have a HUGE issue with not being able to enjoy an amenity that I paid for...sorry!

Reports are that the gate at the new Poly pool is functional and keeping out pool crashers that are not guests at the resort.

If you saw a crowd hovering around the gate as you were about to enter, do you let them in or are you sure to close the gate behind you, keeping them out?

Personally, I wouldn't necessarily slam the gate behind me, but I would be sure that the Poly pool staff would be made aware of who they were and have them scan their bands.

I paid to stay here and if you didn't, tough. Go use your own pool.

I stayed there last week and made a point not to use a gate where anyone was waiting--there are multiple gates. Granted, I only saw that one time...but that was the way I handled it. Another possible way to handle it is to turn the tables and approach the person waiting and say "I forgot my MB in my room...could you open the gate for me?". You should be able to read their expression and see if they belong.

Bottom line is that I won't let anyone in without their band. But I'm also not going to shut the door on anyone...so I create ways to avoid that situation.

Personally, I don't think anyone should be pool monitors during their vacation. Voluntarily or otherwise. I certainly don't want to and should not question other people around the pool about their status or assume they don't belong. It is none of my business.

Rules which are not enforced aren't really rules in my opinion. If Disney truly cared about unauthorized people lounging/swimming in the Poly pool, they would take steps to fix the issue, once and for all.

If this is something that keeps you up at night, the best course of action is to take it up with Disney. I think that is where the issue lies. Not with the "pool hoppers" themselves. If they don't take it seriously, then why should you?

My points exactly. I have better things to do than police other guests. But don't leech off of my ability to use the facilities at the resort I'M paying for.

We stayed at YC on our last trip, and they checked MB everyday, I actually think its a idea. The Poly should have the same system. I am sorry but if I am paying to stay at a resort than that is the pool I am going to swim at, drink at and hang out at. I like the idea of checking out other resorts to see if you like the "feel" of the resort but that does not give you the right to use the pool. I have seen so many post that people do not like the fences like I have said B4 the fences are only a problem for the people who they are trying to keep out. If you belong inside them, then you wouldn't have an issue with them. Seriously I like the phrase "play were you pay" from another poster!

I expect they watch people scan magic bands at the pool gate to verify if one is a resort guest.

Well I am going to say this and this is the last thing I will say. If the pool seems overly crowded (meaning I can't find a seat) then I would be curious if everyone there is a paying guest. If not, I'm not inclined to give any energy to this matter. My time, my relaxation and my excitement will not be ruined by worry over who should or should not be at my pool. Just saying....is it worth getting aggravated over....especially when you are on vacation? If you want to spend time observing all the things that "should not be allowed" or that "aren't right"....life will be awfully challenging...no matter where you are. Keep smiling!

My recollection is that lifeguards at the pool entrance scan your magic band to confirm you are a resort guest

I would note that even with the restrictions at SAB it can sometimes be difficult to find a seat, and we go in the offseason when less crowded
