I must say, this has to be the longest an Oscars thread has ever stayed active after the show ended LOL.
From the TMZ article:
"We're told Will was aware there was talk about asking him to leave the theater. During one of the commercial breaks, we're told Oscars producer Will Packer walked up to Will and said, "We do not want you to leave" ... this according to our sources.
Will Packer walked up to Will Smith just after 8 PM, around 35 minutes after the slap. That's when he told Will he could stay, according to our sources. Will won the Best Actor Award around 5 minutes later."
We may never know who is lying in all this mess. The conflicting accounts continue. . .
ABC will have an exclusive interview with producer Will Packer tomorrow. They showed a small teaser and said very clearly, "Will Packer says he did not have any direct contact with Will Smith that evening."
We may never know who is lying in all this mess.
As much as people are saying "Good for Chris Rock, his shows are sold out now." He also has had to pay for beefed up security to make sure no one copycat comes up to slap him. So, monetarily, it's probably a wash. He's from Brooklyn. He was able to walk the streets of Brooklyn but can't wander around Boston or wherever anymore without security.![]()
Just as Jazzy Jeff was about to comment:DJ Jazzy Jeff knows the truth
There has been so much controversy and negativity surrounding the show. I'm not sure how the Oscars survive. They are already a shadow of what they once were.i'm wondering what impact this event will have on productions of all types and their insurance premiums. there was already talk of what the financial impact resulting from the death on the set of 'rust' would have on the industry but with this happening? not only could will smith become prohibitively expensive for a production to insure (if not outright uninsurable) it could cause a ripple effect and impact what were previously considered 'low risk' productions as well as what individual performers have to pay for self insurance. i hope this doesn't create a larger financial barrier for the smaller/no so deep pocketed indie film productions to face.

How much of an impact “the slap” will have depends on how it’s handled. So far…very poorly. They also need the films to rise to the occasion. Yes we’ve had “unprecedented” events but they were sliding prior to the pandemic. Many no longer care to tune in. Sad time for arts and entertainmentIt's an award ceremony that is also broadcast on TV. Even if it's not broadcast live, I highly doubt it ends (it existed before the TV broadcast). But despite what happened, people are going to tune in next year just to see what happens.

Both the Academy and Will Smith look bad. No need to choose. It’s not about “asking” someone to leave. If they didn't ask him to leave, the Academy looks bad. If they asked him to leave and he refused, Will looks bad.
We are in PR spin territory now.
I love the detective work on this thread! What else can we uncover!
So TMZ says Packer is lying. Chris Rock says Packer is lying. Why would would Will Packer lie? One simple search on IMDB shows that Will Packer produced the horribly unfunny movie Girls Trip starring... wait for it... Jada Pinkett Smith. He's probably buds with the Smiths and his interviews are full of holes because of it.Shame on him for making the situation worse by lying. Here is the exclusive interview of the Oscars executive producer, Will Packer, by GMA host TJ Holmes this morning.
It's in 2 segments. This first one is Will Packer explaining the behind the scenes moments with Chris Rock. How the LAPD went up to Chris and wanted to speak to him. They were ready to arrest Smith if Chris wanted that. (Whoopi Goldberg, a previous Oscar host, the other day said the LAPD are always already there on site for these shows.)
Note how Packer said he did not speak directly to Will Smith that night. Yet TMZ said they have 3 separate sources who were sitting nearby, (and corroborate each other) by saying they saw Packer go up to Smith and tell him he could stay.
If you'd prefer to read it, or to copy & paste quotes, that segment is also here: https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Culture/oscars-producer-packer-opens-happened
This second clip is from Will Packer's perspective of why he thinks the audience stood up when Will won his award, and how he was hoping Will Smith could make things better by apologizing to Chris during his acceptance speech.
Packer is making things worse by lying.Chris Rock says he never spoke to Packer ...whether or not Smith should stay or go. The Academy can't keep their stories straight. Not a good look at all.
