The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

The Smiths opened up a Scientology school under the guise of it being a Leadership School. When the truth came out about it, they closed it down. There is so much more to their story. I've always found them odd.

Holy cow! I’m so not in-the-know. This is news to me. How long ago was this?

Will put the Academy in an unbearable position. They cannot promise safety to people on stage any longer. They did not address that assault immediately. If it had been a stranger doing it they'd be in jail right now. The fact that it was an "elite" member of their personal society should not have factored. Safety first, the show must go on AFTER that is insured.

What happens at the next event where somebody goes on stage to smack somebody they don't like? How could you press charges against the next person if you didn't against the first person? It's going to be very interesting to see how this entire scenario plays out.

I've been thinking the same thing. WHY would anyone feel safe after this to be a presenter? They can't make ANY kind of jokes anymore as even the simplest, and thought to be harmless, could set another person off, who thinks s/he has a right to smack the presenter and will just get a short suspension from the Academy, or whatever.

Some of these stars don't even make movies every year. If they aren't expelled, how many years suspension would be considered acceptable? Three years? Five years? So, Will just lays low, claims to get therapy (which Scientologists don't do,) and then is sitting there again in 5 years. Who is going to feel safe???

Poor Lupita Nyong'o! She sat right behind that violent verbal outburst and was in all the videos too. Even the one shown from behind now. She has social media memes about her. She's probably in therapy today overcoming having been in the middle of the Pinkett Smiths.

What about Denzel? Was he just tending to the Pinkett Smiths? Or was he also trying to act as self-appointed security? Keeping others away, lest they trigger Will again and he slaps another person? He could be seen holding a hand up, motioning Chris to stay back, or to keep things calm.

As much as people are saying "Good for Chris Rock, his shows are sold out now." He also has had to pay for beefed up security to make sure no one copycat comes up to slap him. So, monetarily, it's probably a wash. He's from Brooklyn. He was able to walk the streets of Brooklyn but can't wander around Boston or wherever anymore without security. :sad2:

Chris was bullied and victimized a lot during his childhood. Unfortunately, many victims feel responsible that it affects others.

I also have to wonder if, during the 30 years that Chris & Will have known each other and worked together in the past, if they both have mentioned to each other the violence they suffered in their childhood? I've never seen Everybody Hates Chris which is supposed to be partially about Chris' childhood experiences. I have to wonder if Will knew Chris wouldn't fight back but take the slap? And he could turn and walk back to his seat with that proud smirk he had on his face after.

Not only that, Chris would continue with the show.

Chris hasn't filed charges.

Chris still hasn't spoken about the incident or made jokes about it.

I think Chris was expressing empathy to the hosts for having the situation upstage the entire show. It's like saying "I'm so sorry" when something bad happens to your friend or they lost a loved one. It's just basic empathy.

Also, the "file charges" isn't really a thing. Filing a complaint is a thing and it's normally the first step in investigating a potential crime. Since most crimes don't happen on national television, getting a victim to make a formal complaint and make a statement is step 1. The police can't do anything without a complaint or evidence. In this case, Chris Rock's cooperation is not needed since it's literally on video from multiple angles and witnessed by millions (or thousands first hand in the theater).

Jada is into polyamory and was raised in that type of environment. She openly has other men in her life. This came to light when one of the boyfriends talked to the media about it. Will and Jada had to address it. Her daughter has now come out as polyamorous also, based on her upbringing in that household. Will apparently acts likes he is cool with it, but it might be tearing away at him at this point. Their son has mental health issues and eating disorders that they talk about as well. No doubt from of the tumultuous family life he has experienced.

Maybe I'm a big ol' dummy but is Willow married or living with someone as a partner? If she is not, then isn't that just "dating" or "sleeping around"?

Except there are pics of her partying with the Smiths at the afterparty looking very chummy.

I meant police report. But, Will may not know Chris doesn't have to file one in order for actions to be taken.

If Will had slapped, say, Tom Hanks instead, first, Will would never have made it back to his seat. We'd see security from backstage dragging his butt back, off the side of the stage.

If they didn't, I think Tom would have kept the show stopped and demanded security come and take him away before continuing. THEN once the danger was out of the room, he would have shaken it off and continued.

(Please don't somebody tell me, he tweeted a thumbs up to Will. :headache: )

Maybe she has Stockholm syndrome, from being held captive between them? (Come on, Lupita, I'm trying to give you an out here! )

Am I the only one thinking that in a day or three we might be seeing headlines that Chris Rock, after doing the slow burn for a few days seeing all these videos and commentaries, as well as being advised from the people around him, decides to not only press charges against Will Smith, but file some lawsuits against him personally and maybe the Academy and/or producers of the show, etc.?

You’re right, they don’t. But from previous post it looked like they only “dabbled” and weren’t full fledged. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I never heard of them being members of Scientology before that post (but I’m not the best on celebrity gossip either), so I was hoping it was just a brief dabble with no repercussions and not a Leah Remini type of situation.
I’ve read that Jada was deep in it and Will dabbled. I don’t know that it’s possible to just dabble in Scientology though. That’s not how they operate.

Seems some sources are saying that WS was not asked to leave despite The Academy's statement.

I know it's TMZ, but they aren't the only one reporting that, and they have gotten things right in the past that were seemingly unbelievable.
It seems like there was a lot of discussion, and there were reports of the same, between Will’s publicist and high ranking members of the Academy, with the publicist going back and forth between them, who were in a room backstage, and Will, who remained in his chair. Maybe that’s what their conversations were about, but who knows.

I believe TMZ. :(

From the article:
"We're told Will was aware there was talk about asking him to leave the theater. During one of the commercial breaks, we're told Oscars producer Will Packer walked up to Will and said, "We do not want you to leave" ... this according to our sources.
Will Packer walked up to Will Smith just after 8 PM, around 35 minutes after the slap. That's when he told Will he could stay, according to our sources. Will won the Best Actor Award around 5 minutes later."

Will Packer is a friend of the Pinkett Smiths. He worked with Jada on some projects. I also stand by my theory that he KNEW Will was going to win Best Actor beforehand. He wanted his friend to get his chance in the sun. :mic:

:sad2: Will Packer wimped out from doing his duty to the other attendees. He wasn't impartial. He let Will stay, IMO.

Well, this can mean that the production team wanted him to stay. "The Academy" could have wanted him to leave. Who knows who makes the final call in the moment? The academy could have absolutely said they wanted him out. The LAPD said THEY were not asked to remove him. So, this is just another spin on the same story.

The most interesting complaint is that ABC didnt announce that there was going to be violence and profanities... :p duh! It was a not planned incident.

The articles on NY post say there was a 20 second delay.
Also apparently Americans could know what was being said without waiting for the international channels leaking it, as the closed captioning wasn't adjusted ;).
