Couple random clarifying points (sorry, too lazy to multi quote here)
1. The Oscar's are on a 2-3 second delay, max. The slap was a surprise to everyone. And it happened FAST. There was not enough time to react and prevent everyone from seeing it. The subsequent yelling was only cut out of the audio feed in America because the overseas networks get a "raw feed" but the US broadcast is subject to FCC compliance on censorship, so immediately after the slap, in anticipation of a verbal exchange, someone in the control room hit the button to cut the audio feed for the US broadcast, because they didn't know what Will would say. It was a preemptive move. The raw feed continued. Just a bit of "behind the scenes" perspective, and why we saw the slap but did not hear the cursing.
2. NO ONE at the Oscars knows the winners in advance. Not even the producers. Those sealed envelopes are handed over by an accounting firm just before the ceremony and the only people privy to the contents are the employees at that firm who tally the votes and create the envelopes. They are sworn to secrecy. Will was the "odds on favorite" to win best actor, but they didn't simply allow him to stay "so he could receive his award." They did not know he would win until the envelope was opened.
3. There has been speculation for years that Jada is Will's beard. It's one of those poorly kept Hollywood secrets. Whether anyone truly cares about that or not is irrelevant. But it's been out there for awhile. Perhaps this could explain Will's attachment to Jada and the insistence on remaining married to her. Who knows. But I do know that people who try to live a lie eventually crack.
4. Chris Rock is a class act for sure. He could be exploiting this situation if he were a lesser man. That he isn't, and that he is taking his time to process what happened before responding is admirable. That he apologized to Wanda Sykes for what happened speaks volumes as well.
5. I'm glad the Academy is admitting that they should have handled things differently, even if that's just a CYA move. I have heard that the actors unions are going after the Academy HARD for allowing "violence in the workplace" to go unchecked. Those unions are quite influential and I don't expect Will to get off easily. There is pressure to make an example out of him.
