The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

Snipping pertinent points, it says:
"The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards. [. . .]

"The organization didn’t have too many other options to impose, especially with Smith’s membership now no longer active following his resignation. His resignation and barring from future telecasts do not preclude him from being nominated or even winning future Academy Awards during that time. "

So, he can still win. Just not do another slap. . . then acceptance speech. He can probably say something on Instagram Live after the announcement and wait for an assistant to pick up and hand him his award after the show. Then go party hopping again.

He can still be nominated ugh, hopefully the members will al remember this, next times he gives a good performance, and just ignore the performance.

That video is so strange. First, why would Will act like such a *** on video? Second, why would Jada release that??? It is so embarrassing. We all act like jerks sometimes, but I don't think any of us would want to be taped acting like that let alone have it released.
I don’t like who he’s become, but he wasn’t being an (editing to remove word - wasn’t thinking) in that video. He was establishing boundaries that she was ignoring. And she was doing it live.

Deadline.com posted Will's statement to the decision:

“I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” Smith said in a succinct statement soon after AMPAS made their POV public.

Even if he has a film out in the coming years, which I doubt, he has to give such a stellar performance to make the shortlist. He can't just do a good job, he has to give an out-of-this-world performance. He is not a Leonardo DiCaprio or Meryl Streep who get nominated almost regardless of the part.

He's been nominated 3 times. He won this last one. His other nominations were for Ali and Pursuit of Happyness. He also won the BAFTA for King Richard. So, it's not out of the realm of him possibly being nominated again.

And according to Jada, he should have been nominated and won for his last several movies. ;)

Even before this round of Oscars, Will Smith wasn't in such high demand anymore as he was. He had a lot of flops / underperforming movies in the last 5-10 years. He's 53, roles for his age group are getting more scarce. Producers will be careful getting him on board. Even if he is on board, does a producer want to spend millions on a 'for your consideration' campaign for Will Smith? He has to play his part so well to overcome all that.

In theory it's possible, but I think in practise, I would be really surprised if he will ever make the shortlist again. At least not in the next 10 years.

I can see that point of view, but I looked at it a little differently. Most are saying what you said, so I am obviously in the minority.

This is my take:

It wasn't like it was some acquaintance trying to use him for his fame. Like if you were famous and someone you barely know calls and asks you to promote them. That would be irritating and make you feel used. This was his wife. I would think he would want to do everything in his power, including using his fame, to promote her show and support her endeavors. I would think he would have taken that opportunity to shout from the rooftops how proud he is of her and how people should watch her show and how wonderful the guest is and how much they helped them etc.

Interesting. I saw it differently. Will was in the privacy of his own home, which should be a private & safe space Especially for someone who has such a public personae. He walks in and finds them filming live and they want to rope him into their broadcast, to score more followers or watchers. To be able to tag him in the video. He set his foot down and made his boundaries known. He doesn't want to be used by them.

I think it also shows one of the cracks in their marriage. That as lovey-dovey as they want to appear, on a deeper level he knows she would use him & his fame any chance she got. Did you see her face when she turned the camera onto herself? I bet she's been waiting for the chance to embarrass and humiliate him for not letting her use him for her gain. She finally got her chance when she told him on her Red Table Talk about her "entanglement" with her young boyfriend when they were supposedly separated.

The one thing good about knowing they were separated, if that was real, is that they did separate. So, maybe, if Will gets real therapy, he will realize Jada just isn't good for him, isn't there for him. She's there for herself. And they will separate again and finally divorce.
I don’t follow a lot of celebrity gossip so something usually has to be really big to filter its way into my bubble. I knew about her “entanglement.” Are you saying Will found out while being filmed for her show? I always assumed he knew and agreed later to sit for her show to discuss it. But if that’s when she sprung it on him…. {insert fainting emoji}

So, he can still be nominated and win an Academy Award. He just doesn't have to get dressed up and go to the event. Gee, that's really a harsh punishment. He'll need continual counseling to get over this........

But don't you think that's highly unlikely? I suspect that there's a tacit agreement among Academy voters that ain't gonna happen.

I hope so.

He's had a team scouring scripts for the right parts for him. There are fewer for black men. Yet, that's how he got Ali and King Richard. Men actually get the awards as they get older. "Aging like fine wine" and all that. Brad Pitt won his Oscar 2(?) years ago at age 56.

So he'll be using Zoom like the rest of the world.

I get your take and you have a right to it. :)

However, she didn't ASK him first if he would be in it.

Can you imagine Rita Wilson doing that to Tom Hanks? Yes, he probably does everything to support her. When they were one of the first famous people to get Covid, they were in Australia promoting her concerts.

However, it has always been widely known that she just isn't as good of an actress as Tom is. Everyone knows she's his wife. Yet, I've never seen her use or abuse that title and relationship for her own gain. And I think she would ask him first if it was okay to use his celebrity and status for something. That's my take.

From what I read, the boyfriend was the one who leaked that he had seen her 4 years earlier. He was 25 and was a friend of their son. He said that he had Will's permission. But, he hadn't. Will supposedly didn't know. IF Will & Jada were secretly separated, he didn't need to know.

It was on Jada's Red Table Talk that she admitted to Will, on camera, she had an "entanglement" as she referred to it when they were separated and she thought the marriage was over. That the end of their marriage left her broken. So he was hearing the confirmation and the details for the first time. (However, I didn't watch the Red Table Talk, so I don't know if that is fully accurate. I have no interest in watching her.)

I'm still hoping the DA charges him with battery. My understanding is that they don't need Rock's cooperation to charge him.
