The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I am so nervous about being swept and I am currently in the last corral. I did a 10k yesterday just so I could have a timed race to submit at the Expo. I am slow, but steady, and did finish with a 14.13 mile average. Do you think that would move me up even one corral?

I am not super worried about getting swept, we are in Corral J and are hoping to get up to the beginning of it, so we have a bit of a lead. We have been keeping about a 14.15 pace and I know that adrenaline and whatnot may speed that up plus we should have atleast a 12 min lead on the sweepers. My question is, are the balloon ladies at all races? Like will we at least have visual on where the sweeper is located to ensure we are ahead?

Hi everyone! I've been reading this forum for some time now and decided it was time to post! I've really enjoyed all of the information and encouragement that everyone has provided.

I'm doing the W&D next week for the 2nd time. Last year was my first ever half and I finished in 3:16:50. Not a great time, but I was happy that I finished and wasn't even close to being swept. I'm running alone and am in corral J if anyone is looking for someone.

This year my training hasn't been going all that well. I was out of commission for a few weeks with a knee issue and I've been having some shin issues lately. I didn't do my long run this weekend, but did do a 5k averaging about a 14mm. I felt ok but didn't really feel good enough metally to do the long run. Now I'm kicking myself for not doing more.

I'm thinking I should try to do a long run tonight after work, but I'm not sure. I know I can go the distance, when I did 12.5 I felt good; slow, but good.

Anyway, I'm just starting to freak out a bit about not being able to finish, not getting a good time, etc. I'm trying to combat all the negative thoughts, but its tough sometimes.

Good luck to everyone!

:welcome: and happy to see you! :goodvibes Trust me, I think we're just about ALL getting those last minute jitters, so you're not alone. Like Figment said, you've got the distance down, and you're there to :woohoo:. You'll be so caught up in the energy and excitement of the other runners, you won't even realize how fast those first couple of miles go by! However, PAY ATTENTION! ::yes:: You don't want to crank out a crazy first mile time and have nothing left for later on in the race. I would suggest wearing a pace band, (you can find them all over the internet, just google them), and stick to your plan as much as you can. Now you make have to make allowances, but the main thing is to HAVE FUN!!! Unless you're Anton, who wins it every year and I'm convinced actually does have wings on his feet, you're not out there to set any speed records. First, last, or in the middle, we all get the bling...AND BLING IS GOOD!!! :thumbsup2 ::yes::

Possibly. It depends on your actual finish time and the people at the expo. a 14.13 mile average works out to 1:27:36 finish, which according to McMillan projects a 3:15:17 half finish. The 2nd to last corral at Wine & Dine is for <3:15. You're right on the border. If you want to try, print out your results and ask at the expo. Worst they would do is say no.

Peachygreen - i would go with the half time for proof. Both work are between 2:45 & 2:29, so either would probably put you in G but the half is more definitive.

(This is ALL going on the assumption that Disney uses something like McMillan's calculator). I'm going to flat out ask them for Corral F, as my 10k proof of time projects a 2:30:33 finish which is a WHOLE lot closer to 2:29 than it is to 2:45. Crossing fingers.... Honestly though, I wouldn't worry too much - I was in the 2nd to last corral last year and it was ok. Just keep moving and don't wait in any long picture lines.

Hi everyone!

My DH and I completed our last long run.:banana: it was 9.5mi (not nearly the 14) but DH wasn't in too much pain (he hadn't done a long run in over a month due to knee injury) and I didn't have to motivation to keep running without him. I am feeling pretty confident about this first half marathon, I just need to work to cooperate for me to get in my maintenance run from now until Disney - We leave in 9 days!!!!!:hourglass

Did I miss the decision about a meet up (I have been trying to follow the board somewhat faithfully)?

Yes! We're going to meet for a photo op at 8pm in front of the WWoS globe. You'll go right by it when you go to pick up your bib at the HP Field House and Jostens Center. It's also been posted on the W.I.S.H. Facebook page as well. :thumbsup2

Geez one more thing: My right shin gets KT tape for previously mentioned shin pain during the run. Considering applying some on the right knee as well, which has shown some pain last two runs. I assume its ok to KT tape more than one area per leg. Thoughts?

I KT taped both of my shins (as i have on all long runs) but this weekend I added my right knee. My chiro recommended i try it as I was having knee pain past mile 9. he said that the stretches and strength training are what can really help, but he saw no reason to not try the tape and see.

I would say that the knee taping wasn't as helpful as my shins, but maybe that is because my knew has never been as painful as my shins.

silly followup - 8pm Friday or 8pm Saturday?

I was looking over the official race program just now and it says shuttles to the half marathon race start (at WWoS) are only provided from host resorts. Don't they run shuttles from Epcot too? Or will I have to bus from Epcot to my resort then catch a different bus to WWoS?

My last long run was on Sunday. I only ran 8 miles. I've gone the full 13 and had several runs logged in the double-digits. After a sore calf last week, I opted to go a little easy. It was a good/chilly run with all splits being at goal pace or even a little bit under. I feel prepared for the race.

I ran 3 miles today at uncharacteristically fast pace for me. (Avg pace was 7:37), I didn't have wheaties for breakfast...:joker: Wish all my runs felt like that. Then again, only 3 miles. There is a mighty big difference between 3 and 13.1!

I'm down to 5 planned training runs between now and when I leave for Orlando. UNREAL. I can count them on one hand.

In talks with SIL/BIL, just realized that we're not going to the after-party at all. Kinda seems a waste of a wristband (or, rather 3 wristbands). But, SIL is still nursing her little one/needs to get back within a reasonable timeframe and I totally get it. I'm thankful that they're carting my butt to/from the race. I'll take one for the team. I kinda feel like maybe I'll miss out on something by not being there.

I have to note this on my cheat sheet! And Friday afternoon at the Boardwalk somewhere?

Interesting, I never read it this way but I can see how one could. The Epcot ride to WWoS is under the 'Driving to the Race" section.

DTD will host a sidewalk art festival over the W&D weekend. While not as exciting as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, these artists do amazing things with chalk.

Time to vent! I haven't run in 2 days (since doing my 12+) because of the pain in my foot. It feels fine to walk normally on it and even moving it around, but running on it makes the bones hurt (especially on the outer side). Its really weird.

Then to boot my Ipod seems to have a mind of its own and it stops playing at certain songs, and then some songs are disappearing form my running playlist...after I added them all in and arranged them in the order I want. Grrr, just a frustrating day. :sad2:

Lets do this thing!

My vote: Boston Strong chica! :thumbsup2

Here's a link to the shirt I had made for this back when I registered...

I also found a wine bottle/grapes patch that I'm going to sew on the lower leg of my compression pants and I'm going to try and find some wine material for a simple ponytail ribbon. I'm also debating between wearing the Wine and Dine headband from last year or another one that says "If found on road please drag across the finish line." :rotfl: I went all out "patriotic princess" last year which was fun, but I threw off the tiara at the first mile as it kept sliding off my headphones. It was fun getting all blinged out, but the skirt kind of made me crazy after a while. Why the heck did I decide to go Sleeping Beauty for the January Half??? :confused3 :goodvibes

Remember...you're running a race in DISNEY! :cool1:  :woohoo:

CamColt- :love::love::love: the shirts!!! :yay:

Coach:If we want to do a pre race day meetup somewhere, do you know if we need to let the place know ahead of time if we do it at a restaurant or someplace like that? Or, for someplace like the patio under the back stairs at the Boardwalk?

For sure, we'll have a photo op just before the start. :thumbsup2 I know Team #runDisney is getting together for pics at the back of the info booth on the runner's side of the field. This is also where the DIS'ers met last year. We can always meet back there again if you guys want. Who would be interested in also meeting up maybe mid-late Friday afternoon?:thumbsup2

Friday may be tough for me-I plan on leaving the hotel @ 6 m Saturday-not too familiar w/ WWS. Please let me know as much detail as possible!

The globe is fairly simple to find. First, as you go to the expo look for the globe

http://www.wdwfacts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ESPN-WIDE-WORLD-OF-SPORTS.jpg

as you walk up to the complex. You will see the globe no matter how you arrive for the expo. On race night, you will depart buses in the WWoS parking lot and be directed to a sidewalk. Once at the sidewalk, the race will be towards your right. The WWoS complex to your left. Head left and the globe will be in your way.

Vent away...

I would not feel compelled to run this week and only a very short one over the weekend. Add ice as well.

Can't help the iPod thing. I tend to toss them with regularity. When teaching cycle class, one mess up on the iPod's part is almost enough to toss it, after two, it is gone.

Hey there, speedy! Nice job!

Like you, I feel like I'm missing out on not going to the afterparty, but DH and I have an 8:12 am tee time the next morning. I keep hoping someone will tell me the party is no fun and a total waste of money so I can stop feeling bad. Anyone? Anyone? :rolleyes1 By the time I thought, "yeah, let's go for a little bit" the tickets were all sold out.

My only concern about the after party is that I'll be cold. We're leaning toward checking a bag do hopefully I'll have space to stash something.

We plan to check a bag with sweaters, dry shirt, etc. So we can enjoy the slow walk back to the Boardwalk for an hour or two.... It may take me awhile of stopping and resting (with a drink in my hand) to get there. :-)
