The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I was using the app Map My Run (free version) and of course it wanted to suggest "friends" that I might want to add to my update list. Apparently it just pulled names from Facebook that also have the app, including some vague acquaintances from running group. I did not know this.

Imagine my iPhone beeping out an alert at 5:30 am and waking myself and DH. He picks it up and I have to groggily explain who "Justin" is and why he's sending me a notification that he just started a "new workout".

Yeah... I quickly disabled everybody except for my sis-in-law!!!

Thanks :) Truth be told, it was more to stick it to my husband. He had a tough time pushing them during our run a couple weekends ago and I wanted to prove to him that it wasn't that hard.

Awesome! Currently, I'd like to prove to mine that he needs some sort of even loose plan to train for Wine & Dine. His current "schedule" is going out and running a few miles when he feels like it, maybe once or twice a week. Of course, he's going to do it his way and do really well and then I'm going to be so annoyed. Not that I want him to be uncomfortable at the after-party, but I'd love to hear a "You were right, Wonderful Wife, it would have been beneficial to train in some capacity for this run." Instead he's going to be bouncing around and on his second beer by the time I stumble across the finish line :)

The app I use on my phone it the HITT Interval Training. It was a free download on my phone. :thumbsup2 Love it! Can't run without it. It has a countdown in the few seconds before a change and I can either have a whistle or something else (forgot since I only use the whistle). No British women though :rotfl2:

I had to laugh at your comment also about ice cream. I wanted to go so bad for ice cream on Sunday night. DQ has a smores blizzard that is amazing. Didn't get to go on Saturday because my son did not finish his dinner. :rolleyes1 So figured we would go on Sunday, but forgot about my run. At least I was happy I got it in and lost calories instead of adding them :lmao:

Fruitcakes24 - that is funny about pushing the stroller and your husband. You go girl!:woohoo:

I kind of miss the British woman some days. There was only an app to get to a 5k, no further apps in the series.

Now, I'm sitting here dreaming about ice cream. I wish I had some of my favorite, Bittersweet Chocolate in the freezer right now :(

I did the 5k with the British lady- loved her!!! And my DH will likely beat me to the finish line even though he hasn't really started training yet either!!! Lol

My Tuesday 45 was done today. I think it might be good I am doing 45 minutes on Tuesday and Thursday because my stamina gives out at 38 minutes every time I run. So pushing to 45 (plus my long runs) should help get past that!

I need some advice from fellow DISers who travel to WDW....
Scenario: We (DBF & !) are flying down on a Friday morning and home on Sunday afternoon for the Wine & Dine ½ Marathon and Mickey's Jingle Jungle 5K. We are not planning any other park time than what is included with our race entries (the after party). We are renting a car to eat off site and to shop at the outlets.
Question:
Should we pay the premium and stay on-site, because its a Disney trip and it should be Disney across the board?
Should we save a little money and stay off-site, since we won't be using Magical Express, Extra Magic Hours, have no need for a dining plan, etc.?
Rent DVC points?
Other opinions?

Hi Todd-

Since you're really only planning on being onsite for the running events (the expo, the 5K, the W&D Half, and the After Party), I'd be reluctant to spend the money to stay onsite. Renting DVC will be tough this close to the dates and with F&W Festival still ongoing. You'll need to go to the expo on Friday because you're running the 5K. If you plan to eat offsite and shop offsite, it seems a bit silly to stay onsite and continuously drive offsite. If you have a rent car, there's no need to stay at one of the Host hotels, so you're options are very open. Admittedly, I've never stayed offsite, but this just doesn't seem like the trip to do it for you, either. I know you take a lot of trips to Disney and compete in many of the runDisney events (yes, I lurk this board a lot), so it might be best to save up for your next trip down.

Then again...are you looking for someone to talk you into staying onsite?!?;)

I am apparently incapable of doing a 3 mile run. Everytime I set out for a 3 mile run I end up deciding to add to it and end up running at least 4 miles.

I never feel like I've gotten enough of a run in at 3 miles. Yep I'm crazy.

I did 4 miles this morning. Tomorrow, I need to do 3 or 3.5, depending upon how I feel, and a 5-mile run on Saturday to finish up week 2 of training. Feeling pretty good.

Someone else who used the British lady! That was a really good app, actually. I haven't checked in a while, but I was disappointed that they didn't consider a 10k, as well.

Turns out DH is following a training plan. He told me he did a mission in his Zombies, Run! app. :rolleyes2

We're all crazy! This is funny because yesterday and today I went farther than scheduled. I had 3x3-mile maintenance runs on the schedule but I did 3.5 yesterday and 4 today. (And I did my 4-miler a minute faster than I did it on Saturday, which felt good.) I plan to stick to a 3 mile run tomorrow...unless, in my OCD mind, I decide that I need to do 3.5 so that I end up with an even amount of mileage for the week :rolleyes2

I do like the 3 mile distance because I'd love to get faster at the 5k. After a couple of months focussing on speed, I finally have my 5k time under 30 minutes. Eventually, I'd love to be able to run 9-minute miles or just under that pace at that distance. Not a terribly ambitious goal by most standards but, as someone who came back to running at more than 12-minute miles a year ago, I'm pretty happy with my progress.

YES!!! Same here. I know he still has plenty of time, but I know he's not in the shape he was previously. He's taking the FL bar exam (today actually!) so I'm hoping once that's over he'll get serious about training, but I don't think it's going to happen.

:rolleyes2

Sending Pixie dust for the bar exam! :wizard:

Hi friends! Got 3 miles in on Monday and 2.5 in today, and my pace is on track where I want it for the time being so yay!

When I run from home (a large apt complex that's boring boring boring to look at) I usually run past the nearby extended stay place, which I lovingly refer to as the "My wife kicked me out motel". This provides the necessary never ending source of people watching and amusement during my runs, and breaks up the monotony of life in cookie-cutter apartment land LOL. Today, one of the interesting people I saw had a gun. Now, it could have been fake, IDK, I'm definitely not Anita Blake vampire hunter or anything LOL. I looked at him, looked back, and kept running. They were horsing around and the other people hanging around outside seemed disinterested, but still. The guy on the radio on my nike ipod was singing "catch me if you can" and it seemed appropriate. Needless to say it will be a while before I run at home again! Really glad Louisville has an excellent park system.

Anyway, that's my crazy running story for the week... hope everyone else has quiet but excellent workouts this week!

Hi everyone!

I have been silent on the board for awhile as the studio as been really busy recently, and we are moving into an office with a large sound stage and a screening room and so I haven't had the time to post anything. I have (mostly) been keeping up with everyone's posts though and its great to read about everyone's training.

I got a little more serious a few days ago and starting doing my gym/run combo. Monday was about 3 miles treadmill/elliptical, yesterday was 6.5 miles run, and today is back to the gym for weights and elliptical.

As far as I see it, we're talking basically THREE MONTHS from now!! :)

Hugs to everyone!

- Carey

Toe nail problems. Ouch. My 2nd toe on both feet, but especially my left foot hurts so much. It's not black (yet) but I am pretty sure it is starting to bruise under the nail polish. It seems too early for toe nail problems. I never had this with my previous marathon training, but I am more diligent in getting in all my weekly mileage this time.
Any suggestions? Do I need new shoes? Different socks? Am I doomed to losing my toe nail?

Not once but TWICE on early morning runs, I have seen people in my neighborhood getting arrested.

I guess my local PD serves warrants between 5-7 AM on Sundays.

And I thought it was spooky getting shone upon with the police search light on a run....

Rainy day here today, boooooo. Need to get 30 min in today but it may have to be on a treadmill. Not sure if I'm hard core enough yet to run in the rain.

Yes! I am! Although I used up my whole run-cation budget on disney races next year already so ill be looking local for a bit. I'd really like to do the shamrock race in va beach someday, rock n roll Vegas, one in DC, and a bunch others!

And congrats on your run! I actually like hitting that 8 mile distance. It was amazing to reach it last fall for the first time! Way to go!

I've been looking into the shamrock race, it looks fun! Budgeting for races and travel is A whole new problem for me! We taking a "normal" family vacation in May so have to factor that in too. With my DH doing races to it adds up fast!

Ack! I would have had a great time on that run with a nice long sprint past the firearms. Sheesh! Sounds like a neighborhood DH and I lived in when we were first married. Yikes! I'm glad you have some less exciting options available for your regular runs ;)

Oh the things you see when you run while most people are sleeping!

I don't do super rainy runs. I'd do 30 minutes in a drizzle, but not full on rain. Though, I despise the treadmill more and run extremely poorly on it so I'd probably just skip out on a short training run altogether. I'm obviously not even medium-core let alone hardcore about my running ;)

UGH!! I have the same problem! I have not figured out a solution other than to try and keep the nail trimmed as short as possible until it eventually falls off. I will probably end up seeing a podiatrist before the race to see what can be done. My right second toenail went through the "cycle" (intense pain, swelling...turned blue/black...eventually fell off...took about 6-7 weeks!) and now the second toe on my left foot is almost ready to fall off too. Once they fall off, the pain is totally gone. I haven't had too much of an issue with the new nail on my right toe, but I haven't really done any major distances yet.

just stumbled upon this thread :)

My wife, 4 friends and myself will be running in November too! Just finalized our resort reservations at POR and our flight down!

We are very excited!!!

3.5 miles this morning. I felt pretty good for my third running day in a row and would have pushed a little more distance if I didn't get such a late start. Best part of these morning runs, I've decided, is having my 2-year-old greet me with an enthusiastic hug when I come in the door afterwards. (That and the giant cup of ice water DH often has waiting on the counter for me.) Next up on the schedule is 5 miles on Saturday. Last week, this made me feel a little nervous but after three good runs, I'm feeling ready. I think others have said this before, I'm still learning to trust in my training plan.

That sounds so painful! I hope you guys can find some relief from that cycle with your nails.
