The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Nice to see everyone is in training mode.

Be sure to hydrate the heat is bad everywhere, going on 2 week of got weather and 5 day of 100+ heat index in PA.

My training took a hit, I tweaked my hammy and punctured my thigh all in the same day. The hammy occurred on an 8 mile run and the puncture happen while working in garden.

The puncture was about 1/2 inch deep in tear drop muscle above knee, hurt a lot and hays me pain, it has been almost 2 weeks an it is feeling better, but I missed 5 dad of workouts.

The hammy still hurts but I think it has more to do with needing a visit to my chiro, which is tomorrow morning.

As a result I upped my swimming workout to 2miles per workout, every T,Th and Sat.
I also have increased bike workouts, since no running, to 3 per week between 30 - 40 miles each outing.

Do not feel that I am losing anything as my base is pretty good, but hope to be running again Sunday.

Keep on training.

Holy heat and humidity batman! It was a hot run tonight!!!! I think I sweat out that last 50 pounds I needed to drop :) I waited until 8pm to run, the temp finally dropped to 94 degrees. All in all it was actual a decent run, my lungs much prefer the heat!
Good luck to everyone!!
Melinda

Finally headed home. I am very proud of myself for getting in all my training runs and walks this week at my conference. I'm only scheduled for 3miles Saturday. I really want to do more than that. It doesn't seem worth it to get up early for 3miles. I might add a mile or 2 after the group run

In other news, got our tix for MVMCP for Nov 8th in the mail yesterday. Anyone else going the night before the race?

I'll be there! We're hanging out with Winnie the Pooh and friends for dinner. I'm so excited to see snow on Main St!

Not sure yet if we will. I'm not sure what will be best for us on Saturday: an early Friday night or a late Friday night with lots of sleeping on Saturday during the day.

Right now we have a reservation at Le Cellier and we might just keep it an enjoy a little of the Food Festival. Notice I didn't say Wine. :scared: That will happen AFTER the race!

Just as the sun was setting, I went out for a run:banana:. It was still very humid and fairly warm but I managed to run 2.25 miles. I started with a 1/4 mile walk and then proceeded to run the next 2 miles without using my intervals. I felt pretty good and wanted to keep going, but for some reason, I was getting really uneasy:confused:. I don't know what it was...I've run in the dark before, but before sunrise, not after sunset. I'm not a timid person but I was just so focused on everything around me that I was having trouble just relaxing and "zoning out" into the run. I was running through my subdivision which is fairly quiet, but I just had that gut feeling:scared:. As a result, my adrenaline was pumping a little too much for my comfort. I ended up finishing at an 11:44 pace so I did very well. The only bad thing is that here I sit at 11:50pm...wide awake:scared1:. Ugh! I usually don't stay up too much past 10:30 but luckily, I don't have to get up early for anything tomorrow.

The whole "morning vs. evening" has me a little concerned. I worked my whole career (14 years) as a night-shifter. This January, I switched over to a day shift (7a-7p) which did not bother me at all. It has put me in a bit of a training quandry...run before work or after work???:confused3

Before work
...PROS...
...it's cooler...it's dark and peaceful...it energizes me...
...CONS..
...insufficient time to fuel/hydrate before running...time constraint (must be done in time to get to work) means can't just keep going...I would have to get up between 3-4am for the long runs:eek: since I have to be in the shower by 5:45am.

After work
...PROS...
...no time limit...it's cooler...plenty of time to hydrate/fuel throughout the day...don't have to get up before the crack of dawn...the race will be held at night so this would simulate the schedule
...CONS...
...I never know when I will actually get out of work (could be 7, could be 9:headache:)...much lower energy after a 12-hour workday...it energizes me making it difficult to go to bed soon after the run

I've kind of alternated between getting up at 4am and running 3-4 miles before work and waiting until the afternoon/evening and running 3-5 miles on my days off. For all you experienced runners, is it really important to keep on the same schedule or is it OK to mix it up? I have problems if I do an afternoon/evening run and then get up early the next morning for a pre-dawn run. Switching it up can prove to be problematic from a scheduling perspective. I don't want to injure myself, but I really need to improve my running duration. I have to be more consistent in running for 90+ minutes. So far, I've only done it once, mostly because of schedules and the weather.

I run after work during the week and in the morning on the weekends. I think since I've stuck to this schedule for so long, my body just got used to it and usually doesn't fight with me after a long day. As long as I don't sit down when I get home, I'm good, (once I get warmed up after the first mile.) :yay: Believe me, running at 10pm the night of the race really isn't that big a deal. There is SO much going on and so many people around, the adrenaline will keep you going all night,:hyper: as long as you take it easy during the day. If you normally wake up early, I'd at least try and take a :cloud9: that day if you can. You may not sleep, but at least you'll be off your legs and rested. :thumbsup2

Kristen- I am by no means an expert but I would agree, I run at various times of day depending on my schedule. I'm in retail and sometimes work day, sometimes night, never the same day to day and week to week. If I'm working an evening shift I run around lunchtime, and if I am working a day shift, I stop at the park on the way home and run after dinnertime. Long runs on my day off, which is today, so those mostly depend on the weather. Right now I'm anxious to get out there and get started, but with the heat I'm waiting until I see some clouds or til this evening.

Amazing!!! Good for you on getting passed that barrier. What an excellent feeling that must have given you. Hope it carries you through training this week.

So far, so good! Ran my 30 minutes on Tuesday and yesterday (at 9:30pm yesterday!). We'll see how it goes on Saturday.

You mean trying to do this is a pair of $40 hiking sneakers ain't such a good idea? Took your advise and bought a pair of Adidas adizero sonic 4's this afternoon. I hope to give them a full work-put tomorrow and see how much they help.

It's amazing the difference that the right pair of shoes can do for you. I got fitted at a local Fleet Feet and had really strong support in my first pair and have worked down to a lower level of stabilization in the shoe. Based on my experience, I definitely recommend a place that knows runners, can analyze your gait and movement and will suggest several brands to try on.

That's pretty much what I mean, yes. :teeth: how did the new shoes work out?

Hi everyone :) Just checking in. Got my long run in this afternoon and was blessed with cloudier skies and a bit of a breeze. 6 miles later, I feel great! Weird thing is... I tried to keep my pace slow.... and wound up with a pace two minutes/ mile faster than my 5 mile run! Good luck on your long runs this weekend guys! :cheer2:

I couldn't agree more!!! My PF flared up and even though I had gotten my shoes at an athletic store, they just weren't making me happy!! I went to the local running store, got fitted and I am a happy girl!! What a difference!!! I'm loving my new Brooks. I feel like a new runner!

Great job everyone on their runs! I'm sticking to the Galloway plan and I'm feeling good. The thought of running more than 6 miles ( the farthest I have ever 'run', is scarey, but exciting!! Luckily I have a few more weeks to prepare for that:).

Anyone that is running intervals, what are you run/walking? Last night I stuck to 2 min run/1 min walk and averaged a 1215 pace. Thinking of going up to 2:30/1 next week.. It took me a little bit of a mental battle to get past not running into my walk intervals, but I finally did it and it was great! Anyone else have a hard time making yourself walk? If I don't walk, the most I can run straight is 1.5 miles, but I'm dead at the end, so run walking makes sense for me on so many levels-- it was just a mental game! Silly, I know!!!

Run walk intervals are the only way my knees would hold up. I can do 3 miles straight, ironically I am faster with walk breaks.

My normal runs I do 3-1 or 4-1 intervals. My Saturday group runs have been 1-1 which I don't enjoy as much. I need to try to figure out when the "faster" group meets.

I think I am going to skip the group tomorrow. We are scheduled for 3 miles which I can easily get on my own and I will spend as much time traveling as running for 3 miles. I might try to do the magic mile test tomorrow. It's a mile run to the track from my house, so I could do a warm up, do 4 laps all out and 1-2 miles to finish it up.

New shoes helped a lot today. My knees were no where near as bad. Still need to build up ankle strength. My endurance sucks but that will come along. I tried C25K again and was Okay for a bit until endurance gave out. On the bright side I was maintaining a 13:30 mile pace. I think tomorrow I will skip the trainer and simply try to power walk 5K. I know I can cover the distance, its just a matter of picking up the pace. My goal is to A) lose 45 lbs by November 3rd and be able to sustain a 30 minute jog.
And my son reminded me that MJJ5K won't be my first run as I am signed up for a "Color Me RAD" 5K event in August up in Denver.

I have found that the 4/2 works the best for me when I plan on running more than 3 miles. When I go out with a time limit, I have a slightly hilly 2.25 mile route that I do without the intervals.

I tried the 3/2 and 4/1 and didn't like either. Three minutes is not quite enough to get me in a groove. By the time I am "in the zone", it's time to walk. OTOH, when I do a 4 minute run, 1 minute is not quite enough recovery time once I get to my 5th-6th repetition. Two minutes is perfect...the first minute lets me get my breathing under control, if needed, and then I use 30 seconds to hydrate and hit my inhaler. The last 30 seconds get me ready to run again. I usually maintain at least a 12:30 pace with the 4/2 intervals.

I might try a 5/2 the next time I go on a longer run. We have a nice cold front (and potentially severe storms) coming through tonight. DH doesn't go to work until 9:30 on Sunday so I should be able to get up at 5:30 and run for at least an hour before church. The weather (and my motivation) will be the key factors in determining whether or not that happens.

I definitely have some experimenting to do... I think I may go to 2:30/1 next run, then 3/1:30, 3/1, 4/2, 4/1:30, 4/1 and see where I'm at then...

Who knows though:) best laid plans...

I'd love to hear how your 5/2 works out! Enjoy!!!

3.75 miles this morning. Then a little walking. Then the last quarter of a mile :). I simply couldn't keep going the full 4 without a break, which made me a little mad with myself. I think I need to adjust that route because it ends on a half-mile uphill, which it tough for me mentally while I'm at this particular distance of training. Going to run again tomorrow and I'm still trying to decide between just doing my 3-mile run, as scheduled, or attempting the 4 again.

YES!! Successfully completed 5K this morning on the indoor suspended track at base. My time was 45:15 (don't laugh!) which I am please with (for now). Knees ache only a little, feet feel fine. Tomorrow will be cardio in the pool.
In order to do 5K on the track I have to do a little over 37 laps. Top keep track of the laps I downloaded an app called Tap-A-Lap. It works fine. I only wish it had buttons I could press when I start jogs/walks so I could know at the end what percentages of the time were spent in each mode. I know the walks are winning right now.

I tried the 5/2 tonight and I was not impressed with myself. I did a route that has two, steep uphill sections that are balanced by longer, gradual downhills. It's 84 degrees, sunny and 65% humidity. I walked the first 1/4 mile and then started the intervals. When I got home, I'd done 4.83 miles in 1:02:01 which is a 12:51 pace. Compare that to my run on May 2 where I used the 1/2 Marathon trainer. I did a 5 minute walk, 3/2 intervals x 10, and a 5 minute cool-down. I completed it in 1:00:00 and did 4.84 miles...a 12:24 pace. I have to believe that it is the weather or time of day or something because I find it hard to believe that I was 30 seconds/mile faster running 3/2 AND I had 5 minutes at the start and finish of walking:confused3.

I may have to try the 5/2 again on the same route but at a different time of day or maybe in better (cooler) weather. I think I will also run that route at 4/2 and see how I do. It is the same route I did when I ran the 8 miles last month, but I took the short way home this time. I had DD10 with me but she was on her bike since I told her I was going more than 5K.

On a different (but still race-related) note...I knocked $450 off of our travel budget:banana:. I had planned on buying DVC AP's for DH and I since we are planning on taking the kids next October. Since the kids want to do a Y.E.S. class, DH and I will still have to buy tickets which means that we can't use the AP's. Since we will only be in the parks for 4 days on this trip, I decided to buy 4-day PH's at the discounted race rate ($435 for the two of us!) which is less than the cost of one DVC AP:cool1:. I already have $450 worth of GC's that I bought from Target so I don't have to take it out of the vacation account.

I made the mistake of looking at pictures of the F&W kiosks from last year. OMG!! I can't wait!! My girls are huge fans of "Cake Boss" and now I am anxious to see if Buddy will be there the same time we are (doubt it:worried:) so we can at least make an attempt to see him. How can I find out who the celebrity chefs will be and when they will be appearing? I've checked out some of the official websites and there is not a specific schedule. Is it still too early?

No more rambling from me...I've got dinner to make:stir:.

Hmm, maybe the 5/2 was just a little too much run, so your pace was a little slower during the run portion, or, if you were pushing it, you could have walked slower since you were more tired from running, lol. I still think you did a great job though..

We are up in Orlando right now doing the parks for the weekend, so I won't get to do my long run until tomorrow night.. I'll let you know what intervals I end up doing:)

Great job on the travel plans!!! I haven't signed up for that target card yet, but man that sounds like a great deal, especially with the pharmacy coupon people talk about!

I'd love to see buddy too! I think it may be too early for the line up-- fingers crossed!!
