The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Things I learned today: 1/ I'm not ever going to be able to start a run before 10:30 am unless zombies are chasing me or it's an actual race day. 2/ If I try to get out to run before 10:30 am, I might accidentally put my running shorts on inside out. :rotfl2: True story, luckily I didn't make it out of the house like that haha!

Got two miles done and this heat is brutal. No clue how I'm supposed to get six in on friday, which is where I'm at in my training. Mile one was really good today, since Nike kept telling me I was running at under 10minutes, so I kept trying to go faster LOL. Then I got home and plugged the thing in and I'm back to my old slow turtle pace. Ah well at least I survived!

Good luck to everyone else who is out there in this crazy heat today!!

In other news, got our tix for MVMCP for Nov 8th in the mail yesterday. Anyone else going the night before the race?

I first read that you put your shoes on inside out and I was not sure how that would be possible. Lol.

I am planning to go on the 8th to MVMCP too but I have not purchased my ticket yet

In all of these times out the door I've NEVER regretted going on a run. I've only regretted the times I didn't.:yay:
Love IT! :thumbsup2

Ariel - Glad you feel better about transferring from the full to the half. Now let the FUN training begin. :woohoo:

PlutoBaby - Great job on the 4 miles! Always happens just as you are getting your stride you feel better, and then it is over ;)

peachygreen - enjoy that 10 miler. My kids can't wait to do another kids fun run. They actually ask me pretty often. My daughter is really into the bling :lmao: Can't wait to hear your report.

sully&mike - Glad you are ok! That sounds like it could have been really scary. Makes us all realize that in this heat we all need to really hydrate before those runs. So glad all is fine. :goodvibes

capeseal - Great job on those morning check ins! You go girl for getting out there! :worship:

I think I am almost to date. I know I missed a few:worried: but I am :listen: ;)

DH is going into work an hour early this week. So instead of 5:30a I will have to leave at 4:30a for my runs. I did not go yesterday. Debating on whether I will go tomorrow or not. That is just too early. But I had a goal against myself in my Nike app and I am almost there. I might push in the morning and go out at dark thirty and get my miles in.

Lol!! I don't know how anyone runs before noon!

We are going to the Christmas Party on Monday, 11/11

I'll be there! We're hanging out with Winnie the Pooh and friends for dinner. I'm so excited to see snow on Main St!

I'm sorry day 1 was a bust for you, but you got out there and tried - that's more than a lot of people do. What's that saying...you got further than the guy sitting on the couch? Question - did you get fitted for running shoes? The right shoes might help support your knees and ankles better - something with more stability may help. If you get a chance, head to your nearest running store. They should be able to help you find a pair of shoes that works for you. After your week on the Life Cycle (is that a bike?) maybe you can start by walking for a few days to see how that feels. Hang in there!

A life cycle is one of those bicycle type machines where you sit slightly reclined and the pedals are a but in front of the seat. Walking won't be an issue. I can already do a 5K walk on rolling hills and altitude (over a mile high here!) at a 16:30 pace. But i want to lose 40 lbs and significantly improve that pace. I am a very goal oriented guy. I lost 50 lbs three years ago to complete a 70 mile backpack trip with my son at Philmont. Unfortunately I was successful in refinding those 50 lbs once Philmont was over. So we signed up or this 5K because we are Disney nuts and will be on vacation there at that time, and as inspriation for Dad (me) to get in better shape.

Ummmm...you are the hard core runner here! I don't think I'd even entertain a 4:30am run. I would just skip my training for a week. I may like to run early but not before the summer sun comes up ;). I mean, I think I could handle 5:15/5:30 runs if I had to but not 4:30. Very impressed by your dedication! Hope it is a short-term adjustment to your training time. If you have to go any earlier, you won't have to worry about night training runs because your insanely early runs will be close enough :rotfl:

Wednesday running check-in. (Is it really only Wednesday?) Did 3.5 miles this morning at a 10-minute-mile pace. Finished strong because I ended up running with a group of Army guys doing their morning PT for the last mile. I was not going to let the main pack of them beat me so I really picked up my pace at the end. I'm taking tomorrow off and will attempt 4-miles on Friday morning. And I may attempt a weights class at the gym tonight if I'm not too worn out by 5:30 :rolleyes1. We'll see...

Good luck with the weight session!

I did 10 on Sunday and another 3 yesterday. The plan was to do 4 but I didn't want to push it with the heat. Hopefully tomorrow will cool down a bit or else I'll have to start the run before sunrise again. I hate running in the dark!

I'm leaving for Disneyland on Saturday so I'm also trying to decide if I should do my 12 mile run on Friday before we leave or just skip it until the following sunday when we return. Decisions, Decisions.

Me too! :) I'm hoping for a big PR during that race.

Yowza...4:30AM! That's great that you're figuring out a way to get your miles in even when your husband's work schedule is changing. We need a high-5 icon!

Okay, gotcha. It probably goes without saying, but you won't believe how much of a different losing weight will make. I lost 30 pounds last year and (currently hoping to lose 10-15 more) and it made running so much easier and more enjoyable. I once read somewhere that for every 10 pounds lost your pace goes down 20 seconds...no idea if that's true but boy would that be awesome!

A 70-mile backpack trip...wow! That sounds amazing! I feel you with gaining the weight back (which is why I am still trying to lose 10-15...because I gained some of the 30 I lost back :headache:). It's incredibly frustrating how easy it is to backslide.

Do you have good running shoes that you're using while doing C25K? That makes a huge difference. It would probably also be a lot easier if the temperature was about 20 degrees cooler and the humidity was 40% less, but I digress...:crazy2:

Okay, great, glad to hear that you're liking it so far. Some of the paces they generated for me make me nervous, but pushing myself a little bit won't kill me. Good luck with your Columbus training!

Some of my paces made me nervous too, but so far I've been able to handle them. I know you will too. Just remember that you may have to back off a little from their pacing if the heat and humidity stay as high as they have been around here. I had a tempo run today and knew I would NEVER safely make pace outside, so I headed to the Worthington Rec Ctr to the track.

I just hit 9.5 miles this weekend so I'm a little ahead and seem to be cruising. DH and I have been talking about what to do next.

He suggests to keep building my miles, then using my short runs to do speed work on the track at the middle school by our house while keeping the miles high on my long runs.

Maybe I can improve my anticipated time!

Can't believe I'm this close!!!!

TigerTown Have a great time in Disneyland. Never been there. Someday. Have a great 12 mile run too.

Denice - You are doing great with your mileage! You are practically there and we still have a bit to go before the race! :cool1: Congrats!

Capeseal - well I considered your response to me yesterday a challenge and I was totally ready to get out there this morning. I set the alarm for 4 and everything. The alarm went off and I could not move. :worried::( I was so darn tired I just could not get up. I am mad at myself now. I did get a 30 minute Firm Cardio workout in. So I got something done. Maybe I will try for a quick run tonite. But no promises there. I am not home a lot of nights and when I am the kids don't let me out of their sight! :rotfl: There is always tomorrow, right? ;)

Oh yeah, the weather makes a huge difference. This morning I did a 5-mile tempo run with the middle 3 miles @ 9:37...it was challenging but I did it and felt sooooo good afterward. I don't like tempo runs all that much (because they are difficult for me...which probably means I need to do more of them :crazy2:) but I really like doing speedwork, so I'm looking forward to that.

Props to you for getting to the indoor track. Somehow I find indoor tracks tougher mentally than treadmills, and I REALLY don't like running on the treadmill all that much. It sure beats running outside right now though.

What you did is better than nothing, definitely! It's sooooo hard to get up that early. Maybe you just really needed the sleep. :confused3

OH...and before I forget, here are updated registration numbers:

5K: 82% full
kids races: 53% full
After Party: 54% full
Pre-race Taste: 87% full

I need to get my husband's after-party ticket soon...the price jumps up August 14 so I definitely want to buy it before that jump. I wonder if it'll fill a lot before then? :confused3

Ran 3.1 miles this morning before my conference started. Well actually I skipped the first session so I could do my run because 1) I overslept a little and 2) I wasn't really interested in the first session. I really shouldn't drink the night before a planned run. I don't drink often, but I could tell I did last night

Don't beat yourself up! When it comes to getting up that early, you are really fighting your body on a biological level. It isn't laziness, it is your body's natural setting and hormones forcing you back down. That's so hard to fight! Is this just a one week schedule change or a permanent shift in your DH's schedule? If it is just a week of super early work hours, I'd get my sleep and not try to mess with my body's natural rhythms :)

Ugh! The heat index is supposed to hit 105 today:scared1: I was thinking about skipping a run (again...haven't run since Saturday:worried:) but the hubby changed my mind. DH decided to really try and get back into his running since he still has not fully recovered from his injury. He went out and tried a run today. When he left the house, he said, "I may be back in 20 minutes...I may be back in an hour....who knows." He went out just after noon in 95-degree heat and came back after doing 1.75 miles. He was extremely disappointed since his typical runs were 4-6 miles, pre-injury. I told him that he is still ahead of me since I haven't left the couch:lmao: and that it's more important that he *did* it and not how far or how long he ran. So now, I *have* to run today! Since I don't have to get up early tomorrow, I can go out tonight when it cools down a bit. Now I have a distance to shoot for too. I usually don't go out unless I can do at least 2 miles. I haven't run in this kind of heat so it will be interesting to see how I do. I can hydrate all day long:drinking1!

Think I am caught up on reading the thread!! Lots of great information on here!!
This will be my second Disney half. I did the Princess in 2011. I had a blast. I talked my brother and sister-in-law in to doing the wine and dine with me.
I started the Galloway training plan and so far so good.
I am currently a morning runner. I get up at 5am so I can be back home with kids before my husband leaves for work. When I go back to work full time I will likely become an evening runner. I am definitely looking forward to some cooler weather!!

The whole "morning vs. evening" has me a little concerned. I worked my whole career (14 years) as a night-shifter. This January, I switched over to a day shift (7a-7p) which did not bother me at all. It has put me in a bit of a training quandry...run before work or after work???:confused3

Before work
...PROS...
...it's cooler...it's dark and peaceful...it energizes me...
...CONS..
...insufficient time to fuel/hydrate before running...time constraint (must be done in time to get to work) means can't just keep going...I would have to get up between 3-4am for the long runs:eek: since I have to be in the shower by 5:45am.

After work
...PROS...
...no time limit...it's cooler...plenty of time to hydrate/fuel throughout the day...don't have to get up before the crack of dawn...the race will be held at night so this would simulate the schedule
...CONS...
...I never know when I will actually get out of work (could be 7, could be 9:headache:)...much lower energy after a 12-hour workday...it energizes me making it difficult to go to bed soon after the run

I've kind of alternated between getting up at 4am and running 3-4 miles before work and waiting until the afternoon/evening and running 3-5 miles on my days off. For all you experienced runners, is it really important to keep on the same schedule or is it OK to mix it up? I have problems if I do an afternoon/evening run and then get up early the next morning for a pre-dawn run. Switching it up can prove to be problematic from a scheduling perspective. I don't want to injure myself, but I really need to improve my running duration. I have to be more consistent in running for 90+ minutes. So far, I've only done it once, mostly because of schedules and the weather.

Me too! :)

You mean trying to do this is a pair of $40 hiking sneakers ain't such a good idea? Took your advise and bought a pair of Adidas adizero sonic 4's this afternoon. I hope to give them a full work-put tomorrow and see how much they help.
