The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Failed on day one using the C25K app. My knees and ankles simply wouldn't take the pounding with my weight. Going to hit the life cycle hard for a week in an attempt to build my joint strength.

In regards to calibrating the Nano for nike- I know there is a way to do it, I forget how and don't have my nano in front of me at the moment. I feel like after the run, there's something you can hit that says "calibrate this run" or something. Or maybe it's under settings? This is the least helpful response ever LOL! I just know I calibrated mine using the 1 mile loop at my favorite park. I don't know if it's super accurate, but it seems to work well enough.

And yes, to the person who said their Nike freaked out on them once, LOL! Mine has done that once too. Earlier this year I ran a seven min. mile. ummm nope :)

For those that have gone to MK during the week of marathon, do they have the castle decorated in lights for the holiday or this week too early?

When I get down about my running, or life tries to get in the way of training I head up the tube and end up watching videos like this to remind me why I trudge on through those mental barriers to participate in this amazing human experience.

Aw crap, now I'm sitting here at work crying ..my boss must think I'm a lunatic. Oh wait...she already does!!! :rotfl2:

It was a great ego booster though, wasn't it??

Christmas decorations are not up yet with the Wine and Dine. They have had the Osborne lights up each year. These are on when you run through Hollywood Studios, but not during park hours. They are also not running the shows. I think it takes so long to get it all set up that they start earlier with these.

You need a 10k time for corral placement right? Do you know when Id need to submit it. I guess I should just go to the RunDisney site.

Getting ready to go for a 3-4 mile run shortly.

You can email your official 10k time to Run Disney. I did that.

I completed my first race ever. A local 10k with a time of : 55:36 (which was just plain awesome for me).

I did email RUNDISNEY and got my official 10k time added for Corral placement. It converted to a 2:05:00 1/2 marathon time. I've got no clue what the might be for 1/2 placement, but it'll probably not be LAST, anymore. So, GOAL achieved! The process was really easy and fast. I did provide the finishers list - so the official 'proof' of my time.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Next - folks are asking what devices/apps they use to track runs. I use Map My Run. I don't know if it is good or bad. I just started using it at the beginning and keep on using it. I like that all of my runs are stored in one place and I can compare. I see good days/bad days. I can plan where I want to go/see courses...there are even some competitive runs out there. I like it for the most part. When I get my iPhone on 8/1, I'll even have my pace on there. I cannot wait to purge my Galaxy from my world. I think that with all apps/etc, once you get started with something, you keep with it. It stores your history. It was quirky for me once. It had me running across water in Pgh where there was no bridge to complete a 5:43 min/mile. GO ME!

Lastly, I had a scary run on Sunday. I run probably 5 times/week. My long run is almost to 8 miles now. We were doing a long slow run. (My avg pace is typically 8:45 min/mile or so for my 3-4 mile runs ~ we were pacing 10 min/mile). I'd planned it mostly in a shaded 1-mile loop in a park. SIL said that would bore her too quickly and we had to branch out onto the roads. So, we did. It was all sunny and it was super hot - high 80s. My daughter's bday parties (yes, a family party and a friend party) were the day before and I admittedly did NOT hydrate well. Oh my goodness, around mile 4, I started hitting a really nice stride and then all of the sudden I got the CHILLS. Crazy chills. We had to slow down to a walk for about a 1/4 mile and then headed back. We only did 5.3 miles instead of my planned 8. SIL said that I was in the beginnings of heat stroke. Nice. :( I didn't run yesterday and I'm planning to run tonight, but to be quite honest, I'm terrified. I'm only planning about 3 miles. I'm hoping that they're an easy 3. I'm scared to push hard. I'm scared to push at all. I'm a fairly new runner (started running in May), so this is my first time running & experiencing the heat/humidity. I don't have a treadmill or gym membership, so it is all outdoor running for me!

The Christmas parties start on Friday before W&D 1/2, so all of the Christmas decor should be up in MK by that weekend.

Aww, that made me all teary!!:love:

I'm so sorry about your scary run. Glad you stopped and changed your plan. That was a smart move. I remember getting terrible chills around mile 8 of ToT. I think it was the heat/humidity/distance/lack of training. I walked half a mile, had a drink, and then started up again at a slower pace. Anyway, it never happened again and hasn't happened since. Take your time. Listen to your body. Just take it at a pace that feels good to you and your body will adjust as long as you aren't pushing too hard every time you run. Maybe force yourself to keep a 9:15 pace for the first half, if you are worried, and then you can pick it up for the last half. Good luck!

Morning check-in:

Got out a little late this morning (after 6am) but still managed 3.15 miles in about 31 minutes. I am STILL very sore from my Saturday hike. When I left the house, I told DH to expect me back in five minutes ;). But, as it usually goes, after I got started, it just made more sense to get it done :). I find that if I commit to half a mile to just see how my body feels, I almost always decide to just push and get my miles in since I'm already outside and warmed up. The one thing I have going for me this week is that the early morning temperatures are going to be beautiful and cool (just under 60.) Anyway, I plan to run tomorrow, Thursday, and maybe Friday if I am feeling super motivated. I also have a plan in the works to sleep in on Saturday (Shhhh! Don't tell my DH ;)) and that only works if I do run #4 on Friday. I just hope the soreness eases up by later this week because I don't know how I am going to spend today chasing the kids. I just want to soak in a tub and hobble to the freezer for ice and ice cream :p.

I got the official word yesterday that my race transfer from the full to the half went through, so I feel much better than I did yesterday. :goodvibes And I started my new training plan this morning! It's a SmartCoach plan from RunnersWorld.com...never used one before but have always been curious. I hope it's not a disaster! This morning called for 2 miles, so I did that on the treadmill and then did Ab Ripper X.

When I get down about my running, or life tries to get in the way of training I head up the tube and end up watching videos like this to remind me why I trudge on through those mental barriers to participate in this amazing human experience.
I'm gonna watch that later...but it sounds like I should wait until I get home so my mascara doesn't run. :)

I'm sorry day 1 was a bust for you, but you got out there and tried - that's more than a lot of people do. What's that saying...you got further than the guy sitting on the couch? Question - did you get fitted for running shoes? The right shoes might help support your knees and ankles better - something with more stability may help. If you get a chance, head to your nearest running store. They should be able to help you find a pair of shoes that works for you. After your week on the Life Cycle (is that a bike?) maybe you can start by walking for a few days to see how that feels. Hang in there!
The Christmas parties start on Friday before W&D 1/2, so all of the Christmas decor should be up in MK by that weekend.
Wow, really? Very cool. :thumbsup2 Everything but the tree, I guess.

We were up in the high 70s when I got out the door at 6 this morning! I think your strategy of committing to half a mile is a good one - the first 0.25-0.5 miles always feels the worst for me, then once I get warmed up it inevitably gets better (unless I'm just having a terrible day). Hope the soreness gets better and the kiddos don't make you chase them too much! :goodvibes

Managed to force myself out this morning for 3.1 miles before my conference started. I know why I normally do my weekday runs at night. I'm stiff now.

It was a beautiful run along the lake in Madison Wi. I think it was hotter and more humid here than when I normally run in Houston.

I've decided to run a local 10 mile race in September to help my coral placement. They have a kids 1 mile run afterwards that I'm going to sign the girls up for. I'll let the 7 year old rub on her own and ill go with the 3 year old. It should be fun for them.

You should have seen me at the airport yesterday. I walked from one end of the terminal to the other about 7 times with my heavy backpack and suitcase to get my steps in for the day. I got some very odd looks

Glad your transfer went through and that you are happy! I am using the SmartCoach plan for the first time too. I'm training for the Columbus Full in Oct. So far I have liked the plan and am doing well with it.

Hope you like it too!

Tonight? So hot after work when I ran that it was eerily silent except for cicadas. I went slow. It felt good to be wading through the heat and humidity in a mental sense, because I could go just as easy as I needed to. Nobody makes me run. It's something I do for myself.:goodvibes

Finally caught a breeze on the way home... then a shower and stretch...

In all of these times out the door I've NEVER regretted going on a run. I've only regretted the times I didn't.:yay:

This was the plan that I started with, and I remember those first few runs and how hard they were. Keep it up! Rooting for you! :cheer2:

LOL Yep!.... until I realized that now I will probably never actually beat my "best mile ever" LOL. Oh well :)

I know! I'll miss Joan Benoit-Samuelson saying Congratulations! :lmao:

Managed to get another 4 miles in last night, but boy! My legs felt like lead until I hit mile 3. Somedays the pavement just is NOT my friend...:faint:

Good luck training for your 10-miler! I think that's my favorite distance to race. LOL at you getting your steps in...there's a woman in my department at work that does the same thing around our kitchen area. :teeth:

Okay, great, glad to hear that you're liking it so far. Some of the paces they generated for me make me nervous, but pushing myself a little bit won't kill me. Good luck with your Columbus training!

I love the visual of you marching around the airport. Great job on getting up and running while you are traveling for work. I always go into travel with the best intentions to run and almost never do as much as I should. In fact, I think the only time I've run in Disney was when we did ToT.

I was thinking of this as I dragged myself out this morning. Our littlest had a hard time going to sleep and then woke us up and the last thing I wanted to do when the alarm went off at 5:55 was lace up my sneakers. (Especially when DH hit the snooze button. But I thought about what you said and how I have so often felt the same and got my run in. The only time I did regret a run was the time when I pushed myself through pain and really injured myself by blowing a bulging disc. I have since had to decide to commit to a half a mile and see where my body stands. But I never regret getting out and giving it a try. (And 95% of the time, I finish my miles.)

I know! I'll miss Joan Benoit-Samuelson saying Congratulations! :lmao:

I despise pavement but concrete sidewalks make my body hurt just thinking about them. I am very fortunate that my 3-3.5 mile loop is mostly on dirt and gravel. My longer runs, unfortunately, are mostly pavement.

Wednesday running check-in. (Is it really only Wednesday?) Did 3.5 miles this morning at a 10-minute-mile pace. Finished strong because I ended up running with a group of Army guys doing their morning PT for the last mile. I was not going to let the main pack of them beat me so I really picked up my pace at the end. I'm taking tomorrow off and will attempt 4-miles on Friday morning. And I may attempt a weights class at the gym tonight if I'm not too worn out by 5:30 :rolleyes1. We'll see...
