The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Thank you both for the input about my dining timing. DH wants me to keep our ADR at LeCellier (4:10pm) because he wants cheese soup and pretzel bread. I have done early morning runs (with no food before the run) and I don't do well...obviously. I have found that my best runs are in the early afternoon/evening after eating a normal diet throughout the day.

Hmmm, maybe I will go back to my plan of making my pasta salad in the room and eating that before we leave. I cook up a box of pasta (I prefer the bowties) and mix it a can (or 2) of tuna, a can of peas, and Fat-Free Miracle Whip to hold it all together. It's delicious hot or cold. My mom used to make a whole batch of it for me back in high school when we had our all-day softball tournaments and it got me through a lot of long days. Since we are in a studio and all of the ingredients are shelf-stable, it would be very easy to bring everything with me. I have a "pasta boat" that cooks up pasta in the microwave so I'll add that to my list.

Ugh...the dining stuff is really getting to me. I usually have a problem narrowing down my restaurant choices. Now, the only ADR's that I am absolutely set on are breakfast at Boma on our departure day (that's a tradition) and "lunch" at Sanaa at 1:30 on Sunday. I call it lunch, but since we won't be back to the resort until about 5am, it will be breakfast for us:cool2:. I just can't get myself to make any ADR's because I really have no idea how often we are going to go to the parks. We have 4-day park hoppers but I am not even sure we will go to the parks for 4 days. Good grief:sad2:...I just want to "wing it", but I know that is not usually conducive to a smooth trip when you are talking about Disney:scared:.

Call the restaurant a week out and explain that you would like a light pasta offering. The words lasagna and running 5 hours later seem incongruent. I have found that I can usually get something light by asking at the table. I have found making the call makes it more certain. Since it is race weekend, they may have an off menu offering planned.

Trying to build the mental motivation to do my 19k this weekend. We are away all day Saturday and that night into the next morning. So my options are tomorrow night or Sunday late afternoon. I find these Long runs mentally challenging. Once I am 5k in, it doesn't seem like as big a deal (well, until maybe 10k) but starting is a little daunting. Does anyone else find this?

Many folks do. Mine are more along the line of pure boredom rather than daunting. I find that if I set an appointment on my calendar I am much more likely to make a run. I also was much more motivated when I had a partner to run with or a coach/trainer to report back to. I would also suggest planning on the earlier time - that allows a slide to the later period just in case.

Starting is always daunting, hence why so few people start!

I find mine is always around Mile 4. My last long run before the DLR 10K was an 11-miler. I just about quit at Mile 4. I pulled over, paused RunKeeper, and had a nice, long conversation with myself. I had reached a "fork in the road" in my route too and could've taken the short way and gone home.

So I sucked it up, turned away from home and popped out 11 miles. I welled up at Mile 10.5 b/c I knew I was going to make it and if I could do 11, I could do 13.1.

We're so close!

Now, that was almost a month ago. I'm gonna try for 9.5 on Sunday even though it's been awhile since I've done a "long" run. Here's hoping I have the same mental resolve!

It definitely is a huge mental game I think. I'm following a schedule that has me do a long run Saturday and 4 miles on Sunday. Almost ever Saturday I go out I have to talk myself out of just flipping and doing the 4 miler and doing the long run Sunday. These miles aren't going to run themselves ;) lol

I am not signed up for this race this year but will sign up for next years race. It looks like a lot of fun. I never really checked it out before. I am doing the marathon weekend in January...but I will be looking out for this when registration opens for '14.

I've not only flipped them, but I stuck the shorter of them on Thursday/Friday--I need a weekend day to sleep in and relax in the event that anything falls apart. Mostly (especially during the summer) I needed one day a week where I could just sit in bed as long as I wanted...

On another topic, I have come up with another race-day plan...

MK in the morning...we just want to check out the new Fantasyland, PotC, and Buzz Lightyear (I have to beat DH at least once in my life:lmao:). We'll probably grab breakfast at Main Street Bakery (Starbucks...do they accept Starbucks gift cards???)

From MK, we'll head over to the Expo and get our bibs. We will have to make it a quick trip because I want to be back at the AKV by 1pm. Then, it is nap time:cloud9:. I want to leave the resort by 5pm and head to Epcot. We'll walk through Epcot (no attractions) and head to the Dolphin for dinner. I'm thinking about the lasagna meal at Picabu...looks like a great carb option. After dinner (hopefully around 7), we'll head to the Boardwalk and grab the bus to the start line.

Comments? Does it sound doable??

Since you're asking for input... ;)

That does sound like a pretty ambitious day before the race, but only you know what your legs of capable of handling. I think we have two camps here: those that hit up a park early in the day and head back to rest in the afternoon, and those (like me) who pretty much veg out the whole day and watch football. I tried to keep calm last year and nap, but between not knowing if the DH would be able to run that night (he got sick at the last minute ), and having a room too close to the elevator (super light sleeper :scared:), kind of squashed those plans. Plus, I was so worked up not knowing what to expect, there was just no eating sensibly beforehand. I had picked up a turkey sub to snack on in the room around 5pm, but I only managed a few bites of it. A protein bar about 9:30 that night helped and I snacked on some Honey Stingers throughout the race, and that was enough to get me through the night. I can't imagine downing something as heavy as lasagna, but I think I am going to steal your tuna/pasta salad idea. YUM! :lmao: I would maybe try and experiment BEFORE race day and see how you tolerate everything. :thumbsup2

And best of luck on the 10k! :cheer2:

I've been sick with sinuses and a bad cough all week and hadn't run. Last night I forced myself to go out for about 3 miles. Ugh it sucked. It was hot and muggy and I felt pretty miserable. I ran earlier than I normally would because I had some time to run while my daughter was in dance and I wanted to make sure I was able to watch the kickoff game for the 2013 NFL season.

It really was a bad run. I did it but it was awful. 10.5 miles on Saturday morning. I hope it goes much better than the 3 miles did.

I don't really want to do too much in the morning, but I know I'll be awake by 6 anyways and I will need to "tire myself out" in order to take a nap. There's no way I'll make it through the race without an afternoon nap.

I think the tuna salad in the room is going to be our game plan for dinner. We'd thought about maybe Sanaa right after returning from Expo (around 1) which would let us nap a little later before heading out to Epcot, but DH has never eaten there so he doesn't know how it would effect him. I love the tandoori chicken sandwich and he bread service so maybe I'll get it for me and make tuna salad for him;)

That'll teach ya to put football ahead of running! JK. Sorry it stunk. I usually find that after a really bad run, I have a really good one. So good luck tomorrow!

I agree with Plutobaby regarding the two approaches to the day. I'm only a napper when I rise before 6 or do a long run in the AM. Otherwise, I cannot nap. So starting on Thursday morning, I start sleeping in and staying up later... By saturday, I can usually sleep in til at least 9:30-10. Then we have brunch in the room (usually pancakes for me), head over to the expo, drive towards Celebration to pick up my pre-run Subway turkey sandich dinner, and head back to the room for some laziness. Last year was fun because I got to meet up with my college roommate who lives in a different state from us, so we visited with her on Sat afternoon. I ate dinner around 5:30, got dressed and ready to go and was on the first bus to the starting line. I found the pre-race festivities a lot of fun and I even made some new friends!

And like Pluto, I was literally bouncing all over the room with nervous anticipation! DH was SO glad to put me on the bus.

Whatever you end up planning to do that day - don't forget to carry around your bottles of gatorade/powerade and water and drink a little throughout the day!

With two little ones accompanying us, resting and napping isn't much of an option on race day. Last year for ToT, we got up and spent the morning in Epcot, then went to 1900 Park Fare for a 4:30 dinner and got DS back to the room (taking a bus to HS and then hiking back to YC) and in bed and put on a movie for DD in my parents' room before slipping out for the race. (Luckily, we were at YC.) We did a lot of walking on race day before hitting the starting line!

This year we are at WL so I don't know what our options will be aside from regular race transport. (Where is the race start? HS?) I am hoping we can take it a little easier pre-race. We are not planning a park day, just the pool if weather cooperates or DtD if it doesn't. There isn't a real option for rest with the two kiddos bouncing around but I am hopeful that they want to nap or at least watch a movie in the late afternoon, then we will send them with the grandparents for dinner or all head to a QS at the hotel to eat something light.

Am I the only one already nervous about the weather? What was W&D like last year? ToT was horrible for humidity in 2012, especially coming in from CO and running at the end of a weeklong trip. I am so hopeful that early November is a little less stifling, though I know in Florida, anything can happen.

I'm nervous about humidity.
I run so much better in lower humidity. I've struggled through a lot of runs this summer in high humidity. I'm just hoping that it being a night-time run, the humidity won't be as rough of a factor. That and the November timeframe.

That said, here in PA, the weather/humidity is a non-issue. Today was BEAUTIFUL. I switched my long run a day early! I did it today, rather than Saturday. And, instead of my planned 8...I did 9! 9 slow/easy miles. 9:02/1:23:07. (9:13/mile) Felt awesome. :goodvibes

Good luck, everyone, with long runs this weekend!

Just about 2 months to go now!

I'm with you guys on hoping the humidity goes down. I'm in FL,and have been either doing my runs early in the morning 6 am or after 7 pm. Both times it is still far too humid. I ran TOT13K in 2009 and that was around last week in Oct. I remember it being warm during the day,but it did cool off some once the sun went down.

12 miles done! My runkeeper went wonky during my emergency pit stop so I don't know if it counted that as time or not. So one way or the other, 19k was done in 2:55! Yay!

My final run this week is done! Now to recharge before Sundays long run (8 miles). I'm going to have to figure out a better schedule tho. Friday nights are really LOW energy for me!

Regarding the weather at last years wine and dine (2012) - I hope for an exact repeat. It literally was perfect. Dry, cool (55 I think), not humid and remember- no sun! I really REALLY REALLY hope for the exact same this year - ill even take it a little cooler but honestly it was good.

Whoever said the humidity has left PA is right! It's so much better out there now. If it could just stay this weather until feb 21st, I'd be really happy!

Just about 2 months to go now!

Technically, it is the dew point creating the concern. If the dew point is in the 70’s it can be miserable running weather. Once the DP falls into the lower 60’s and below most folks have little issue with it.

The great news is that the DP in November is like most folk’s September running. Last W&D the starting temp was in the lower 60’s and DP in the mid-50’s. It may have felt warm for some, but very manageable. Note that 2012 was a little cooler than average. The norms are a low of 60 and a high of 80.

On the other hand, the ToT weekend (the original W&D weekend) the start weather was 74 F with a DP of 70. Look at the photos on runD and you will see that it just looked hot… and it was. I guess this is to say that the extra month brings in a little cooling making the race temps a little better for all.

Hope everyone had some good long runs this morning!
I did 8.5 in 80 minutes this morning, had a bit of a hiccup with a creeper driving slow taking pictures out of his car window that led to a call to the lovely cops. Hope it was just someone being an idiot, but too much stuff goes on in my city.
