The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Yeah, I have trouble getting going again too. I may walk a little at the later water stops, if I am fumbling to get a good drink of water into me, but if I stop and get in line for a picture, I am afraid I'll have trouble getting going again. It is a better strategy for me to run right through.

Ah! A dead ipod battery would really bum me out. Great job getting through your planned run and for finding a formula that works for you. I have found that my formula is "don't stop running." If I slow to a walk or stop, I have a terrible time picking it up again.

Yeah, me too. I do stop for very short water breaks but I find the run/walk method very difficult for me to get into a groove. However, I find that the worst miles are the first 2.5. I do whatever I can to not stop during then! Those are the miles that I say "what was I thinking signing up for 13 miles?!?!" But then magically, it gets better.... :)

Hi all! Can't believe we're two months away already :) Slowly getting back in the groove, but boy was it hot out today! What happened to fall... I am still waiting LOL.

Meanwhile, the new New Balance shoes (the ones similar to the rundisney ones) work really well for work shoes... not so great for running. Back to the running store I went, and now I'm in Saucony Triumphs. LOVE!!

As far as shooting for a PR, this will also be my first half, so I'm just hoping to finish. I have some personal ideas about what I could get my time to, but I won't be going for that bc I'm running with my BFF. She has an old injury that's going to slow us down a bit, so if we can hold to a 14 min/ mile I think that's about where we'll be. Somehow in all that, I hope to have a couple stops along the way. I've found during the past two long runs I've done that I actually like taking short breaks. I run on a loop and keep a cooler/towel/running treats in the car, so about 1/3 and 2/3 of the way through I run back to the car for what usually works out to be about 5min off the clock. Hasn't slowed me down and forces me to take a longer walk break :) All of you folks who just keep running, I have no idea how you do it. Right now I'm trying to get my running mileage up a bit so that I'm not running 30sec/walk 30sec for the first twenty minutes... this seems like it will trip me up during the 10k I'm going to run next month.

Anyway, that's what's going on here. Happy running, everybody! I'm hoping for lower temps and 9-10 miles this weekend.

I said I wasn't going to try and PR this race since I have a marathon two weeks before but secretly, in the deep, dark, depths of my soul and running ravaged brain... I want to go under two hours (my last 1/2 PR was 2:04 in April) and I want to do it at Wine & Dine. I PR'd by about 18 minutes last year at Wine and Dine (I was in agonizing pain afterwards for about 2 weeks) and it's so nice and flat...

I still remember seeing the laser beams and looking at my watch--I wanted 2:20 and I was so close I just keep thinking, "where's the finish?!"

This will be my first 1/2 so an automatic PR! I'd like to get a couple fun pics but once I start on a run I'm not real good at stopping then starting again. I'm hoping some photo ops happen during a walk interval :)

This will be my first 1/2 and automatic PR too!

Here is my plan...

I want to get a picture of each mile marker. I also want to try and maintain a 12:00/mile pace. I do the walk/run method but I also have a little problem starting up the run portions. I do fine once I get going, but I do need the breaks. I have settled on 8/4...run 8 minutes, walk 4 minutes...as my 1/2 marathon pace. I tweaked it a little so I can get pictures. I will START by walking 4 minutes, then running 8. That way, I should be at or near each mile marker at some point during my 4 minute walk sessions. That will give me an opportunity to take the picture without breaking up my running interval by too much.

It will feel weird crossing the starting line by walking, but I know that endurance is my biggest hurdle and if I do not stick to my training program and follow my plan, I will be in bad shape at the end...if I even make it to the end. Every run I've done when I try to start out with a run interval has ended in disaster. Maybe it's just in my head, but if I have to walk first to have a great run, then so be it! Who cares, right?

Me too! True shoe love... :thumbsup2

Agreed! ::yes:: For me, it's that first 1-1.5 miles before my system realizes that it just better suck it up, 'cause this chica is NOT going to stop anytime soon. :hyper:

Oh yes, I remember that. The "have I just ingested some kind of Disney acid at the last water stop and fallen down the rabbit hole?" finish. :duck:

I'm registered for this race but still recovering from an injury. I did Dumbo a few weeks ago and although I did finish I was in pain afterwards from my injury and lack of training. I am also registered for TOT but this darn injury is really messing with my training.

AHHHHHHH!!!! I hated those bleeping laser beams. And don't forget there was a corner you had to round too, so you couldn't even see the finish! It was a cruel cruel joke on the newbies like me. Wouldnt' it be funny (not) if this year the laser beam/fog tunnel was actually at the end and all of us kept on running another half mile like, "oops!" (har har... I'm not serious). All I could think was "Where (gasp gasp) Is (gasp gasp) the (gasp gasp) END?!?!?!? (gasp GASP!)

At princess, they get a gospel choir. At W&D, we get Lady Gaga and a fog machine. :)

Went for a short two miler today. Mainly to get back into the swing of things since I had been sticking to the water for the last couple of workout since I got home a last week on Wednesday. Been meaning to go for a run but had been putting it off.

But when I found out about the Run, Zombies app thanks to Tumblr last night curiousity got the better of me and I decided I wanted to check it out. It was enough to get me out for a earlier in the day run (I'm usually a night runner for short runs, mainly because other than at races I don't like getting up extremely early). Haven't had that much fun running in a long time. As much as I love running this kind of amped things up a notch and made a threadmill run ten times more entertaining (we have thunderstorms predicted to come in through out the day and I didn't want to get caught in one, so indoor run). I think I am going to start remembering to pack audio books on my mp3 player (I was using my IPhone for this run but for the long runs I have one of those Sony MP3 headphones) for the really long run days since it seems games and stories are better for me on long runs than just plain old music.

Around 15 min/mil for the entire 2.3 miles and I was actually able to sustain a run for a solid almost four minutes there before I had to gear it down. Which is unusual by the time I normally get to the end of the run usually I can maybe hold it for two minutes before I have to gear down. So I am getting better obviously.

Hoping for better weather on Thursday because I really want to take this app out and use it with GPS.

Shoes hit the pavement at 5:04 this morning. :faint::faint::faint:

Had a great run; another sub-12:00 but I forgot to stop RunKeeper when I hit the driveway and it looks much slower than that!

I'm doing a Color Run on Saturday morning and not sure how to balance it with a long run. Hubby said I should do the run in the AM and do the remaining miles in the PM.

Thoughts??

My weekend is similarly spread out- a 5k at sunset Friday and a 10k at sunrise Saturday morning. My coach thinks its fine.

Pulled off a kick-dupa :lmao: 3.2 miler yesterday with an avg. 10:30 pace (including a couple of quick walk breaks to get rid of a side stitch). LOVE those great run days!!!

Good luck on the Color Run! Is it a timed run? I would just have fun with it and save the hard work for the night miles. ::yes::

This thread is really really long and I apologize if this has been discussed before......where is a good place to watch along the route and then get back into Epcot? I was training to do the race with DH but then we got into car wreck and because of a back injury, I'm not allowed to run for the time being. DH is still gonna run and I would like to cheer him on and then meet up with him back in Epcot (since I still have my ticket to the after party ;) )Any suggestions? I thought about somewhere along the boardwalk, can I get into Epcot through the International gateway? Thanks!

I would suggest the area along the boardwalk in front of The Beach Club. Its closest to the International Gateway (which you can enter through) and there are benches to sit. And as a runner, its nice to have someone (even strangers) cheering that close to the end.

I did a 5k fun run at 10pm a few weeks ago followed by 13.5 miles the next morning. I average 13-14min per mile and did ok. It was about 9 hours between runs. you should be able to do it all in one day.

I am so excited- this is the first weekend I have been waiting for! Tomorrow night I do a 5k and Saturday morning a 10k for the Tartan Twosome at Maritime Race Weekend! Hoping for a good time in the 10k, so I am going to be a turtle in the 5k. Of course, it is supposed to rain 50-60 mm here tomorrow thanks to Gabrielle. I hope it passes before Saturday morning!! I don't need any wind messing with my time, I need all the help I can get!

I did my first run today since my 10K on Saturday. It was a little humid out and I was really tired, but I pushed through and did about 3.5 miles in about a 12:00 pace. My Nike+ app has me at 3.50 in 40:20 (11:30 pace) and Garmin has me going 3.37 miles in 40:42 (12:08 pace):confused3...I have no idea why the discrepancy. I started the Nike+ before the Garmin, but it has a 3 second countdown which is when I started the Garmin. When I finished, I stopped the Nike, then the Garmin. I don't know what's up with that.

No matter what my time was, I did fine:goodvibes. I went the distance I set out to do and I did it in under 12:30/mile so nothing else matters. I was wearing my RunDisney shirt so I felt extra special:cool2:.

I've heard many times Nike and other apps being off, when in doubt,go with the Garmin it's suppose to be the most accurate.

I'm ready for these high 90's low 100's temps to go away.

I've been traveling all week with all sorts of travel related issues. I got a nice 3 mile run tonight. I have a 5k race Saturday. It starts at 9 so it will be hot and I'm guessing slow
