The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Technically, it is the dew point creating the concern. If the dew point is in the 70’s it can be miserable running weather. Once the DP falls into the lower 60’s and below most folks have little issue with it.

The great news is that the DP in November is like most folk’s September running. Last W&D the starting temp was in the lower 60’s and DP in the mid-50’s. It may have felt warm for some, but very manageable. Note that 2012 was a little cooler than average. The norms are a low of 60 and a high of 80.

On the other hand, the ToT weekend (the original W&D weekend) the start weather was 74 F with a DP of 70. Look at the photos on runD and you will see that it just looked hot… and it was. I guess this is to say that the extra month brings in a little cooling making the race temps a little better for all.

Mr Wizard signing off

Thanks, Mr Wizard ;)! This makes me feel a bit better about what to expect for W&D. I don't think I'd run ToT again and risk weather conditions similar to last year because I just felt so sick by mile 8 and we ended up leaving after I finished and walking back to our hotel for a shower rather than enjoying the festivities. There were so many runners on the ground, it was probably harder to secure a nice spot on the sidewalk than get on Toy Story Mania, lol. If W&D this year is similar to last, it should mimic at least the temperature at which I've been doing most of my training.

10.5 very hot sticky miles this morning. It was already 80 before we started and humidity was at least equal to the temperature. I finished the 10.5 miles drenched in sweat. I honestly looked like I just stepped out of a pool. Its a good thing I had a towel in my car. The run went pretty well, but I struggled for the last half a mile or so.

I took the kids and my parents to the Katy Heritage museum after my run this morning. I'm tired now. I think I could take a nap with my 3 year old right now.

I did my first official 10K race this morning:dance3:. There were only 30 people in it and I finished 29th overall:lmao:...and that's only because I passed an "older" gentlemen in the last block::yes::. I don't care.... I did it in an 11:30 pace:cool1::cheer2:! My official time was 1:10:20.8 and I was hoping to keep it under 1:15 so I am ecstatic! DH wanted to stay under 1:04 and he finished in 57:?? so he is pretty excited too. The funny thing is that they gave medals to the top three male and female finishers in each age group...DH and I both got second place medals...but of course, there were only 2 people in our respective age groups:rotfl2:. Who cares...we finished:flower3:.

Here's another funny side note... I packed up everything for the race in my backpack. Everything I normally run with...iPhone, earbuds, inhaler, shoes, hat, sunglasses, hydration belt. We drive to the race location (about an hour away) and I realize...DOH:headache:!...I have my hydration belt, but all four water bottles are still sitting in the refrigerator at home:scared1:. So, I downed a 1/2 liter bottle that we had in the car and hoped that they had some water stops along the route. They did...but I think I missed my mouth with most of it. My bib was used as it's name implies:laughing:. I can't run and drink from an open glass at the same time. Some of the volunteer girls asked if I wanted to be splashed with water. I told them sure, but only my back. As I ran past, they did not miss:cloud9:.

The course was nice and flat and mostly paved. There was one section where we left the road and took a two-track on gravel, which I HATED. I am obviously a concrete-type runner because that trail portion was awful. Fortunately, most of it fell during my walk interval and I maintained a 13:00 pace during my walks so I got through most of it before I had to start running again.

I had to hit my inhaler 4 times but I think that was mostly because of the humidity and the fact that we were in a very foliage-rich area. I think allergies were causing me to have a bit more wheezing than I am used to since I normally only hit the inhaler once every 2-3 miles. My feet and knees feel fine but I was a little scared at the starting line. I was bent over stretching out my hamstrings and lower back and when I straightened my left knee, I felt it "click". I bent it and straightened it again...same thing, "click". I had DH put his hands on my knee and did it again..."click". It wasn't painful and I could barely even feel it, but I was unable to reproduce it on my other knee and I am almost certain that knees are not supposed to "click" on command. Like I said, I felt no pain or discomfort so I just ran as usual. After the race, the clicking was gone and I ran pain-free throughout the race. I have a suspicion as to what it was and I don't want to get it confirmed. *IF* it's what I think it is, I've had it my whole life and if it gets formally diagnosed, it will mean no running for 6 months minimum. As long as I don't have a doctor's order, I can't disobey it:rolleyes1. I am planning on seeing the orthopedic doctor *after* the 1/2 marathon. If I do actually sustain an injury, or experience any sort of pain, I will get it diagnosed, skip the race and drown my sorrows at the Food and Wine Festival. Like I said, I think this is a condition I have had my entire life and it has not gotten any worse with running thus far. A few more months should not change anything.

Now that the 10K is done, how do I contact RunDisney to submit our times? I know that it was a chip-timed race and they will post our times on their website. Do I just e-mail RunDisney with the name of the race and what my time was or do they need a more tangible "proof"?

I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend. My next run won't be until Tuesday. I need a break...I did 12 miles on Tuesday, 6 miles on Thursday and another 6 miles today. I can't believe I have run 24 miles in the past 5 days:cheer2:. It's great to have a goal!

Nice Job! The proof of time information is under the "Registration" link on the runDisney website. It's too late to e-mail the information to runDisney, but you can bring it to the expo. I cut and pasted the information below:

If you believe you will finish the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon in less than 2:45 hours, proof of time is required for start corral placement.
Please provide proof of time at the point of registration*. Include:
Name of Race
Year
Distance
Time finished
Proof of time must be provided from a race 10K or longer and must be from a race after July 1, 2011.
If you do not provide proof of time at point of registration but acquire it after you have registered, email the information to disneysports@trackshack.com before September 1, 2013. After September 1, 2013, you will need to bring proof of your estimated finish time to the Runner Relations booth at the Expo to have your start corral placement changed.

Nice to see everyone is still going strong here! :thumbsup2 I took a bit of a break from reading here between, vacation, and the hot summer, I didn't want to obsess too much about this run. I can't believe how fast it is coming up now though! It's time to get serious. ;)

With a drop in humidity this weekend I was able to pull off 11.3 miles in 1:51:10, and I actually felt like I could do more. :yay:

I have come up with a question for you vets. I have read in the Runners Guide to WDW and I think I remember seeing posts here about waiting in line after the race to get your medal engraved. Is there an advantage to having it done then and there? I'm thinking I will want to get in to the after party asap, and would rather go to a local shop when I get home to have it engraved there. Is there any reason I couldn't? I may have even asked this before, but I can't remember the answer. ;)

I set out to do 10 miles yesterday but had to stop at mile 6.5 with too much ankle pain. Guess what a video and a treadmill uncovered? Hey, I'm still a major overpronater, though I was able to ignore it while running only 3-4 miles for the last two years. I picked up a pair of Brooks Adrenaline, which I could tell relieved a ton of pain just from doing laps around the running store parking lot. So, I am going to hit next week with a regular training plan and hope I am back on track. T-W-Th/3-4-3 and then 10 miles on Saturday. Next time maybe I won't procrastinate for three weeks while pain increases to an almost intolerable level.

So, I am running a Mary Relay this Sunday.
OMG....I check email tonight and see this:
John, you are moving to a 4.8 the 3rd leg for your team. You think you can manage???????

Let me summarize my last few weeks of training....
I gained 10 pounds at Musikfest and have lost 1 pound since. I like eating and drinking and for some reason have abandoned caring about exercise or nutrition since the Fest. I ran the Steelman Sprint Tri and had aches and pains that I have not felt since I weighed over 200lbs. popcorn::

My priorities for this Sunday (when I was running a mere 3 mile leg):
1. develop a make shift backpack cooler to carry beers and a special treat for EVERYONE at each transition
2. running a sub 7:30min mile 3mile leg.
I know I am partially successful with goal #1, #2 need to run it

If I compare my weight this year to last year I am exactly 20 pounds heavier :eek:but just under 200lbs.

So can I manage a 4.8 3rd leg, well hell yea, I will just have to fuel up with one less beer and maybe one more special treat(jello shots) :thumbsup2

I will attempt to run a sub 8min mile leg and will most likely need CPR and a beer when I complete it, if anyone happens to bring bacon or hot and garlic wings, I would really appreciate it.

Who else has been training as well as me????

The best way that I have found to solve the weight issue is to drop your scale out of a second story window. It is amazing how much lighter you will feel in an instant ;). Copious amounts of beer and alcohol, as you have probably discovered, will also help since they diminish any weight concerns, or concerns at all. If you are planning to bring alcohol on your runs, you are well on your way to overcoming those 9 pesky pounds.

Morning everyone!

I am back on track. Got my new phone on Saturday. So excited because tracking said it was not due here until today. Got it set up right away with all my running apps and music. :lmao: Had plans on Saturday so no run. Went to a fair on Sunday, but when we got back and everyone took a rest, I went out for a 5.2 mile run! :thumbsup2 Since I had not been in 2 weeks didn't want to go crazy, but I felt like it was enough to really work me. Felt great too. I was at 10:48 average, even without my inhaler, so I was very happy. Feels good to be back in training. :cool1:

Capeseal - Ouch on the ankle pain:scared: Good luck with the new shoes and awesome to hear they are working well already.

kristenrice - Congrats on the finish! Who cares if you were in second to last place, you DID IT GIRL! :cool1: You lapped everyone on the couch. Does not matter where you finish, but that you got out and beat everyone on the couch and you did it for you! Awesome job! :thumbsup2

Just finished a short 23 minutes outside. Was trying for 30 but I got off to a late start and we need to get ready for school.

When is it going to cool down? Still unbearably hot here and I am a sweathog.

Kept a great pace, though. Sub 12:00 which hasn't happened for me in awhile. Now to keep it up more than 23 minutes at a time! :-)

I ate dinner around 5:30, got dressed and ready to go and was on the first bus to the starting line. I found the pre-race festivities a lot of fun and I even made some new friends!

Like me!! :wave2:

And like Pluto, I was literally bouncing all over the room with nervous anticipation! DH was SO glad to put me on the bus.

So was mine! :rotfl2:
Whatever you end up planning to do that day - don't forget to carry ar
ound your bottles of gatorade/powerade and water and drink a little throughout the day!

Absolutely!

This year we are at WL so I don't know what our options will be aside from regular race transport. (Where is the race start? HS?)

If it's the same as last year, which it probably will be, the start is at WWoS.

Am I the only one already nervous about the weather? What was W&D like last year? ToT was horrible for humidity in 2012, especially coming in from CO and running at the end of a weeklong trip. I am so hopeful that early November is a little less stifling, though I know in Florida, anything can happen.

Since I've become pretty much become immune to any humidity less than 90%, I'm definitely NOT the one to ask :goodvibes. However, that being said, last year was almost perfect. ::yes:: It was cool (mid 60's at the start I think), and little to no humidity. I WAS glad I was wearing a long sleeve tech top as we seemed to hit some really cold spots every so often. And since I'm almost ALWAYS cold, choosing to just wear a hoodie at the start and skip sweat pants over my running tights was a good decision...not too hot, not too cold. Keep in mind though, I freeze in anything under 80! :scared1: :lmao:

12 miles done! My runkeeper went wonky during my emergency pit stop so I don't know if it counted that as time or not. So one way or the other, 19k was done in 2:55! Yay!

Wow! Everyone is doing awesome ramping up their mileage! :cool1: I haven't done more than 5.5, but my knees are being very appreciative of it! :thumbsup2 Not in the least worried about the mileage and will max out at 10, 2 weeks before the race. I don't plan on PR'ing, but I'll be happy with a 2:20-2:30 finish time. Of course, that may always change come race time depending on which of you guys I end up having fun with and how many pics I end up stopping for. Pluto of course is always mandatory, but I just may stop for the Green Army guy and/or Darth Vader. :confused3

Glad to hear you're doing better! :thumbsup2

PlutoBaby You just gave me a great idea for a new poll on here. :scratchin Thanks! :thumbsup2

What is everyone doing for W&D...are you going for a PR...first race....or don't care about time and just doing it for the Disney experience?

When November finally rolls around this will be my 5th 1/2. I have done one in June, and have 3 coming up between September and October for January's marathon training (these are official races). I am NOT looking for any PR, that is what local races are for. I am all in for the experience and pictures.

What is your plan? :confused3:goodvibes

Wouldn't mind a PR, but since there's so much going on, and because I've met so many DIS'rs since last year, I'm thinking this is going to be more of a social event for me. I'll just be happy to beat my horrendous 2:48 time from last year, which I think had alot to do with not knowing what the heck I was doing! :faint:

Since I'm also doing the WDW Half in January, I may just shoot for a "Disney" PR on that one. :woohoo:

Hubby and a I both finally ran a 10k yesterday. He did great, finished in 1:09! I, on the other hand, did not. Finished in 1:20, but the temps were in the 90s and the humidity was rough as well. I am still disappointed in myself, but trying to find some positives!! I am definitely motivated to keep working thats for sure!!

Kristenrice- Wait! You don't like trails :confused3? I love running off the asphalt and concrete. Half of my regular running route takes me on dirt and gravel through a golf course. I'm pretty sure that's the only reason that my back has held out for training. I wish we could move back to the beach so that I could run on sand. Anyway, congrats on your awesome first official 10k! Amazing that you killed your goal time and wonderful that you have a time to submit to RunDisney now.

PlutoBaby- Humidity-immunity could be your super power. I'm impressed that you have been able to overcome it.

cjhinch- Those are crazy temps and I am impressed that you finished. Great job!

jpeka65844- Way to get out there, even for a shorter than planned distance. So important.

CamColt- Hope you had some great vacation time and it seems like you are in great shape for the race with training runs like that.

Way to go on the new phone and being back in training mode with a great run!

Great topic! I am just excited by the course for this race. Love Osborne lights and Epcot and we wanted to make a trip in November so this race worked out with that. It will be my first half but I have also gotten roped into running Princess in February. After that, I don't know that I'll do more half marathons. Maybe if another awesome one came up, but I'm more motivated to keep running the 10k distance and have 2 of those planned for next spring. Longest course previously was ToT 10-miles and other than that, I have run a handful of 5k and 10k's. I do want to finish in under 2:30 or, ambitiously (for me), 2:15 but mainly to have more time enjoy the party after. I'm looking forward to an interesting course and the fun, festive atmosphere.

I just noticed my calendar....

Two Months (and less than twelve hours, to be precise...)

Hey all! I know W&D is sold out, but does anyone know if there are travel companies or charities that still have registration? A week after swearing she'd never run again, my bestie just texted me & said she wants to do W&D.

If not, I guess there's always next year...

I'm not certain yet if I'm going to stop for pics. Last year, I stopped for one and I sort of regretted it. Or rather, I regretted not paying as much attention to my pace before and after stopping to make up for it. Basically I am glad I stopped becuase my son was so happy, but at the same time, I really wish I was happier with my finish time so that I wouldn't be stressing out so much about doing a Proof of Time 10k for the Princess in February. So it sort of depends on the 10k that I do in a few weeks. If that goes well, then I'll definitely stop for a picture or two. If not, I'll probably just run through and get my pictures the next day wearing my medal and not looking like a sweaty mess!

As for me - did my planned 8-miler last night. I was actually fairly pleased with it because 1) I managed to do it at a better pace than I did last year during W&D training and more importantly 2) I didn't feel like I was going to die/puke/pass out after. I have definitely learned a lot about my running in the last year. Pre-run powerade + clif shot bloks on the hour + try to run in lower humidity = a successful long run for me. Only snafu was that my ipod battery died at mile 5.5. I was not a happy camper. But I surprised myself and was able to maintain my pace (even managed an intentional negative split) and finish without too much misery.

Next up for me: a nice easy recovery 3 tuesday, hills on thursday, a speedwork saturday, hills next monday, easy on wed and 9 miles on saturday. Then its a few easier runs before the 10k.... :thumbsup2

This will be my first 1/2 so an automatic PR! I'd like to get a couple fun pics but once I start on a run I'm not real good at stopping then starting again. I'm hoping some photo ops happen during a walk interval :)

Yeah, I have trouble getting going again too. I may walk a little at the later water stops, if I am fumbling to get a good drink of water into me, but if I stop and get in line for a picture, I am afraid I'll have trouble getting going again. It is a better strategy for me to run right through.

Ah! A dead ipod battery would really bum me out. Great job getting through your planned run and for finding a formula that works for you. I have found that my formula is "don't stop running." If I slow to a walk or stop, I have a terrible time picking it up again.
