The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Still sore and hobbling around though better off then I was a couple of days ago. Hoping this soreness will go away soon so I can at least resume light training soon. Because right now I am just walking funny so the furthest I have gone was walk from the DLH to the park and back and that was only because the monorail elevator was broke down and neither my friend or I really wanted to do the stairs at the moment.

Left ankle's holding out fine so the PT back in spring worked wonders. Though apparently now I have to strength train my other ankle (I worked both ankles at the time of the PT its just my right deciding to be troublesome right now). Because for some reason my right ankle is being funny. Not overly bad or anything other than being a jolty when I stand up after sitting down for some time. No clue why, I never injured the darn thing. :confused3

At least one thing went right this morning. They sent the information off to the insurance for approval for the surgery. Or they were supposed too at least.

Went to PT instead of running this morning. I was so excited to tell her about my back not hurting but then she managed to find the spots where I was storing up the pain and... ouch!!! Anyway, ready to run tomorrow morning. Also, the ankle pain I am having probably isn't shoe related but arthritis. Yuck! I need to trade up to a new model because my body is on an accelerated aging schedule, it seems.

New album I've been wanting came out today so I have a couple of new tunes to look forward to on the running mix in the morning.

Oh my goodness, Diana, I hope everything is okay. Love that you had a spontaneously fun parenting moment but so sad that you ended up sacrificing your phone. I hope you can get a new one soon. I would find it very difficult to run without tracking either. Could you still do a tried and tested route with a watch as a poor substitute? I have a reliable 5k route that I would run if I was in that situation. Though it would break my heart not to hear my little RunKeeper coach letting me know my pace every 1/2 mile.

Thanks for the kick in the tush. Guess I just needed someone to say that to me. I will try and do my regular 5k tomorrow that I have done around my neighborhood. At least it is something. Thanks!

Hope the PT helped, even though she found the ouchies. ;) Even if you are getting older, you get a new pair of shoes. It's a great trade off, right? :lmao: Enjoy your new running mix.

1. Gatorade/Powerade. Before, during, after. I used to feel sick a LOT after hot runs and now I reach for the powerade immediately and it definitely helps.

2. Cut the run short. Seriously, I have had 2 of these training runs this summer b/c I timed them poorly (mid-day), or the weather was just not what I expected. When slowing down and drinking water/sports drink and taking walk breaks does not help enough, sometimes you just have to stop.

Good luck not freaking out about your knee. :grouphug: You'll be fine! just keep building slowly.

PS - I should take some of my own advice. I'm trying not to freak out about how my knee is going to handle my 10k on Sept 29. Now that it's only 26 days away, I'm really getting nervous! I've never done a 10k. I wouldn't have done this one either so close to W&D but I really want to move up corrals.

Thanks! :goodvibes On the recommendations of a couple of blogging runners, I got some NUUN Hydration tablets. Forgot I had them in the pantry so I'm going to give those a shot as well. Unfortunately, the only thing I had in the fridge Monday other than water and Propel was the DH's nasty tasting Vitamin Water and some kind of blue Gatorade. Will have to try some Powerade too. :thumbsup2 And no worries on the corrals! At the very least you'll be able to start in the same one as last year. What was it? C? At least you weren't in G! :faint: Talk about feeling like you were waiting FOREVER to get the show on the road! :rolleyes2

Hijacking a second --- are you running THE GREAT RACE on 9/29? If so - I'll see you there! :cool1::thumbsup2 !!!!!!

Can't believe how fast the time is going.
August has been rough in terms of training for me. DD had a minor surgery coupled with a pretty yucky cold/flu . And adjusting back into school has just kept me off the roads. I need to get back where I was in my training. I will hit double digits this weekend or next!

I did not want to run this morning. At. All. DS was up for 2 hours last night for no particular reason but kept wandering into our room and wanting to snuggle. I'm a pretty big hippie when it comes to parenting but I just can't sleep with my kids in the bed, I need to spread out like a starfish. The alarm went off and I told DH I wasn't going but somehow found myself lacing up sneakers 15 minutes later. I did slack off with 3.5 miles instead of 4-5 but at least I went out there. The disappointing thing is that my children are still asleep at almost 8 and I am thinking of how sweet it would have been to lie in bed with cats watching some morning program. Oh well, at least I get to drink my coffee uninterrupted. Hope everyone has a great Wednesday!

Good luck getting a great time so that you can place in an earlier corral. You will rock that 10k thanks to all of the half training! I still need to sign up for a run to improve my placement. Looks like I may go down to the wire with my procrastination.

If you are about to hit double digits, it sounds like you are doing great!! Sorry your DD has had some health setbacks and hoping that you all stay healthy in the fall.

I wasn't trying to kick!...too hard ;). I just have to give extra encouragement to New England runners who power through the summer humidity not to lose focus over a phone . (I'm originally from New England, displaced by the Air Force, but that is home.) When I was back there in June, I found some days were absolutely unbearable for running no matter when I started out so I am unbelievably impressed that you have trained through it.

Yep! :thumbsup2 Great Race here I come! I've only run one other race in this town of monstrous hills, and that was the 5k during marathon weekend which is flat flat flat. I hear the great race is "mostly downhill" but I've seen the course elevation chart and that's not ALL downhill... I am hoping for some awesome weather though. No freakishly hot or pouring rain PLEASE! Have you done this race before? Is it really "great?" :)

I was in E, which is fine with me actually. I'm not really too worried about Corrals for W&D. I'm actually more concerned about the Princess Half. In case of a "heatwave," I'd really like to get on the course as soon as possible to have more time before the sun comes up. I'm running the GSC that weekend too, so just in case that goes badly :rolleyes1... any extra buffer time would be great!

Agreed, I wanna see pictures of this year's medal!

Hi everyone! Just popping in for waves and hugs and offers of encouragement. It's coming up fast on us!

I have committed to a 60 day focused program of running and weights to be 'ready' for the run. Trying to stick with 6 miles every other day for this 4 weeks and then up it to 10. Elliptical and weights are the off days.

So far I am doing pretty well. I am debating new running shoes and should probably move on those so they aren't 'new' come race day.

So happy everyone is doing well, and hugs to those who are struggling. We can do this!

- Carey :)

So I am running a Mary Relay this Sunday.
OMG....I check email tonight and see this:
John, you are moving to a 4.8 the 3rd leg for your team. You think you can manage???????

Let me summarize my last few weeks of training....
I gained 10 pounds at Musikfest and have lost 1 pound since. I like eating and drinking and for some reason have abandoned caring about exercise or nutrition since the Fest. I ran the Steelman Sprint Tri and had aches and pains that I have not felt since I weighed over 200lbs. popcorn::

My priorities for this Sunday (when I was running a mere 3 mile leg):
1. develop a make shift backpack cooler to carry beers and a special treat for EVERYONE at each transition
2. running a sub 7:30min mile 3mile leg.
I know I am partially successful with goal #1, #2 need to run it

If I compare my weight this year to last year I am exactly 20 pounds heavier :eek:but just under 200lbs.

So can I manage a 4.8 3rd leg, well hell yea, I will just have to fuel up with one less beer and maybe one more special treat(jello shots) :thumbsup2

I will attempt to run a sub 8min mile leg and will most likely need CPR and a beer when I complete it, if anyone happens to bring bacon or hot and garlic wings, I would really appreciate it.

Who else has been training as well as me????

Well so much for tackling a short run today...

It is 69 degrees, there is not a cloud in the sky, the wind is a nice, gentle 6mph and the humidity is a mere 34%...how could I possibly go three miles???

I went 6.2:rotfl:. It was gorgeous outside...I couldn't resist:woohoo:. I thought I was taking it easy and I stuck to the 8/4 intervals. I finished 6 miles in 1:12:02 which is right on pace. I walked the final 0.2 miles which brought my overall pace to 12:08 minutes. I'm fine with that:banana:.

I had a great lunch...a whole wheat tortilla with a slice of low-fat cheese, garlic and herb mayo and ham, with a side of sliced apples and whipped peanut butter:cloud9:.

I have to work tomorrow and then I have my first 10K on Saturday morning. It is my one and only shot at getting a time to submit for better corral placement so I am a little nervous. I *REALLY* want to stick to my 8/4 intervals. I have been able to stay right at the 12:00 pace for 6 miles both times that I tried it. The only worry I have is that this is an EARLY race. All of my longer distances have been run after 11am. This one is at 8:30am and it is a 1 hour drive from our house. If I can maintain that 12 minute pace, I shoule be able to finish in about 1:15:00 which puts me at, what? 2:30 for the 1/2 marathon? Is that how they calculate it? I highly doubt I will maintain 12:00 for 13 miles but the further up I can start, the less I have to worry if I have to slow down.

On another topic, I have come up with another race-day plan...

MK in the morning...we just want to check out the new Fantasyland, PotC, and Buzz Lightyear (I have to beat DH at least once in my life:lmao:). We'll probably grab breakfast at Main Street Bakery (Starbucks...do they accept Starbucks gift cards???)

From MK, we'll head over to the Expo and get our bibs. We will have to make it a quick trip because I want to be back at the AKV by 1pm. Then, it is nap time:cloud9:. I want to leave the resort by 5pm and head to Epcot. We'll walk through Epcot (no attractions) and head to the Dolphin for dinner. I'm thinking about the lasagna meal at Picabu...looks like a great carb option. After dinner (hopefully around 7), we'll head to the Boardwalk and grab the bus to the start line.

Comments? Does it sound doable??

According to the McMillan Race Calculator (which supposedly Disney uses to project finish times) a 1:15 10K translates to a 1/2 marathon time of 2:47:12 (12:46/mile). You can plug in different times to see the projections: https://www.mcmillanrunning.com/

Starbucks...do they accept Starbucks gift cards???

They accept gift cards and you earn stars for rewards, but you cannot redeem rewards there.

First off good luck on your race tomorrow! As far as training schedules go, some may say to stick to them no matter what, but I am one that does change it up a bit. If you are having a great run, then I don't think it is a problem to switch it out with another day of the week to run longer.

Now to your race day plans. If you are wanting to have a great time, that sounds like it may be a bit more walking than you will want to do. I know that it is not out of the question, as I have done the 5k and parks the morning of the race. I'm just not sure what your wish is as far as a personal time for the race.

Lastly, I personally think that the dinner is too close to race time. This is a personal choice so I am just giving you the plan that I have come to from running all the previous W&D races. I eat my large meal between noon and 1. I will then go back and try to take a nap, but a least rest until about 5. Then I eat something small while riding over to the race such as a bagel and banana. I find that this better matches my schedule for a morning race. If you have run a morning race do you get up to eat a meal 5 hours before the start of the race?

Adding to the two previous answers...

The predicted 2:45 is if your 75 minute 10k is a race pace or a training pace. Many folks run the same pace in both, which would solidify the 2:45 half. Also note that the half is a little longer than double a 10k, so is you could maintain a 12 min pace for the entire half you would finish at 2:38. Sorry, being a little like an engineer here.

Also, I agree with urging caution about eating a heavy meal that close to race time. The fats and seasoning from the pasta may not taste so good about mile 4.

Thank you both for the input about my dining timing. DH wants me to keep our ADR at LeCellier (4:10pm) because he wants cheese soup and pretzel bread. I have done early morning runs (with no food before the run) and I don't do well...obviously. I have found that my best runs are in the early afternoon/evening after eating a normal diet throughout the day.

Hmmm, maybe I will go back to my plan of making my pasta salad in the room and eating that before we leave. I cook up a box of pasta (I prefer the bowties) and mix it a can (or 2) of tuna, a can of peas, and Fat-Free Miracle Whip to hold it all together. It's delicious hot or cold. My mom used to make a whole batch of it for me back in high school when we had our all-day softball tournaments and it got me through a lot of long days. Since we are in a studio and all of the ingredients are shelf-stable, it would be very easy to bring everything with me. I have a "pasta boat" that cooks up pasta in the microwave so I'll add that to my list.

Ugh...the dining stuff is really getting to me. I usually have a problem narrowing down my restaurant choices. Now, the only ADR's that I am absolutely set on are breakfast at Boma on our departure day (that's a tradition) and "lunch" at Sanaa at 1:30 on Sunday. I call it lunch, but since we won't be back to the resort until about 5am, it will be breakfast for us:cool2:. I just can't get myself to make any ADR's because I really have no idea how often we are going to go to the parks. We have 4-day park hoppers but I am not even sure we will go to the parks for 4 days. Good grief:sad2:...I just want to "wing it", but I know that is not usually conducive to a smooth trip when you are talking about Disney:scared:.

The weekend of the W&D is one that I do not over schedule meals. There are so many great items in the world showcase that you can easily substitute for any lunch or dinner. I usually have a dinner on Friday night and a past lunch on Saturday. Sunday is food and wine items from the world showcase.

Don't worry if you don't have meals planned out like normal. As far as you meal before the race, do what is good for you. Don't change it up because others have different plans. I also love that tuna pasta casserole and had it often as a kid.

Every time we talk pre-race dining on this thread, I am reminded of the episode of The Office (the American version) where they do the charity 5k for rabies and Michael Scott downs the Fettuccine Alfredo before starting because he needs to "carbo-load." :rotfl:

OK...now you're making me want to hit the Olive Garden tonight for their endless pasta bowl:thumbsup2...
