The not so live version of dining w/ Disers, in Castles & on Safari! The Wrap! 2/26

Friday August 23, 2013: Shula's Steakhouse Dinner

This non-Disney restaurant was selected due to so many Disers declaring Shula’s the best steakhouse around. We had a few Signature restaurants booked consecutively so I wasn’t sure we wanted to keep this ADR. However, we obviously did since here I am to share our dining experience.

We had walked (in heels across the boardwalk planks, try that without getting your heel stuck in a crack or two) from the Yacht Club next door to the Dolphin Hotel. The irony of this restaurant that is owned by Don Shula being located in the Dolphin hotel was not lost on me!

Once checked in, the hostess seated us in a back room where she left us with the Don Shula autographed football on our table. The temptation to tell Em to go long for a pass was overwhelming but I kept myself in check. (Although when I asked the server if many people tossed the ball around he responded that many a stem-wear had been broken by patrons recreating their favorite football moments.)

We were introduced to our wait team that consisted of Mario and John and then there was an assistant who provide the water and attended to cutlery or napkin needs. Seriously, there was a larger wait team than our simple little party of two!

We were presented with “real” menus; however, I had stalked the dining boards enough to know that I was going to request an off-menu item.

Drink orders were taken, a glass of Justin something, a cab, from Paso Robles for me and a bottle of blackberry sage tea for Em. We both apparently were pleased with our choices because not only did we drink them all but we took a lot of photos of them!

Cheers to a great day!

Insert a huge happy face here because the next action brought a reaction. We were presented with a basket of hot, fresh, fabulous sourdough bread with ROOM TEMPERATURE butter. Yeah, someone knows how to do that right! No tearing the bread/roll with cold butter here. This was soooo delicious. Em agreed that this was the best in like forever!

And a couple familiar faces...
DSCN7418.jpg

What high end steakhouse would be worthy of that title without having a rolling meat cart? Look what’s rolling our way! The meat trolly was wheeled over to the table to help us understand the difference between a Rib eye and a NY Strip. I rather think the meat cart is analogous to the dessert cart for extreme carnivores. I’m not sure I retained all that meat knowledge he threw my way but I did heft a 48 oz Porterhouse and was quite impressed that anyone would venture to eat that much in one sitting.

I commented to our server that it was so dark in the restaurant that they needed to deliver flashlights with the menus. He proceeded to pull out a mini flashlight and hand it to me. Hey, they think of everything!

Finally decided, Em chose the 16 oz NY Strip steak and I went with the off menu choice of the 8 oz filet. (This is the size filet that is served with the surf and turf.) We also ordered a side of roasted garlic mashed potatoes to share. While placing our orders the server noted that there was at least one dessert that had to be ordered in advance since it took 25 minutes to bake – the molten chocolate lava cake. Em fell for that suggestive sell!

When our steaks were delivered, the server had us cut into them to confirm that they were cooked to our liking. Mine was medium rare – yep, definitely cooked perfectly. Em’s the same.

My notes from the meal say the following, “amazing, buttery-tender, perfectly seasoned, delicious sauce bernaise, just magnificent.” Ok, so I take it that I really dug this steak. Seriously, I haven’t eaten a whole steak in forever and I polished this hunk of meat off quickly! The mashed potatoes were good, not amazing, but they may have scored higher if they were served piping hot and not simply warm. I suppose not everything could be amazing so if there had to be something that was less than stellar, mashed potatoes were fine.

In due time, the chocolate lava cake was delivered with a side of crème anglaise. I didn’t expect the waiter to dig his paws into the dessert and deconstruct this so I caught his hand in the photo. However, it must be their thing to mess with the food so after making a crater in the cake he poured the crème anglaise in the middle.

This exuded such a rich chocolate smell that I think the entire room was enveloped in the scent of chocolate lava cake. Em adored this dessert. It may shock you for me to say that I actually tried one bite… however, it probably won’t shock you if I say that I didn’t like it – at all. It was too rich and wayyyy toooo chocolaty.

Shula’s accepts TiW, with our discount applied we saved $25.39.

My hubby would love to dine here as much for the steak as for the vintage football décor. I mentioned that and our server insisted that we pose for a photo in front of the wall mural size photo of Shula’s 1972 perfect season victory photo.

This was definitely the best dinner that we had the entire trip. Since this is not technically a Signature restaurant by Disney I can’t say it is my new favorite Signature restaurant – but it would be if it was! We look forward to returning in December since I’ve been practicing my spiral throwing technique.

Edited to note: This is a Signature restaurant, they just don't accept TiW. Thanks Paula (Smile4Stamps)!

Thanks for the DLR dining tips! :thumbsup2

I loved reading about Shula's! I don't know when I last saw a review of this place, and it sounds divine!

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed Shula's. I think I will book it for May. And actually.. If you go to the Disney Dining website it is listed as a Signature Restaurant (it just doesn't take DDP)

We've had the mashed potatoes as part of the F&W classic and I can tell you those ones that we've had have been awesome!

Wow, what a great review. We dined at Shula's years ago and loved it. After reading your review I'm ready to head back. That steak looked fantastic.

I'm glad you asked. Yes, the book is out. You can click here for a link to read about and/or purchase the book.

Thank you!!! :goodvibes Time for me to buy myself yet another present a month before Christmas! Because why not, ya know? Hehe.

Cold butter in restaurants is SUCH a huge pet peeve of mine. I mean, really... you take the time to bake the delicious homemade bread and then ruin it by serving butter that's hard as a rock? Illogical.

As a Buffalo Bills fan :cheer2: I may not be allowed in Shula's. *grin* I love the memorabilia. I'm such a sucker for that kind of stuff!! Glad you guys had such a good meal!!! I'm now craving chocolate lava cake.

The steak and the lava cake look amazing! I wish this restaurant was on the dining plan since that's what my family usually does :/ But you have convinced me to try to convince them to deviate from the norm! :goodvibes

You bet Roni! I was glad to find a few dining reviews of Shula's but mostly you just see the threads that ask which is better - Shula's or ___?

We'll see if it was a one hit wonder when we return in a couple weeks.

Thanks for clarifying the Signature status Paula. I edited my post to indicate as such.

I think you may just like this place and not just for the mashed potatoes. :) It was obviously our favorite this trip so I'm excited to go back.

Thanks Ron! It is hard to take photos in the dark restaurant that do the food justice. However, being first timers for this place it lived up to the high expectations that we had. :)

No problem khaleesi, thanks for your interest in the book, it has some great stories.

Exactly!!! Cold butter, room temp bread = torn up bread pieces with clumps of cold butter. No good I tell ya!

Ha ha! You definitely know you are in a Miami Dolphin's centric restaurant with the photos everywhere.

Glad to instill a craving in you so early in the day! ;)

Hi DisKH! Thanks for reading and commenting! :goodvibes

That's a tough one since it's not on the Dining Plan. You may have to have die hard football fans or steak lovers to get them to deviate. :) It was very good though.

Had so much fun catching up! And am now quite hungry!

Sorry to hear Jesus led you a bit astray, there. I'd have to agree that I'm not sure how a queso fundido can be too cheesy? :confused3 Thank goodness and praise the Lord indeed that the avocado margarita is still available in La Cava. Still on my "to try" list. :)

I'm in absolute violent agreement with you on the fries at The Plaza. PERFECTION.

How super cool to have gotten a tour of the Dream Suite. Can't wait to read all about it. And thanks for the mention of the book. I added it to my list! :thumbsup2

I have been meaning to try Shula's and now I most surely will. You had me at room temp butter. :rotfl: But it all looks delicious and I will keep that 8oz off book filet in mind! And the lava cake... :)

DH and I ate at Shula's once a couple years ago. It was fantastic :thumbsup2
I love seafood though so when we make it over to the Dolphin I usually opt for Bluezoo

... and yes I will be joining the Dis Meet team. I am very much looking forward to meeting with everyone

I'm glad you and Em enjoyed your meal at Shula's. We've not done the one at Disney. But we were fortunate to go to one here in Chicago when friends of ours took Mark and I for his 60th birthday. THE BEST steak we have ever had...the service and food was outstanding. I had that Chocolate Lava cake when we went and I was in a coma for a day...but so, so worth it.

The pictures of you and Em are lovely...as always.

Oh my goodness, that looks so good! I can't eat much fat due to pancreatitis, but someday, I when I get this sorted out, I declared today, as I was staring at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, my first indulgent meal will be a high quality steak dinner. Yum!

That place looks very classy & yummy! Why is it empty?! The waiters are equipped with mini flashlights! The whole football thing doesn't really appeal to me, but I definitely appreciate a mini menu on the pigskin.

You guys look so cute! Don't tell Rich but I think I'm gonna need new outfits for my next visit!! :)

OMG. I can't believe your good luck with knowing people in Disney! :thumbsup2 I LOVE the Plaza for lunch! It's so yummy! The Chocolate milkshakes are AMAZING!

As I was reading this about Shula's I said something to my husband and he told me ALL about it. WHAT?!? :confused3 He acted like I was dumb for not knowing about this place. Well… EXCUSE me Mister. Would you like plan the next trip?

As always another GREAT dining report!! I would love to try club level one of these trips.. you and Em make it look so great! And your reviews are always so fun to read. I am very tempted by Shula's - maybe DH and I can swing a couples-night there or even bring the girls next week… they love steak and lava cake too!

Keep the great reviews coming!

Mmmmm that filet looks delicious!! I love the Swalphin restaurants!

It was awesome Kylie! I'm spoiled for filets now. Darn!

Had so much fun catching up! And am now quite hungry!

Exactly Christine! Agreed, how can "queso" fundido be too cheesy?? Let me know when you try that avocado margarita if you shout out an amen! At that point in my Disney trip I hadn't tried it yet.

I will say amen to those Plaza Restaurant fries. :woohoo:

Awww thanks! Seriously, I will get to the part about the Dream Suite. I can't help it that he didn't surprise us until day 8! ;)

That lava cake looks amazing!!!

I can only say that the one bite I had confirmed that indeed it is verrrryyy chocolaty!

The next time I'm at Bluezoo it will be for cocktails! ;) We'll toast to new Dis friends! :)

Hi Kathy! You are very lucky that you have a Shula's nearby. Michael would love that place but the closest location for us is in AZ. Bummer. I'm glad you guys had a fabulous experience!

Awww thanks!

I understand that pancreatitis is very painful. Ouch.

Sounds like a reward meal at Ruth's Chris is definitely in order. :)

Very classy indeed! We did feel the need to shower before we dined there. :rolleyes1

There are several rooms in the restaurant and we were seated in the back room - not sure what they were trying to tell us but it's where we landed. there were only two other tables occupied in our room at first. I was told that their busy season is football season, Spring Break, and some convention for football when you can't get a table.

Thanks Jennifer! I definitely won't tell Rich. In fact, I fully support it.

Speaking of outfits... Does that dress on Em look familiar? I did borrow her little frock for our dinner. :upsidedow

Food looks so good, I have to say I love lava cake! :dance3: but I love chocolate!!

It truly was! Yum! And I'm not talking about the lava cake.

I'm certain Plaza Restaurant does anything with ice cream fabulously! If I was a chocolate or an ice cream fan I'd think about that amazing milkshake. :p

Any man may know about Shula's because it has meat and football. I don't think they should expect us to have the same knowledge. Tell Corey that I didn't know what Shula's was until a year ago.

Oops! Posted at almost the same time!

Why thank you nickymaria! So very kind of you to say. You are more than welcome to hang around here and post more kind comments as much as you want!! :lmao:

Shula's had the BEST steak of the trip. We'll be back. :) Let me know what you think if you try it!

Great updates and pics.

Shula's looked so good, maybe one day.
