I just can't get it to give me reasonable routs. To many thing where I go from train to bus in 5 minutes. Or arrive at 3 am.

Salt Lake City. So I take the California Zephyr to Sacromento at the least.

I'd like to do the Surf Liner during the day along the coast.

It never works. I'm not sure why. But i have a theory.

Somehow the CA government supports the trains that are soley in California. While the train from Utah is purely federal. So I wonder if you try to book to Anaheim, since that requires the Surfliner which is only in California, it doesn't mix the two systems because the payment would need to be split up.

Or you could travel from SLC to SAC then from there to ANA. See if that might work for what you have in mind. It does work in planning theory. I just checked it out.

That is how I do it. Multycity. I just have to do a price comparison to see that it isn't a rip off for me to do.

To the best of my knowledge, all of the bus connections are listed on line. Otherwise, one can always ask one of the Amtrak Representatives for that answer. I know that if you miss the last train of the night, you better be near a Dennys!

I know that if you miss the last train of the night, you better be near a Dennys!

That is percisely my concern. If I miss the zephyr back to Utah, I wait until the one the next day. And I want to ride along the coast during daylight.

I would definitely call Amtrak and ask about your concerns, or send them an email. I would call instead, easier and much faster I would imagine. I have called before, but not sent an email to them. There can actually be a hold time on the phone.
