The Most Expensive Free Trip Ever - TR Link is Up! Pg. 164

Avalanches off a building?? That's some sort of snowfall! How would you tell your kids that grandma just died from falling snow walking to bridge club??

the poles are for avalanche prevention? I was sure it was for austrian pole dancers.....

How exactly does the pole help with things falling from the roof?

Avalanches!! Oh my!! There would be no escape in those little alleys!!
One of your tour pictures looks like you are super tall from your picture vantage point! :lmao:
Amazing steeple on the cathedral :thumbsup2

Avalanche from the roof?:confused3 Wonder how a stick helps that.

Love the pics from your tour.

I think they are pulled across the alley during times of high danger- sort of like a do not enter warning. They help you by asking you to stay out. Am I right, Glenn??

Hey Glenn :wave2: Catching up after my 'sick' week. Great updates - gorgeous pictures! I can't believe you were taking pictures of food before you found the Dis - I would have never thought to do that!

A little night music - Eine Kleine Nachtmuzik, right? The only reason I would even know that is because of this musical toy the girls had when they were little. It had 5 or 6 cubes that you stuck in cube shaped holes, and when pressed, each one played a different segment of Night Music, so you could put them in whatever order you wanted. Also, each side of the cube played a different instrument, so you could flip them around and get all kinds of different variations. It was a very cool toy. But I wish I could have said I knew it because I know classical music really well, instead of that I learned it from a toy!

This looks like such an interesting trip! popcorn::

Thanks tinkgurl! :goodvibes

That's what I was trying to explain to my sis while she was crying her eyes out when we were watching Amadeus, "it's just fantasy"! :rotfl:

We talked before that that's my favorite movie, but yes, it contained a few misconceptions.

I'm going to follow Jordan's lead on this one -- no comment!

Well it's good to see that I wasn't the only one confused by this. I was afraid you guys would say, "well of course...what a dumb question that was glennbo".

Yes, Liesa nailed it. The poles don't exactly prevent an "avalanche from the roof", but if there is snow/ice on the roof someone would pull the pole out away from the building so you have to walk out around the area of danger.

Glad you're computer's all better! Yes  I took pictures of food before I found the DIS. :rotfl2: And they're some of my favorite pictures....for a while that picture of my coffee in Theater an der Wein was my computer desktop picture.

Props to you Rebecca! That counts. That sounds like a cool toy. I never saw that when my kids were that age or I probably would have had to get one.

Eine Kleine makes an interesting appearance in "Amadeus" if you've ever seen it. Towards the beginning, Salieri is giving his confession to a priest and he plays samples on the piano of some of his more famous compositions. The priest doesn't recognize any of them. Then, with one finger, he plays 9 notes of Eine Kleine and the priest goes, "Oh yes, I know that one. That's delightful. I didn't know you wrote that!" Salieri says, "I didn't. That was Mozart!" (Can you tell I love that movie?)

OK, that does it! I'm having coffee with my friend (YOU) right now. Brewing some decaf as we speak. MMMmmm! In fact, I"m going in deep- doing me up some frothed milk and nutmeg too. :surfweb::cloud9:

AACK we had coffee together and I didn't even know it!

How remiss of me. I must reschedule.

Not to get ahead of myself, but further along in this flashback TR I went back to that shop and I wrote that it wasn't as good as the day before! Maybe too much anticipation / high expectations.

That's the thing about perfect moments.. hard to live up to on a redo

I love that scene!

I need to rent that, it's been a long time.

I only got it because we are very used to security gates and "forbidden areas" over here. They look the same all over the world I guess. :confused3

So true. And sometimes you don't recognize them for what they are when they happen.

You should!

That's probably the case. Verboten!

I've never seen Amadeus...........I'll have to add it to my netflix list.

Then we took the U-bahn back to our hotel to change for dinner, and the U-bahn again to a stop near our restaurant, Gasthaus Ubl.

It was all local Viennese at Gasthaus Ubl, and another dog, sitting with a crusty old guy who kind of looked like the actor, Richard Harris.

Anyway, to start, Judy had a zucchini soup and I had frittatensuppe, which is a broth with noodles that are actually cut up strips of pancake, with herbs in them. It was good. For our entrees, Judy had lamb with white beans. They were in a kind of spicy sauce which was right up her alley. I had tafelspitz, boiled beef. It was served with an applesauce/horseradish mixture that was awesome with the meat. You wouldn’t think of pairing them, but it was great. And, it was served with some fried potatoes, which I love.

Afterward, we decided to try to find a café, Café Demel, for dessert, since they’re known for their pastries, but I had a feeling they might be closed, since the café’s don’t stay open too late in Vienna.

We took the U-bahn to the Rathaus (City Hall) stop and walked toward Stephensdom, taking night-time pictures along the way. I took pictures of the Rathaus, Burgtheater, Hofburg Palace, Peterskirche (St. Peter’s church), and the Pestaule monument (in remembrance of the plague).

I was right; the café wasn’t open, so we took the U-bahn back to the hotel and had dessert there. Judy had cheesecake and I had a pastry called “the cardinale”. Before going up to our room we called the kids from an internet café across the street from our hotel – only .18 Euros/minute – not bad!

what a lovely evening! Cafe Demel. I can't wait to see your pictures to see if it matches my memory! I can't remember what I had other than it was chocolate...and amazing and it wasn't Sacher Torte though we did have that too. Surreal amazing.

We never made it to Cafe Demel. It was closed that night (all the cafes closed early, mid-afternoon maybe?) and we never got there. Something for the next trip, I guess!

Absolutely! Wonderful coffee, I remember that much. I just saw there is one in NY!

First the ballerina, then it's the men's turn to go all R Rated. All in the name of art though, so all's good. What is with "naked art"? I just don't get it. Perfect Rennaissance proportions, blah, blah, blah. Whatever... naked is naked.

I'm thinking we need to take a couple of days in Germany/Austria on our way home- it will be our last trip for a while overseas. These pictures are totally making me want to see more of the cities.

Those meals looked so yummy! Were the beers good that you ordered with it?

Bummer about your cafe being closed! a long trip on the train for nothing.
