The look of the Teenage Boy

I loved guys with long hair when I was younger. That doesnt bother me at all. It is the winged, feathered look that drives me crazy! It is not a good hair style for anyone!

That's what the teen boys wore as I recollect back in the mid-late 1980s and even a bit into the early 90s.

I read your post and LOL'd. About as funny as seeing the teen girls dress like madonna back then.

I was never a fan of "feathers".

DS14 wasn't happy with the skinniest boys jeans he could fit into. He said they stretched out too much while he was wearing them and weren't tight enough so he bought girls jeans.

When I asked him how he knew what size he was, he said he asked the girl in the store what size she thought he was and he tried them on and they fit. (I guess she's had other boys come into the store for girls jeans, too.)

He's currently wearing a girls size 3 but it takes him forever to get them on and off because he has these huge feet he needs to fit through these skinny little pants!

I agree, though. I much prefer the skinny jeans to the baggy styles.

I asked both my girls who are in their 20's if it's me or is this "look" cute? They both agreed not attractive in the least. I realize every generation has it's unique style but this is one I am not feeling.

In what decade were you a teen? I prefer the longer hair over the Flock of Seagulls look from my highschool years. My son had long hair in middle school, but now, in highschool, prefers his hair very short. He also does not like the skinny jeans (because he finds them uncomfortable), but his tshirts are fitted. He looks very nice. What would you like to see? Baggy jeans and flannel shirts?

My son definitely isn't into the "scene" style, then. I wonder what he'd be classified as? He wears either jeans or khakis, a lot of button downs, some hoodies and t's.

The dress of boys has changed alot. I don't have a son but I sure don't like the look I see. Skinny jeans, tight t-shirts, and long winged hair. What happened to boys looking like boys? Sometimes I can't tell who is a boy and who is a girl. That also makes me think of the long hair they have. What is up with that? Do they really think it looks good? All I think it would do is cause more breakouts. I guess I'm getting old.

that sounds an awful lot like what teenage guys wore back when i was a kid in the late 1970s and early 1980s. man, i hope that stuff isn't coming back in style!

How old are you? I am 44. When I was in HS guys had very long hair and looked like bums or 'hot' depending on who they were.

I'm 53 and I can vouch for that. All my guy friends had hair down to their shoulders and they all wore tight jeans. My DH was quite the hippy, even had a cow-hide vest.

I'd much rather see boys wearing tight jeans and styled hair than the ever so popular "gangsta thug" dress that we see around here. You know, pants falling off, underwear hanging out, hand on their crotch to keep the pants up, gigantic polo shirts down to their knees, short mohawks, tons of bling. Bleah. One thing about it, they can't run you down.

My son is 9, but hubby is a high school teacher so I see a lot of kids at the football games, etc... I hope this look is out by the time my son gets to that age... UGH, I think they all look soooo bad. I hope the flat top comes back in style by then.

Personally I can't stand tight jeans on guys. It looks ridiculous and there are some guys who wear them so tight you could see their "package" if you looked. I don't, but I know 15-16 year old girls who do. What happened to relaxed fit jeans and teeshirts? That was what was popular when I was in high school. My DH can't stand these emo boygirls either. I think its wrong when guys wear tighter pants than I do.

Mystery Machine, thanks for the link. I had no idea DD was actually rocking a "scene" look. Never heard of it before but she fits most of the list. I must pay more attention...

Half my friends dress like this, and I didn't know what it was called.

I'm indifferent to the look, except for the hair. I have a lot of guy friends who had awesome natural waves, and then they started flat ironing their hair to get the wind swept look.

Around here that's the middle school style- the tight jeans ect. The high school is more relaxed jeans sweatshirts kind of place thankfully.

Plus someone needs to alert the boys that this is for the THIN boys not the chubby ones. Seeing a big boy with skinny jean legs is just wrong.

And OP, if you are waiting for teenage boys to all look like they are in the military, with uniform looks and short, neat hair. You are going to be waiting for a long, LONG time. It will never happen. Never has, never will.

I vastly prefer the look of today's boys to those of the 60s and 70s. And they 80s were just ridiculous (although I didn't think so at the time!) LOL!

LOL, well, luckily the boys in my DD's high school are wearing skinny jeans all the way up (think like the Jonas Brothers) and not the other which were hugely baggie (usually 2 sizes too big) all the way down.

And, can we all just promise to never speak of the fashion in the 80s again? We just found some photos from back then and I'm thinking we should just burn them and pretend it didn't happen!

DBF and I watched Major League last night and we were just cracking up at those clothes.....we all thought we looked so good too. I just Thank God daily that I did not do the big hair.....LOL

I don't mind the tight jeans and fitted tees on guys, I do mind the thug look where your pants are down around your ankles and your boxers are out for everyone to see. That's just lame. LOL I also don't like the second skin tight jeans on guys, they should be tight enough to stay up and not fall off and that's about it. DBF wears jeans, mostly relaxed but when he gets all "cowboy'd up" he wears his tight Wranglers.....love it!!!!

I was shopping at Aeropostale yesterday and saw the cutest guy, he was wearing an Aero fitted tee with nice fitting relaxed jeans, short hair, very clean cut and just cute. He actually helped me shop because he was the same height as my DBF, much younger but the same height, I was asking him if he would wear certain sweatshirts and shirts and sizing them on him. LOL He was such a nice guy, there shopping for his brothers for Christmas gifts but had plenty of time to spare to help me, we actually finished at the same time. LOL

Well, it's certainly not all of them. I have a 'tweener' (he's 12), and he does NOT like skinny jeans, or fitted t's. He wears regular loose fit jeans, tshirts or soccer jerseys, a hoodie or a fleeece. Then either running sneakers, indoor soccer shoes, or skate shoes.

Honestly, he looks like a miniature preppy jock which is fine. And he keeps his hair really short. #3 Buzz cut every 4-5 weeks.

Welcome to the "Scene look". Skinny jeans are really in where I live, and the scene look is too. In my opinion, some people who look "scene" are just trying something new, but others who really go all out with the whole hair thing, skinny jeans, nails, eyeliner, the whole shebang thing look okay. It kind of reminds me of that "Emo" style, but that could get people to say that "Emo" is a music genre, which it is, but it's also a "look", as well.

I'm still trying to figure out how wearing your jeans down around your ankles became a "style".

I always look at that as people tryin' to be wannabe's.

My DGS is the same way and he's 11. He's a big boy 5'2" and 115 lbs so he would look ridiculous in skinny jeans. The only difference is that he has the long hair. My DS is always threatening to cut it. I'm on DGS's side and remind my son of when his hair was so long he could chew on it. Kids are trying to wxpress themselves and this is the age to do it. I hated my DS's baggy look but I just turned away. I saw enough of his butt when he was a baby.

DS is 4'10" and <90 lbs, so he could pull off the skinny jeans look, but he really dislikes it. Just about the opposite of your DGS.

He's had the long shaggy hair, and has had the short buzz cut. He plays soccer year round, and prefers the short hair for that reason only.
