The Groovy New Pop Century FAQ Thread!

I was looking at some pics in this thread and saw people using what looked like a car but a bike - what are these vehicles? Can you rent them at Pop Century?

Thanks,
Helen

Thanks Becky - I will call to ask about getting a top room with a view of the lake and fireworks and see what happens. My husband has gout which is one of the reasons we went with the preferred - if he has a flare up walking is very challenging.

Just wondering if Disney does ever block a room for a family with a special needs kid? It is likely that any room would work but it is his first big trip and I would hate to see him having a hard time if certain noises kept bothering him.

Lil' Becky,
Yes those bike/cars (I forget what they called them) are available to rent during the day and you can ride them around pop. They rent (for a VERY high price we thought) by the half hour and hour. They did look fun, but when we were there it was so hot we'd rather dip in the pool.

Ok all of you Pop Century experts I need help. We have decided that we are going to stay at Pop for our first WDW trip. I have contacted Small World Vacations and I have a pretty good price quote. I have been given a quote for standard and preferred. My question is which do I choose? I think all in all the price diffrence is about $179.00. We will be traveling with our 2 DDs. The oldest will be 8 and the youngest will be 6. We are planning our trip from Dec 29 2005-Jan 6 2006. That way we can be there for New Years and also our 9th wedding anniversary. So I need some help deciding if I need to go standard or preferred. Thanks for all thelp. By the way this board totally rocks! I guess you can all now tell I am a child of the 80s. LOL.

Helen, We are in a similar situation as you. We have a DD7 with sensory issues. I have no idea if they will block a room for you or not. We stayed at All star Movies last month and called the hotel direct a couple days before and explained the situation with our daughter. At check-in we assigned the perfect room for her. I have no idea if we were just lucky or if they indeed do "block" rooms for families of special needs children. We were given an upper floor room without a connecting door and it was very quiet. The rooms at All star movies were quite vibrant (colour wise) but I have read that POP's rooms are much mrore subdued, so that might help also. Also, a view of the lake (vs. courtyard view) may be quieter.

Have a wonderful time.

Hi, All!

My DS6 just loves to run through the fountains. We are going to book the 60s area to be close to the action. Is there a specific building we can request to be close to the fountain?

the 70's B building was really close to it. and also close to bus stops and the main hall(and also the giant big wheel, and a few other items).

HI all you Pop experts I need your help. I just changed my ressie to Pop April 3 through 8 pref view. Used BEX ap code, total was $479. Since I'm traveling alone with my two DD's I asked for a room near transportation so we won't have to walk far at night getting off the bus. Any further sugestions? Was this a mistake?
Thanks,
Shellie

Unfortunately booking a preferred room does not guarantee you'll be near transportation. If you look at a map of the resort many of the 60's rooms are jsut as far, even further, than some 70's rooms. You might want to look at the map and reconsider paying for a prefrred building. I traveled for many yrs with young children alone and I would not book a preferred room at POP unless you want to be right near the Hippy Dippy pool - still, many of the rooms are no where near the pool. The 50's pool view would be about a 4 minute walk to the food court and bus and some 70's rooms are about the same but no pool as close.

Have a great trip!

Okay all you Pop Century people - convince me that I will enjoy my stay there. It looks fun. I'm not hugely picky. I like a nice clean room. I don't mind walks if the grounds are pretty / interesting. My girls and DH could care less were we stay as long as the pool is cool. I'm squeezing in another trip in 2005 and would like to try Pop. It sure beats the heck out of Poly prices! My major concern is getting back to hotel at night using disney transportation.

Well, we considered paying extra for the 60's area last time and we are SO happy we didn't. We LOVED the 50's. We were on the top floor, close to transportation, and it was very quiet. I think I'd like to try 70's this time because it is just as close to the transportatin and is closer to the kids pool and splash fountain area for our two little one's. I wouldn't pay the extra 179 on a preferred room, at POP as long as you aren't in the 80's or 90's section you'll be pretty close to transportation at either the 50's or 70's and don't have to spend the extra money. Also, if noise concerns you, in the 60's your by the Main pool which can be noisy. I recommend 50's for quietness.
Enjoy POP, you'll LOVE IT!

Helen: I think what you are referring to is a 'surrey'. From the WDW website it looks like your best bet would be to go the the Board Walk and rent one there. I plan to be there this weekend!! :jumping4: I'll let you know when I get back!! Can anybody else speak to the cost and ease of pedalling and steering?

I'm probably in the minority, but I think those surry bikes are a lot less fun when you are riding them than they look!!! We rented them once around the Boardwalk and once again at CSR. Maybe its just because its really stressful for me because I'm afraid we're going to hit somebody and my DS wants to go fast. Also you have to be at least 18 to be in the drivers seat, which I found kinda funny that my DS wasn't old enough to drive the bike but he could rent a mouseboat (Sea Racer) and drive one of those by himself!

Thanks, Liz! Do you remember how much they cost for 30 minutes or an hour?

At CSR the 4-seater that we rode was $20.65 for 30 min. (although we ended up getting ours free!) They didn't have a rate for an hourly rental and 30 min. is PLENTY!

I will be driving with a 5-year-old birthday girl. Where should we stay so that she can see Lady & the Tramp -- or any other Pop icon that she would recognize -- from our room and still be close to a parking lot? I don't think she'd be too interested in the bowling pins or Foosball guys -- not enough experience with those in the real world.

Sounds like requesting 4th floor is a given to reduce noise. But she will probably fall asleep on the way home from the parks each night, so I don't want to schlep her too far. (She weighs over 40% of my weight -- and I'm not super-strong.) So close to the elevator is key. But how noisy are the elevators and ice machines?

Finally, when should I request a particular building/view/etc? We already made our ressies with CRO. Can I call them back to note my requests? Or should I do it at check-in?

Lady and the Tramp icons are in the 50's section, same as the bowling pin pool, but if you'd like her to be able to see one of those icons just request a pool view in the 50's and she'll be able to see one or both! Theya re cute - have you seen the photos? If you are in building one (Lady) or 3 (Tramp) and have a pool view the bus will not be far at all. Some 70's buildings might be a tad closer to the bus, but Lady and the Tramp are darn cute. Mickey phone is in the 70's though :) I would also talk with the CM at check-in because they will do their best to help and can show you a map to help choose your room. They are terrific at POP :) Parking is very close to 50's.

Here's some great POP photos!

I just want to point something out that most folks don't realize.

If you're on an upper floor, and plan on using the elevator instead of the stairs, the furthest room away from Classic Hall is just as close to Classic Hall as the closest room. How? Because with the close room, you still need to back track to the center of the building for the elevator. It works out to be the same exact distance.

Tyler, you must be reading my mind! I was thinking the exact same thing but for the life of me could not figure out how to explain it!!

Thanks so much!
