Culinary Tour part one- Boma

After having Tea at the Grand Floridian I hopped a taxi over to the Animal Kingdom Lodge. How friggin gorgeous is this place btw?

Every time I see it I want to stay here more and more. I've heard bad to middling things about the bus service, but this is the kind of place where I could really hang out at the bar/lobby/resort and enjoy myself. I really didn't spend a lot of time at my "resort" this time (POP) because the social spaces didn't really speak to me. But I guess that's just the nice thing about staying at Disney, you can bar/lounge/resort hop all you want and at the end of the day go back to your value resort room and just sleep.

Am I the only one who wants to reenact the "Song Long, Farewell"! song every time they see an impressive staircase?

Thanks to the Dis:worship: I learned that at 4PM (or 4:30PM) every day they do a culinary tour of the Boma and Jiko restaurants. At the same time of day they also do one at Sanaa, so I'll have to get to that at some point as well. I checked in around 3:30 at the Boma booth and said I was interested in the Boma/Jiko tour. They told me to just hang out/come back at 4 when the tour would start. I had heard that usually there were about 4-6 people on these tours forebode and since the lobby was full of nary a soul I scampered off to take some photos of the lovely resort.

When it was time for the tour I returned and there were, I did you not, 24 of us waiting for the tour.:scared1: It probably had something to do with it being free-dining and the looks on the CM's faces when they greeted us showed that this was not the usual experiance. I tried to get as many pics as possible with out the crowd. It was a little hard to hear the explanation of everything any ways so I sort of gave myself a self guided tour at Boma. It was easier to hear our guide in Jiko, due to the layout, but it was hard to tell what was going on during the Boma tour. Not that our CM's weren't giving it their all. Tauno and Janeke were awesome and really tried to take care of us all.

On with the pictures!

The CM's told us a little bit about Boma and the food while they guided us along. I missed some of it, because it was hard to hear it all, but they pointed out that the restaurant is divided by African countries, the pillars are clay pots (go check my pics above, it's true!) and they took everyone down the food line to explain the buffet "pods".

We were able to try the mushroom soup on this tour. I have heard that normally you can try which ever one you want, but since there were so many of us we all got the mushroom. It was super tasty, but I would have totally prefered the mulligatawny if I was choosing. And we all got a zebra dome. Honestly handing out the spoons/bowls, soup, and zebra domes took up most of the time of the tour.

As we were getting ready to leave the drummers (bongo trio?) were setting up. They play as people are seated in the restaurant, and it's pretty cool. We then all headed over to Jiko for the second part of our tour, which I will continue in the next post...

Very nice, very nice indeed! Thank you!!!::yes::

24 people!! When I did this, it was only me! :scared1:

I have stayed at AKL twice so far and never had crappy bus service there. I think we only waited once for 20 minutes, never longer, mostly much shorter. The bus service at the Poly though!:eek:

I guess it always has something to do with luck - and sometimes I feel that people here on the DIS tend to be very impatient with the busses. I use public transport on a daily basis here in Berlin and therefore I am used to delays and such. It is just different from being able to jump in your car. So my suggestion would be to not let the busses keep you away from AKL: it is such a wonderful resort! :goodvibes

Oh - and travel times are actually pretty good: 5 min to AK, 8 min to DHS, 12 min to Epcot and 18 min to MK.

I didn't know tours of Boma and Jiko were offered! That looks so fun! Too bad you didn't get your first choice in soup!

Wow- the tour looks really neat. Can't wait to hear about Jiko. I stayed there in December of last year and didn't have issues with the buses. And yes, it is a great resort to just hang out at!

That tour sounds awesome! I wonder if I could fit it in when we are there in February...hmm...time to re-do my schedule!

Whoa! That's a lot of people for that tour! I've been contemplating trying that tour myself, maybe one of these trips we'll make it over there...

I'm so glad you're feeling better and back to your reviews!

Thanks for the AKL info. I have been thinking about it. It's kind of "removed" from everything, but still close it seems. And it's not as expensive as some other deluxe resorts. I think for the next time though I'm going to go to the Swolphin. I want to be closer to EPCOT since I spend so much time there.

The soup I got was still great though. I didn't even know about the tours until I started Disboard obsessing. The more you know...

Thanks. It is a nice resort to chill at. I didn't mind wandering while waiting for my ADR one bit and sometimes that can be soooo boring.

I managed to fit it in on a day where I flew into FL, went to two theme parks, and had 3 ADRs. You can do it!!:goodvibes

Thank you, I'm glad to be feeling better. We are out of flu shots here (in Southern CA of all places!) but I'm pretty sure my body now has an immunity to anything marginally flu related after having 3 different flus in a month period.

You know, now I'm going to feel down right lazy if I don't!

We thought about AKL for this trip, but decided on WL for the proximity to MK - my friend has never been to WDW before (not like I've been that much myself!)

I had no idea about the Boma tour; how cool! :thumbsup2 Can't wait to hear about the Jiko tour!

Denise

I'll have the Jiko up next.:goodvibes

I didn't mean to shame you into it. WL is soooo lovely. That should be great for your next trip, especially if you go to the MK tons.

Culinary Tour part two- Jiko

Part one of the tour at Boma is located at this post.

After our herd was done ransacking Boma we moved across the foyer to Jiko.

Stampede! Somebody hide Mufasa!

Our guide here was Ashley, and she had already set up the food samplings and such for us at the "cooking place", so this tour went a bit smoother than the other one. I guess it helps to be the second guide on this so that you can all your stuff together.

DSCN1438.jpg

The rings around the pillars are representative of the neck rings that women wear in some African tribes. (Sorry, I forget specifically which ones she said.) A woman will have more rings depending on her social status and age.

DSCN1466.jpg

And those things on the ceiling that look like birds are supposed to be... birds! Go figure, eh?

DSCN1460.jpg

And throughout the evening the lights on the back wall change colors, to mimic the sunset.

DSCN1467.jpg

The cooking place is a counter where you can sit for your meal, as I did later that evening. It's really interesting to watch all the flat breads being cooked and the other appetizers being prepared. It smells amazing.

DSCN1469.jpg

Ashley had prepared some tasty treats for us and we also got a menu to keep. Hello scrapbook!

DSCN1468.jpg

The appetizer that was left for us to try was the Taste of Africa. Kalamata olive hummus, Durban Tikka Masala, and Malay spinach-lentil dip. It comes with Lentil papadam, whole wheal lavosh, and Flax seed Naan bread. It was so tasty. The Durban Tikka Masala was a bit more spicy than the others, but it was all great to me.

DSCN1470.jpg

So the tour was interesting, but I'd like to do it again without 20 of my closest friends.:rotfl: The most difficult part of the tour was Boma, because it was hard to hear what was going on. Something about the acoustics in Jiko made it easier to hear.

Both restaurants are beautiful and I equally enjoyed the treats they gave us. I would recommend the Culinary Tour to anyone, you learn stuff and get free samples! Just show up at the Boma counter before 4PM, that's all you have to do.

Next up: a brief boozy respite at Victoria Falls, followed by dinner at Jiko... as if you need to see any more pictures of there after this.

And thanks again everyone for baring with me during my illness induced absence. It's good to be back Dis-ing. Don't forget to get your flu shots!

Glad you're feeling better Laura!

Loving your reviews so far. I've never done the Boma/Jiko tour but might have to check that out on my next trip as I'll be staying there again.

I just stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge (Kidani Village) in October and I thought the bus service was fine. I can only remember a long wait for a bus once but otherwise the service was pretty good and it's really not too far to the parks. It is a nice relaxing getaway and you can't beat the savanna views!

Looking forward to your Jiko review:thumbsup2

Glad to see your back and feeling better!

Oooooh tours of Boma and Jiko? I have got to do that next time!!!!! That looks awesome!

Thanks for the review! When I did the tour, it started at Jiko and because I was late (the clock in our AKL room was 10 minutes slow...) I missed the first part. My sister and I really need to do this in January when we will be staying at AKL. :goodvibes

Great pictures of Jiko! We ate there in July and I had planned to try that taste of Africa appetizer but wasn't hungry enough. I knew about the wall and the birds, but had no idea about the neck rings! Very cool! :cool2:

The Jiko tour did seem like it was better than Boma. That's so cool that they do those for free! :thumbsup2

What times do they run these tour? Thinking about doing it when we are there in 3 weeks.
