Like what? Other than the really obvious stuff of course: Men have *****es--that makes them much better suited than women to playing a male role in a porn movie. Women have uteruses--that means only they are able to birth babies (except, of course, in rare cases of intersex/transgender people). Men on average are taller than women; women on average weigh less than men.

I'm not seeing how these things are related to traditional gender roles or "girl"/"boy" chores or encouraging women not to be educated, etc. What are the differences btw men and women that are relevant to this? (And have these differences actually been documented in studies published in legitimate well-respected peer reviewed academic journals?)

The Duggar family are on the Today Show and she just announced she is expecting again, number 18! WOW!

Those kids are amazing to me and just beautiful! But WOW! And the mother has done something with her hair, toned it down a little or something, it looks great!

Thank goodness for that!

From what I have heard she has been told by a doctor before that she should not have any more children.

They need to cut it out before her DH ends up raising those kids by himself.

DH's dad is one of 12. He had 4 kids and one brother had 3. The rest had 1 each. That tells me how much they enjoyed having a large family.

Well, I come from a family of 8 which was still pretty big in the 70s. None of us had more than 4 kids but I don't think any of us would say it was because we didn't like being in a big family. Well, one of us would but she is weird.

I heard her newest idea was if the kids were extra good they got to spend 5 minutes with the parents one on one. It's called reaching Duggtopia.

Actually that would not be very hard for the visiting mom. The kids all have their buddies and jurisdictions so she could just sit back and watch TV.

The Duggars pay $0 taxes to the the US Government. They have thier own "church" which is their house. They have services and everything. Freakin' scam artists!

I would think that they would pay 0 taxes just because they have so many deductions. Actually, my BIL was a minister of education in a private school for some years. Thereby he qualified as a pastor and they did not have to pay any property taxes and were able to write off any home expenses so I think there are more people doing this than we often realize. Seemed like it should be illegal to me, but it was all allowed.

Couldn't care less if she pops out a stadium of kids, but let's see the 2 older DD's are making lunch and dinner for everyone according to their website. The older kids help the younger ones get dressed ,etc.

Then on the Today show? the other day when she announced the 18th one was on the way. She said that her girls watch the calendar like a hawk-well that is just weird but they also don't want her to have anymore kids the siblings will have to raise.

In the old days, if a man snaked a toilet or fixed the roof, it was done rarely, not daily as is the cooking, cleaning, laundry and child tending. The fact is that any of these jobs can be done by either sex. There is no part of any of these jobs that require that they be done by a specific sex. If two people are married, it makes more sense that the person who is better at a specific job, do that job. At my house, I like fixing things around the house, so I do that. DH hates that kind of stuff. As people we have strengths and weaknesses totally unrelated to our sexes.

Yes, your bold line is exactly right--there has been a crapload of sociological research demonstrating how uneven on average (in men's favor) domestic labor is in the U.S. amongst married heterosexual couples in the last 30 years. Luckily things have been getting better in terms of equal sharing, but they are still not equal.

Our household is also one in which we divvy things up in terms of interest/ability/aversion rather than by gender. (Well, it would be kinda hard to divvy them up by gender since GF and I are both female. Not sure how people think that households with two men or two women manage to survive if you need a ****** to properly wash a dish or a ***** to open a jar?) I am by far stronger than GF so I lift heavy things and carry the heavier pieces of luggage. She understands computers. I take care of non-computer electronics. We both are horrible at cleaning, but she is really quick with washing the floor which I hate and I don't mind vacuuming which she hates. We split the dishes and cooking. We share the basic level of car maintenance. I do the laundry. She handles all cat poo related tasks. We both have extremely strong math/science/logic skills and are both in fields traditionally associated with males. I do all of the budgeting, bill paying, and have a more dominant role in handling the investments and financial planning. She has the dominant role in determining our computer and video game related needs/wants.

Not sure where exactly the wiring comes in on any of that.

I'm definitely there with you. We have two cats and I love them to death, but I just hate the "they poop in a box in my house" issue. We are just not good with dealing with the litter boxes (and they like to make it hard for us--once they drug a hard drive that was lying a few feet away from their box into it to cover their poo!).

Since GF has always had cats and these are the first I've had, I've been using the strategy of leaving the litter box stuff to her. Unfortunately GF is quite the procrastinator, so that strategy hasn't worked very well. But thankfully we just got an automatic litter box which scoops all of the poo away into this little compartment and keeps it there without any smell for two weeks. Hooray!

Funny we were just talking about that. One of our cats had a little trouble adjusting to the automatic litter box (I think he's afraid it's alive and that it will attack him while he's doing his business in it! ), and GF saw him go find an empty box (rather than the litter box) to pee in the other day .

So we got scared he was just going other places in the house and not at all in the litter box, and with two cats there was no way to know which one of them was producing the waste we did see in the box. So we had a litter box stakeout this weekend. We moved it to the middle of the living room and on Saturday made sure someone was in the room for about 8 hours straight to watch and see if he went in it. Luckily he did and I think he's doing fine now, but when we were worried he was going elsewhere diapers were definitely a possibility we brought up. We figured if we just cut a hole for the tail, a regular human baby diaper could probably be made to work .

my 2 cents... and no, i have not read the rest of the thread.. i just feel like i want to comment on this duggar family situation.

Part of me thinks that this woman is an incredible lady for carrying 18 kids.

the other part of me thinks she is incredibly selfish and i think of all the people that would kill for a child but cant have one do to infertility issues or something like that, and my heart breaks for them because this woman can't stop poopin' em out.

There is an abundance of information which says that men and women as genders are wired differently. Anyone who says differently has never looked into the issue any further than their own bias. The brain develops differently, the hormones affect thought and behavior, etc. That doesn't make one more suited for laundry and the other for working on a car. My single mom got us through life pretty well, by herself. And she made sure we had skills that were not gender specific.

All the boys help clean, cook and take care of the kids. They all have a smaller "buddy" they're responsible for, and the show has shown the boys out grocery shopping and has had them talking about their "jurisdiction" being the laundry or cleaning the bathroom or whatever.

All the girls helped build the house that the family lives in, and were all weilding power tools and helping move and construct furniture and even did their share of welding and concrete work.

Doesn't sound to me as though anyone in that group is marching those kids down strict gender lines.
