First of all, Prayers to those in need, requested or otherwise. I hope all families are holding together. :grouphug:

Waaaaay back when DW was still my girlfriend in high school, I taught her how to drive a stick using my brother's truck. I still haven't told him. :thumbsup2

What do you you mean "Waaaay back"? Wasn't HS like 3 years ago for you?

sorry havnt been around to much lately. i may have mentioned that dw lost her vision in 2006 in her left eye. they never could find what caused it. well, she had another mri done and there is a mass on her optic nerve.her eye started to bulge out a bit from the other one and thank god the dr. sent her for the mri. the mass is confined to the optic nerve and not in her brain.we dont know yet what the mass is but she already lost her vision in that eye so at the worst the may have to take her eye. we are just praying at this point its not cancer. so we will be off to wills eye hospital in philly (best in the world) to see what the next step will be. keep her in your prayers and we are hoping for the best!!

Keeping you both in our thoughts and prayers. Been a rough couple of days around here, hopefully everyone will enjoy some uneventful weeks to come.

Hey guys, I was perusing (:rotfl2:) the Theme Parks thread and saw where there was a boat accident involving a Sea Racer hitting a Ferry...

I've always wondered about some of the people I've seen zipping around on those things (as much as you can zip around with a 9.9 hp engine)....People forget that you can't stop a boat on a dime---even a small one. You have to keep that kind of stuff in mind if you're driving one...

Lord knows I've seen some stupid stuff on public waterways---boat ramps are great entertainment on busy weekends---but you can really get into trouble if you're not careful.

Even approaching a ferry in a vessel that size is.....questionable...

Not that I haven't made some mistakes, everyone does.....but use some common sense folks...

The law of Gross Weights most definitely applies when two boats try to occupy the same space at the same time...:lmao::lmao:

I have a Coast Guard Captain's license, and you would lose your license for something like that...:headache:

Annnddd.....(Geez, I need to get a grip)......:headache:

There's an awesome video out there of the Dutch Marines storming a hijacked vessel off the coast of Somalia...:thumbsup2

The video is full of Win and Awesome...:worship::worship::worship:

Man, I would've LOVED to have been in on that op...:cool2::cool2:

So sorry to hear this. I will be keeping your DW and you in my prayers.

I have never owned a stick shift to learn to drive on!!!:rolleyes1

You're missing half the fun of driving! Plus you can generally get better MPG, the transmissions seem to last longer, and when you feel the urge you can redline the sucker if you want to beat out that teenage kid with the 6 inch tailpipe on his Civic!

My dad taught me to drive a stick on a 1972 Ford Econoline van that had a 3 speed shifter on the steering column. That thing would go 18 inches or more between shifting gears. It was like a bench press workout, especially at 15 years old. Then the 2nd auto he taught me on was a 16 speed tractor/trailer rig :scared1:. Had 8 gears and a rear end button shifter, and he let me drive it around the parking lot of the trucking company he owned. He figured after all that, I could probably drive my 72 VW and not burn up the clutch ;)

My wife claimed to know how to drive a stick shift. Turned out that meant, "if you can't find it, grind it." We've only had automatics since.

My DW can drive a stick, but she runs the gears out to a high RPM and just sits there. She'll push 2nd or 3rd gear to 6k and just stay there  The last 3 cars we bought for her have been automatics at my insistence, telling her she didn't need the additional distraction with the kids in the car ;)

Dave,
Hang in there. We will be keeping your wife and family in our prayers.

Ok, if you don't count taking my mom's Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser diesel station wagon for joy rides when I was 14,:rolleyes1 I supposedly learned to drive in a Mercury Lynx Stick.:rotfl2:

I am from Johnstown, a western Pennsylvania mountain town. A lot of the town is built right on hillsides. Learning to work that clutch on steep grades with cars behind you was very interesting. I Think learning on a stick is a great thing because you can drive anything on wheels if you know how to work a clutch.:thumbsup2

I used to think that once I learned to drive stick, I could drive anything.

Then, my uncle let me take his 1953 Jaguar for a drive around the neighborhood. I learned a couple of important things.
1) I now fully understand the origin of the phrase "double clutch".
2) Shifting with your left hand instead of your right is a bigger mind**** than you would imagine. Downshifting from third to second almost caused my brain to explode (because you have to push away from your body, instead of pulling toward your body).

I'm sure it was. I think it would take a long time to get used to that.

Sorry to hear that, Dave. We're praying that your wife will be ok. :goodvibes

Certainly praying for your family, but if I may make an observation - she lost her vision in her left eye in 2006...so when you say she beats you home from the restaurant, you lost a race to a one eyed woman? Captain Oblivious no longer needs to hang his head in shame over his stick-shift driving ability. ;)

:lmao: one eyed and driving a 5 speed man.!!! :lmao: we all can drive stick. in the state of pa you have to drive 50 hours a keep yout learners permit for 6 months. so when dd was learning to drive we would go over to the school parking lot and she learned to drive stick.

Hey guys, haven't been around in a while and I see there has been a lot going on.

Hope everyone with illness and injury recover soon and are well(Prayers for all)

I'm jealous about the cars SOME of you learned to dirve in, mine was a 1976 VW rabbit that would throw a timing belt every two weeks. It was metallic green and i mean like bass boat metal flakes the size of peanuts.

I'm not sure if cheetos count as cheese balls, but I can assure you all that they are not pleasent to clean up after a protien spill in the back seat of a vehicle.

Less than one month before our trip to the world, can't wait.

I once got sent to Guatemala with a fellow Agent out of Miami....

We had a car rented because we were staying in Guatemala City (up in the Mountains) and driving down to Puerto Quetzal---which is on the Pacific Coast (Black, Volcanic beaches, really cool)...

My coworker had rented the car on his orders, so he was doing all the paperwork, etc. etc.

Anyway, we pick up the car at the rental place and sure enough, it's a straight drive....I see John looking at it with a quizzical look on his face. I ask him if he can drive a straight drive, to which he answers in his typical fashion "Yeah man, I got it.."

Yeah, well , we LURCHED out of the parking lot, lurched down one of the main drag through the city, then lurch and STALL in the biggest intersection of the city...:scared::scared:

Cars are honking, people are driving by and yelling at us:mad::mad::mad:

I finally kick him out and take over---then I never let him drive again:lmao::lmao:

He kept saying..."sorry, bro, I thought I could fake it":rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

:lmao: thats the only way to learn how to drive stick. i bought a small pick up truck when i was 16, it was a 5 speed. i little practice and avoided every hill for the next 2 months, and wala, im driving stick. than they decided to rip up the only highway in our area and i had to sit in traffic every day to work and home again.:lmao: than dw decided she wanted to laern so we spent some nights in the mall parking lot and now shes been driving stick for years. than dd wanted to learn, she would just about floor the gas, pop the clutch and say to me," see, i told you i wouldnt stahl it"!!!!:lmao: no but you left have my tires back there!!!:lmao:

My brother's first truck was a 78 Chevy with a 3 on the tree. (Not the one I taught DW in - that was a newer S-10.) He would love to confuse the girls by showing them the 3 pedals on the floor and what appeared to be a standard column shifter. Quite the ladies man, my brother.

If they were chewed, swallowed, and spilled out all over the back seat - then yes, they count.

Have fun at the world!

Thereabouts. ;)

And as far as what I learned to drive a stick on - probably the easiest way you can. Farm equipment. You have to really work to snub one of them out, you have a hand throttle so you don't have to worry about a gas pedal, and there is no other traffic around for miles.
