When Disney bought Marvel, they also bought the long-term contracts Marvel had with Universal. So Universal gets to keep using any Marvel characters they are already using (and I believe they have exclusive use), but they now have to make the licensing payments to Disney. The difficulty for Disney of a Marvel Universe park is that they would have to (at least as I understand Universal's existing deal) build it without using any of the characters currently in use at Universal, which is pretty difficult - no Spiderman, Dr. Doom, no Hulk, no Fantastic Four, etc. - the pickin's start gettin' pretty slim in a hurry.

But those contracts do expire as well - and Disney's been known to wait out contracts before - part of why we're just now really starting to see more and more of the Muppets in the Disney universe. Ultimately, Disney will utilize the Marvel library, all of it, but as AJ has said, whatever they do right now, will be without the big name characters.

I think that we might start seeing something Marvel based at DHS. Think about all that space that could be re-purposed around the backlot tour, etc. Not too mention the possibility of making DHS a fuller park for more cross marketing opportunities.

I tend to think that this is exactly how and where they'll start to use/ utilize the Marvel characters soon enough. Did anyone else see that the Power Rangers will be removed from the Studios this summer? I think that will just be the first step, then start to move in some of the characters that are not currently under licensing agreements with other parks. They have also begun selling Marvel merchandise at a couple of the DTD shops on both coasts... so it'll come.

I could be way wrong but building another resort that has 2,000 rooms, something big has got to be in the works:confused3

This "new" resort has actually been in the hopper for the past 2 years now (pre-dating the Marvel purchase). They have definitely been waiting for the timing to be right, and for whatever reason, they chose now as the right time to announce it. WDW hasn't seen any new regular hotel rooms in more than a decade, but lots and lots of DVC rooms. Building more and more DVC resorts has helped to "recession-proof" the greater resort in that the membership really is a captive audience with points to use or lose. Those points have been paid for, and most members aren't going to simply let them expire. They'll either use them themselves and return - ultimately visiting the parks, or shopping at DTD or dining in some of the restaurants - or they will rent the points out to other guests to return (and do the spending). (Sure there is some banking available to defer using them, but only for a year - and members can trade out, but a vast majority don't, so where do they go... the DVC resorts). BUT - to really get back into the game and get beyond the current economy and really capture the larger family demographic, they need to kick it up a notch and offer more value based accomodations. Which is why more than 1200 of those new rooms will be "family suites" instead of traditional rooms. Trying to really capture the family value demographic is something they want to run with right now, as many families want to travel, but aren't willing to put out the big bucks for deluxe, or even moderate accomodations. And if the various discounts and incentives they've been offering the past few years really do go away as has been said multiple times now in the past several months - they will need lots more value priced rooms to keep those families heading south to WDW.

POP Century's remaining construction (the Legendary Years) was completely shut down after the 9/11 tragedy and the subsequent melt-down in tourist travel. Heck all of Port Orleans as we know it today (then Dixie Landings and Port Orleans) was shuttered for 8 months after the drop-off in travel. Those POP rooms were already slated for the overall resort and going to built without a new theme park AT THAT TIME. The rooms that will be built now are simply a modification of that original resort plan, and are actually less than what would have been built in 2002 had that resort's construction not been halted. By simply utilizing the already constructed concrete shells for the traditional rooms - plus then modifying the site pads for the new "family suite" buildings - Disney is well ahead of the game and truly can get the "new" resort open in 2012 as announced. This new resort is really just the fullfillment of that resort promised back at the beginning of the decade, with a somewhat modified theme.

Following their expansion timeline of the overall resort (11 yrs after the MK Epcot opened, 7 yrs later MGM opened, 9 yrs later AK opened), one could argue that they are definitely "due" to announce/build a new theme park, but the recession definitely put a kink in the plans since here we are now, 12 years after AK opened.... There was lots of talk and marketing buzz, preview videos of a new 5th park about 2 years ago, but then the recession really took hold and all of that fizzled. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out though over the next 6-12 months. The resort master plan allows for up to 7 theme parks... but only time will tell if they ever build out the property per that allowance.

He has really been enjoying this, Dave. This morning, he got a call from one of the LPOs at 5:00 AM and he was asked if he could come over to the base early to help them out again. He was there until around 7:30 tonight helping out with all kinds of stuff. They didn't even check the stuff they had him do; they trusted that it was done correctly. He will be working with them again tomorrow for the final day of the show and then they head back to Pensacola. This has been quite an experience for him!

Very cool, it would be nice to be able to go see them at Seymour Johnson AFB, even cooler if your son was on the crew.

Does anyone know if they offer any perks for Disney stockholders, if so how many shares do you need. I want to start buying into Disney stock, I'm thinking 2012 will be a big year for them since they are planning alot of projects, I'm also thinking they will build another park based on Marvel Comics in the next few years. I could be way wrong but building another resort that has 2,000 rooms, something big has got to be in the works:confused3

I have a grand total of one share, it was the very first fathers day gift from my son, which is why I will never part with it no matter what it's value becomes. If you are interested, they got mine at oneshare.com , they have an option of where they send you a Disney themed share, it's pretty cool.

I get a nice full color brochure about the company once per year. And an occasional dividend on what I own. A decade or more ago my stock split and my share count increased. Otherwise, I know that I own a small part of the magic. That's about it. No special treatment, no special discounts. But then I don't have anywhere near a portfolio that might warrant special treatment either.

I always laugh at my annual dividend when it comes in the mail for my one share. I almost want to not cash it and keep it as a memento.

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao: Cool I'm a little less then 33 billion short right now, but if I win the Power Ball a few hundred times I might be close, If I had that kind of cash I would have a Dis Dad Resort Built (open only to official Dads with a member #):lmao::woohoo:
Can we get a first floor room near the pool/bus stop?! :thumbsup2

Heck all of Port Orleans as we know it today (then Dixie Landings and Port Orleans) was shuttered for 8 months after the drop-off in travel.
We wish they'd reopen the FQ restaurant!
And, I would really enjoy something based on the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, but I guess they don't own the rights to them. I'm not into Harry Potter but a Lord of the Rings ride would be great!

Very cool, it would be nice to be able to go see them at Seymour Johnson AFB, even cooler if your son was on the crew.
They will be performing at MCAS Cherry Point, NC, this coming weekend (May 22-23). Next year, they will be at MCAS Beaufort, SC, April 30-May 1. If he gets this, he would travel to about 1/2 of the shows as a crew chief.

And, I would really enjoy something based on the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, but I guess they don't own the rights to them.

Now there's a franchise I wish they'd acquire!! They could have been/would be a terrific addition, in my book.

I Loved the Hobbit and the LOTR Books...the LOTR movies...not so much...with the exception of Gollum/Smegul and Samwise Gamgee.

Guess you will have to settle for Narnia.

Hello Dis Dads:

It has been a long time since I have been on (too much work going-on, etc.) Anyways, I just wanted to say Hello and that I will be harding to WDW this Friday. We will not be doimng the theme parks, but we will be doing BB and TL, as well as seeing family and friends.

As a side note about a new theme park, I remember about 8-10 years ago, Disney was making plans of buidling another theme park, near Manassas, VA. Iy was suppose to be an American History based theme park, with a Louis and Clark ride, etc. Disney had all of the permits to go ahead, but local opposition put a halt to it. I had always wondered if they would build that in WDW.

Anyways, take care Dis Dads.

Yeah, but Disney dumped Narnia after Prince Caspian didn't bring in as much $$ as they wanted. Voyage of the Dawn Treader is being done by another studio, 20th Century Fox I believe, or someone else. So nothing new on the horizon with that franchise either. Oh well.

Oh yes, Disney's America. Part of Eisner's supposed to be grand and glorious Disney Decade. It fizzled fast thanks to the local uproar, environmental uproar and the historical uproar (how dare they want to build something so superficial close to actual historical sites, hmmmmphff). The concept artwork for it was pretty cool - and had they actually been able to do it, it very well might have turned out quite nicely. Oh well. Instead we got the very cheap, very tacky Disney's California Adventure full of off-the-shelf attractions - though that mess DID give us one very cool imagineer-designed winner - Soarin', which of course ended up in Epcot as well. And it's only taken an extra $1.5-2B to correct that mess nearly a decade after it opened. And through the "corrections" we got another very cool imagineer-designed winner - Toy Story Midway Mania, which of course ended up at the Studios too - and soon we'll have the new-Little Mermaid ride, which will end up at the Magic Kingdom as well. So, at least through their failure in VA, we got some cool new attractions because they couldn't finish going down that road of exploring Civil War history.

Yeah...I had read the Fox had teamed with Walden to "The Voyage of the Dawntreader" after Disney dropped it.

I loved "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe"...but "Prince Caspian" wasn't nearly as good. I do hope someone eventually makes "The Magician's Nephew"...my Favorite Narnia book.

Personally I hope they make them all, but do realize it all depends on box office viability. It'll be interesting to see how well "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" does with both a different distributor and director at the helm, since it is the linchpin for doing any more. I agree "Prince Caspian" wasn't as good as it could/should have been. I absolutely loved "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". The Chronicles are some of my favorite books ever.

Yes it would be nice to see them all made.

Here's the Voyage LINK.

OK Dad's with Kids still in school...please go answer my Spring Break 2011 POLL.

I'm trying to get a feel for when the "Typical" Spring Break will be next year. :rolleyes1

Just found this and I've got to get into this club.

Proud father of an (almost) 4 month old boy and I'm already trying to convince the wife we need to take him to WDW next year (take advantage of it before we have to pay for him ;))

We have no trips planned as of now... well at least on paper, but I'm always doing what ifs and planning in my head, so I know this is the place for me.:thumbsup2

Welcome aboard! Emma's Dad will come around shortly and give you a number.
At only 4 month's old, you have over 2 1/2 years to take him before you have to pay. I say take him 3 or 4 times before then!

I believe Disney did recently acquire some property in the D.C. area to build a DVC resort. So you might be able to get a taste of what that park would have looked like at some point in the future.

Welcome! Glad you found us. Whereabouts in Indiana are you located?

Yes they did. At this point they're still very much in the exploratory phase, and if they do actually build anything there, it probably will be a combination resort like Aulani in Hawaii is supposed to be - traditional hotel with a DVC wing, with the lazy river mini-waterpark and character dining experiences. The location, however, is not the greatest, but not far from the city though. There were several threads on the DVC boards about it when the purchase first became public knowledge speculating all kinds of things. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out, if at all. If it does, it certainly will go far towards Jay Rasulo's public comments a couple of years back about spreading the Disney magic around the country in new ways. Only time will tell though. Disney has had quite a number of public announcements through the years only to have them fade quicker than the fizz in an opened 2-liter bottle.

I've been a stockholder for several years and never got squat! Of course, my ownership probably amounts to something like 0.000001% so I don't hold a lot of clout :rotfl:
