for you and Abi. I'm sure it must have taken her time to get the courage to admit that she messed up. If this is a first time, I'd consider the stress that she is under and be a bit lenient on the punishment. I think that really getting her to talk about what was going through her head at the time is a great start. Maybe the two of you can come up with a suitable punishment together.

I agree with this! If it's a "first offense", then I'd be a bit lenient. If this is an ongoing thing that's another matter. My brother did this sort of thing habitually. Finally, my mom called his teachers and explained the problem. They came up with a phone tree to make sure that information on his homework got home. It embarrassed him so badly to have to report back to his teachers and his mommy every day that he changed his attitude pretty quickly.
