The Darling Family's Endless Summer Vacation: August 2013 New 1/24

After the character greeting we resumed our walk over to Spaceship Earth. Right then I received a text that said our neighbors from home were on the monorail heading over to Epcot at that exact moment. This made my boys very happy. This particular neighbor is my boys’ constant playmate when they are home. In fact we know at 9:00 on Saturday morning the doorbell will ring and this kid will be ready to play. (No friends until after 9:00.) Anyway, MBDF (My Boys’ Disney Friend) had a basketball tournament this week at Wide World of Sports. So we knew they were around, but we didn’t know if we’d get to meet up with them because they were balancing the tournament plus they were there with family. So my boys were very happy when I said we were meeting them at Spaceship Earth. It didn’t take too long for them to arrive and we happily said hello. The boys immediately wanted to get their ride on, but I insisted on a picture first. None of them look too thrilled, but that is mostly because I made them stop to take a picture.

So first ride was Spaceship Earth because we were right there. After that they wanted to head for Test Track. MDBF’s mom had a boot on her foot so they had a GAC card. Because of this they didn’t have to wait in the stand by line and could take up to six people. So MDBF’s dad volunteered to stay back and the rest of us headed to Test Track. I felt bad leaving MDBF’s dad behind, but MDBF’s mom informed me she was pretty sure he was going to get a snack and didn’t mind missing Test Track one little bit. This was our first time on the new Test Track. Before you get to the ride you get to design a car. This was actually kind of fun. Here is the car Wendy and I designed.

Fancy, huh? That may be the best part of the ride. I really wasn’t impressed with the revamp. Same track, but it’s like we’re going through some sort of computer simulation and frankly, it doesn’t make much sense. I miss the old ride. Though the outside part is still the same and that is kind of fun. If nothing else, this makes the choice between Soarin and Test Track at rope drop much easier. Soarin will now win every time and Test Track is something we’ll do if fastpass times are convenient or the line is short. The boys had fun on the ride together. Here is the redneck shot.

After Test Track the boys wanted another ride and I suggested the Mexico ride so we could sing along with the Three Cabelleros. The thing I remember best about this ride is the discussion I had with MBDF’s mom. They have been at Christmas many times. We are going for the first time this Christmas. So I was asking if even this ride gets lines (since I have never had to wait for the Donald ride.) She said the line gets so long it snakes back to the Pavillion entrance. At that moment I determined we may not be riding much at Christmas. After the ride the boys decided they wanted to do a Phineas and Ferb mission. I wanted dinner so I suggested we do the Norway mission because I’d never been to the Norway counter service and I really wanted to try the legendary school bread. MBDF’s dad kindly escorted the boys around Norway for their mission while us girls went and got dinner from Norway.

This was a very yummy dinner. We shared the apple and ham sandwich, a chocolate pretzel, and yes the legendary school bread.

And yes, it was delicious. That will not be the last school bread I ever have. The boys finished their mission and joined us for their dinner. By the time we were done eating, it was closing time. So we said goodbye to our neighbors and headed back to the Boardwalk. The kids were all getting tired and didn’t want to stay for Illuminations which was just getting started. So I agreed to leave, but told them we had to walk slowly through the World Showcase. So we strolled through World Showcase while Illuminations was going on. I loved it. The music was beautiful. It was a lovely summer night in Epcot and we stopped to watch the big fireworks.

Just about the time it was over we were at the International Gateway. While everyone else fought the crowds back to the front entrance we strolled on the gorgeous Boardwalk.

Oh, how I love the Boardwalk location. Before we knew it we were back in our room and settling in for our Disney Dreams.

Awwww - the Minnie flash-back pics are so adorable!

And what a fun Epcot afternoon/evening. You got to do a lot, and the fireworks look beautiful.

Just wait! Before you know it Willow will be a 13 and you'll be looking at all of her flashback pictures. We just love Epcot evenings. Best thing about the Boardwalk!

We really enjoyed our unch in Norway as well. You have made me want to try the schoolbread again tho....you see, we were too full to eat it so took it back and put it in the fridge for a couple of days....didn't love it! Maybe fresh is the way to go:thumbsup2

I thought the schoolbread was really yummy, but it probably doesn't keep well. Plus it probably wouldn't be as good cold because the filling consistency would change.

Today was a rest day. The plan was to just relax and enjoy the lovely Boardwalk resort. However, we did have a late character breakfast scheduled. So after sleeping in we headed over to the lovely Polynesian resort. This is such a beautiful place. We always talk about staying there, but have never quite had it in us to foot the bill. Rooms are usually at least $400 a night during the times we are at Disney. Rumor is DVC Polynesian is on its way. If this is true that is fabulous. It will be the way the Darling Family finally stays at the Polynesian. Anyway this morning we were just eating breakfast here. So we headed through the lobby and up to Ohana’s. We checked in and they gave us our leis. We didn’t wait too long and then when were seated enjoying that wonderful pineapple coconut bread.

I love that stuff. Though even more than the bread I love the Jungle Juice they serve here. I could drink that at every meal. First our food came around.

Who doesn’t love Mickey waffles?

Michael is pretty happy with his waffle.

We especially enjoyed the raspberries in the fruit. In fact, the server brought a whole bowl of just raspberries. See it there on the table in front of us?

First up was Mickey.

Followed shortly by Lilo.

A little while later Stitch came by.

John loves Stitch so he posed for a solo shot.

Then we waited forever. The server cleared our plates and the plates in basically the whole section. Everyone was just waiting around for Pluto. There is no way we could leave without meeting him though. He is Michael’s favorite. So finally he made it over.

He spent a little extra time messing around with Michael. (Plus we have an adorable photobomber on the right.)

Pluto knows Michael is a special friend. Anyway after Pluto we headed out. We were on our way back to the Boardwalk to spend a day just enjoying the resort. What did we find to do?

Oh, the Poly! Someday.......

Looks like you had a great 'Ohana breakfast. :woohoo: We did that breakfast for the first time this trip. It may or may not have resulted in my TR title. :rolleyes1

Can't wait to hear about your "down" day - those always sound so great in TRs; I need to learn how to do them. I take the "vacation" out of vacation. :scared:

I can't wait to hear about your Ohana breakfast now! I've been wondering about that trip report title. I really do love our down days at Disney. This trip was so long that it was pretty easy to incorporate them because we still had plenty of non down days. They are tougher to work in on shorter trips.

We made it back to the Boardwalk and we really didn’t have anything on the agenda for the day. I looked over the activity list and they were making ice cream in the community center. That sounded fun so we headed down. We arrived and they were making ice cream in plastic baggies. Basically they put half & half, sugar, vanilla and cocoa (for the chocolate) into a plastic baggie. Then they put it in another baggie of ice. Then we just had to shake it and pound it for 10-15 minutes. Easy peasy. So we spent some time pounding and shaking the bags. The CMs helped the kids out a bit, but it really didn’t take more than 15 minutes and we were eating some very soft ice cream. They even had sprinkles for the top. Here are the kids enjoying their homemade treat.

While we were eating we noticed a family of ducks in the pool. I snapped a picture, but I wasn’t quick enough. They had just gotten out. They are still cute though.

Next we decided to see what crafts were available in the community center. I know it seems strange, but we really like doing the crafts in the community centers at the DVC resorts. It is always really laidback and makes for a fun souvenir. Today we decided to get fancy and paint some pottery. We each picked out our project and our paint colors. Here are the kids working away.

Wendy’s project in particular was pretty elaborate. The boys finished first, but they were perfectly happy to transfer their attention over to the video games that were available. I finished up and I was perfectly happy transferring my attention to my book as we all waited for Wendy to finish. She finally did and we gave the finished projects to the CM. They would put them in the kiln and fire them that evening and we could pick them up the next day. Here are the final projects after they were all completed. First Michael’s.

Here is the other side.

He was a bit disappointed in his. He had a vision, but it didn’t quite work out. Next, here is John’s mug.

I thought this turned out really cute. Here is mine.

I must say, I’m pretty proud of this. I’m generally not very craftsy, but this turned out great. Right now it is sitting on my piano. My kids think it would make a great candy bowl. (Of course they do. Then there will be candy on the piano.) Last up is Wendy’s.

I love this. I think it turned out so cute and she did such a great job. So many little details that she really took the time to get right. After we were done with our projects, the kids picked out some DVDs to watch that evening and then we said goodbye to the community center. We love the community centers. For us they are a great DVC plus. It was hot outside so we decided to spend the rest of the afternoon/early evening in the pool. We had a fabulous time just splashing around and the kids always enjoy the Boardwalk slide. After a few hours in the pool we were getting hungry. We decided to go look for some food on the Boardwalk. I’m pretty sure we didn’t even change out of our suits. (Don’t worry I had a cover up.) The kids voted for pizza so we ordered a pizza and then ate it on the Boardwalk.

There was a charming little boy next to us that entertained us for much of our meal. He was a very friendly chap, and his parents told me they had met people from all over the world during their trip because he just started up conversations with whoever was next to him. He was really cute. After finishing our pizza, we picked up a few pastries for dessert in the bakery. It was hard to choose. So many fabulous choices!

Then we just relaxed on the Boardwalk. Everything was good.:cloud9: I could have stayed all night, but my kids do like a little more stimulation than me. So we went back to the room and they watched one of the DVDs we’d gotten earlier. It was Cinderella and I think this might have been the first time in Michael’s memory that he had actually seen this movie. We had the DVD when he was younger and I’m sure he’d watched it, but it has been quite a few years now that he’s had something against princesses. Amusingly, he was the one that loved the movie the most. He talked about Jack Jack and Gus Gus (the mice) for days afterward. I think they reminded him of Tom & Jerry because they were always trying to escape Lucifer, and he has always had a thing for Tom & Jerry. Anyway while the kids watched the movie I took my book out to the deck and did a little reading. Eventually we all turned in for the night, but we all agreed it had been a great day. Even the relaxing days at Disney are great days. (Shhh. Don’t tell anyone my secret, but I think the relaxing days at Disney may be the best days.)

WOW - I just loved your relaxing day! I am going to make note and do one or two of those next time. There is nothing wrong with relaxing on vacation!!!!

The crafts are great! Love that you took time out to do that....my sister's kid's love crafts, I'll have to mention this to them!

Pizza and dessert, all look delish! Great day!

Sounds like you had a wonderful day and it just shows you don't need to go to a park to have a great Disney day :goodvibes

It is funny how Disney tends to encourage us to rush, rush, rush. One of the best things about DVC is that I always know there is a next time so I can relax.

Sounds like a perfect day.
It was pretty dang close. (DH would have to be with us to make it absolutely perfect.) :)

They usually have lots of craft choices in the community centers. Definitely have your sister check them out. They are great!

That is one of the great things about Disney. The resorts are great too. I think I could do a whole vacation and never go into a park. (I might have to make an exception and go into the World Showcase for dinner.)

I love the idea of a relaxing day at Disney! You got in your parks fix with the Characters, and then just relaxed and had fun! One of these days...when I can convince my children that we don't have to run from ride to ride! ;)

It is great when we aren't running trying to get everything in. I think I've finally convinced the kids that we can still have fun without rides. Which is a good lesson for them to learn because we are heading down for Christmas this year. I've tried to prep them all that we shouldn't plan any rides. If we get on some that is bonus. We'll see how that goes.

Once again I was up bright and early for a run around the Boardwalk. It’s a great way to start the day. I made it back to the room around 8:00 and the kids were still snoozing. I woke them up and told them we need to be ready to head out in 40 minutes or so. Today was our Epcot day. Another big bonus to our back entrance to Epcot is that we can mozy out of our room and be at an entrance with no lines in five minutes. So we left the hotel at 8:40 and we were entering Epcot by 8:45. We headed straight to Soarin and actually made the first flight of the day. That was a first for us. I really like that they have eliminated rope drop and just let everyone go straight to their destinations. It really is way less hectic. As always we loved our ride over California. Next we headed over to Test Track, but I’m pretty sure the line was too long so we just picked up Fastpasses. We rode the green side of Mission Space and then we headed over to Innoventions where we played a game that was new for us. It was something about eating good food and saving the world. The boys especially seemed to enjoy it probably because we ran around hitting buttons a lot. If you haven’t noticed, I didn’t really take any pictures this morning. I must not have been in a picture taking kind of mood. Actually I don’t really have many pictures from this entire day. I clearly was not planning on doing a trip report. Anyway, we rode Test Track. This time our car creations were not saved so we raced with a generic car. The boys were kind of bummed because creating the car and “racing” it are their favorite parts of the ride. By this point the World Showcase was open so we decided to head over. John really wanted a picture with Donald since he hadn’t met him yet this trip. So we met Mexico Donald. Here are the boys waiting.

And here is the actual meet.

Donald was really messing around with the boys. I’m pretty sure he kept tickling them.

Wendy jumped in.

Donald kept on tickling Michael.

Then I hopped in.

Then we decided to do an Agent P mission. I was all about Mexico because it is air conditioned.:yay: So the boys wandered around the Mexico pavilion looking for the various special effects. Wendy and I browsed through the marketplace and I came up with the great idea of buying candy in every country. So we picked up some Mexican candy. I can’t remember what it was, but I do remember that it was just OK. The boys finished up their mission, we went for a quick spin on the Donald ride, and as we were heading out Michael decided he wanted to color Duffy. Since Michael was coloring Duffy, the other kids decided to join in on the coloring too. Wendy chose Duffy and John chose to color the new Agent P. Once Michael decided we were coloring Duffy, he was focused on a mission. Now we had to visit every country to get the stamp on the stick. I really didn’t mind. I love poking around the World Showcase. Plus I was on the Candy Quest. Next stop was Norway. The kids headed for the coloring station, and I asked the CM for candy recommendations. He recommended a candy called Smil.

So I went in search of Smil. These are similar to Rolos, but since they are made with European chocolate they are wayyy better than Rolos. I was liking the Candy Quest.:thumbsup2 Next up came China. The kids found the coloring station and I went on a candy search. During the search I came upon an entire section of the store with stuffed pandas. I knew this would get Michael very excited. You see, Michael has a stuffed panda problem. If he sees a stuffed panda, he must have it. Here is a picture of all the stuffed pandas he has acquired over the years.

See what I mean by stuffed panda problem. Anyway, there is a large selection of stuffed pandas in the China gift store and Michael was presented with quite a dilemma. He has to spend his own money on stuffed pandas. (I’m trying hard not to be an enabler.) So even though he wanted multiple pandas, he only had enough spending money for one panda. He narrowed his choice down to two pandas, but it was too hard of a decision for him to make without serious contemplation. So he decided to sleep on it. Stay tuned for later in the trip report to see what he ended up taking home. I did buy some Chinese candy. It was hard candy and nothing too memorable. Our lunch reservation was approaching so I decided we better get a move on. Where were we headed?

OOh! Candy in every country - I might be able to get DH into that. Maybe that way I can guarantee we see most of World Showcase on our Dec. trip. We only have one day in Epcot, and it's not really his thing. This might be the incentive I need - thanks! :rotfl:

Love the Donald pics!!! So cute!

And I always mean to do the candy thing and then forget. I hope you got some candy from Japan and Canada and UK - those are my favorite candy countries!

I love the candy quest! They need to mirror that with all the Agent P missions.

That is quite the panda collection, although I can see why...they are all so cute!

We are trying to put more "vacation" days into our vacations...I think its very easy to feel like you have to do everything and see everything. Your resort day sounded nice and relaxing. And crafts..who can resist crafts???

Christine
