I just checked out the varsity.com site and seee that the national championships are at Disney from Feb 11 - 15 (just happens to be dates we are there). I'm not impressed!!!! They get exclusive rights to MGM on Sunday night and it appears on MK on the Friday night too. Anyone else somewhat disappointed at this. At least they aren't in our hotel BCV!!!! I guess this is why MK has extended their hours and the EMH appears to be different from the stat schedule. Just some ranting!

Welcome to the DIS. You'll find loads of info here.

I've been in 2003 and 2004 when the cheerleaders were "in Disney town" doing their thing. Never a problem. As a matter of fact we barely saw them. The most activity is usually seen at the resort if you are near their rooms.

They only have 1 actual day to spend in the parks and that appears to be 2/14. That's the only day the crowds will be heavier due to them. We would see them sporatically in the evenings, but usually not until 7pm and by them many things were getting ready to close down. I wouldn't let it worry you.

We're there that week and I'm a bit concerned also. Are these big events? What kind of numbers are involved? Do they all stay on site? If so, surely this will make the EMH evenings busy.
Thanks
Tracy

I believe these are the college cheerleaders. We were there in Dec. with the Pop Warner crowd (middle school I think?) and they were loud and obnoxious. Not all of them, but large groups of them were. Anyway, we spoke to a cm at the locker rental in MK, and she said the younger kids are a LOT worse than the older ones. She said you can't even tell the college kids are there really.

It's the highschool national championship. I was worried because I will be there too. I think the girls will be pretty busy during the day because they are very serious about the competition. Think about the movie Bring it On. I am more worried about the parents and families.

We were there during Pop Warner - seems like a slightly different crowd, so not sure if this is wholly relevant. I never really noticed them in the parks, except for occasional cheers in the queue lines. Where we really noticed them were back at the hotels, so you shouldn't have a problem if you're in BCV. Have fun!!!

PLEASE do not compare competitive cheerleading to that movie. Not only is nearly everything in the movie illegal, it's insulting.

Overall, the cheerleaders will probably be occupied and the families generally stay with the girls...They're either watching, getting the girls ready, joining for practice, etc, etc, etc. Even brothers can be found taking pictures and just generally being with their families, not out in the parks.

As I understand they are staying at an All star resort with spillover to Caribean Beach resort. (although I think they can upgrade and move around-I read on another site about some staying at the BWV). So if you are concerned and will be there at the same time, I would call your resort.

No wonder I can't seem to add Feb. 11th to our Pop Centry reservation that starts on the 12th! I've called every day since I found out we needed the extra night ... and I plan to call everyday till I get it! *LOL* Wish me luck!

I guess my 13 year old son will be thrilled though!

My daughter cheerleading team is going down in March and we will be on site with the other teams. I understand that some people do not want to be around a bunch of high strung girls but they are not all that bad.

Through out the year places have cheer comps and if the girls were that much trouble no place, including WD would have comps. These comps bring in a lot of money. Face it, the average team have 15-20 cheerleaders and the gym has the average 2-5 teams going, plus family members. That is a lot of money at one time.

I am sorry that so many of the people feel like cheerleading and the cheerleaders are a problem. I wonder if your child was going with the team for the first time ever to WDW, would you be complaining?

KayKey ... for what it's worth ... I work on a college campus and we host cheerleading camps, soccer camps, band camps, etc. (you name it, they camp it!) and for the most part I enjoy seeing all the energetic happy campers! I've never been to Disney during a 'cheerleader' week ... but it can't be worse than general spring break crowds (can it?) The last time I was at Disney was Spring Break 1997 ... my son was young, I was expecting my daughter and our 'one day' trip to the Magic Kingdom was not what I'd hoped for ... I've vowed never to go during spring break again! (Duh, I should have known better, but I didn't. Anyway, I'm hoping this trip will be more enjoyable.

Oh yeah ... I think the college cheerleaders were there earlier this month ... "The legend continues to grow as the University of West Georgia’s coed cheerleading squad won its fourth straight Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) national championship in Orlando, Jan. 16." - http://www.westga.edu/~wgpr/news/cheer.html - GO BRAVES!

slightly ot but I stayed in the doubletree universal the other week and had real problems with cheerleaders, they made noise til well past midnight and although are only a young couple we were jetlagged so were trying to go to bed at 9 and then were up really early again screaming, banging doors etc. I had to call security constantly and in the end confronted one of the mums about the noise who looked at me like I was in the way cause i wasnt in the 'comp'

I dont think it will effect you unless you are in the same hotel as them !

i was there a couple of weeks ago when the college cheerleaders & dancers were there and it was not fun. they were staying at all-stars & were running up and down outside the rooms & screaming in the pool area the last three nights i was there until well after midnight. the last night it was 3 a.m. and security did absolutely NOTHING about this. also they were having them take the bus to mgm and transfer there to another bus for the sports complex. they were first of all rude to other guests with some of their comments about us "taking up space". the bus that i was on pulled up full of cheerleaders from asSports & the few guests from asMu that got on had to stand and then another group of cheerleaders tried to cut in front of us to get on that bus. their sponsor was very rude about "regular guests hogging the bus" so that the cheerleaders couldn't get on. personally, i thought wdw should have provided direct transportation for them so that they wouldn't be inconveniencing other guest and, MAINLY, so that they had less of a chance of being late for their contest. i heard one group say that they were supposed to be at the sports complex in 10 minutes and they had just gotten off a bus at mgm and still had to wait for a transfer over to the sports complex. i don't think they understood how the buses run generally every 15-20 minutes.

on a more positive note, i have also been there in dec. for a middle school cheerleading competition. these kids were fine. the only thing that annoyed me on that trip was one night on the bus (it was POURING down rain & everybody was tired because it was late at night) and they were singing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer on the bus at the top of their lungs. I can deal with that though even though it was a little obnoxious after a few minutes. The jr. high kids were well behaved and didn't disturb other guests at the hotels like the college kids did.

and before you start flaming me about my comments, i have been there. i have been a kid, a chaperone and a band instructor on several trips to wdw magic music days so i have been on both sides of the competition. however, as a student i didn't feel "entitled" to ruin other guests trips by being rude and acting like i owned the place because i was in the competition, and as an adult (and the chaperones when i was a student did this as well), each adult had no more than 12 students to attend to, no students were allowed to go off on their own, curfew was 10 p.m. and students were not allowed to leave their rooms after that, and common courtesy and respect for others was not only EXPECTED it was REQUIRED.

don't get me wrong, i think it's great that wdw has these opportunities for kids but they need to understand that they are not the only ones at wdw & have a little courtesy for other guests.

and by the way, except for the saturday that they were there, there was no difference in park attendance because the cheerleaders & dancers were there. but that day it was REALLY crowded at MK.

I was talking about how serious the girl's are about the competition. Hence the previous statement, "I think the girls will be pretty busy during the day because they are very serious about the competition."

MY only problem with it is when they close attractions because of it. We've been twice in Jan when they have closed Indiana Jones due to the Cheerleading competition. And lets face it, any large group of teenage girls chumming together (yes, I have one too) with all the giggling and shrieking can drive a person insane lol.

I'm just hoping nothing will close down because of it this time.

When we were there during Pop Warner in December (shudder) they closed MGM early on Friday night for an exclusive Pop Warner event. I gotta say I was pretty annoyed.

I don't know anything about the high school comp that is going to be there in Feburary, but I THINK Pop Warner is much larger. After all the discussion here, I know alot of people are nervous about going during cheerleader comps, but I don't think I'd be too concerened with a smaller group. Again, I don't know how large the Feburary comp is though.

As to whether I'd be complaining if my daughter were a cheerleader? Uh, no probably not, but I don't know if I'd volunteer to be a chaperone either! :rolleyes1
