The All-New What's For Dinner Thread!!(recipe index in OP)

Hi Everyone! I tried really hard to get on here yesterday, but every time I started a post, I got interrupted, so bear with me...

There were several times where we started the day with beautiful weather and ended up freezing. I'm talking short sleeve shirts and capris and within an hour being so cold we needed coats and blankets. :scared:

That's how Liam's baseball games have been. I don't know how they manage it, but the field temperatures seem 20 degrees cooler than those at my house and with a whipping wind.

That turkey recipe sounds SO good.

Shoot, I'd try to hit the darn ball if I got an ice cream :rotfl:
:lmao:

Change of plans...we decided not to go to NH this weekend.

It sounds like you still have a great time planned. Becky and I are guilty of making plans to go out, but then deciding to just stay home instead. It drives her DH crazy.

I have ridicuously huge things of canneloni, ravioli, gnocchi, mozzarella cheese, and tons of other stuff!

Yum!

I guess the other parent's wouldn't approve if you came to the games toting a box of wine! ;)

They would be mad they didn't think of the idea first! I am glad to hear Alexis is having a great time. It must be hard hearing about the trip without being there.

The last 2 times we've gone to WDW, I've gotten sick after we returned.

I always get sick after Disney too. I hope you're feeling better.

Laura- My daughter is 7, do you think Harry Potter books are appropriate for her, content wise?

To be honest, I think seven might be a little too young. I think the first book would be fine, but the whole series probably isn't. Harry is 11 in the first book and turns a year older in each subsequent book. As he gets older, the books get more intense -- the last one isn't even shelved in the Children's section of our library. It really depends on your daughter, though, and what she likes to read.

I found out what is wrong with my car, the best part is that is will be less than $200.00 to fix :worship:

Isn't that just a great feeling when the mechanic tells you it is a small fix? I hope the part comes in soon!

Another fun thing you can do, once you've read the books, plan a special meal with food themed around the book. We did this when Katie read the Wizard of Oz.

Glynis, I am always impressed with all the fun activities you come up with...you are a great mom!

I hope Alan is okay.

Scratch that, my mother would think you were a psycho with murder on your mind! :scared1:
:lmao: :lmao:

Andrew is complaining of a sor throat. He is in slo mo today.

I hope he feels better. Good luck to him at the game!

Thanks for the congtas for my DD. I am VERY Proud of her. this is the kid who always got just good enough grades to pass and play sports. Now she has been nominated for Athlete of the year and got honor roll!!!

Wow, that is terrific! Congratulations to your daughter, and to you, for helping to get her there!

Not really, I think I'm just having growing pains. I love New Orleans but I'm getting tired of the crapola going on there.
 to you and all the NOLA gals. I don't know how you do it.

Okay, I think I've caught up, and I do apologize if I missed someone. I spent yesterday putting together my new grill (the old one was crumbling apart) so tonight we will fire it up for the first time (hopefully...if I put it together right). We aren't having anything exciting though. I am thinking burgers since we have skating and then summer swimming signups.

Shovan & liamandcaili- Thanks for the "Crystal Congrats" liamandcaili, your trip to the basball game sound like my trip the softball field the other night. If there was not green grass I would have sworn it was the middle of January!

OKWMOM- He auctually didn't play that card. But I wish he had! He was so UGLY, it was hunting season and he wa missing a big trip. Trust me he almost ended up in the woods until his friends came back to retreive him!

Not feeling well enough to read back so if I've missed something major I am so sorry. Started feeling yucky yesterday, stomach bug, fever, body aches.....

Hopefully won't last too long.

I was wondering where you were this morning. Sorry your sick, I hope it's just a 24 hour thing.

Glynis- Can I just say I think you must be the best mom ever, not only do you have such creative ideas, you also have the patience to carry them out. You must have great kids. It also sounds like you live in a great family community. I don't even know you, but you are such a wonderful person.

It's like I tell my husband, I like to create memories for my kids on the off chance that they'll remember those times and not the times that I'm screaming at them to clean their rooms, etc. I really like to plan special times like those. It's the every day stuff that gets me down!

I do have great kids, don't get me wrong, but they are normal. They like to complain about having to do chores.

Thanks for your kind words. I do have to say, though, that this group of ladies has inspired me more in the last year than anything else has done. I consider myself blessed that I clicked on this thread when Lindsay started it!

Glynis- How is your hubby doing? I hope all is well with him.:flower3: I remember when my DBF was layed up after his big toe was amputated with the lawnmower. Not fun! But they wouldn't keep him in the hospital any longer..I tired

Alan is doing ok. He is staying home from work, as his ankle is all purple and hurts him to walk. They put him in a walking splint, and told him to stay off it as long as he can. So far, so good. We're not driving each other crazy, yet!

You are being far too modest. You ARE an incredible Mom and as I've said in the past you guys are "The All-American Family" to me.:goodvibes

Glynis, We all feel blessed by you! Not only your great recipes but as a Mom you are quite an inspiration to all of us! :thumbsup2

Glad to hear Alan's ankle isn't too bad! It could have been far worse, hope he heals up real soon!:flower3:

Oh, no! Sounds like a bug got you while your emotional resistance was down! Here's hoping that it doesn't last long! Take care of yourself!!!

Well, so much for Alan getting to stay home! We are experiencing quite a rainstorm right now! Several of the rivers and streams in our area, were already full due to the spring thaw, and with this storm, we have flooding headed our way. They are sending Alan up in the helicopter where he can sit and man the camera. Oh well, at least he's getting paid!

Found the recipe. It's Tyler Florences from Food Tv

Thank you!

Tonight we are having Korean roasted chicken. It's marinating in my fridge right now. I'm thinking of orzo or rice pilaf to go with. I'd really love to make couscous, but no one else in my family will eat it. Some kind of veggie, too. I'll decide when I see what looks good at the store.

Recipe, please? :flower3:

My job is about 1.5 hours from Hilton Head (Charleston) and I live about another hour from there. If you make it to Hilton Head, you ought to take a day trip to Charleston. Not just because we could meet for dinner/drinks/whatever, but because I think it'll remind you somewhat of N.O. Similar architecture, great food, but you're not likely to see a live jazz concert pop up anywhere.

I LOVED Charleston when I visited. I could live there.

Poor guy

My granddaddy is back in the hospital so I went there this morning for awhile - heart issues. He is in good spirits and felt well enough to chew out the nurse in the ER last night. They didn't have any beds so they just lined them up in the hall - well, the nurse wouldn't let him take his insulin! She said she needed to get him some from the pharmacy but they were so overwhelmed it never came so he did it himself with the insulin he carries at all times - and she yelled at him. Sorry, but an insulin dependant diabetic NEEDS his insulin!

He's a fiesty old man :lmao:

I will be in late but am making a swiss cheese stuffed chicken with bacon and mushrooms, and fresh green beans on the side. Diet? What diet?

Can anyone tell me if what liquor would be an okay substitute for port or madiera? I have a recipe I've been hanging on to since last F&W fest. It calls for port or madiera macerated dried cherries. I bought the cherries, but forgot the liquor. I have cream sherry, cognac & cointreau in the house and really don't think I need one more liquor in the house. Which one should I use?

Aimee, That's just plain scary! What if he wouldn't have been well enough to take his own insulin! Glad that he's doing okay & is such a fiesty old guy!! Hope he gets well & out of the hospital real soon! :flower3:

I agree! :sad2:

I'd go with the cognac, maybe thin it out a little. Though I've never had sherry. Maybe cognac and red wine mix? Like sangria? No wait, that's brandy.... Whatever, guess I'm not that much help anyways.

Kathy- I too wondered where you were this morning. I hope you feel beeter. And relax. It'll help.

Glynis- You are the kind of parent I hope that I could be (if we ever decide one way or another). I like that you don't take EVERYTHING too seriously and you're ready to be right there in the middle of the fun with the kids.

Now I'm really impressed. I don't think my assembly skills are good enough for that job. Or maybe I'm just too scared of the gas.

Kathy, I'm so sorry you're sick. I hope you start to feel better soon.

Recipe, please? :flower3:

It's a new recipe for me, so I'll be the guinea pig first and I'll share if it's good.

And BTW, there are churches in Charleston. ;) Lots of them. They don't call it the Holy City for nothing. So if you get tired of Texas, head this way.

I do hate to hear about your grandfather's experience in the ER. I'm just glad he had his insulin with him and didn't let the nurse brow beat him into waiting on them to get him some.

Thanks for trying! I found this site http://www.foodsubs.com/
it says that port is sweet, so I'm going to go with the sherry. Especially since I re-read the recipe & it calls for 1 whole cup! I'm not using a whole cup of expensive cognac or cointreau, better to go with the cheaper sherry!

The site might be of interest to everyone it has subs for all kinds of things, not just alcohol! ;)

Too funny...this is where I went to find your answer for you. :thumbsup2

Gretchen -- Don't be too impressed by the grill assembly. I got stuck on Step One...three times I put the same part on the wrong way. :sad2: Note to anyone assembling things: If you have to use a tool other than the ones listed on the directions, you are doing something wrong!

It's starting to look like my barbecue might be rained out this evening. I guess I better start thinking about alternatives. Right now, not cooking at all seems like a good idea.
