The All-New What's For Dinner Thread!!(recipe index in OP)

Found the recipe. It's Tyler Florences from Food Tv

Maple-Roasted Turkey with Sage Butter Recipe courtesy Tyler Florence

1 sticks unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
1/4 bunch fresh sage, finely chopped
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 (12 to 14-pound) fresh turkey, giblets, neck, and liver discarded
8 strips bacon
1/2 cup maple syrup
2 tablespoons hot water

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and remove the top rack of the oven.
Put the butter and sage in a mixing bowl and mash with a fork or spoon until the sage is well incorporated. Season with salt and pepper.

Rinse the bird thoroughly inside and out with cold water, and pat dry with paper towels. Sprinkle the cavity and skin liberally with salt and pepper. Using your fingers, gently lift the skin from the turkey breast and slip the remaining seasoned butter under, massaging the breast meat as you go. Truss the bird by crossing the legs over one another and tying with a piece of kitchen twine. Shingle the bacon strips over the breast so it's totally covered. Put the turkey on a rack in a large roasting pan, cover the turkey with aluminium foil, and place in the oven.

In a small bowl, stir the maple syrup with 2 tablespoons of hot water to thin. Roast the turkey for 2 hours, basting with the maple glaze every 30 minutes. Continue cooking until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the meaty part of the thigh registers 170 degrees F. The thigh juices will run clear when pricked with a knife, about 3 hours total (15 minutes per pound). About 1/2 hour before you think the turkey is done, remove the foil so that it can brown. When done take the turkey out of the oven and put the roasting pan on the stovetop. Transfer the turkey to a serving tray to rest at least 20 minutes before carving. Serve with Turkey Gravy

However I do have a funny for ya.:lmao: Rick told me yesterday that I eat the strangest, most bland, food ever. If it tastes like dirt I'd eat it. WTH?!? You (Rick) eat beets that's like sucking down potting soil! And I eat weird things?!? (All this came on because of the butternut squash soup- he doesn't like that, who knew?:confused3 ) So, for dessert last night he got a package of gummi worms I found at the place next door.

And he was told(insert Nancy voice here)"if you don't like it go make yourself a sandwich"

I think he got the point.:rolleyes1

:lmao: :lmao: That sounds like my mood when I start a diet. Fat and calorie deprivation makes me snarly. :rotfl: At least if you kill him, he has new pants.

Get a load of these:

Yep. A cat now owns you. ;) Ours sit in my kitchen window sill (on the outside if that makes sense) and watch me cook dinner. They are entranced when I run the water.

My daughter is graduating in a few weeks, I am so glad to know that I am not alone with the way that I can imagine myself reacting.
The ballerina was BEAUTIFUL!
i can relate to the COLD baseball/Softball games. My daughter had a game last night it was 47 degrees, raining and the wind was whipping!! pure torture!!
Tonights dinner is BBQ spare ribs, corn on the cob, coleslaw (homemade) and was thinking about trying to attempt a corn bread. Wish me luck!

Congrats to your daughter on her graduation. And wow on the temps. It is hot already here.

Sounds like a great weekend! DH & I are going to get the deck ready for the season, lots of planting and I am working on a series of decoupage' clay pots for some of my herbs.......Some reading and chit chat once the outside is done with DH over a glass (or two) of wine:goodvibes

You deserve a glass (or two) after all that! I hope the weather cooperates.

I'd love to have a whiff of cool air - send it my way, please? :worship:

Me too. I left my office to run some errands at lunch today and almost passed out when I got in my car. And it's only May. :sad2:

I found out what is wrong with my car, the best part is that is will be less than $200.00 to fix :worship: I was afraid I would have to scale back my vacation. The bad thing is that the part is on backorder but the car is drivable. I don't do well with out my wheels. I felt trapped.

That is good news about the repair. I hope the part comes in soon though. But all in all, I'd rather have a backordered part and a $200 bill than a $1000 part that is ready and waiting on me.

It sounds like she's already planning their day! Chris told me this morning that when she told her they were going to Epcot, she had a list of rides she wanted to do! And she had it all correct. Next thing we know, she'll be doing our trip planning!

It sounds like you are bringing her up right. Mini Iron Chef and Executive Disney Planner. What more could you want. :goodvibes

Gretchen- how long have you been feeling lousy? It seems like this cold is hanging on.

I drive my son nuts with the thawing thing. He kept sticking my meat back in the fridge and I thought that I was losing my mind!

Actually, I just started coming down with it on Friday. Kenny started with it last Tuesday and is just starting to feel better. Now, Hailey is sneezing and is really out of sorts. She is next, I just know it.

Tell your son I survived several years of "unsafe thawing". He'll live. Unless you kill him for delaying dinner too many times.

:lmao: Y'all two better come home before one of you ends up in a freezer in Detroit! :rolleyes1

Love your F&W ticker!

Mama Nancy, You are always trying to send me to the doctor!!!
I don't think I have a sinus infection...yet. Don't worry, I'll know when I do. Thanks for worrying about me!

It sounds like she's already planning their day! Chris told me this morning that when she told her they were going to Epcot, she had a list of rides she wanted to do! And she had it all correct. Next thing we know, she'll be doing our trip planning!
I'm good to go.... Rick doesn't know the freezer trick...yet.

But I found a house up here that I want. Small community between Detroit and Toledo. Gated community, 2 and 3 bedrooms, approx 1100 sq ft, garden homes I think they call them (looks like regular 2 story house just 4 or 5 of them squished together), 2 car garage, 40 ft boat dock, inlet into Lake Eerie, $189,000. That, in the French Quarter would buy me a walk in closet with a bathroom! I could fish off the dock! In my jammies! How cool would that be?!?

But, I'd have to learn to deal with snow again. And convince Rick to keep working to pay for it. And fly to NOLA every other weekend so I could be witht my Peeps!:lmao:

Sheryl.... I agree with Nancy. Go! Doctor! Now!

And thanks for the ticker comment. It took me forever to get it to work right. It kept wanting to give me Cinderella no matter what I picked!:headache: I love Cindy and all but dang! Gimmie! And please tell Alexis to plan in time for "our time" at F&WF! Or else I'm gonna have to come steal you and Bob away! Can that chair carry all of us and can it outrun Alexis?!?

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao: You're killing me but I have to confess, if you start to follow my lessons, make sure that you have some almond cleaner or something. You have got to have something to make him think twice when he eats if he annoys you ;) First gummi worms and then almond cookies......makes him wonder if he went to far and there :rotfl:is cyanide in his squash soup

He knows....that I know....that he knows.....that I know where he sleeps. And he's gotta sleep sometime! I'm the nightowl.:rolleyes1

I swear Sir, he stops breathing in his sleep often...this is the first time it was permanent. Oh, wait, that's where the freezer comes in. Nevermind!

And I loved the boxed wine comment. We had a youth hockey tourney stay at our hotel this weekend. At the hot tub we take our wine in an empty water bottle (no glass). All of us adults were refilling our "water" glasses(we met some mighty nice Canucks!). And a mom came over and asked if we could share our water cause she was about done with the swimming kind!:rotfl2: Poor woman.

I have to mention...I have started reading the first Harry Potter book and I am loving it!!! I thought that I would read it first, then Andrew then we can watch the movies together. This is going to be our summer thing. He struggles a little with reading and writing so I am trying to stay on top of it.

Hope everyone is enjoying the night!

Can I just say as a former English teacher that I applaud what you are doing? Not only are you encouraging Andrew to read, but you are demonstrating that you think it is important. Most boys don't want to read, but by modeling that you think it's important, he'll look at it differently.

I've done this with my kids, as well. Another fun thing you can do, once you've read the books, plan a special meal with food themed around the book. We did this when Katie read the Wizard of Oz. I made Haystacks (for the scarecrow), Emerald City punch (green kool-aid served in aluminum cups for the Tinman), Ruby slipper cookies (just sugar cookies dusted with strawberry jello before cooking them), and Cowardly Lion cupcakes. Then, the entire family ate dinner on tv trays while we watched the movie. It was a fun night, and even more fun when Katie said that she liked the movie, but the book was better.

Sorry I didn't post yesterday. It was crazy!

I had to get to the school early to deliver all the stuff I made for the bake sale (rice crispy squares, and 4 dozen cupcakes), then I had to go to the storage room, and help sort out all the games, etc. I made a quick run to Walmart for some basics that we are out of here, then back to the school to begin set up for the carnival. It was 94 degrees and no wind. Very hot! When the kids were out of school, we ran to my sister's house for a quickie birthday party for my niece Olivia, then back to the school for the carnival. I was put in charge of the ring toss, and it was crazy! There were so many teenagers there that would push their way in front of the little kids, and it really made me angry! I finally shut my game down for about 15 minutes to encourage them to leave my area. Luckily, they did, and the little kids got a chance to play.

The carnival ended at 7:30, and I spent another half hour cleaning up (thanks to my kids for helping to haul stuff back to the storage room). By this time, my back was killing me, and I was hungry, but didn't feel up to cooking. So, I stopped at Teriyaki Stix and ordered a curry bowl. Oh, boy! That hit the spot! It was an early night for me. Unfortunately, it didn't last!

My neighbor across the street had a heart attack, so we had the ambulance and fire engine come into our neighborhood at 1:00 in the morning. I slept through it all, but Alan decided I couldn't wait until morning to hear the news, so he woke me up to tell me all about it. Of course, I couldn't get back to sleep, but he dropped right off and began snoring. I stood it for an hour, and then I woke him up and told him to find another place to sleep. He grumpily went to the couch for the remainder of the night.

Anyway, things are back to normal (whatever that is) around here. I have no more school responsibilities (other than making sure the kids get there). School is out on the 30th, so we're counting down the days.

Dinner tonight was a really yummy ham and tomato quiche. I was really surprised that my kids liked it. I love hot tomatoes, but wasn't sure the kids would. They ate it all up! I managed to save a piece for Alan, but now we don't know if he'll make it home to eat it. He just called from the hospital. He was covering a high school baseball tournament for his station, and got hit in the ankle by a line drive foul ball. Now, he's waiting for the x-rays to see if it's broken or not. Please send pixie dust that he's ok. I cannot have a housebound husband! That would not be good for either one of us!

Just finished watching American Idol, and now I'm going to get the kids to bed. Night all!

I love this idea! Rick and I went to the book release party for HP7 and had the best time! They had pumpkin pasties and meat pies, and pumpkin juice, and buttered rum(for us adults!). It really made it worth everything. After listening to me make costumes for us (Rick was on the road) and asking more than a million question when we went out that night Rick finally started listening to me read the books to him while we were driving. He wondered what he was missing!

Hi Glynis. Hope Alan is ok.

Thanks, Lori. He's still at the hospital waiting for the doctor to look over the x-rays.

I love to get creative with books! It's part of why I became an English teacher. Now, I try to use things like this to get my kids interested in books.

My sister and I also throw a Disney themed party for our kids before our families big trips to Disneyland. It's so much fun to try to come up with different ideas.

Merle- I am coming to your house next Thanksgiving!

Sure, I think it's our turn this year. :thumbsup2

Scratch that, my mother would think you were a psycho with murder on your mind! :scared1:

:rotfl:

I have been on several Dis meets over the years and my DM always tells me not to go anywhere alone with anyone. Like a bunch of middle aged married woman and mothers were going to bump me off and stuff me in a dumpster somewhere. :sad2:

This is the same woman who told me that no one is going to bother me when the patio door was left open by the guys building our deck. The patio door that is about two feet from where my desk with my computer, printers and most times my camera sits and is close enough to the road that someone could come in and take off with everything in less than 10 minutes.

He knows....that I know....that he knows.....that I know where he sleeps. And he's gotta sleep sometime! I'm the nightowl.:rolleyes1

:rotfl:

Good Morning!

Will be back to catch up further when the boys get off...Andrew is complaining of a sor throat. He is in slo mo today.

He has a game tonight so I bought some rolls and cold cuts...we'll have heros.

Have a great day!

Quick morning check in here as well....Getting Ross off to school, which means telling him to keep his eye for the bus as he is standing in the doorway reading. The bus gets him at the end of our driveway, but he has stood right there before reading as it drove on by. (he can see if coming up the road and heads out to wait, he wasn't out that morning so she didn't slow down, grrrrrrr....I gave him a ride in my pj's and wild morning hair....hasn't happened since;))

I have a million things to get done before my dad comes on Sunday...I will get them all done, but it is stressing me!! Lack of sleep, remodeling the kitchen and upstairs bath, and dealing with the end of school meetings and more docks then time to get them them in with is getting rough!
That being said our suppers have not been very creative...last night was burgers and tonight will be steak tips with a couple of sides....

I will catch up later this afternoon!! Have a great day!

Glynis- Can I just say I think you must be the best mom ever, not only do you have such creative ideas, you also have the patience to carry them out. You must have great kids. It also sounds like you live in a great family community. I don't even know you, but you are such a wonderful person.

Lauren- sore throats at our house this time of year means pollen season, or as we call it- yellow season. We are surrounded by pine trees so everything gets dusted in pollen. You can't even open the windows, it will come in and coat the house.

Today is busy day, my dd has a doctor appointment then she's off to the dentist to get a couple of teeth sealed. Better her than me. We'll be by a Trader Joe's so I'll pick something up there.

Good Morning all,

NancyG56- Thanks for the congtas for my DD. I am VERY Proud of her. this is the kid who always got just good enough grades to pass and play sports. Now she has been nominated for Athlete of the year and got honor roll!!! Go Crystal!!!:woohoo:

Disney Ron- Dinner was great, Boneless BBQ Ribs cooked on the grill with BBQ sauce and apricot preserves, Homemade cloeslaw, homemade cornbread. Going to have a repeat tonight as DBF is going to be away for the weekend :cool1:

merle1966-Thanks for posting that yummy sounding Turkey Recipe. I am all over that one!

OKWmom-Thanks for the congrats to DD. She has another game tonight. Temps should be in the 60's. HEATWAVE!!

Glynis- How is your hubby doing? I hope all is well with him.:flower3: I remember when my DBF was layed up after his big toe was amputated with the lawnmower. Not fun! But they wouldn't keep him in the hospital any longer..I tired

Have a good day

Tell your son I survived several years of "unsafe thawing". He'll live. Unless you kill him for delaying dinner too many times.

:lmao::lmao: I have to confess that I could not get dinner on teh table on time if i was paid to do it! He is safe there, but there is no betting that between his wife and my DD he will survive being a PITA ;)

Nevermind!

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Lori, are you looking for a new home? Every time Buddy and I talked about moving and everytime we discussed the merits of something down South I get cold feet. I love my seasons even though I whine throughout most of them :lmao:
Sorry I didn't post yesterday. It was crazy!

I have no idea how you do it. I cannot and I have no little ones, I'm not pregnant and I have no issues if I don't feed my bunch.

Hoping to hear that Alan is fine.

Sure, I think it's our turn this year. :thumbsup2

Scratch that, my mother would think you were a psycho with murder on your mind! :scared1:

:rotfl:

Has your Mom been talking to Buddy???????? :rotfl2:

Good Morning!

Will be back to catch up further when the boys get off...Andrew is complaining of a sor throat. He is in slo mo today.

These Spring colds are really going around! I hope he is fine for his game tonight.

Quick morning check in here as well....Getting Ross off to school, which means telling him to keep his eye for the bus as he is standing in the doorway reading. The bus gets him at the end of our driveway, but he has stood right there before reading as it drove on by. :lmao::lmao:, Wendie- don;t worry about what gets done before your Dad arrives. He is going to be happy just to be with your family, no one is going to care about anything else.

:cheer2::cheer2:

I think we are going to have leftovers tonight. I am trying to get my plants in their pots and in the ground today and get to see my Aunt too. I had let the back yard get out of control and then used some of my gardens as "plant keepers" while I did the others. Now I have to finish those as well :scared1:

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Lori, are you looking for a new home? Every time Buddy and I talked about moving and everytime we discussed the merits of something down South I get cold feet. I love my seasons even though I whine throughout most of them :lmao:

Not really, I think I'm just having growing pains. I love New Orleans but I'm getting tired of the crapola going on there. We live in the French Quarter, which is pretty much "downtown". With housing prices like they are we'll never be able to afford to buy anything there. Crime is rampant- there were a couple of muggings and beatings at the cross street near us over the weekend. When I'm home and Rick's gone I don't go out much. I'm just kind of over it.:rolleyes1 We've outgrown the Bourbon Street crowd and I'd rather leave town for Mardi Gras than deal with the crowds and the traffic.

I've always wanted to live by the water, I guess I've come to realize that it doesn't necessarily have to be the ocean.

I have to confess, I stay away from the Dr
Tell your little Princess that she is officially "One of us" Disney Planner Extraordinaire!

:First gummi worms and then almond cookies......makes him wonder if he went to far and there :rotfl:is cyanide in his squash soup

I drive my son nuts with the thawing thing. He kept sticking my meat back in the fridge and I thought that I was losing my mind!

Mmm-mmmn, I knew it, You'll send me to the dr for a stuffy nose & a little dizziness, but you won't go until your ear explodes!

Almond cleaner/cyanide in Rick's squash soup! :rotfl2: Be very careful, you don't want to give Lori anymore ideas!!! :rotfl:

I'm good to go.... Rick doesn't know the freezer trick...yet.

But I found a house up here that I want. Small community between Detroit and Toledo. Gated community, 2 and 3 bedrooms, approx 1100 sq ft, garden homes I think they call them (looks like regular 2 story house just 4 or 5 of them squished together), 2 car garage, 40 ft boat dock, inlet into Lake Eerie, $189,000. See what I mean Nancy! She already has getting rid of Rick, all figured out! With no freezer necessary! :lmao:

Lori, that garden home sounds really nice. All except for the snow that is! That price is unbelievable! The garden home community we looked at near Baton Rouge was around $250,000 & "the lake" was a little man made pond & there definitely was no boat dock! But we sure don't want to lose y'all to Detroit!

I'm sure Alexis will have our Oct trip all planned out. And unfortunately the more weight we put on Bob's chair :moped: the slower it's going to go! And the kid can run really fast!!! :Pinkbounc

Wine in the water bottle, uh. So this is what happens when a French Quarter couple heads out on the road! The corruption of anyone near the hot tub!! :lmao:

Sorry I didn't post yesterday. It was crazy!

Glynis just hearing about your day, wears me out!! Don't forget to take care of yourself! I really hope Alan is okay!

We really don't want you to have to resort to any of Nancy or Lori's tactics!;)

Will be back to catch up further when the boys get off...Andrew is complaining of a sor throat. He is in slo mo today.

He has a game tonight so I bought some rolls and cold cuts...we'll have heros.

Have a great day!

Hope Andrew gets over this, hopefully just his allergies.

Wendie, Slow down girl, I know you're excited about your Dad coming. But your going to wear yourself out before he gets there!!!

Laurie, I missed your post about your DD yesterday.

Congrats to Crystal!!!! :cheer2: Wow! Honor roll & Athlete of the Year!!! Quite an accomplishment, you should be proud!!!!

I have been on several Dis meets over the years and my DM always tells me not to go anywhere alone with anyone. Like a bunch of middle aged married woman and mothers were going to bump me off and stuff me in a dumpster somewhere. :sad2:

But honestly Merle, the idea that at this stage of my life (married, middle aged, three kids) someone could still think I might be a danger to anyone but myself is almost a compliment. Dangerous to me is spicy food just before bed.

Glynis- How is your hubby doing? I hope all is well with him.:flower3: I remember when my DBF was layed up after his big toe was amputated with the lawnmower. Not fun! But they wouldn't keep him in the hospital any longer..I tired

:scared1: How horrible. And I cannot imagine how much he milked that for sympathy/attention/waiting on him hand and foot.

Lori, are you looking for a new home? Every time Buddy and I talked about moving and everytime we discussed the merits of something down South I get cold feet. I love my seasons even though I whine throughout most of them :lmao:

Wendie- don;t worry about what gets done before your Dad arrives. He is going to be happy just to be with your family, no one is going to care about anything else.

I take offense to that first reply. ;) We do have seasons down south - summer, hotter than you-know-where, less hot but still need the A/C, and winter lite (no snow, no ice storms). See all four seasons. :rotfl:

And I was going to tell Wendie much the same thing. Most men wouldn't notice if the house was clean or not.

I don't blame you. I've outgrown the "downtown" lifestyle myself. Heck, I'm in bed before most of the night life takes place anyhow. But WOW, what a change a move to Detroit would mean. Snow. Ice. Do you own a real coat? I don't, not in the northern winter sense of the word. Heck, other than my tennis shoes, I don't own a pair of closed toed shoes. They do have diet coke there, don't they?!? ;)

Tonight we are having Korean roasted chicken. It's marinating in my fridge right now. I'm thinking of orzo or rice pilaf to go with. I'd really love to make couscous, but no one else in my family will eat it. Some kind of veggie, too. I'll decide when I see what looks good at the store.

I still have all our winter stuff from living in Indianapolis for 10 years. It's in a storage unit in Louisville. But I have adjusted fairly well to the 4 seasons of the South so I'd have to readjust back to the North. And I wore flip flops the whole time at Butler and Purdue-even in the snow...think I can still manage that.

And Diet Coke is everywhere, in abundance, up here, thank god. I'd hate to have to smuggle it.:rolleyes1

Soooooo.... How far are ya from Hilton Head? Rick wants to take me to see his "ole stompin' ground". He used to lifeguard there many, many moons ago.:rolleyes1

My job is about 1.5 hours from Hilton Head (Charleston) and I live about another hour from there. If you make it to Hilton Head, you ought to take a day trip to Charleston. Not just because we could meet for dinner/drinks/whatever, but because I think it'll remind you somewhat of N.O. Similar architecture, great food, but you're not likely to see a live jazz concert pop up anywhere.

Drive by here! Going to take the kiddos to lunch, then run errands. Keep your fingers crossed for me. i have an interview at a high-end Italian place tomorrow! I need the money!
I am trying to use all of my stuff from the restaurant, so last night was chicken fettucine alfredo (heavy whipping cream, always a lo-cal treat!), salad, and vanilla caramel pie (graham crust, vanilla pudding, caramel sauce, Cool Whip). I just stuck to the salad. The wedding is almost here!
