The 5 foods you miss when you get home from the USA

There's not a huge amount on my list, because my stomach can't handle too much high fructose corn syrup, and that's in pretty much everything

The mince meat that goes into burgers (just seems so much nicer then our mince meat... )

I have taken notes of the things you all have posted that I will be adding to our to do list! We have never been to Taco Bells or the Cheesecake factory so will be going to both for sure! We loved iHop and always found the staff super friendly!

The SMELL of waffles in the pop centry at the food court at breakfast.

OK so I have been back for 5 months and have been in major withdrawals but tonight is the first night i ventured back to the Dis and your making me go back to my disney depression lol.

My top 5 foods are

1. Caramel Apples

2. Choc covered Strawberries

3. White chocolate Raspberries from Rocky Mountain.

4. Salt water Taffy

5. Yak and Yeti Cream cheese won tons OH YUM!

I dont think i can wait 18 months until my next trip but I guess thats the price you pay when you buy a house!!

I agree. We ate at DH's bosses house a few times and it was great. We also got invited by one of DH's colleagues to a 'cook out'. It was one of the best nights we had over there. Not just the food, but the company was pretty awesome too.

we want to try taco bell and omg, so much food from disneyland when we go back this year, as we missed so much last year... we practically didn't eat on our trip last year as we were too busy trying to see everything...

things we did love:

1. bagels with cream cheese & lox (carlo)
1. hot chocolate & churros from disneyland (trina)
1. kung pao shrimp flatbread from islands dining room @ RPR hotel (me).

the rest of the list in no particular order:

dennys food (omg, their apple pie was delicious!!)
the frozen hot chocolate & sundaes at serendipity 3
NY pizza
dumplings and banana cream pie via room service at RPR @ universal orlando.
jolly rancher lollies

3) Hot Dogs, don't know what it is, but every hot dg I've had while in the USA tastes so much better than here.

Also on my list would be...

- Chili Cheese Fries
- Clam Chowder from Fisherman's Wharf
- The salads. Whenever we felt like being 'healthy' we'd get one salad and share it between 3...they were huge!
- Ribs. mmmmm
- Disney cupcakes. I think my family singlehandedly paid for the bakers' daily wage with the number of cupcakes we bought.

Whoops I've gone past my 5...but also the hundreds of different soft drinks...why have plain Coke when you can have cherry, grape, lemon, lime, vanilla...yeah my dentist didn't like me after we got back.

We don't have the chains of foods like you do in the US. We have some, but very few, compared to over there. But we don't have the population either. The whole population of this country (Australia) is about the same as just the population of LA.

We have McDonalds, KFC, Burger King (Hungry Jacks), Subway, Red Rooster, Krispy Kreme, Donut King, some pizza places. But we don't have these big chain restaurants like you have over there, Cheesecake Factory, Rainforest Cafe, IHop, Taco Bell, PF Changs, Bubba Gumps, Dennys, Johnny Rockets, the list goes on. So those things are a novelty for us as it's not something we can have every day if we wanted, we can only have it on vacation. These places have things not available over here and it's something different.

Portion sizes in the USA are HUGE and I think our food tends to be healthier and smaller portions. Sushi is a big fast food around where I live.

As for funfetti cake, I've never heard of that Twinkies, haven't seen those either, but it's possible that somewhere like USA foods may import them and sell through their website, but we don't have them available here generally.

We do have things that are not widely available in the US though, Meat Pies, Sausage Rolls, Vegemite, Cherry Ripes, Tim Tams, some great beers and wines, to name a few.

Its not just the USA though, that's part of the fun travelling, is having different foods that you don't normally get at home. My favourite place for different food is Switzerland, I love the Swiss food.

We have similar fast food restaurants, McDonalds, KFC, Hungry Jacks/Burger King but the food isn't the same as in the States! There is a chain called Taco Bill here although it is not as cheap $ as in America.

In terms of burgers, my favourite place for them in Australia is called Grill'd...love their burgers and fries but it is fairly expensive but all the ingredients are fresh and yummo (I actually prefer these burgers to the ones I had in America)

For all the lollies and dessert items it depends. There are a few places that sell USA imported lollies for a small premium but then there are cheap dollar type stores that have the Hershey's Chocolates, Twinkies, Reece Cups etc for under $5. In our supermarkets there are plenty of 'Australian' chocolates (M&Ms, Minties, KitKat, Smarties...are they all available in America?) but not the items otherwise said!

We have burgers, but there's something about the meat that goes into yours that we can't replicate here. We also have Taco Bells, and it's not necessarily that the US ones are better, it's just that because we can't get it exactly the same here, we miss it when we come home

No we don't get Twinkies or funfetti cake here at all. Not that I've seen anywhere any way.

Often I tell people there's no way I could live in the States, simply because I couldn't live on your food, but there are still those couple of little things that I'd like here

I forgot about Salt Water Taffy, but we have been able to buy that here from some of the specialty candy shops - my favourite is the Shrivers Salt Walter Taffy, it leaves the tourist salt water taffy for dead. My sister found some in Melbourne, at Third Drawer Down.

I also forgot that Diser's other than Australians or New Zealanders' may drop by - if you are from one of those far away lands, yes the beer is cold, but we don't drink Fosters! (as much as those advertising people in the States want you to believe we do).

So true! Ironically though, the very best meal I ate in Switzerland was in an Italian restaurant - best risotto I have ever tasted.

but I have to say the best steak that ever passed my lips was in a little restaurant in Gardiner, Wyoming ( just outside Yellowstone, NP) It was to die for!
