The 2010 Baltic Thread--Cruise Tips and Planning

Wow, looks like you guys are doing a lot of planning. We just booked this cruise and are reserving excursions now. The only one we wanted is already booked though (Tallin, spirits). See everyone on board.

This may have been asked before...
Does anyone know if there is anywhere in Dover or vicinity, where we can have a case of water shipped from to the ship?

More importantly are there any liquor stores in Dover? Do you guys have separate liquor stores or can you buy at grocery stores?

I'm not sure they'd deliver to the port but there is a big Tesco supermarket just on the edge of Dover. They'd have everything you need. We do have separate off licence stores for alcohol which you'd find in the town itself but supermarkets/ grocery stores sell it too. I've just googled it and there is a Morissons, Somerfield and couple of CostCutters (probably corner stores) in the town itself too.

Just remember that on a Sunday, the grocery stores will not be open until 10am, so you may prefer to buy your liquor the night before. All supermarkets sell alcohol, but depending on your poison, it may be cheaper to buy duty free on your way into the UK. There are also separate off licences which have a wider range of wines, but beer & spirits is usually the same as the supermarket.

Not sure there will be - although all supermarkets do a home delivery service, it generally requires you to set up an account with a fixed address & not sure if the port would work! As you are on the coach you can always buy & bring, or alternatively PM if you want & I can make the purchase & load it on the coach & you can reimburse me. Obviously you'll have to carry it on!

Here's an example of the binder/album we got. You also got plastic sleeves to insert photos or whatever into the binder. Unfortunately, our kids didn't feel like taking them on excursions. It was hot and we already had enough to carry. They are nice keepsakes though. Oh, and I put the pictures my daughter took with her camera into the plastic sleeves.

The medallion in the middle of the cover is what they got at the end of the cruise.

We are just back from the transatlantic and Med.

The journal/book the kids got on the MED is nowhere near as nice as the previous ones. It is a little paper booklet with pages of word searches/crosswords, etc. There was one for younger children and a different (slightly harder games) for older children. Very small.

The transatlantic gift (mini suitcase/box stamped with ports) was very cute :)

Sorry it wasn't the same one. :confused3
Even though you didn't get one, I did like the min suitcase.

Thanks Celestine, you're so nice to offer to do that! We just might have to take you up on that offer!

The little mini suitcase is so cute. We got 2 because we had 2 cabins. But, on the last night there were people throwing them out/giving them away because they didn't want to have to drag it home or worry about fitting it in luggage, so we ended up with an extra as did another of my DIS friends :)

Oh boy! DD and I are travelling home by train following the first Baltic cruise. When I tell her that people are throwing things away she`ll have me searching the ship!

You are killing me!:rotfl2: I'm glad that you are in our St Pete. excursion. Now I have to make sure you sign up for the Boat ride at night with the chocolate and Vodka!

Andrew (or any one else who is willing to comment)

Looking for tour company in London. Four adults who would prefer a guided day tour rather than on your own. Dad's words were "the royal tour." :rotfl2: Car, van, or tour bus to pick us up from our B&B, provide transportation and guides for the day. No hassle with tubes and trying to arrange for a guided tour after arriving at the attraction.

Thank you so much.

Heidi

I'm still thinking about it - hmmmm vodka & chocolate, can those 2 things really be beat :rotfl:

I haven't been able to book my train tickets either through www.thetrainline.com or through Southeastern's website with a U.S. credit card. If anyone knows of a website where this can be done, I'd appreciate hearing about it! Thanks.

just a tip, if you are flying in the day of the cruise. We have found it is cheaper and will be less stressful with the kids to do a one-way rental car from Stansted airport to Dover. We have an international gps so it won't be hard to drive. With 2 little ones it would be too much to deal with changing trains, etc. with all the luggage.

That's a good tip even if your not flying in that day.

We are flying in a couple days before, but will be picking up a car from National to drive to the port. Not only was teh price 'right', but it is allowing us to stop at Leeds castle and hit a grocery store on the way to the port, allowing us to pick up most of the baby supplies that we will need in Europe, rather than paying excess baggage fees to ship it all over with us.
