The 2008 Flower Power Concert Series Review/Info Thread

Glad to hear Tony Orlando puts on a good show. We will in Epcot later next week and we are really looking forward to seeing him.

We saw Starship and The Ventures on our last trip. Starship was excellent and the vocals by Stephanie were a big hit with DD 14. We saw the show the next night as well so DD 14 could hear more. At the end of the show we talked with Stephanie and found she was very personable. I didn't expect a Grace Slick wannabe because I wasn't a big Grace Slick fan to begin with. The last night of our trip we saw The Ventures which was an amazing show. These men are some the greatest guitar players I have ever seen. I was a little young to enjoy their music the first time around so I'm glad I made the 3rd trip to Epcot to see them.

... Hearing the Happenings do "See You in September", one of my favorites from the 1960's, was a moment not to be missed! ...

I was there for the Happenings and they mentioned they released the song in 1966. I remember this song from the late 50s and was confused until I checked the web and found out the Tymes did the song in 1958.

So, do remember the song from the Happenings or from the Tymes?;)

BTW, they did two different sets. One set singing the Beach Boys songs and one singing "The Four Seasons" songs.

Hi Ed - It was definitely the Happenings for me. I was in college from 1965-69 and that song was very sentimental as it reminded me of seeing my friends again after summer vacation.

That's one of the great things about the Flower Power concerts - I can now tell my grandkids "I saw the Happenings sing See You in September" or "I saw Jose Feliciano sing Light My Fire", or "I saw the Ventures play Walk Don't Run". Great memories for a lifetime - thanks to Disney!

I wasn't aware the Tymes charted anything until 1963 with their big hit, So Much in Love.

I think you might be remembering the Tempos out of Pittsburgh, who scored #23 on Billboard charts in 1959.

I caught Gary Puckett's 8:15 show tonight. He really does not sound good - his voice is shot. He had his daughter come out and sing a song. Then she came back out and they sang "Young Girl" together which totally creeped me out. That's not really the song you sing with your daughter.:scared1:

Stopped by to see Gary tonite, because one must always support the homies! Fortunately, his daughter was not there so we were spared the thoughts that carlyle688 mentioned above...

We've seen Gary for many years and I thought his voice was still better than when he recorded all the hits with the Union Gap!

He did most of my favorites during the first set, but we stayed for the second set because we wanted to...

Might not make it for the Cowsills but I am very curious to hear them...

I can't wait for the Cowsills tomorrow. I had wanted to see them since 1968 and I finally got my chance last October when a friend and I drove 8 hours to Fayetteville to the Original Idols Tour. They can still harmonize just as good as they did 40 years ago. There's only three of them left (Bob, Paul and Susan) since John plays with the Beach Boys, and Barry and Bill have passed away. I believe that Bob's son is now playing keyboards with them. I plan to be there for all 9 shows.

You're being very kind with your remarks about his voice.

At Friday nights 2nd show, I left after the first song to browse wines in Germany because I was afraid his singing would make my ears bleed.

My wife stuck it out but we think she'll be fine after some therapy.

Talked to some friends who caught the early show at which he did a Veterans Day tribute with a song they said was so morbid and such a downer that people were walking out.

I saw all nine Cowsills shows. They were amazing. And they are all just about the nicest people I have ever met. I have nothing bad to say about them. And anyone who knows me knows that hardly ever happens. :rotfl2:

Saw two of Tony Orlando's shows last night. Excellent. He's great, the band is great, the music is great. Again, no complaints from me. ;)

I saw Tony Orlando's 5:45 show today(5/30). He was great!!! My mother and I started waving around yellow streamers when he sang Tie a Yellow Ribbon, and he called me up to the stage! How cool is that!!!!

We came into the show late, so we missed that it was his daughter, but that's what we assumed and I was also creeped out by them singing Young Girl together. It was pretty gross, and I can sing his songs better than he can now...still fun to see him tho. Seemed to be enjoying himself. I like catching whatever we can while we're there. We also caught the Cowsills on Sunday or Monday at 5:45, and while I enjoyed the music and learned a little more about the group, I was really annoyed by one of the brothers, the taller one, Bob maybe - it seemed like he was drunk, arguing with his siblings and saying entirely random, unimportant things the whole show. His sister had to remind him that it wasn't a 70 minute show in the middle of his rambling, and the other brother told us that they would stop talking..."No we won't!" I seriously wanted to smack him. The music was fine tho, and we stayed through the show. Question for Cowsills fans - did they do the original recording of Hair or was that just for the show? They weren't really explaining a lot (like I said, mostly random thoughts, and bitterness at their failed early career) so I wasn't sure but it did sound a lot like the released version.

Oh no, that's just Paul's personality. He's just a little crazy. And the on stage banter is just your average family joking around. They really do get along with each other and they are all the nicest people on the planet. I've never met a nicer bunch of people. And they appreciate their fans -- which I can't say for a lot of other musicians I've met.

I'm thinking of heading out there to see Tony Orlando again today.

Just my personal wrap-up:

We attended F&G on 40 different days and attended 71 concerts.

Favorites: Guess Who & Starship

Sentimental Favorites: Paul Revere, Peter Noone, Peter & Gordon, Arlo Guthrie, Davey Jones & the Nelsons (borderline).

Didn't See: 5th Dimension (Weather) & Petula Clark ( One teeth gnashing concert last year was enough)

Most musically gifted and diverse: Jose Feliciano

Most Pleasant Surprise: Searchers

Biggest Disappointments: Jay Black (Awful), Happenings (Nothing Special), & Ventures (Capable enough musicians, but the music is just un-remarkable)

Cowsills - Pretty talented but too much chatter, and the one brother was goofy to the point of being distracting.

Tony Orlando - Should actually be called Tony Orlando's Band since he doesn't do much singing. But he's blessed with some talented musicians/vocalists so you get some very good music.

Past their "Sell By" dates: Rob Grill, B.J. Thomas, Tokens, Felix Cavaliere, & Gary Pucket (Dreadfully bad)

Thanks to those of you who reviewed the shows! I was there to hear Petula Clark (I agree - she looks better than she sounds), The Happennings, Peter and Gordon, and Starship.

Will you be reviewing the Sounds Like Summer concerts, too? I'll be back the last weekend in June to catch the Eagles and ABBA groups. :woohoo:

Hi Nancy - this thread probably won't work for reviewing the Sounds Like Summer concerts. Feel free to start your own thread for that purpose. If I can do it anyone can!

Dave - I think a local needs to start that thread. I'm just a tourist! :teeth:
