The 2008 Flower Power Concert Series Review/Info Thread

carlyle688- I am so sorry you missed the Happenings! They really had an entertaining show, and to be honest, I was very happily surprised! I was also very surprised by the number of locals that had been to all their shows! Hope they come back next year!

I had to pass on Peter & Gordon... from the parking lot to American Gardens was just too far to walk!

Any STARSHIP fans out there?

raise my hand...

I saw Starship when they were here in the fall. The girl who does Grace Slick's parts is excellent. I plan to be out there today at some point to see them.

Thought this was the appropriate place for this.

Carl Dixon, lead singer of the Guess Who was critically injured in an auto accident in Australia on April 14.

He's in critical but stable condition in hospital with broken bones and other injuries.

If you wish, go to www.carldixon.com and sign the guest book. His wife Betty has expressed her gratitude for the support and says she will be reading every message to Carl during his recovery.

I saw Mickey Thomas on 4/19,at the 5:45 show. I was not impressed, nor did I see the aufience really enthralled at all. In fact,I saw close to a dozen people leave during the show. I thought the girl singer was trying too hard to be Grace Slick.

Just a different take as a fan of Starship. Considering that they get a standing O at the end of every show would suggest the audience is pretty enthralled.

It's safe to say that I've never been to a single show at this theater that people didn't walk out of. Folks have dinner reservations and want a spot for Illuminations, whatever. And of course some don't like the act.

As for the Grace Slick thing, I would hope that any group that performs this music would try to reproduce the original sound. You could say that Peter Noone's group (none of whom are original) are trying too hard to be Hermits.

Not meant as argumentative, just my viewpoint.

I was enthralled. I saw them 3 nights out of 5. I think Stephanie does a great job.

Does anyone have any updates on Carl Dixon? Last I heard he was still hospitalized.

I saw The Happennings, Peter and Gordon, and Starship...twice - once with carlyle688! I especially enjoyed Starship, as did the audiences I was in.

I can understand different viewpoints. It's just that that show was the first time I had seen ANYONE walk out on a show in all the shows I have seen there.

Carl's wife Betty posted yesterday that Carl came out of his coma and was taken off machine assisted breathing.

She said his first words were "I love you" and "Did the soundtrack come out alright?"

A long road ahead but he's apparently out of danger.

Otter49, that is great news about Carl. Thanks for the update.

I saw the Ventures tonight. They sounded pretty good. But all their songs sounded the same to me so I was getting kind of bored by the end. I left after the first show.

I went to the Starship concert 4/23 for their final appearance. I've always been a fan, and without doing a lot of research, I don't think I have ever missed an EPCOT visit by the band.

Same members as last time- Stephanie Calvert is a great addition taking over Grace's vocal harmonies, and giving Mickey's voice a little break too from all those high leads.

The only thing that disappointed me was that they didn't do some of my favorite Starship cuts like Winds of Change and Wild Again. But they did do a new song...

Also, Stephanie did White Rabbit and Somebody to Love every set- neither of which are really Starship hits! I know, I know, I'm nit picking... However, I sat behind a group of people who donned rabbit noses and ears for the Rabbit and that made me chuckle and they had fun too!

I only posted this pic to show that the best drummers bring their own drums! Darrell (Pelican) Verdusco has a unique style and decided not to use the house drums this time!

I was also disappointed that my work schedule couldn't be adjusted so I could have been there a few more nights. Geeze, now I'll have to wait until the fall! At least that will give me some time to work on Mickey about adding those two favorite Starship tunes back into the sets!

I didn't see anyone walk out, I was up front and too busy to even care... If you're not a fan, go ahead- GET OUT!

flyinglizard, those are some really good pictures. I think I may have been sitting near you. I came in right before the 8:15 show started and I sat at the very end of the first row on the left side.

I think some of the people leaving are running out to get back in line. They leave during the last song so they can get their spot in line before the whole theater lets out.

A 4:30 Off Kilter show folllowed by The Grass Roots at 5:45 followed by another Off Kilter show at 6:30....Life doesn't get any better than this. :woohoo:

I was really impressed with the Grass Roots and forgot that they had so many hits.

We were walking by the ampitheater as the Happenings were singing Sweet Caroline and joined in(rather loudly as we continued walking) as they were singing the chorus. It's funny, what you will do in front of strangers. I got a few strange looks as I couldn't sing a note on key if my life depended on it.:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Ventures

I'll give them their due - they had fans there and got a partial standing O (for reasons that escape me). I mean, they were competent enough and made their songs sound like their songs, but I guess for me, I realized how unremarkable their music is.

All in all, pretty boring. And I'm at the age I have to be more careful of what I do with 30 minute chunks of my life.

One more of Mick and Stephanie.

Sorry for the quality, but here's a newer Starship song.

Otter39- So great to see some Otterpics back on the boards! Thanks for the link, they didn't do that one the night I was there, but I enjoyed the new song. Seemed a little rough, but I'm sure they will smooth it out by the Fall. Once I got into YouTube, I played the two extinct videos of White Rabbit- the one on the Smothers Brothers from 1967 and then the other one from 1969 at Woodstock... apparently 1968 was not a good year for Gracie!

carlyle688- Sorry I missed you the other night but if you sat in the first row, you missed the "bunny ears" in the crowd! Nothing there for me until the Searchers come to town, but I'll definitely be there for the Tokens- probably two nights! Looking forward to seeing them again!

Flying Lizard - Your comment makes me think I should perhaps take that video down. Yes, it sounds a little rough but it was anything but rough in person.

Perhaps I'm doing them an injustice with that vid. What do you think?

Otter49- NO, don't do that! I would have never heard the song without that link. I'm kinda biased, I like everything Starship does...

I'm going to ask Mickey's wife if they are planning on putting "Set the Night to Music" on a new cd.

Starship played "Set the Night to Music" last year at the Food and Wine Festival. They only played it during the 7pm show the day I saw them,it seems they only play it occasionally as I didn't hear it this year.
