The 2008 Flower Power Concert Series Review/Info Thread

My parents will be there for davy jones, do you have to pay extra to see these acts or is it just first come, first seat type thing?

All concerts are free and are first come first seat as you say.A line forms to the right of the theater before the show begins. The popularity of the group affects the line and how long you have to wait. The first show at 5:45 is pretty much always going to be the most crowded as for the more popular groups there will be people in line 2-3 hours before the show. The 7pm and 8:15 show will still have long lines but if you want to sit up close you wont have to be in line for hours, just get there 45 min to an hour before the show time for the last 2 shows and you should get pretty up close seats. The last show usually has the smallest crowds.Davy Jones should definitely have a big crowd.I've never gotten to see him so i can't tell you for sure.

I remember last year there were people in line at 2:00 for Davy Jones. He is one of the most popular acts.

Starship

Actually, I should have uploaded this one.

A great newer song with Mick playing guitar.

I love, love, love that song!!!

Saw B.J. Thomas last night. His voice still sounds great but he's never been one of my favorites so I only went to one show.

We saw The Ventures Saturday at 5:45 and they were awesome! I grew up listening to them (I am in my 30's) and I thought they sounded great.

I saw Davy Jones twice last year and he was great, got really good seats the second time, a row or two behind the first few rows that were roped off. I grew up watching "The Monkees" so that was a thrill. It's a fun show and I recommend it to everyone.

I also saw a little of the Nelsons and they were pretty good too.

What a terrific surprise these guys were!!

They're gone after tonight so if you have the chance, give them a listen.

Only four band members but killer good sound. They delivered their own hits perfectly but absolutely killed on some music from other artists.

"Twist and Shout", Bruce Springsteen's "7 Nights to Rock". And knocked it out of the park with Roy Orbison's "Running Scared".

Picture two and a half standing ovations.

They do mix their sets up a little.

I did not care for the Searchers. I only saw part of one show. Maybe I caught them during a bad time.

Saw the Tokens last night - two shows. They were a lot of fun - I enjoyed them. I'm going back to see them again tomorrow.

Ventures, Searchers, Tokens...I've never heard of any of those groups! But Davy Jones IS a cutie....still!

Went to see the Tokens tonite... always an enjoyable show and lots of fun! Besides doing their big hit (every set), "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", they also did "Only in my Dreams" from their most recent CD and a personal favorite of mine...

Brothers Phil and Mitch Margo- are the original members of the Tokens...

Mitch picks up most of the vocal leads now...

Jay Leslie plays both the soprano and tenor sax- at the same time! Although not an original member, he really adds to the great show!

I always see the Tokens when they come to town and as always, they did not disappoint!

Had an excellent time at WDW from April 15-26. I caught all the Flower Power acts one or more times - here are some reviews.

The Happenings - Only got to see one show - the 5:45pm performance on Wednesday. The theater was about 1/2 full, so I was able to walk in and get a decent seat 5 minutes before showtime. My feelings about the show are mixed. I thought that when they performed their three big hits they were fabulous - sounded great and did a terrific job of reproducing the "original" sound of each song. Hearing the Happenings do "See You in September", one of my favorites from the 1960's, was a moment not to be missed! For most of the rest of the show they performed hits by other artists, especially the Beach Boys. They did a nice job, but that part of the performance didn't really grab me. Maybe I was jaded because I had seen the Beach Boys perform the same songs on the same stage in the past. All in all a nice, enjoyable show - I'd give them a 6 on a 1-10 scale.

Peter and Gordon - We saw Peter and Gordon at 2007 Flower Power and liked them a lot, so we were happy to see them back and partially chose these dates for our vacation in order to see P & G - along with the Ventures. Due to a late arrival by my friend Christine, we missed the first night's performances - a disappointment but those things happen on vacation. We saw all three shows on Friday night and were not disappointed. Peter and Gordon had some very big hits and sounded just fine to me as they sang most of them. They even took requests from the audience a couple times - something I had never seen happen at Flower Power before. The Friday crowds were good but the theater wasn't full for any of the shows. I give Peter and Gordon a rating of 8 - we liked them a lot and hope they return again.

Starship - We saw the 5:45pm and 7:00pm Starship shows on Saturday, their first night. There were good crowds for both shows - but neither was full. It was obvious that a lot of big Starship fans were present - many enthusiastic people. I wasn't really that familiar with Starship other than their big hit "We Built this City". They mixed in some Jefferson Airplane hits - which were well done but somehow did not really grab me. They sounded very good on "We Built this City", which was terrific. We went away satisfied but not needing to see additional shows. I'll give them a rating of 6 out of 10, but should note that the reaction from the crowd was very enthusiastic so lots of people liked them better than I.

The Ventures - This was The Ventures first Disney appearance and we chose these dates for our vacation mostly to see them and Peter and Gordon. I remembered their great hits from the 60's like "Walk, Don't Run" and suspected that this might be a group that I would really like. Boy, was I right. The Ventures put on an electrifying, fantastic, wonderful, rocking show that blew me, and pretty much the rest of the crowd, away. I have never enjoyed Flower Power (or Eat to the Beat) concerts as much as The Ventures performances. They played Walk Don't Run, Pipeline, Hawaii Five-O, Driving Guitars and several other hits. We attended all nine shows over the three nights and loved every one. They ended each show with "Wipeout" and as far as I as concerned they could have kept on playing forever. About halfway through the fourth show it hit me that I was in the presence of greatness. These have to be some of the best guitar players in the country. Could they possibly have played better 40 years ago? I doubt it. The first night they were joined on Wipeout by guitarist Jeff Cook of the group Alabama and for one show by George Terry, who was introduced as "Eric Clapton's lead guitarist". The Venture's crowds were good all three nights but only the first show on Saturday appeared as though it was full. The crowd reaction was terrific as there were enthusiastic standing ovations at every single show. Disney seemed to take note as they had people specifically filming the crowd reaction at a couple of the later performances. The Ventures seemed genuinely pleased with the crowd reaction and Bob Spalding commented more than once "we'll have to come back next year". I sure hope they do because as you may have guessed, we loved the Ventures - 10 of 10. If you ever get the chance to see them perform - go out of your way to be there. It will be worth it!

It was a great trip!

I saw Davy Jones on Sunday - 8:15 show. It was pretty much the exact same show - and jokes - he did last year. But he's still entertaining - and has a LOT of energy.

Just a heads up - Jose Feliciano performs this Friday and Saturday.

Considering we almost didn't go see him last year because "Light My Fire" & the Christmas song were the only music we could think of - well Wow!!

Went to four concerts and never heard the same song twice, except for bits and pieces of Fire. Country, Rock, Jazz, Classical, Spanish, Bluegrass, R&B - you name it.

The man is a virtuoso in every respect.

For those of you following this (different topic), and some of you are because I've received some pms - here's a letter posted on his website from a couple of days ago from Carl Dixon, lead singer of the Guess Who, following his near fatal car accident in Australia.

Monday May 12, 2008

Dear friends.

First, thank you for being my friends. It’s almost a month since my car crash and this has been both the hardest time of my life and the most inspiring. The many injuries which I sustained are a huge challenge to overcome. I'm not allowed to stand on my broken legs or feet for a few more weeks. I'm writing this message with a pen in my left hand because my right hand and forearm were broken. Four days ago I had surgery to remove my very damaged and blinded right eye and to prepare the socket for a prosthetic. These are just some of the difficulties I face each day.

The inspiration? That comes in large part from every one of you. Whether you believe it or not, I’m here to tell you that being the recipient of all of this love, positivity, and good wishes has worked for me. Betty reads to me daily the messages that we receive and daily I'm moved to tears. Whether it’s a long time loyal friend or a fan whom I’ve never met, the messages we are getting are sweet and powerful. Everyone of you is helping my recovery so I thank each of you with a place in my heart.

Some of you expect and are entitled to a personal reply. Don’t be discouraged. When my hands are healed and I have access to a computer I’ll start.

Love and peace to you all, Carl.

Otter49, thanks for the Carl Dixon update.

DH and I are taking my 87-year-old MIL to see Jose on Saturday. DH and I saw him last year and were very surprised at how much we enjoyed it.

Are you taking her to hear Off Kilter, too? :goodvibes

Saw the Tokens last Thursday...all three shows! I thought they did a great job. Jazzy Jay can play the Sax!!! :D He plays both instruments during "Candita"(sp). Excellent!

I've been a fan of the Young Rascals, later just the Rascals and then finally Felix Cavaliere and the Rascals, for a long time. The band I played in for many years did all their hits including my favorite from 1969... "SEE"!

When Felix is in town, I will be there, even if I have to work! We went over to EPCOT tonite to see Felix and his Rascals... We had dinner at the American Pavilion... a small price to pay to see Felix!

We missed the first set, and so we missed them perform Groovin' and probably the first performance of Good Lovin'. I didn't hear them do Midnight Hour and maybe they didn't do it. It never charted but it was another one of my favorites.

felix2.jpg

Felix at the mighty Hammond B-3, just like the old days! They did some of the lesser known hits that I like: You Better Run, I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore, Come On Up, Mustang Sally and of course the biggies: Good Lovin', I've Been Lonely Too Long, A Girl Like You, How Can I be Sure, Beautiful Morning and People Got to be Free. I sat there and sang all my old back up vocal parts!

felix3.jpg

They also did a couple medleys of songs from the golden days that they never recorded. It was just good old time Rock n Roll.

During the last set, it began to rain a little and the few people who weren't under cover, scurried to get out of the weather. I really enjoyed the concert, as always, and when we got home, we had a 1/4 inch of rain in the gauges! Even though they didn't do "SEE'... It was a very good night!

Next report from the Gary Puckett show...

Wow, great pics. I was there for Tony Orlando last year. He was great. I will be there for Tony Orlando this year. Can't wait to see how good he looks after the weight loss. He always puts on a good show. Will post some pics when I get back this time.
