Thanksgiving 2007!!!

Frank-

You are alright, my good man.

And, my compliments to USC for the lickin' it put on those Michigan cry babies!

I think that you are right about USC being #1 at the start of next year.

I can't believe that Ohio State ended up #2 in the final polls. There is no way that they deserve to be there over LSU and USC after that pathetic performance on Monday.

I am sad that college football is over for the year, but at least we still have the NFL playoffs!

TCD

I am having college football withdrawl as well:sad1: - and since you mentioned the NFL, and I have no team in LA (I gave up on the Rams when that mean old lady moved them away), I have become a Saint's fan, of course due to Reggie Bush. Which is weird because I grew up hating the Niners, Falcons and Saints (the old NFC West Division) and now I am rooting for the Saint's. Hopefully they will do well and i won't be in my house with a paper bag on my face.

OK, OK, W is right, 10 posts in one day is a bit much. But, did anyone count how many times W posted yesterday?

Anyway, I'll address more than one thing in this post (out of fairness to W):

W- Have a great time in N.O. this weekend!

Frank- OK, I'll pull for the Saints this weekend, too.

Lampy- Go Bears! So if things go the right way, it will be Da Bears and the Saints next week. Nice!

All- I'll be heading out a little later for the weekend too. We're going camping at WDW again! The weather here in Fla. is amazing. Sunny with lows in the 60's and highs around 80 for the weekend. It is January!

Talk to you all next week!

I wish we had that weather here in California this weekend, as I am going on a 3 day cruise to Ensenada this weekend on Carnival (not my idea, but we are going for my cousin's 40th birthday, so it will be fun:banana:) . We had highs this week of mid-80's to 89 degrees. Now there is a huge cold snap with lows about 30 (just in time for me to get on the boat:confused3 ). Oh well, I will have to stay inside so it gives me a great excuse to watch the games and have a few at Pappas and Beers or Husong's :drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1 . Have a nice weekend everyone - Go Saints:thumbsup2 !!!

Has anyone checked the airfares to Orlando for November 16th-24th?:scared: :scared1:

Just wanting to warn everyone now, so hopefully no one ends up canceling.:guilty: Give yourself time to absorb the shock.

Rob said yesterday, 'I'm rethinking the Thanksgiving cruise.' No, no please. I don't want to miss the Turkey Day reunion. I can't wait for another year to dine at Palo.

We'll make this work.

I bought my air the day it came out. I normally fly non-stop from LAX to MCO on American or Delta and routinely pay $250 to $280 per person. This year, the same cheapest flights were about $375 and the American flights were $800 per person:scared1: !!! Instead, I decided to go out of my way and book from Orange County (which is actually a whole lot closer for me than LAX) and fly into PBI (West Palm Beach) via a stop over in Atlanta. I hate stops on flights, especially with the kids, but I got these fares for $237 a piece and saved almost $600 total on the 5 of us. We get in later on Friday night so I am driving 1/3 of the way and sleeping in Port St. Lucie(sp), then will complete the drive in the morning. I am hoping it won't be to bad, but I just didn't want to pay so much for air, when air to Orlando has been so cheap for so many years (at least coming from LA).

Okay, there IS hope.

The airfares are dropping. I'm going to keep checking each day. Might as well check for a room at the Hyatt too.:)

Priscilla

We just booked our flights out of Kansas City for $222 pp on Midwest Airlines. These tickets are a whole lot cheaper than our tickets for last years Easter cruise! We paid around $350/pp for those.

Hi guys, I am finally getting a photo to share of our Dec 06 cruise.

cruise3_edited.jpg

Hey all, we dodged the snow Sunday and last night....have about an inch in the drive this morning and 10 miles east they have 14 and another 10 on the way today....
And airfare....Gary Chicago airport has 59.00 and 79.00 one ways almost everywhere they fly.....Orlando, Pheonix, vegas but you can only book 90 days out!

Bill- Great photos! Thanks for sharing! :thumbsup2

Lampy- DA BEARS! Congratulations. Also, glad to hear that you are not snowed in. I'm not so sure about my Gator buddy Grossman. He will have his hands full this weekend.

Willie- How was N.O.- it was rocking this weekend after the game, yes?

Had a great weekend camping at WDW. T-shirts and shorts all weekend-never had to put on a jacket. I am not rubbing it in though, we get our turn with the bad weather soon enough.

TCD

TCD, the weatherman says 5 degrees here tonight, but it will heat up to 17 tomorrow!! The forecast for Sunday is 30 and snow......those "aints" any good off the "carpet"? Congrats on your gators......

I'm baaaa---aaaack!

The cruise was fantastic!

The thing that I missed most (comparing to Disney) was the alternating dining rooms. On the Conquest, we had the same dining room every night. Our servers were fabulous - equal to Disney's!

The other thing that was not as good as Disney was our stateroom service. Now, I'm sure it was just our individual steward and not the entire ship's fault, though. And really, the only complaint was that he didn't make up the twin bed into a couch during the day and just left it as a bed all the time.

But he did much better than our DCL steward with keeping my cooler full of ice all the time. As well as our ice bucket even though we never used it. So I won't complain too much. My son loved the chocolate chip cookie with the smily face that he got at bedtime, too. Of course, the towel animals were there -- my son decided to save them all from day 1. So he had a line up of them on his bed. And we noticed that our steward would continously put them back together so they were all fresh each day - poor guy - having to recreate 6 towel animals by the last day - LOL!

Anyway....to the important things -- ok - on Disney, my dh and I were wandering around at midnight looking for something to do. On Carnival, the lounges were hopping, the deck parties bouncing, the piano bar crooning...way into the wee hours.

Since were were there on New Year's Eve - free champagne was handed out from the time of boarding until 1 AM. As midnight neared, servers were wandering the central atrium with two bottles in each hand - busy refilling glasses. It was the biggest party ever. There were hundreds of balloons in a net at the top of the atrium and the balloon drop was grand!

The CD was awesome in getting everyone involved. Carnival has the Red, White and Blue teams - you are assigned to a 'team' and all through the cruise you cheer on members of your team. On the deck party night, each team had a contest for longest conga line - and man, I swear -- it seemed that EVERYBODY was out there. It was the most fun I've ever had on a cruise. And the food was great - steak fajitas and Mexican food on the deck party night as it was the night before Cozumel.

Carnival's 24 hour pizza was quite good and this coming from a Chicagoan who will usually never even taste pizza outside of the city. Really - I had it at least 3 times and usually around 1 AM.

There was a deli with excellent sandwiches; best was the seafood grill with the best fish and chips, oyster stew, chowder - all very very good.

The food, in general, was excellent! I was pleasantly surprised about that. Room service menu was a bit more extensive I thought, with things like roast beef sandwich on a baguette; although my dd missed the chicken nuggets from DCL's menu.

There was a sushi bar, pasta bar, ice cream bar and grill (like DCL's) and the grill had much better burgers I thought - didn't try the hot dog. Fries were excellent.

The chocolate buffet was nothing compared to DCL's. But the midnight gala buffet was like nothing I have EVER seen - fabulous, incuding the desserts.

Surprisingly, with the number of people on board, the pools were never as crowded as DCL's and my son used the huge slide several times. One of the pools had a retractable sun roof which was great on the cooler nights as we headed back toward Galveston.

I know there was no Castaway Cay, but in Montego Bay we were the only ship docked. We took a cab right to Sunset Beach, an all inclusive resort. So I can compare this to CC - because basically it was quite similar. There were very few people there - easily many less than on CC at any one time. For $180, myself, dh and 4 kids (3 paid as adults) had a buffet breakfast, buffet lunch (awesome Jamaican jerk chicken and ribs), desserts, drinks - *including* alcohol. Have a very fond memory of sitting at the swim up bar chugging mudslides - LOL! There were several beaches here. My dh and ds and I headed for the one on the far left and along with us there were maybe 2 other families there. Since we were at the edge of the property, one side was bordered by large rocks as a kind of barricade and along these rocks were many tropical fish. My ds and I spent a lot of time with the masks checking out the beautiful fish.

There was also a water park here with slides and a lazy river - along with the swim up bar I mentioned, there was another pool on the other side of the bar with another swim up bar - and there was also another pool and hot tub.

I loved this place - it was awesome!

We had balcony rooms - wow! Just great - I'll never go back to an inside room. The cost of our two balcony rooms was less than the two inside rooms on Disney.

The beds were super comfortable with very smooth sheets and a soft down comforter. I loved that we had the use of robes in our room. We also got gift baskets of sample type things - lotions, razors, mints, facial cleansers, etc., which was really nice.

The bathrooms were not the split bathrooms like Disney has, but we had two staterooms; thus two bathrooms so that was ok.

There were more shops on the ship and visiting the casino after dinner became a nightly routine, but I didn't lose too badly and my sil won $300 on a 2 cent slot machine.

I missed the shows on DCL - they were MUCH better than the ones we saw on Carnival. We didn't go to all the shows. The magician was thumbs down. A comedian we saw was ok....the variety show was just ok. Very entertaining was the Legends show on the last night.

I missed the Disney theme since I love Disney! And I'm very glad I've sailed on DCL since it was a wonderful experience. But I would go back to Carnival, definitely, it was a great time!

I do want to comment on the hand wipes issue. The anti-bacterial agent in the wipes is effective on bacteria only and has NO effect whatever on viruses. Thus, people get a false sense of cleanliness when using wipes. Carnival stressed that the noro-virus is just that - a VIRUS and the only way of eradicating it is by handwashing with soap and water. Norovirus is spread from bathroom use and Carnival's public washrooms provided disposable door handle covers which I had never seen before.

Well, I hope I didn't blab on too much. I would definitely encourage any of you who haven't tried Carnival, esp if you like the contests and games and that type of thing, to give it a go. They really do go all out to get everyone involved and get the crowd going.

My son won the limbo contest, btw!

Kris :thumbsup2

Sounds like you had a wonderful time. It was nice to hear good things about Carnival, since sometimes it does get a pretty bad rap every once in a while. The Conquest is one of Carnivals newer ships isn't it?

Kris, thanks for posting a report!:)

Glad you all had a good time. It sounds as if a cruise is THE place to be for New Years.

Isn't the Carnival food wonderful? I think Carnival receives too much negative publicity as the 'party-crowd' ship, and not enough for how EXCEPTIONAL their food is. Their midnight buffet surpasses any that I've seen. I also appreciated 'freebies' (toothpaste, razors, etc.) Their corridors are wider too. Gee, just talking about this..anyone interested in taking a Carnival cruise before November? (We're only a 5-hour drive from Galveston. Willie, it's practically in your backyard!)

I just got back on Monday from my 3 day Carnival cruise to Ensenada. Although I can't compare it to DCL (because we haven't been yet), I can compare to the 3 trips I have taken on Royal Carribean. First, as was mentioned, I was suprised with the basket of goodies in the bathroom (nice touch) and the hallways did seem a bit larger. The food in the dining room was pretty good, but the lobster was overcooked. We did enjoy the 24 hour pizza station as well. The buffet food was just ok. I can say that the staff overall on Carnival was not close to how nice the staff was on all 3 of my RCCL trips. Especially the dining room staff on carnival was simply not good at all. Also, the shows were really bad on Carnival, and believe me, I was not expecting much. Overall, we had a good time and we had a nice group of 10 people, so we had fun no matter where we went. I would give Carnival a try again though, maybe on a newer boat.

My only real bad experience on board was the Art Auction:artist: where I dropped too much cash (never go to an auction when you have had a few:drinking1. Anyway, I found out some misrepresentations when I came home, and am not too happy - mostly at myself because I should know better. Anyway, we did have fun while there and it was a good lesson learned albeit an expensive one. I saw that they offer these auctions on DCL as well (same company on Carnival as on DCL), so I will make sure to be more careful. Anyone else out there had any good or bad experiences with the auctions on DCL?

Great photos, Bill. Your family looks great. Can you believe that it was Thanksgiving 2004 when you sailed with the Turkeys? Seems like last week. OK OK my old age is showing again. (Grandpa voice here-) Yep, I remember the good old days, when we used to sail on the Magic. Of course it was much better back in the old days!

Well, yes, TCD, the French Quarter was rockin with the Saints game in town. Everywhere you went, you were greeted with "Who Dat!" But the music festival we went to was a lot of fun, too. Heard some great "Beach Music" bands like Phins, Hannahs Reef, Latitude, Joe Bennett. Margaritaville was closed to the public Friday and Saturday night, anly festival attendees could enter, so it was a great party. I have a few good pics that I will post asap. We stayed at the Hotel St. Marie. A small, older property one half block off of Bourbon street and it was really nice to be able to hit the hotel for a nap, or change of clothes. The hotel was super. No complaints at all. Our room was near the courtyard, so we did not hear all the noise from the street side. Our friends were not as lucky, with a balcony room , they were up all night from noise.
It was 80 degrees and sunny Saturday afternoon, so I had to change from jeans to shorts and T shirt. They blocked off a section of Bourbon Street for Hannahs Reef to play, and it was a fun time.
One thing I noticed was how clean they are keeping the Quarter now. Every morning, it is completely cleaned up and shiny.(Well as shiny as possible for the Quarter!) And the people there seem to really appreciate tourists MUCH more than they used to. Every where we went, folks went out of their way to say thanks for coming to N.O. That was nice. I guess there is nothing like getting your teeth kicked in by a hurricane to make you appreciate where your living comes from.
The music festval would be much more fun if we had lots of friends with us. It was just 4 of us. But still fun.

And yes, Andrew, I did drink a Big A$% Beer or two. And a Hand Grenade. But it was a little too sweet.

Saw some great T shirt slogans. The best was this- "I stayed and rode out Hurricane Katrina, and all I got was this lousy T-shirt, a new Cadillac, new Nikes, and a plasma TV!"

My son won the limbo contest, btw!

Kris :thumbsup2

Props to your son! Way to represent! He must have gotten some tutoring from Lampy! ;) What type of hardware do they give out to contest winners on the Carnival ships (medal, trophy, key-chain, what?).

Thanks for the trip report. We have taken a few 3 day cruises on Carnival, but none in the last few years. Sounds like they have made some improvements in the food. The Carnival ships definitely have more of a party atmosphere. I'm not sure that I ever saw any of the shows on Carnival, but definitely spent a lot of time in the casinos and night clubs.

Anyone else out there had any good or bad experiences with the auctions on DCL?

Hmmm, art auctions? :scratchin

Not really my cup of tea. I'm not sure that this fits in with the Turkey Day Gang.

Yes, there are art auctions on DCL, but I was too busy doing more important stuff to bother with that.

Frank- you need to be thinking about drinking and having fun, not bidding on a mickey mouse statue.

Kelli sure collected a lot of beads at New Orleans. I hardly got any. I dunno how she does that!:confused3

Maybe by dancing in the go-go cage at Utopia during the pub crawl?
