Thank You, Kevin, for Your Words on the Sea World Tragedy

They are old news argumentative posts and i'm not going to bring them up now - perhaps I was unlucky and just found the posts which went sour that day:confused3 All I can say is people on ALL INTERNET chat boards should remember that people dont always come accross the way they want to when writing it down

Getting back on subject .... i'm glad alot of you feel that it should be remembered that these are wild animals and caged for our entertainment. For some reason I got the impression most people on this board were up for putting the whale down - dont know why I thought that.:confused3

That's interesting and a bit odd. I wonder what gave you that thought.

I know - i cant even remember why or what gave me that impression:confused3 - but i dont now so thats what matters:thumbsup2

On a side note - i've only just listened to this weeks podcast and what Kevin said - i'm another 1 that agree's 100%.

I suppose OCEA (the report writers that kevin mentioned) will now be getting reviewed!

You won't get any grief from me.

There is a great resource from a great organization on the subject.

http://www.wspa-usa.org/pages/2780_report_exposes_suffering_at_whale_and_dolphin_attractions.cfm

I should disclose that I know several folks with this organization because of a non-profit I help with so understand I am hardly neutral on the subject.

Thanks for the resource. I am also shocked that nobody has mentioned the documentary "The Cove" yet.

Nikki - the good thing about flaming on the boards is that it can't burn you. Share away!

Similar to most, I'm on board with what has been said. While I don't have a problem with training animals and captivity, I also think the whale holds zero blame in this incident. I think the rest has been sufficiently covered :thumbsup2

What threads have you seen that type of thing on? :confused3

You're joking right? I've seen you flame people yourself! A couple of weeks ago someone asked about disradio and it not being mentioned on the podcast at first and you were the first to jump all over them. That person did not deserve that just because he/she was asking what was going to happen and mixed up Kevin's name.

I think that for the most part the podcast cruise boards are a great place to voice your opinion. I think that there is flaming when people attack another person. For example, you mention Paul in the thread regarding DisRadio. The only reason Paul jumped in there was because someone was jumping on Kevin, like it was his fault. I think this is a very protective group. You can have different opinions, disagree, just be nice because we're friends. At least that is how I see this board. :)

I share the same feelings as Kevin does (nice to be back on the same page after the last discussion :goodvibes). I'm have no problem with zoos or aquariums keeping animals but they are animals. When you take a wild animal and tame it in any environment you are taking a calculated risk. Like with any risk sometimes the odds swing to the undesirable ourcome.

Even when only human beings are involved sometimes all the precautions in the world don't stop an injury or death. Whether the ultimate result of the inquiry into the death is negligence on Sea World's part, negligence on the trainer's part, or a combination of the two, the whale was just doing what whales sometimes do. Procedures should be tweeked, just like they were after the monorail accident, to try and prevent another incident but as long as you are putting your life in the hands of an animal you have to be aware of the danger.

I think you are being a bit liberal with the term Flame, but I guess that is open to opinion. Not to mention I think he quoted Nicole on that comment, asking her. She may take that a little different than you, since he was talking directly to her.

I do agree that nothing should happen to the whale. This was just a tragic accident. Trainers were not allowed in the water with this whale. Her hair was tied back like it was suppose to be. All the rules are in place. Something just went wrong. It was nobodies fault. It is done, it is over and other than giving support to the family, we can change nothing by arguing over it. Right away the parents said they did not want anything bad to happen to the whale. They did not put blame on anyone or thing. Our son was killed in a car accident in 1991.(went off a gravel road and flipped) There were 5 kids in the car. He was the driver and the only one killed. One of the other passengers was hurt, but recovered fully. The rest of them were fine. We had a lot of moments when we said "if only", but it didn't change the outcome. He was 16 at the time and to this day we really have no idea what caused the accident. Were they playing music, messing around, we have no idea and will never know for sure, but we never blamed anyone, and none of the parents ever blamed us. It was just a horrible accident. Sea World does more good then bad for these animals. With out places like this a lot more animals would not survive.

Thanks for that great story and getting us back to reality about what really matters. Nothing I can say will cover the pain you must feel every day. God Bless you for being so strong! You've left me speechless.....

Ok...let's nip this in the bud.

The OP who posted the Dis Radio thread suggested that he used my name as a way of getting everyone's attention.

That was not a mix up.

There is a way to have a discussion without pointing fingers and making accusations.

I'm going to ask that this conversation return to being a friendly conversation or the thread will be closed.

The intent of my posting this was not to start a debate about flaming threads or anything of that nature. I was merely agreeing with a comment made by a podcaster on the show. If it turns into a heated debate or "he said, she said," I'd just prefer that it be closed.

I almost my boyfriend in a severe car crash a few years ago. He was the passenger in a SUV that lost control. It rolled over several lanes of traffic on the Garden State Parkway and landed in a ditch. Two other passengers were ejected from the vehicle; one lost her life instantly while the other landed in a tree. Sean was trapped in the vehicle and has permanent shoulder damage. The doctors said his surviving the crash was absolutely miraculous. As a result, I am no stranger to tragedy. I feel for the family and co-workers of this employee. I also feel for the whale and, again, am happy that he will be able to live out his life peacefully at Sea World.

After I posted my comment to launchpad, I thought about it and then I regretted it and I want to apologize to him and to Nikki who started this thread and the othern posters here. It was inapproriate and out of line of me.

No need to apologize dizneedoll, we just have a different interpretation of "flaming" is all, no big deal. I never flame another DISers opinion until they get personal. I get all fired up when I perceive someone to be attacking my friends, or as is more often the case, taking their generosity and kindness for granted. It drives me nuts when people "look a gift horse in the mouth" so to speak. I can be abrasive at times so I apologize for that. I'm very protective of the people I care about. :flower3: Sorry this thread got off track Kevin, sometimes you have to reel me in! :thumbsup2

Huh, you've never protected me....noted :rolleyes1

I've always thought this was a wise observation...

It is of interest to note that while some dolphins are reported to have learned English -- up to fifty words used in correct context -- no human being has been reported to have learned dolphinese.
