TGM Poster Rips HH

I won't copy the post here so as to not to violate TGM's policy.

But, suffice it to say that a poster on the TGM DVC forum absolutely ripped Disney's HH Resort, both the facilities and the location (it was their first post).

To be honest, HH is one of the few resorts I recall that very rarely has anything negative posted here on the Disboards (especially to that degree).

As a result, we are very much looking forward to going to HH in July 07. Am I missing something negative about the place? (the distance from the actual beach doesn't bother us).

Also, I know July is busy, and I have to book at the 7-month window, but it's a non-holiday week and we're only interested in Sun-Thurs nights, the lower point nights. Do I have a chance? (1BR)

Just remember, reviews are so subjective. What you will love, I might not.
Take that review with a grain of salt and see for yourself if you like HH.

We don't like it at all. HH Resort not on the beach???? Not what we like at all. No on site dining other than grab/fried poolside food??? Again another strike against the resort for US, others are happy having the options a short walk away. We find the main pool too small as well.

We greatly prefer VB for our beach trips. It has all of the things we look for in a BEACH destination.

Now the review you spoke of..... first post and they are ripping a resort.... .

All of the DVC are very good, some just fit your needs better than others. Go and enjoy your trip and post when you return. Who knows it may be YOUR families perfect resort like VB is for us.

We only stayed there once several years ago for a couple nights. We paid cash for the 2BR unit and, when we checked out, we left a list of complaints at the front desk. Our reason for doing so was an effort to improve the resort. About a month later, my wife got a phone call and spoke with the person who, at that time, was in charge of the DVC HH resort. If I recall, they spoke for nearly half an hour about our impressions of the resort. He said that he would bring up our concerns at the next quarterly meeting of all of the DVC resorts. When we returned to DVC HH a year later (not to stay, but simply to visit), we were pleased to see that at least a couple of our concerns had been addressed.

I'm not trying to disuade you or anyone else from staying at DVC HH. It is a beautiful resort. It is unfortunate that the resort is located so far away from the ocean and that (at the time of our visit) the shuttle between the resort and the ocean stops running at dinnertime. That was our biggest complaint. The parking is quite limited at the resort (although much improved by the removal of the concrete wheel stops that made it tough to fit a minivan into the spaces).

After our first trip to DVC HH, my wife stated categorically that we would never stay there again. Of course we probably would have never stayed anywhere on Hilton Head Island as there was not real reason for us to do so (besides the DVC resort located there). We just wanted to try out the place on our way to Florida. She has since softened her stance, but we have no immediate plans to return to that resort. To be fair, we don't have any plans to visit DVC at Vero Beach again anytime soon. We would just rather spend our time at WDW.

I suppose that if I asked my wife, we could recreate the complaint list. It is very outdated by now and I feel that it would be unfair to air it again publicly without returning again to see what additional changes have been made. To summarize, it wasn't any one thing about DVC HH that was wrong or bad. It was just the combination of small things that made our visit less than what we had come to expect from DVC.

We visited HHI for the first time this past August. We were able to book a studio at 7 months out.

We loved HH, but we also went in knowing that it was not going to be like a WDW resort. It was a very laid back vacation. There were plenty of kids activitys that our girls loved. The pool did seem a little small, but we never had problems getting chairs. The beach house is lovely. Because I am a beach person, I was worried that I wouldn't like begin on the water, but it didn't affect us a bit. We rode bikes, took the shuttle or drove to the beach house - you do need to get there early if you want a parking spot at the beach house. The marsh side is very pretty and peaceful.

To each their own, some will like HHI and some won't. We ended up doing a small add on and will just use those points for a short end of summer vacation every other year.

DH and I are here at HHI resort right now - and I can tell y'all that this resort is a GEM!!!!! It must be terror in season [as any water resort is - I know, I live the nightmare in NJ]. The island is chock full of folks now - RT278 is bustling at all hours of the day.

But this resort is compact, filled with things to do [should you choose to take advantage] as well as offering the oppty to just chill out!

Gotta run for now - b'lou is telling his tales of shadow in 20 mins and I still need to dress - shorts today 79 degree day! Ain't enjoyin' that back in Jersey!

We stayed at DVC HH for the first time this past Oct. and loved it, we will definatly be going back. I guess technically there is no on site dining but it is located at a marina with a variety of food and drink as well as some small shops attached. You just walk acrossed a little bridge. They also have dinner cruises fishing boats and nature cruises all part of the Marina. You walk to everything. The beach house is about a ten minute bike ride away or you can take the shuttle, we rode bikes on a very safe bike trail. You can cover most of the island on a bicycle. There are many excellent resturants on HH, you will have to drive no matter where you stay but the island is easy to get around on. There is also a mall within walking distance to DVC HH. We stay at the beach a lot so staying on he bay side and enjoying the marshlands with a fishing / crabbing pier was fun. Thought the pool and hot tube were great nice snack bar, we had no children with us but could see there was plenty for them to do. Research the island beyond DVC there is a ton to do, as well as day trips to Savanna and other local hot spots.

HH may not be for everyone but we LOVE IT! We have been there for Spring Break the past 6 years and a few trips in June. We just visited in October for a change of going to WDW for Halloween. I can't say enough good things about the staff. They remember my DD by name when we return..it does feel like we are at our second home. During the trip in October the weather was a bit chilly but I found the recreation staff (in their winter coats) singing Disney songs with the kids who were trying to work up the courage to get in the water. The activities are well planned and my DD has enjoyed them. She even has a email list a mile long of other girls who she has met during her visits. We love going to WDW but we would never get this because of the sheer number of guests.

We also just love HHI the resort the location I mean everything. Now there is really no excuse not to know what HHI is like and what to sort of expect, the info on these boards and the Disney sites all give the best info and a good view. It is not WDW, it has very little Disney feel, but its one of the most beautifull relaxing resorts I have ever been to. (IMOP) of course as not to start any trouble

I was there Labor Day week as a solo and I LOVED IT. It was so relaxing! The Beach house is a quick drive or shuttle ride away-not even 5 minutes. I can see how summer would be pretty crowded at the pool, but the week I was there it was fine.
I ate my lunch at the beach house or the pool every day and then had something light from groceries in the room in the evenings. If I had wanted to eat out, at virtually any price there were certainly enough places to choose from.

I will definately go back.

We tried a short trip there 3 years ago and we LOVED it. We would go again in a heartbeat if it wasn't that it pretty much takes a whole day of travel each way to get there from here. Lovely, relaxing, lots of things to explore on the island - it was one of our best vacations.

Check me as one who loves HH too.

That said, I understand some people's compliant of a beach resort that's not on the beach. If you're plans for a trip are to wander out your front door, spend every day on the beach or at the pool, eat at the resort restauraunt, and don't mind a rather boring surrounding area, VB is for you.

However, if you want the OPTION of spending some time at the beach (and don's mind the short ride/walk), but want a variety of other things to do and plenty of interesting resturaunts to eat at in close proximity, then HH is for you. And even though the Beach House is a short ride or walk away, it is a nice place to spend the day at the pool or beach.

Ironically, we own at BWV, but have stayed at HH and VB more often. We go to HH to escape the New England cold every Christmas/New Years week (the points or cash ressies are more reasonable at this time than WDW), and usually tag on a few days at VB before or after each WDW trip. I personally like the fact that VB and HH are such different resorts.

1) I can see people putting a rip to HH.
2) This is a totally different experience that WDW, DCL or VB.
3) It still coming down to personal preferences and personal likes.
4) HH is a Big-Yea, if
. . . you want laid-back,
. . . you want non-beach, non-park activities

. . . you want kids activities throughout the day
5) HH is a Huge-Nay, if

HH is my LEAST favorite DVC resort.

I sold my points and figure I don't ever have to stay there again.

The draw of HH for me is the beach. DVC is TOO far from the beach. Disney missed the boat on this one IMHO. There are much better locations on HH. (If you don't want beachfront try something in the HarborTown area of Sea Pines. My brother stays there and they love it. They found DVC BORING!)

I loved HHI. So much so I daydream about it sometimes. My partner did not like it. Probably for the same reason she has to be kidnapped/or tricked to stay at VWL.

I think HH is that kind of place. Not a lot of middle ground.

HH might be my favorite resort and might be our family's favorite resort. We love the laid back atmosphere and seclusion amongst the hectic pace that HH can be in high season. We also like the fact that there is a lot of shade when the temperature is up. While DW and DD are beach people, access to the beach has not been an issue for us on our trips. We loved riding our bikes around, exploring the island, and shopping.

Which HH resorts, that we can trade through DVC, do you like the most?

The two that I feel are better and on the DVC exchange list are Marriott's Grande Ocean and Marriott's Barony Beach. It is likely that the new Marriott Surfwatch will be added before summer 2008 or sooner and will fall into spot number 2 ahead of Barony IMO. Plus if one needs a 2 BR it will be cheaper than a DVC HH full week at 270 points for summer compared to 330 for a 2 BR reservation at DVC HH.
