Does anyone have a tried and true, to die for Texas sheet cake recipe? I'm going to a family reunion picnic this weekend and need a share dish.

Dumb question - what's a Texas Sheet Cake, and how is it different from any other sheet cake?

It is a thin chocolate cake, my kids think it is brownies sometimes. And it has this wonderful thick chocolate icing.
Our family likes to cut the cake in pieces wrap in foil and put in freezer. Then eat it later. The cake will be cold but not frozen. We like it best cold.

This is my late grandma's recipe.. I now make it for every other birthday in our family (alternating with her chocolate zucchini recipe), :goodvibes

Cake:
In saucepan, boil 2 sticks butter, 1 cup water, 4 Tbs cocoa. Remove from fire, add 1 1/2 cups sugar, 2 cups flour, 1 tbs baking soda, 2 eggs, 1/2 pint (1 cup) sour cream.

Spread in greased 10x15 (i do 9x13) pan and bake at 375 for 20-25 minutes.

Frosting:
In saucepan, melt 2 sticks butter, 4 tbs cocoa, 6 tbs milk. Cool. Add 1 pound powdered sugar, 1 tsp vanilla, and 1 cup chopped nuts (optional). Spread on cake when cake is slightly cool.

Yummmy!! :thumbsup2

Mmmmm - TX sheet cake, it's been a dessert at many familly gatherings for a long time. I'll post our family recipe later.

Sure! I much prefer the choc. zucchini one over the Texas sheet cake... it is so incredibly yummy and moist.

Over the summer, I usually buy up a lot of zucchini, grate it, and freeze it in 2 cup baggies, so that I have plenty to make the cakes through the winter/spring, :)

Here's the recipe:

Ingredients:
1 cup brown sugar (packed), 1/2 cup white sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup oil, 3 eggs, 1 tsp vanilla, 1/2 cup buttermilk, 2 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 tsp baking soda, 4 Tbs cocoa, 2 cups grated zucchini, semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Cream together butter, oil, and both sugars. Add eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk. Stir well. In separate bowl, mix the rest of the dry ingredients together then add to butter mixture. Add zucchini. Put in 13x9 pan. Sprinkle with choc. chips (I use a lot, :)) and bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes.

Texas sheet cake is very common in my neck of the woods. Many call it sheath cake. I'll have to give some of your recipes a try. My MIL's is to die for. I'll ask for her recipe to share.

I second the Pioneer Woman's "Best Chocolate Cake ever". Super easy and so delicious. In fact my daughter says this is her favorite cake and only wants this cake for her birthday....not a bakery cake!

I've lived in Tx my whole life and have never heard of this! I'll have to give it a try and ask around if anyone else has ever had/heard of it!

It's CRAZY good! Our version has a bit of cinnamon in it, and uses buttermilk (I use Saco buttermilk powder) instead of sour cream. I will post the recipe when I find it. We also do a peanut butter version and it's also very yummy!

This is the most similar recipe to the one I use. I add a whole cup of sour cream, not a half. DELICIOUS!!!!!

I used to think you had to ice the cake while it was warm, but you only need to make sure the ICING is warm when you put it on the cake ;).

Okay, I made this one over the weekend and I'm kind of disappointed. I just didn't think it was that great and I love chocolate cake. I double checked and I made it correctly, it just wasn't that good. :confused3

I've never made one or even tried one (that i know of) that had sour cream. go with one of the recipies with buttermilk like the pioneer woman's link. They are unbelievably good.
I love the pioneer woman by the way...
