*** Television, Summer 2009 ***

Latest word on Caprica is that we won't see the second episode until January. LINK

Syfy spreads their original programming around the entire calendar -- figure:

Summer 2009 - Eureka and Warehouse 13
Fall 2009 - Sanctuary and Stargate Universe
Winter 2010 - Caprica (and maybe Sarah Jane Adventures)

So continuing our Netflix-less weekend. (See message #98.)

Yesterday we watched King Arthur (2004) [IMDB] It was pretty good; not something we would have watched if we weren't scraping the bottom of the barrel (or actually the last few bits off of our DVR hard drive).

I did note an incredibly high number of anachronisms. That just seemed a bit careless to me. If you're going to place a movie in a specific time period, and work really hard to make us believe you were trying to be a serious period piece, then don't make stupid errors -- at least not errors that span, in some case, 1300 years. I was blown away by just how many things (noted in IMDB) were over 1000 years out of time.

Putting that aside, it was pretty to look at, and it did pass the two hours nicely.

I don't know what we'll watch tonight. I know we picked up Pushing Daisies and Kings last night, so that'll probably be what we'll watch. The only other programming left on our DVR that we could watch tonight are episodes of Nature's Most Amazing Events, but I've been finding that program excessively depressing due to how much they focus on death. :(

HEAD'S UP!

The final episode of the ABC series Cupid will air tonight (since the NBA finals are over), 10PM Eastern.

We're back in Netflix's good graces; they "found" the missing DVDs. We've got a whole mess of DVDs on their way to us now, the second half of last years series of Weeds, the entire final season of The L Word, and a few movies (Seven Pounds, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and the new Indiana Jones movie) between now and a week from Friday.

We're watching Merlin tonight. It seems like a decent production, but right off the bat I've noticed that the credit overlays appear pretty low quality. That's usually a bad sign. Hopefully there won't be further compromises made...

I'm not sure where this came from, but CBS' plan to pick up the third season of Flashpoint to present next Summer evidently has changed. Flashpoint returns on July 17 with nine new episodes.

The Listener was preempted last night for a Farrah Fawcett special. Folks with TiVos should check their recording for next week to make sure that it is for the episode "Lisa Says", and it is scheduled to (re-)record.

I don't have HBO, but that show "Hung" intrigues me. It just seems so naughty! LOL. I won't even TRY to describe it on the DIS because I would certainly get points!

Okay, this was a misunderstanding (first and foremost on their own publicists' part): The episodes of Flashpoint being shown this summer are the "back nine" for Season 2. CBS has picked up Flashpoint Season 3, for broadcast next summer (though if something shocking occurs, and they actually run out of shows to show next Winter or Spring, we can expect to see Flashpoint return earlier).

What would you do in the wake of a global catastrophe? How would you find food? Water? Shelter?

The Colony is a controlled experiment to see exactly what it would take to survive and rebuild under these circumstances. For 10 weeks, a group of 10 volunteers, whose backgrounds and expertise represent a cross-section of modern society, are isolated in an urban environment outside Los Angeles and tasked with creating a livable society.

With no electricity from the grid, no running water and no communication with the outside world, all the volunteers have to work with are their skills and whatever tools and supplies they can scavenge from their surroundings.

Experts from the fields of homeland security, engineering and psychology have helped design the world of The Colony to reflect elements from both real-life disasters and models of what the future could look like after a global viral outbreak.

Over the course of the 10-week experiment, the Colonists must work together to build the necessities of survival, such as a water-filtration system, a battery bank that powered their electricity, a solar cooker, a shower system and a greenhouse – and even some niceties (a coffee maker!).
