Team Rebel Alliance Introduction

I took the day off (unless getting dragged around tagging stuff for a wedding registry counts). I am saving up for the 1/2 tomorrow. I decided to do it. My 1/2 PR is 2:03 but last year I bonked at mile 10 after going out too fast for the Leaf Peepers 1/2 in Waterbury, VT in Oct. Because of that I don't really know how fast I can do this one. I am thinking 2:11 because that would be an even 10mm. I guess that we will see tomorrow.

I was just assigned to this team and I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Tonya and I am 28 years old. I am NEW to running. I just got the clearance from my surgeon today to start running so I plan to start my couch to 5K program this coming up week. My goal is to finish the Princess 1/2 next year. I have not yet read any of this thread so I am off to read it. I can use any tips, comments, etc that you have for a newbie! :thumbsup2

TONYA :welcome:

I think we are starting off a bit slowly because we are a new team but I am sure that business will pick up!

I won't comment on the half that I ran this morning except to say that I earned 26.2 miles for the team!!! Other than that it was awful.

Tonya~ WELCOME!!! Yay for starting running, and you'll be racking up the miles in no time!

I spent two and a half hours at the climbing gym last night, felt great! This morning though, I woke up to my knee feeling fat and not wanting to bend fully. NOT good as my triathlon is tomorrow! I'm going to try to walk it off today.

Scott, congrats on finishing the half marathon, but sorry it went poorly  I'll look for your race report

Hi guys! It's hard for me to post on the weekends with all the kiddos and DH at home.
Tonya...:welcome: I started with C25K and it was a great program. You'll do great! We'll be right here to support you.
Suzann...Oh, no for the knee. Hope it was feeling better and that the triathalon went well....sorry I forgot to say good luck earlier, but better late than never.....:cheer2:Go, Suzann Go!!!:cheer2:
Scott...when are you getting married? I loved working on our registry, DH loved putting crazy items on it:confused3 ! But now, I've been married almost 17 years and I could honestly use bridal shower gifts again:lmao: . And I would say that "power shopping" counts as exercise. Sounds like your race wasn't the best, but thanks for scoring all of that mileage for us this morning!
I just got back from a 90min run and realized that I set my Garmin on an indoor setting and it didn't figure my mileage:confused3 ! I went on map my run and it looks like I did around 8.25 miles, which is okay since I really didn't feel like going out in 32 degrees and blustery winds and I set my Garmin to do 4/1 run/walk. So, no matter what it's done!:dance3:

Well, my knee started to loosen up last night (thankfully!!) and I slept well for an early start this morning!

Got up early, had a protein shake and a banana... heard the rain pouring on the sky light. GREAT. Loaded up the car with all my stuff and off for a 35 minute drive to the triathlon. Finally got there and walked into the pool area where they were doing the registration and it was HOT! Registered and got my goodie bag (lots of great stuff in there.. a tech tshirt, a beanie, water bottle, a canvas bag and of course the normal swim cap and race number.) Started setting up my bike on the trainer (it was an indoor swim and indoor bike on a trainer) There were 20 trainers set up, 10 people per wave so the next people could have their bikes set up and ready to go too. They weighed yourself and your bike too so the computers would calculate how much power you needed to pedal for 8 miles. Looked outside and noticed it had cleared up and the sun was coming out!

It came time to actually get in the pool (And I was happy I was in the first wave of the day because we got the most time to set up and get ready!) Took some practice strokes then came back to the wall for the start. The countdown came and I was off! I only had to share a lane with one other person so that wasn't bad! I get three laps in and realize I'm not far behind the same person in my lane.. either she swims as slow as I am or my swimming training has been paying off! The pool went from 3 feet depth to 12 feet depth at the end and you could tell the difference of resistance! We had to swim 9 laps total (18 lengths) and by the 8th one I was beginning to slow down. My lane partner finished a lap ahead of me, but out of the 10 of us that started, I didn't finish last!!! When I was done my 9 laps, I had to get out of the pool. This sounds easier than it was! 3 feet of water and you have to have the strength to get yourself out of the pool without going into other lanes. I stepped on the lane buoy and hoisted my way out and ran to the bike section. (I think my swim was 11 minutes)
I got to my bike, put on my socks and shoes and hopped on the bike... started peddling and then stared at the computer trainer... it had turned off! I let one of the volunteers know and she came and turned it on for me. I think that reset the weight for the machine, which made me pedal further for my distance. Once again, the biking portion was right near the pool and it was HOT in there... right above us the ceiling was only 8 feet high so it felt like a SAUNA! All the heat rising would come back down on us... I sweated so much! The riders next to me were joking saying we're just riding in hawaii. Ha. We all chatted while riding, learning a lot about each other and giving some tips. I was second to last out of my ten people to finish the bike, but that was ok. (I think being on the trainer is mentally harder than on the road for a tri. I couldn't play the catch up game with other people on the course... I pick someone and try to catch up with them) I finished the bike in about 36 minutes
While I only had a tenth of a mile left, I put on my long sleeve tech shirt that had my number on it to get ready for the run. Once I was done with my 8 miles, I got off the bike and ran out of the pool and outside. My legs felt a little wobbly, but I didn't stop running. The running portion was around a lake, of which I've ran before. I caught up to the woman that left before me and we decided to run together... loved that and we supported each other all the way around the lake. With only a quarter mile left I decided to give it a last push effort and found the finish line at 1 hour and 16 minutes. Received my medal and had a smile on my face.
While packing the bike away in the car, it started to rain again... hasn't let up since. Great timing!!! :goodvibes

Triathlon distance: 1/4 swim, 8 mile bike, 3 mile run. 22.5 miles for the day. YAY

:stitch: 'Ohana's Monday Mixer :stitch:

We had so much fun with last week’s Monday Mixer, ‘Ohana is doing it again tomorrow! Come early, stay late, visit on any day of the week. No need to stick to the topic, either. We’re just happy to hear from our cousins and swap a tale or two over some tasty beverages. :drinking1

Tomorrow, we’re curious to find out how you pass the time on long walks/wogs/runs if you don’t listen to music and are training solo. (Or what you do in addition to/as an alternative to listening to music.) What makes the long miles less daunting and maybe even enjoyable? What do you watch for, think about, concentrate on? From the serious to silly to the surreal, we want to hear your stories.

Me, I’m pretty sure I hallucinate, but the rest of you probably have better strategies...

Hope to see you on the ‘Ohana thread. The mixer posts for this week start here.

Hey guys, slacker Allyson here. I got the email with the spreadsheet, just need to go open it and figure it out.

Since the Half in January I have run twice. Yup. Twice. I can not get motivated. It is like not having that Disney race out there in the future means there is nothing to get me moving. A local 10K in June just isn't doing it. *sigh* It is hard. It is snowing here. Again. Winter seems endless. Maybe when it warms up and the weather improves that will help. Running on the treadmill in the basement, just not so appealing.

I will try though. I don't want to let all of last year's work and progress just stop and end.

So I will try to go hop on today, even for just a mile or two.

And hey, does walking the dog count? I walk him every day, a mile or so. Doesn't get the heart rate flying but we are walking.

Make it a great day folks!

Allyson, land of the No School announcements...today is snow day #9 for this winter!!!!:scared1:

Suzann...Wow! Awesome job on your tri. And 22.5 miles for our team  :cheer2:  ! Great job!
Allyson....Walking the dog absolutely counts. We've had 3 snowdays this year, but it looks like spring is on the way, at least in the MidWest it is. Apparently, New York is getting blasted with snow. Don't worry, you're absolutely not a slacker, it is very hard to get motivated with the yucky weather. I've found that if I put a movie in the DVD player, then the TM isn't so bad.
Happy Monday all and take care!

Allyson Thanks for hanging around. I have felt the post Disney let down at times also. Like Tracey said, once the weather gets a bit nicer, you will be itching to get out there.

SuzannWay to go with the tri!!! Sounds like fun. I will have to do one soon.

I did nothing yesterday as I was resting up from the 1/2 on Sat.

Today, I have 2 hours of snow removal under my belt!

Ok team, I ran some hills last night... we have a love hate relationship. Hate doing them, but feel good afterwards!

Good for you on the hills Suzann! Hills are tough. There is one on our outside running route (someday when the snow melts and it is warm I'll see it again!) that is my nemesis. I have never been able to run up the whole thing. Someday.

Anyway my mantra of the day is "A short run beats no run". So I did 1.5 miles on the treadmill. It was so hard to just get down there and do it. I was talking myself out of it the whole time. But I did it, its over and it is better than nothing. Baby steps to get back in the game...

Allyson

PS I just went in and added in all my daily dog walking in Feb and the one time I ran in Feb. I also have started filling in March.

Way to go Allyson!!! And yay for more miles and minutes for the team! And yes, "A short run beats no run" any day of the week!

I know you'll be able to run up that hill all the way by the middle of summer! YOU CAN DO IT!

I did 10 reps of the hill... by the 8th, 9th and 10th one, I could feel my legs starting to give out on me earlier and earlier up the hill! Ugh, pushed through it though. Hopefully that will give me some good strength for my stair climb coming up!

I just saw a thing on a stair climb on the Today show last week. I think they were doing 66 flights to raise awareness for MS. Amazing, that is ALOT of stairs! LOL! You go girl!:thumbsup2

Allyson

Its one of the hardest workouts you can do!!! Surprising, my lungs hurt more than my legs last year!

Suzann...nice job on the hill run....were you doing sprints? My DS swears by hill sprints to strengthen his quads and hamstrings. He even has different ways of bounding and striding:confused3 ! It just looks painful! My Sunday run was really hilly and I was still feeling it yesterday.
Allyson...see those dog walks really do add up. I'm fully with you on a short run beats no run:banana: .
Scott...you must have alot of snow!
Have a great day everybody!

Tracey~ Yup, those are sprints! Run as fast as you can all the way up the hill (one full city block). I seem to get slower and slower from sprint 1 to sprint 10, but it really does work you out! (And works out your lungs too!)

Hey Team Rebel Alliance. I just requested to be put on a team and I am assuming I will be put on this one. I just wanted to post alittle about myself.

My name is Steve and I go to the University of Toledo. When Im not at school I live in South Carolina with my parents (Dennyha and Missyha on the boards). I completed the half in 2007 and I had to quit halfway through in 2008 because of my knee (old football injury that wont go away). I was supposed to be there this past year but couldn't find a decent place to watch my dog. I am signed up for the 2010 half and this time I want to make sure that my knee is in good shape to finish. I plan on starting a program on monday so I can start racking up the minutes/miles. I can't wait to get started and look forward to be part of the team.

P.S. My dog, Moose, is very active and very annoying if I don't tire him out with a walk. So I should post atleast a couple miles a day just from him.

Welcome Steve!!! I won't send you the spreadsheet for the miles yet until we confirm that you are with us, but way to get motivated for next years event!! And walking the dog totally counts! :goodvibes

In 2008 with the football injury sidelining you from finishing the race, do you think that could have been prevented from training more? I know with my knee, there's a fine line between not training enough and training too much (I've had 3 knee surgeries on the same knee)
