Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Welcome to Shanna and Beth!! Squirrel!

Congrats on your PR, Jackie! That one's on my to do list since DH's family is in Jax, but it's so close to Princess...

Jeanne...we should definitely have a Team NC mini WISH meet sometime!

Richard...I don't think it was you. I figure John's an international spy or something :confused3

JenL...congrats on your bball star! Hope you get to feelin' better soon. DH and I have both had it too.

JenB...we are looking at Oddyssey, I just wish it was on Sun instead of Sat, but with the long weekend, looks doable. For TM TV watching, I've been watching a LOT of BBC stuff....my favorite so far was Survivors. I was really disappointed when it ended. Watching the Walking Dead now...nothing like a good zombie to keep you moving on the TM :scared1:

AFM: tapering ready for Princess, trying to make sure I don't blow out my knee. I am excited about all of the race opportunities up here. I have started back to work part-time this week so hoping to keep up the training momentum I've already built.

Jen--loved the essay. Thanks so much for sharing. I am so glad things are going so much better in school.:goodvibes I emailed my sister in PA to see if they are going to be around the weekend of the Odyssey, but haven't heard anything yet. If they are, I think we are going to do it. If not, we are going to WDW.:goodvibes May 23rd is our 25th anniversary--I can't believe it! We don't have anything big planned (obviously), but we'd like to do something.

Debra--I know what you can do this fall--come to WDW Oct 17-22 and help me "chaperone" Tom and his friends as they drink about the world.:rotfl: Why did I ever think this was a good idea????? It started out as a 21st bday/senior college gift for him and a few friends and has turned into a big party.:scared1: Actually only 6 college students, but we are paying for everything except their drinks. We got a 2BR at BW with a Boardwalk view. And we're all cramming in there for the weekend. Mike keeps saying it's going to be lots of fun!:thumbsup2

Hi to all our new folks!

Some folks who were in Louisville for meetings at my work this week were trying to get registered for Broadstreet--I don't know if they were ever able to do it or not.

I am finally getting excited about Princess. I have gotten in a couple of good 3-4 milers with only some minor ankle issues. I am off to strength class today--which I think is going to be brutal since I have only gone twice in the last 3 months.

Have a great weekend!

Richard...I don't think it was you. I figure John's an international spy or something :confused3

Ha! That's exactly what my wife's co-workers told her several years ago when they learned we'd be moving to Russia. :lmao:

Rose - tell your son and his friends it's much better to start the DATW challenge at Canada than at Mexico. Not that I would know or anything. :rolleyes1

:cheer2:Welcome Beth & Shanna! It's great to have new cousins!

Jackie - great job on that PR! I'm impressed!

Jen B - I loved the essay, and I'm thrilled for you that she has come so far with school in one year. I know what it's like when your kids are stressed at school. And it sounds like she loved the race!

Finally, congratulations to all of us who made it into Broad Street! What a ridiculous ordeal that was. When I did the race 3 years ago it didn't sell out until a day or two before. I guess the word has gotten out!

I've been good with my workouts - I've missed a couple when my schedule got crazy in the last two weeks, but I got right back to it. This will be my 6th week of training, and I am proud of myself for sticking to it! However, I am completely failing with my weight loss goals, and I'm getting a bit discouraged despite myself. I used to be able to have a cheat day or two, and then get right back to losing pounds again, but right now it seems like an occasional night out or dessert sets me back a whole week. I'm off to New Orleans Sunday - Thursday for Mardi Gras, and I'm feeling like that will deep-six my weight loss goals for ages! However, I refuse to go to New Orleans and not enjoy the food there. Any suggestions?

Lastly, I've revived my blog (see the link below)! I'm mostly going to be using it for travel-related articles, but I'm hoping to liveblog my trip to New Orleans so feel free to check it out if you're interested!

:thumbsup2 Mike thinks they will start at France or England since we are coming from the International Gateway. I am just glad the plan is to only do the permanent countries and not all the additional f&w carts.:scared1: My 21 yo seemed to think it would be a good idea to start this around 6:00pm. Mike and I were both like uh, noooooo. It needs to be a little more spread out. We are such mean parents.:rotfl:

Kira--have fun in NOLA.:goodvibes

We are doing a short taper run this morning. I am going to play around with intervals a little cause I still haven't decided what I am going to use next weekend.

Have a great Saturday!

Rose - Last weekend, before the marathon, we toured the Budweiser brewery in Jacksonville. We went for the tour after a late breakfast and shopping for throwaway sweatshirts at Walmart. Never even considered the time, until DD texted her boyfriend to tell him she was drinking the new Bud Light Platinum. He sent back "it's not even noon!" Oops! What kind of parents does that make us? :upsidedow

JenB
- The essay made me cry. LOVED seeing the race through her eyes. Thanks for sharing. And I'm so proud of how far she's come in a year. I know it's a huge relief to you.

Mel - You'll just have to get used to making road trips. I was so impressed with the 26.2 with Donna that I think everyone should do it. It's not such a bad drive from here, once you get used to it! We used to go to WDW for vacations. Now we just go to run. Lately, we just go to bring cold weather. I'm afraid next time we approach the state line that we'll be banned.

Ran what was supposed to be an easy 8-miler this morning. My running buddy and I are bad news together. We don't have a slow gear, and the harder we try to slow down, the faster we go. That's not necessarily a bad thing, and I'm sure it's what helped me last weekend, but when you're still in recovery/taper mode, it's not necessarily a good thing either!

Going to go enjoy the rest of the warm half of the weekend, before the "blizzard" strikes tomorrow. (Those of you not in the area - there's a forecast of a trace snowfall tomorrow night. First of the season. :scared1:)

Jackie

Rose: I'm so happy for you that your running is feeling better. i'm looking forward to seeing you next weekend. The trip with you son sounds like fun and like there will be lots of good stories to come from the weekend.

Jackie: thanks for the response to the essay. I know it is not a masterpiece, but the relief at an improved schoolyear and happy kid is huge. I recall you have done MCM, what did you think? I am seriously considering frantically trying to sign up when it opens in a few weeks.

I am looking forward to Princess next week and just bought my DL entry (had too much fun at Tink and had o go back). Off now to a chili cook off with friends, ran 10 miles this morning but will still be way over my caloric allowance for the day.

/
Jackie - I'm pretty sure I didn't cause John to move, though Mel's explanation sounds on target to me. ;)

Jen - Awesome to see your DD writing about the 5K, doing better at school is even more awesome! Good luck with the backpack.

AFM - I'm tapering for my second marathon of the year in two weeks (while several of you are tapering for Princess, except that yours is a week earlier). Meanwhile, I am also building for my Ironman training, these two led to an interesting training week this past week, but it was a good build week of training with some outstanding workouts. I'm targeting an April 1st half Ironman in Galveston for an "A" level race this spring. This will be the fifth anniversary of my first half marathon (2:57:59 back on 04/01/2007) and what a ride those five years have been! I am aiming for my first sub-6 hour half Ironman race time and, with a perfect race, I would really like to best my previous time (7:52:07) on this course from 2 years ago by 2 hours.

I hope everyone else is doing well and on-target with their training and/or personal projects.

Jen - MCM is a wonderful race. Best crowd support of any marathon I've ever run. There are only a couple of miles where there aren't hundreds, maybe thousands, of people lining the streets.
I STRONGLY suggest booking a hotel now, even if you're just considering it. You can always cancel. We stayed in Crystal City the first year, and had to take the shuttle or metro back after the finish, and the wait averaged about an hour and a half. Last year we stayed right at the finish line, and it was worth every penny, um, dollar, that we paid. Most of my friends who are going back are looking at the hotel I stayed at because they were so jealous!
I would consider doing it again, although I think I'm leaning toward more mid-size races instead of the big ones from here on. I didn't notice the congestion as much in 2010, but started more toward the front in 2011 and felt like I never did get out of the crowd for several miles. But everyone should do it at least once!

Definitely try to sign up for MCM. I ran it last year and had a blast, definitely one of the best races I've ever done. Beautiful scenery and course, great crowd support, and terrific organization by the Marines. The only dull part of the course is miles 20-22 where you're running on the highway out of the city and back into Virginia. No spectators and not much to look at. The rest of the course is great - gorgeous views of the woods and reservoir in Rock Creek, all the buildings and monuments in DC, the views of the Potomac, and the start and finish by the National Cemetery. Plus hundreds of thousands of cheering spectators and a killer drum group getting you pumped up to "beat the bridge" at mile 20. (You have to be onto the bridge by a certain time or you get swept).

Like Jackie, I also stayed right at the finish line. In fact, I was so close, I had to walk past my hotel to go get my gear bag and then come back. :)

Richard - have fun at the Woodlands race! Can't wait to hear how they run it in their first year back.

Jen - hope the Princess goes well. Take lots of pics for those of us who are stuck elsewhere and can't be there.

Rose - 6pm is a bit of a late start. We started just before noon and finished around 630. Of course, we weren't trying to do it as fast as possible, which I guess is what your son and his friends are doing. :drinking1

And for those of my cousins who aren't able to attend Dublin with me in October, how about joining me in Spain for the RnR Madrid Marathon on April 22? ;)

An early-evening quickie....take that for what you will. :lmao:

Corinna: Your on-stage appearance is sure to be a success! You're more than ready to break a leg, metaphorically speaking. I'm also sure that your plan to focus on getting stronger and fully recovering is the best thing to do.

I keep reading about all your theatrical work and think it sounds both glamorous and exhausting, btw.

Jen: I didn't know that about your back. I'd say bareback horseriding is adventurous, and at least gives you a story about your wild youth! Although over my end-of-January trip I was carrying my niece around and thought, "Wow. I definitely don't have the energy to be a parent, let alone the upper-body strength." Kudos to you!

How are you coming with your Y challenge - I know you're busy, but I'm so impressed with the physical activity you (and Emma, too) are squeezing into your schedules.

Richard: I keep catching snippets about your training - it all seems like it's going so well. You mentioned something about the mental preparation going into your events; your post came right when I needed it, so thanks! And I can really see how that part of the game has made you sharper and more focused when I look at your upcoming goals. Great job!

As for us being harmless, shhhhhhh. I have a reputation to maintain.

Jeanne: Congratulations on the pending grandmotherhood, again! I think that's exciting and wonderful! How quickly it all happened, too, or maybe it's just that time flies by. It seems like only yesterday we were all introduced to the Greek.

I'm sorry to hear about the continued problems with your health. Glad to hear you're being weaned off the steroids in the long run, but hope there are some answers soon.

I haven't read "Ismael," sorry. But I read quite a few books that I don't understand - I'm not the brightest penny in the roll - and when I come across something like that I try to focus on something I do understand or appreciate - like the style or imagery. I hope that helps. (I also make snarky commentary about pretentious claptrap, but that's not good for book clubs. :rotfl2:)

JenB: I'm very jealous of ODDyssey, but it happens to fall when DOOD & I (and his honors students and colleagues/partners) will be in Oxford. I couldn't pass up the chance to go. We haven't signed up for ToT yet, but DOOD says we're in, even though it's a night race, only a 10 miler and at the beginning of the peak of his fall semester duties/travel. Methinks someone was pathetic when she broached the subject. :rolleyes1

I didn't realize you were also serving as a pacer for the Princess. Your friend is very, very lucky - as you always seem to be having such fun! I'm also glad you signed up for the DL 1/2. Those spots were going really fast! The best news, though, is about DD. That running at Disney is worthy of her essay...just WOW!

And then to read the essay - look at how the crowd cheering for her utterly transformed her tripping into a great memory, a victory, and a positive experience. That's the kind of thing running (and running at Disney) does! :cloud9:

Last: A Chili cook-off would be incentive for me!

Kira: You're going to Mardi Gras? Really - is this a business trip? Do tell! It's been years since I've been to NO, so I'll want to hear stories when you get back if I don't always catch the live blogging! And great job with getting your groove on for 6 weeks - the weight loss will come, I'm sure. (I wouldn't focus on that, just running, while in NOLA).

Shanna: Welcome, welcome! Let's see, a St. Patty's Day, Pints to Pasta, Oktoberfest, and Wine & Dine...Hmm, I might hazard a guess that your preferred post-race recovery drink is a tasty adult beverage?:thumbsup2

Jackie: A HUGE congrats on your marathon! It sounds like a wonderful event to take part in, and that your day was just about perfect (after the stress of the start). And I'm so very happy for your well-earned PR! You're an inspiration! :yay:

It sounds like you and your running partner are great for each other for training and race day. (And I'm sure for recovery, too, at least in terms of the company.) I hope today's race went well!

Beth: Welcome, welcome! Hmm, a Black Velvet...seems like you and Shanna will get along famously. (And have joined the right team....:lmao:) I've only been to the NYT Disney Store a couple of times; it's wonderful and overwhelming at the same time. Hmmm, it sounds like a Philly race or two might have lots of the cousins. I may need to look at my schedule. The Mini 10K sounds amazing, as well.

Mel: Survivors on BBC? I must check that out. I'm a fan of all zombie works, but haven't been able to save "Walking Dead" for the gym. There's a zombie run out there that Vicky shared with me. I'll try to post it here next time. Are you part-time until the fall?

Rose: Um, well, I did think that Tom's 21st at Epcot was a great idea, if I recall. And I do think it will be a lot of fun. A chaperone, I am not. I tend to like to imbibe way too much. :upsidedow In going to Oxford, I've had to promise DOOD I'd do most of my pub drinking away from his students. What? I'm of legal age. Seriously, that sounds like a fabulous time with Tom & his friend & Mike. I do have a question for you, though. Does that mean you're not doing ToT or Wine & Dine? (I may have forgotten.)

John & Rose: Canada. Pffft. Start at Mexico with tequila. All the rest is going to be a blur after that. :rolleyes1 (And none of that frozen slushie stuff either. Blech.) Seriously, I do love me the whiskey flight at R&C, although that tends to undercut the DATW.

AFM: It's been a busy week here. DOOD & I are looking for new digs, which brings up all sorts of complications. Not the least of which is our two different sets of priorities. :lmao:That, and we've been seeing lots of places in our free time. Yech.

On the running front, I went out for my first official run - as in I've got planned intervals - since toe-mageddon. Slower by about 2:15 for each the 3 short miles I did, with a moderate amount of discomfort both during and after. But I think I was much slower on the walk portions than the run portions, if that makes any sense? :confused3

The good news is that I got out there, which relieved more of my mental stress. I want to give it a couple of weeks to see what happens before I start thinking about a late spring race. Right now I'm back to icing every day. And the other good news is that I'm getting back into a solid XT groove. Things happen for a reason.

And in my usual silliness. Next WDW trip is for spring break. We're going to see some Shakespeare at UCF while we're there. Yeah, we're a wild couple.

Feel free to skip this but I'm a proud mama and think it is a cool way to view a race (through the eyes on an 8 year old). Here is one part of her essay: Disney is the greatest place to be because you can run a 5K through Epcot. For example, I got to run a 5K through Epcot. It was early in the morning and foggy. So foggy if you took a picture it looked like it was snowing. When our corral got to go, we started to jog. When we got to the start line we saw Jose, Panchito, and Donald. We were in Epcot parking lot, there was a row of port a potties and running next to the port a potties was a man in an American suit holding an American flag. Later we go in to the park but we were where employees go. We saw the mini parking lot inside Test Track, and saw a wall that looked Mexican. I was confused because as I remember, Mexico is nowhere near Test Track. Soon, we got into the actual park I knew so well. I zoomed through it. When we were at Italy my dad said that the song that was playing was hard to run to. When I saw the finish line I tried to sprint but I tripped. When I got up a whole group cheered for me. I ran to the finish line got my medal. I was happy. I hope I get to run again.

That is amazing, I would be proud of her too! Hopefully she has found her streak and will never look back! :thumbsup2

Debra--I know what you can do this fall--come to WDW Oct 17-22 and help me "chaperone" Tom and his friends as they drink about the world.:rotfl: Why did I ever think this was a good idea????? I still haven't done this yet and I just turned 30 last month... I think I am going to lose my chance to be young and foolish! :lmao:

:cheer2:Welcome Beth & Shanna! It's great to have new cousins!

Thanks Kira! My training has almost stopped since Tink ended... I really need to get back into the swing of things since I haven't done a long run since the race! What is wrong with my motivation, ugh! :sad2: I started Hula lessons last Thursday and have found that running beforehand doesn't really work (my legs were SO tired it was hard to do the moves fluidly) so there is another possible day I've knocked out of the running..!

I bet N.O. is going to be amazing, but I haven't been yet either so no suggestions, but I will gladly take yours when you are done if that is OK!

I am looking forward to Princess next week and just bought my DL entry (had too much fun at Tink and had o go back). Off now to a chili cook off with friends, ran 10 miles this morning but will still be way over my caloric allowance for the day.

I wish I had signed up but also glad I didn't... they are full now so whats done is done. Maybe next year it will be our race since my husband says there is no way I am getting him to run the Tink again!

Shanna: Welcome, welcome! Let's see, a St. Patty's Day, Pints to Pasta, Oktoberfest, and Wine & Dine...Hmm, I might hazard a guess that your preferred post-race recovery drink is a tasty adult beverage?:thumbsup2

Hmmm... I admit I don't feel as guilty AFTER a run, but it has to be hours after... the weirdest quirk of mine is that nothing at all tastes good for an hour or two after I run a long distance. The first time I ran 13 I quite literally got sick by trying to force some food down me within an hour... :headache: Once I get going though my body wants to EAT ALL THE THINGS to make up for lost time (I can't run well with much in there when I start either). Hmm... we'll have to see how this works out with Wine and Dine! The other races are short enough that I don't see any problem there... I am a NW girl of course we like our beer! :drinking1

I'm glad your toe is at least working with you a little! I hope it gets better by leaps and bounds - I agree that a lot of times just DOING IT is all I really need to feel strong, motivated, and good about training in general. If I go more than two days without running I start feeling awful..! Slow and steady though.... no re-injuries!

One of my coworkers broke his toe playing trampoline dodge ball (I did not even know there was such a thing) and not being able to get out there is such a bummer for him... I'm hiding my gym stuff as best I can and keeping the talk to a minimum but I wonder what is a nice thing to do for a runner who is out of commission for another 4 weeks?

Happy Monday Cousins!

Debra ~ Thanks for the welcome! :) Yes, the store can be overwhelming - so much is going on!!

Shanna ~ I hear you on the slacking. Technically my Broad Street plan was to be 12 weeks... Well, it's 11 weeks. Training with runs starts tomorrow morning!!

I hope everyone who's planning races soon has them go well!! And that everyone who raced over the weekend had wonderful times (in both senses of the word)!!

I'm at my parents' on vacation for a few days this week...their computer is less than state-of-the-art, so I can't stay on for long as it's torture since I'm used to my macBook pro!! I'll check in as I'm able!

Sorry I've been a bad cousin lately. I promise to try to stop by more often.

:welcome: to our new cousins! I'm looking forward to getting to know you!

And, finally, GOOD LUCK to everyone running the Princess this weekend. I can't wait to hear all about it! :thumbsup2

I hope all our Princess cousins had a great race!!! :)

No worries, Debra, that particular secret is safe with me, besides I think you've already got everyone convinced otherwise anyway. ;)

Congratulations to the Princees runners! I'm looking forward to seeing reviews of good Princess experiences here as part of my mental preparation for my marathon next Saturday. I'm looking for a new PR, which should be likely if I can just avoid injury since I just set that PR in January. The main difference is that this race doesn't have photo opportunities every mile--and definitely no roller coasters!

I'm also keeping up with my IM training so far. Yesterday was an 80 mile bike ride on much of the IM Texas course. The road conditions are better this year as many of the less than ideal areas have been repaved since last year. Hopefully this will mean a smoother and faster course.

Hi cousins!!

I hope everyone is doing well on this leap day! :)

I'm back in the swing of things after our week of Winter Break. Feeling kind of icky right now and hoping that something like skipping tonight's run (in the cold rain...probably a smart idea to skip with a sniffly nose) and instead taking a hot shower, putting a heating pad on my upper back for a while, and an early bedtime will kick whatever this is out of my system.

I did get a run in yesterday...up along the Hudson River to see the Fantasy. WOW!!! She is gorgeous!!

Have a good day all!!

Beth: How cool you got to see the Fantasy. I'm so psyched we will be cruising on her for spring break :cool1::cool1:

I had a nice weekend at Princess although I still feel sleep deprived. I ran with a friend to help him through his first half marathon. He did an awesome job and didn't really need me at all but it was fun. The added fun was when he told me he would be running in a skirt. He raised money for charity with this race and one donation was contingent on him wearing the skirt. It was a nice WISH green skirt though, so all was good.

I'm settling back at home and gearing up for my next half on April Fools Day in Atlantic City. Off to work now to dig out of the huge pile that accumulated while I was away. Disney trips are always too brief...

I had a nice weekend at Princess although I still feel sleep deprived. I ran with a friend to help him through his first half marathon.

I couldn't have asked for a better companion for my first! Thanks a million.. what a wonderful weekend! I traveled with three women (a coworker, that coworker's good friend, and that friend's sister) all of whom ALSO completed their first halves, and it was so amazing reaching this milestone together.

It was a privilege to meet several of you at Downtown Disney and at the Princess. My only regret is not getting a hold of Jen's camera... :) j/k! I echo the wishes to all of you for a great leap day and beyond, and hope you may have room for me to join you all in your adventures. I'm terrible with names, but if you want to find me on Facebook, I'm George Huang, and my profile picture until I finally get home from a conference is me with the Stanley Cup. More to come, and cheers!

George
