Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Hello 'Ohana Cousins! Thanks again to Debra for the mixer invite!

I don't have a particular race that I'm looking forward to. I think they're all too far away for me to think about. But I guess if I had to pick one, it would be the Midsummer Night's Run (15K) because Hockeychic and her DH will be there. It makes such a difference when you have friends who are doing the same race!

As for WDW - I think I'm looking forward to hanging out with all the WISH'ers and eating lots of junk food like the Kitchen Sink after the 1/2 :D

Kate - So glad to hear that you and your mum will be coming in January! Have you done races with her before? I'm still thinking about the 5K myself but am not really sure if I want to get up early two days in a row :)

Apart from that I'm really looking forward to my first ever run with my boyfriend on 5th July! It'll be a totally different experience and possibly a shocking one for him as he's never seen me run ha ha ha. It's not a great look, which is why i've avoided running with him for so long :)

Saturday when DH and I finished our super sweaty 6 miles, he looks at me and says, "You know I love you and I think you're beautiful, but when you've just finished running you look really rough." Ah, the joys of having been married 21 years... :rotfl2:

Debra - Okay, okay, I only voted to put the mixer on hiatus because no one had shown up for 2 weeks, and I didn't want you spending huge amounts of time thinking of questions and posting them for no one to answer. All of a sudden people are arriving en masse! I LOVE the mixer! Keep 'em coming! The resort of choice is POFQ, for the 3rd year in a row. I'm waiting on confirmation from Anthony Travel now, but she said there shouldn't be a problem if I gave her a couple of days to work out the details.

As for the mixer questions:

1) I'm most looking forward to the Richmond Marathon on 11/14. Our Galloway group has a huge number of people running both the full and the half, and it will be almost like a WISH event. I'm rooming with one of my running mates, and there are 4 or 5 of us who've committed to doing the marathon together. There will be plenty of partying before and after, so it should be a great weekend.

2) Marathon weekend will be our first Disney trip without DD, so it will be an entirely different atmosphere for us. I'm looking forward to doing the Half as an experienced runner this time, since in '08 it was my first big race ever. And I HOPE to be able to do this race without prior injuries, so I can actually do it for time if I want to! Other than that, I want to see as many WISHers as possible, and be a smiling face during the full for as many people as possible.

Jackie

Two questions:

  1. What event have you committed to that you're most looking forward to, Disney marathon weekend excluded? And
  2. What are you most looking forward to about Disney marathon weekend, if you are attending?

Excluding Disney, I am looking forward to the San Antonio Rock n Roll Marathon. I entered last year, but was only able to run the half due to my recovery from an auto collision last summer. This year I have re-entered and am preparing to begin ramping up my training next week. Also, and more so, I am looking forward to my first Half Ironman in Austin (Longhorn Half Ironman) in late October, so training for Longhorn will also be cross-training for the marathon.

At Disney, I am looking forward to meeting all of you and turning some of :grouphug: into the real thing!

1. What event have you committed to that you're most looking forward to, Disney marathon weekend excluded?

Wow. Tough question. Disneyland Half, I'd say. Never planned on going back, but it sort of fell into my lap. Now I'll be there with other WISHers -- on my birthday! I have several other great races planned through this year and already into MARCH of next year! Whew!

2. What are you most looking forward to about Disney marathon weekend, if you are attending?

Seeing the special whatever they do for the "Perfect Goofys" -- I'm far from perfect, and my Goofys have been slow and decidedly unspectacular, but I have made it through and, God willing, I hope to see "the other side" of the finish line in 2010.

Thanks for the questions. I've enjoyed reading all the responses!

Hi Cousins! Love your mixers.

What event have you committed to that you're most looking forward to, Disney marathon weekend excluded?

This Thursday I leave for Seattle RnR. I can't wait to meet a friend I've reconnected with through FB and also to be with other WISH Team members. First time for me to Washington. Next event is DL half and first time there so equally excited.

And

What are you most looking forward to about Disney marathon weekend, if you are attending? (With sympathy :grouphug: to those who are not.)

I just love the WISH Team spirit! I'm looking forward to experiencing that. We have so many dedicated people who are there along the route and those participating who share conversation and time and support and...whatever is needed to get our fellow WISH mates through to the finish line. I can't wait to meet with our WISH Team in any encounter.

I'm going to ask for an off-topic indulgence for a moment from the mixer activities. I have asked some other so-called 'friends' (cough, cough...enablers) who are not helpful, so I'm coming to you, my cousins, for sage advice.

Please talk me out of signing up for Goofy. Please.

My ankle is bone on bone. Seriously. There is NO cushion in the joint and the only way to fix it is surgically. After each LR above 15 miles training for the full, I couldn't walk for a day. Seriously. I have no business even doing another full and was content with just doing halfs until the enablers got to me. I can't even train to walk both races...it's the overall mileage that kills me. I would be much better off doing the half and adding support on the full course. I would. Really.

Please make me stop.

Hi folks, first time to one of these. My name is Augie, and I am on the 3D's.

What event are you committed too that you are looking forward to?

Well, that happened last Saturday, I had signed up for this bike ride in Boston. It is called the Brewery to Brewery ride, sponsered by Harpoon, and it goes from their brewery in Boston to their brewery in VT. I first read of this two years ago in Bicycling magazine, at the time it was 136 miles. They have since increased it to 150, and added a real nice hill to climb! It is limited to 600 riders, and they said registration sells out fast. I tried registering for last year's ride, but I was in Switzerland at the time and by the time I got to register it was already full. This year I made sure I was there at the time of the start of registration, and I made it in. So I was looking forward to this for the last six months. Being sponsered by a brewery, of course there is beer at the end, along with a nice barbeque and a live band. So now I am looking forward to next year's ride.

As far as the second question regarding the Disney Marathon weekend, well, this being my first, I do not know what to expect, except it will be fun! I look forward to meeting my fellow Ducks, and others that I have met on this thread. I am only signed up for the half, I am more of a biker than a runner, though I do several road races, mostly 5K's. But January can't come soon enough. I think the Disney touch will make this a fantastic weekend! I should also add, (in regard to the first question) that I signed up for the ToT also, so that should be a lot of fun as well.

Just a couple of responses, then I'm off to visit other threads! :thumbsup2

Kate: First race together with DBF, all red-faced and sweaty and competitive? Now that's real commitment! :lmao: :goodvibes

Jackie: I can SO hear your DH saying that. You've got a great sense of humor, the both of you.

Maura: I tend not to commit to anything far in advance, especially races, so I understand. I think you picked a good race, though, and super-cool about the qualifying rule. Congrats.

Vicky and Lily: ITA that races with friends make the event something to extra special. I look forward to seeing Wendy on the course, as she always looks like she's having a good time. And maybe this year I'll get to hang with Matt for a while.

Richard: I'm not much of a hugger in real life, but for you I'll make an exception!

Augie: I love the idea of a Brewery to Brewery ride. That sounds like fun, and I'm telling DOOD all about it. Thanks! :woohoo: (Oh, and loved ToT as a night race--very different for me.)

As for me: I'm not particularly excited about any upcoming events, except marathon weekend and for obvious reasons, so it's a good thing I'm asking the rest of you. I'll just coast off your excitement. I guess if I had to pick it would be the Baltimore 1/2, just because of the travel. All the rest are local.

Regarding marathon weekend, OF COURSE I want to see you all, so the POP meet, dessert party, etc. spring to mind. But I think, race-wise, I'm most looking forward to gathering before the events in the early, early a.m. and feeling the excitement build alongside WISHers. I've missed those opportunities for the most part (Jackie and her DH's wonderful company excluded). And in a silly personal note, I'm really, really happy my ILs will not be with us this year. They've been with us the past two marathon weekends, and as much as I appreciate their spectating enthusiasm their presence I'm looking forward to more free time.

Special Shout-Out to Mel: Oh, sweetie, I'm the last person to try to talk you out of the Goofy, for two reasons. 1) I'm doing Dopey, so obviously I'm insane; and 2) misery loves company, and you're very good company to have. So my first instinct would be to tell you to go for it!

THAT SAID, I feel obligated to try and talk sense into you (do as I say, not as I do). You know a marathon comes as a great physical cost to you with your ankle. The Goofy will put more strain on it. I'm pretty sure your doctor would have a thing or two to say about your plans, might even volunteer to schedule your surgery post-Goofy then and there.

And it might help to ask yourself about the cost of doing Goofy. Not the $$$$, the other costs. Sure, there's your ankle. But you know that and you're still tempted. (I understand, I do!) But what about the cost to your other activities? How much of your dua/tri training would you have to give up, put off, or risk in training for the Goofy? And what about your family time? The thing that really makes me balk about the Goofy is the time training over the holidays. How does that work for you, between work, kids' obligations, family time, a love life? :lmao: And last, but not least, what about the cost in terms of your maximum WISH enjoyment? Would you be able to enjoy yourself on day 2 and/or all the ancillary events we're tentatively planning?

So, there you go. My best attempt to be reasonable. But just know...if you decide to go Goofy, I'm behind you--or at your side--100% of the way. I'd be proud to hang with you on the course.

Hello cousins! It;s been crazy around here with DD "graduating" from kindergarten-- yes, I cried, I'm a sap and will really miss the teacher she had for the past 2 years. We met her new teach today and DD seems excited about 1st grade so I guess all is well.

I think attendance is down at the mixers just because everyone has busy summer schedules, but I vote to keep em coming too.

As for events, I'm really looking forward to the DL 1/2. It will be a week vacation for us and DD's 1st trip to CA, so we are psyched about the whole thing.

Marathon Weekend is a whole other exciting thing-- we are doing Goofy:scared1: and I'm still amazed that I'm planning such a thing. We are staying at BLT and I've never stayed on the monorail before so that is cool. Seeing all of the supportive WISHers and accomplishing the task of Goofy will be awesome-- I can't wait (but really need to do some serious training first)

Mel - I'll argue from a purely selfish angle. Since Anne has decided to go Goofy, I was looking forward to hanging with you during the full in her spot. If you're not there, it just won't be the same! (However, having said that, I had the same moment of delirium when I sent my email to Anthony Travel. It was purely $$$ that kept me from saying "one Half registration, one Goofy registration!" If I'm going to do Indy with the WISH gang in May, I can't spend that much money in January.) But I agree with Debra - only you can know exactly what it will cost you in terms of time training and time lost in recovery afterwards. We'll support you no matter how crazy you choose to be! :)

Jackie

What event have you committed to that you're most looking forward to, Disney marathon weekend excluded?
Disneyland 1/2 is the other event I'm signed up for -- so I'll say that. :)

What are you most looking forward to about Disney marathon weekend, if you are attending? (With sympathy to those who are not.)

My first marathon to celebrate my 40th birthday!
Running through all the parks.
Meeting fellow WISHers!

My knee is totally messed up from running this weekend. Can't even walk on it. Gonna ice and rest.

Hey all... been having a pity party lately. Feeling incredibly.... FAT! Yah, I know, I am PG. But I get out of breathe sooner and I jiggle more!!!

MEL!!!! I AM NOT AN ENABLER (this year!!). I am serious, if you want to wait, I will do it with you! Otherwise I will have to pray that others go Goofy when I am ready!!!

Anyone else want to wait with me???

I'll wait with you... 2010 just doesn't work for me to go Goofy, but I'm definitely feeling the urge!

Jackie

Cool Jackie - I plan to run/walk it like everything else. I know you are run/walker also. I will snag you for talks next year... or the year after. Ughhh... who knows. I want to try the full again before I turn 40. Have to get this baby out, then I have 2 years to get it done!

OMG, I feel like that lady on Rock'n'Roller Coaster........."I hate all of you!"

Just when I am totally content with merely Scream-Teaming this year, you guys start talking Goofy and the bug is biting me again. I know the ING NYC is going to be the toughest thing I have ever done in my life....plus, I have to do it totally ALONE with NO WISHers there to cheer me on. Part of the process of getting through this is knowing that when I'm done, I'm REALLY done....and I can just do fun stuff in the future. My plan was to train so diligently because when all this is over, I will NOT have to train anymore. Now i'm thinking....what's another 2 months more? :scared1: If I train hard for NY, maybe I can just keep a base for the Goofy and skip that dreaded 20-miler just before the holidays. I don't give a hoot what my time is as long as I finish....and there will be so many of us doing it. OMG, both Mel and I really need to be talked out of this. I'm so addicted to bling. :sad2:

P.S. Don't let Nancy see the above remarks! She will truly never speak to me again. I am such a liar.....I never intend to be, but I am!

Deb: I would say to ease off on the mixer questions simply because I understand just how much work it is for you. Maybe we can just set aside Mondays as "Open House" days when all the other teams are encouraged to pop over and chat a bit......even though we know they're ALL welcome here ANYTIME!
BTW, I was sorry to hear you did not enjoy "Edgar Sawtelle". I haven't read it yet , but it's our next book club selection and I was looking forward to it.

Jen117: glad to know the pregnancy is progressing nicely

Jackie: congrats on Annie's graduation! Yay, you and Bill are almost empty nesters! Kudos on signing up for the half. I will be at WDW regardless since my daughter is doing the Goofy. If I don't do any events, we can Scream-Team together. I was planning on working at Red #2 which finishes early and then going out along the course to catch the WISHers. Quick Question: do you still have those photos that Bill took of me and John in front of the tree at the Test track lounge? I was going through my photo album and realized I had left a space for them, but never got them. (you can just email them.) Thanks so much!

Jeanne: Don't hate us, join us ;) Seriously, do what you feel you really want to. Decide how hard on your body the race really is and if you can do it without too much wear and tear and don't care about your time then I say go for it. If you feel it will be too much or you would get hurt then scream team and have a nice weekend, either way we will support you and cheer like mad for you in NYC even if we are not there in person.

I'm so jealous of all of you contemplating the Goofy. I don't even know if I'll be there for the full. :sad2:

Ok, I'm done feeling sorry for myself now. I think it's great that so many of my cousins are attempting such a feat! :cool1::thumbsup2:cheer2:

I haven't done anything crazy yet ;) I have an appt with the orthopedist on Fri so we'll see what comes of that. I'm am not really fabulous as following medical advice :rolleyes1

I just finished Rebecca based on your recommendations. It was really good...have y'all read any of her other books?

We've been going through the old school Star Trek movies from Netflix. Never realized how many things in the new movie came from Wrath of Khan.

Hi, Augie!

Where's Maria hiding?

Speaking of Star Trek, we noticed they have the original episodes on Netflix to stream live-- we've been watching them while we exercise at night-- very entertaining.:happytv:

I'm excited, there is actually a bit of sun in the sky today-- we haven't seen it all month, hopefully the weather will hold out and DD and I can goto the beach tomorrow on my day off:beach:
