Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

I HATE YOU ALL! :)

Tonight I come home from work, and DH innocently asks, "How much more would it cost to do the Goofy?" I just screamed. Then said, "you realize the entire WISH team is going Goofy this year right?" So... we're weighing the stupidity factor now, but I have this feeling..

Jackie

It's called group insanity...anyone else wanna join?

I think I got my sanity back! The night I decided I was possibly going to do the Goofy, I ended up having the most bizarre nightmares! I really would love the special medal, but I'm not going to do that to myself this year. I am putting so much focus on the ING NYC, I need to know that I'll have a nice break when it is over. Which means....... I may be the only person on the Scream-team this year!

Jackie: does that mean Bill is considering doing Goofy also? :scared1:

(BTW, did you see my previous question about the test track photos?)

I mailed the registration and saw the orthopedist. She thinks the knee is either IT band or torn meniscus. MRI once we get auth from my insurance. Stretch, ice, strengthening exercises. The ankle is what it is and will get worse with age as arthritis sets in. Surgery when needed.

Jeanne...I'm really excited for you for NY! Goofy will always be there for you. Kathy (Valentine) will be at MGM as will Pat's husband Jim. The WISH volunteer crew will disperse around the course after they finish their water stop.

JenB...we've been watching some of the old episodes of ST also. Last week, saw the one where Diana Muldaur appears waaaaay before she was Dr. Pulaski.

Way to go, Mel :cheer2:

Jeanne - Yes, Bill is considering Goofy as well. Actually, he's the one who had the nerve to say it. I was just thinking it. Once he put it into words, it was all over. Now I just have to call the girl at Anthony Travel and tell her that instead of 2 Half registrations and 5 nights hotel that we want 2 Goofy registrations and 6 nights hotel. Or, if she doesn't get back to me soon, I'll just do it all myself since I don't need her help now! And secondly, I'm STILL trying to get Bill to find his pictures from January. To give you some idea of his timeline, he just gave one of Annie's friends her sweet 16 pictures. She turned 18 this year. :lmao: So by January 2011 he may have located your picture. He downloads the cards to a laptop, and then forgets what he's done with them. :confused3 He saw your post, so maybe...

Mel - Way to go! Hope the knee is just IT band. Then it will just be lots of stretching and time, but nothing to completely sideline you if you're lucky! And I'm pretty sure I've read some of du Maurier's other books, but I'll be darned if I can remember any of them now. I just looked at some of the titles, and they look familiar, but that's all I can say!

Just finished a great 8.5 miler with the group. First time I can truly say that each time we finished a run interval that I wasn't waiting for the leader to say "it's a walk." I kept thinking "are we really running 2:30? We must be doing shorter intervals today!" And the last mile was almost all uphill, and I still was running strong at the end. Absolutely a non-stonker! Then we took the puppies for a 1.5 mile hike, so I should be able to claim a nap, but I have to go wait on AAA to tow the van home, since it died last night at the park where DD and I took our burgers for dinner. :sad1:

Jackie

Helloooooo, Cousins! We're coming up on the end of the month, which means I'll be stalking you soon. There are several cousins we haven't heard from, but I see you out in FB land. What, are you avoiding me? :lmao:

Announcements.

Tomorrow (Sunday) is Julie's Birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
:bday::cake::drinking1:banana::love:

I have so many wishes for you, Julie, but let me start out by saying I hope you have the perfect day tomorrow.

Richard has a Tri on Sunday. It's the Y Freedom Triathlon, Sprint Tri for those interested. Good luck, have fun, and I hope you survive the heat in good shape and with good humor. :thumbsup2

I'm updating the going Goofy lists to indicate the madness has spread (like butter? like the plague? hard to tell!) I think it will be good for all of us to have the support (accountability, pressure) while training. :cheer2:

I'm glad, Mel, that your doctor has given you the green light and some suggestions. Good luck on the tests and PT.

And Jackie, I can't believe that you're not only going to get to come to WDW (and party) but are going Goofy, too! I never would have thought Bill would be up for it. (Psst, don't tell him I said so, but he's gonna have to do a longer LR before tapering this year. :rotfl2:) And WTG with your most excellent, strong Galloway 2:30 run. Gotta love it when you finish strong and know it! P.S. More news, maybe pics, on Annie's graduation?

JenB: Have I told you how happy--and envious--I am of your DL 1/2, and the DL trip in general. You'll meet up with a lot of great WISHers ('Ohana and the extended family) and get to be at my happy place.

JenG: How's your knee? I know you've been smart and been resting and icing, so I'm hoping it's at 100%. I envy you, too, btw. :upsidedow

Jen: You're not fat, you're preggers! Not to argue with a pregnant woman...I'm not suicidal, you know. And yes, I do think Mel has just committed to at least two Goofys. 2010 and then YOUR year. :rolleyes1
Start the mental training now because you're on a deadline. :flower3:

Jeanne: Thanks for your concern for me, re: the mixers. I really appreciate it. As for Edgar Sawtelle, there is a lot to enjoy about the book, so don't let my disappointment deter you. It just had SO much good about it that I felt a little let down. Sort of how I have higher expectations for a Woody Allen film than, say, a Jerry Bruckheimer. And even a half-baked Woody Allen film has so much good in it that it's worthwhile, even while I'm holding it to higher standards. If that makes any sense.

I think I may have asked this already, but is the Greek going Goofy? I'm happy that you've decided to go the route that allows you to sleep peacefully at night. This way, you can fully concentrate on NYC as your end goal, the pinnacle of your career. (And then reevaluate afterwards, of course. :rolleyes1)

Mel: I have not (yet) read any more Du Maurier since Rebecca, but they're on my list. I still need to revisit Star Trek this summer, although I'll work through TNG before the movies or the original series. DOOD's never seen TNG, so it's a couples project. Much better than lawnwork. Oh, and Maria's on vacation. In Orlando. At the "other theme park," as part of the trip.

As for me: Having some motivation problems, but think it's the heat. Plus, DOOD's not here to kick my sorry booty into gear. Or I'm in denial about Goofy training. A combination of the above, perhaps. Is anyone here going to use the Bingham/Hadfield Goofy training program? It's kinda pricey...

In other news that I have to share, two things:
  1. I rescued a bird the other day. The door to my apartment building had been propped open and it must have flown in. Once inside, it flew up to the top floor and got trapped. All the windows have screen in them. It kept flying toward the open, screen windows and was panicking. Anyway, it took me about a 1/2 hour, but I trapped it & released it. It flew away, uninjured. Yay me.
  2. I am the proud aunt of my first (and only) niece. (No nephews, either.) My brother and sister-in-law had a very long Friday night, and she was born early this a.m. Now, I'm not going to go on endlessly about how perfect she surely is, or any of that stuff. I'll just let this picture speak for itself:

Scuse me????

Oh duh...forgot. We were at DTD yesterday to meet BIL who's vacationing with the fam in orlando. It's hot...and gross.

uh-uh...I'm too cheap

Congratulations Auntie Debra...she's beautiful! and congratulations on saving the bird. I catch and release all kinds of critters at home and work.

Happy Birthday Julie!!!!!!

Richard...how was the tri?

Hello O'Hana Cousins...

Just Warrior Tracy (the keeper of teams miles and times) stopping by:

Popping in with a end of the month reminder....

1. Please start a new thread for next month.
2. On the first post of the new month, place your teams total miles and times for your team.
3. Post on that thread if the totals include everyone from your team or if you are missing some. I will keep checking that first post until you say you have pretty much everyones numbers.

Thanks so much!!

Then when I have every teams numbers I will update the teams totals thread!!

Thanks in advance for everyones help with this!!

WISHers ROCK!!!

Racey Tracy

Happy Birthday Julie!!!

Mel, Debra - THanks for thinking of me. It was good and hot!!! 81 degrees at 545 Am while driving to the race!!!

Got to get out of the hotel now, more later!

Thanks for the birthday wishes, my cousins! :thanks:

Debra - Congrats on your new niece. She is absolutely beautiful! Sometimes newborns have that pink, wrinkly look to them, but she doesn't. She is gorgeous. :goodvibes

Richard - How was the tri? I can't wait to hear all about it. Oh, and I'm still waiting for you to send some hot weather this way.

Mel - I'm so impressed that you're going Goofy. :thumbsup2 Wasn't it just a few months ago that you said you would only do halfs (or is it halves?)?

I'm off to chase my 2 yr old and get him ready for bed. I haven't been running much lately, but chasing after him is definitely good exercise.

I'm Baaaaack! :woohoo:

Hey Cousins!

I just read through the whole thread and caught up. I promise to post any and every detail of interest about our trip later, probably much later this week when I finally catch up at work and *crosses fingers* everything is quiet.

I'm so glad I missed the Goofy frenzy! You guys are crazy, but I'm so proud of you! No Goofy for this girl!

Debra -- Your niece is gorgeous! I promise to post in every upcoming mixer. Now I'm home, I'm here to stay for months on end... ::yes::

Julie -- Happy Birthday! party: I hope it's been super-fantastic!

Richard -- I'll hug ya, buddy! My dh will stand there and shake his head, laughing on the inside at us crazy WISHers!

Mel -- Seriously, how do you train in that heat?! We left Boston 6/18, and it was 65. We landed in Orlando and it was 95. It was over 100 (with the heat index) for most of our trip. If we hadn't been freezing in Boston, I would have not been happy. As it was, I was just grateful to see sunshine! :goodvibes

Jackie -- I hope the van repair is quick and painless... :thumbsup2

JenB -- DS took a disc with 4 classic Trek episodes to watch on the dvd player. He thinks the early Klingons looked pretty lame. He now understands my "Trouble with Tribbles" ornament. I am such a sucker, I'm sure the Hallmark guy giggles with glee when he sees me coming.

Jen -- Glad things are going well with the construction project. More jiggle now means little wiggles later! ;)

Ok, so a little about my trip. I managed to work out 3 of the 5 times I had planned, and I ran every time. The hotel gym was so hot, I left the incline at 0 to compensate. Dennis thinks they didn't have any air on. They must have had some, but it clearly wasn't cool or enough. I ate way, way too much of everything. I can still fit in my clothes, so that's something. I haven't been on the scale yet, I'm saving that precious moment for tomorrow. Before I left I told myself I had July to get back to my pre-vacay weight, so that will be my goal. I'm not pushing myself like I did right before I left, but I am going to have a significant reduction in calories this week. I guess Friday we'll now how really bad it was when I weigh in. I also resolved to lose another 25 lbs before the Half in January. I felt so much better about myself losing what I did before I left, I think 25 lbs would be incredible, and it's 5 per month (starting with Aug.) -- I'm on the Jeanne plan!

Speaking of Friday, that's the day I start coaching on the BL thread -- which means I have to come up with a Question of the Day every day of the week. Hmmm. Other than Corinna, hppefully not many people will notice if I recycle some of Debra's :rotfl2:

Ok, gotta stop rambling and continue the :laundy:. I took tomorrow off from work so I could catch up on a ton of stuff, so hopefully I'll get to catch up on this and other threads tomorrow. We had 375 e-mails, so I'm sure I have to deal with some of those, too! :surfweb:

Maria :upsidedow

I was born here...don't know any different :upsidedow

It's been unusually hot the past few weeks though. I looked back at my running log from this time in 2007 and it was 75 degrees at 7 am, not 81 like it has been lately.:scared:

Glad to see you back! Good luck with your coaching!

Jackie...we haven't had a doggie update from you in awhile.

I have a nearly pristine copy of Jeff Galloway's Marathon: You Can Do It! if anyone is interested. Just PM your address and I'll pop it in the mail. If no one wants it, I'll offer it up to the general membership.

Here is my Race Report for the Y Freedom Tri today in Pearland, TX. (No, I don't know if Pearland is called that because of anything to do with pear growing, although Sugarland, TX's named is derived from the business of the sugar industry there....)

I knew it could be one of those days when I opend the door and felt the warm air at 530 this morning. On the way to the race site, I saw a store signboard showing a temperature of 81 degrees at 545AM.
Transition setup and chip pickup were easy and pain-free, with my row being in the middle--even if I were to the outside edge. The race started on time, and was generally well run, IMHO.
The swim was a 300 meter pool swim with racers being staggered every 10 seconds for 3 out and backs in a 50 meter pool. All swimmers were seeded based upon their projected swim times. I was passed by one swimmer and I passed 3 others, so I figure I was in the right spot and finished pretty much right at my projected time. I crossed into T1 transition and had an easy transition, not being competitive for an award, I took my time to get ready and headed out on the bike. I was able to keep a good pace up on the bike, but started to feel the heat. I had decided to pack Gatorade in my water bottle, which was a good move with all the heat to keep my nutrition better balanced. I was finishing the Gatorade as I neared the return to the transition area without touching my other bottle (with water). In the end I finished the 12 mile bike in a time that satisfied me and was glad that even though I was feeling the heat, I was able to keep pushing a pace when I wanted. T2 was much quicker, although I would have been more comfortable losing an extra 1:30 to change socks, but I was fine without doing so. I did decide that I should bring my full 4 bottle water belt to make sure I was never without water, and 1 nearby racer wished aloud that he had done the same. Early in the run I realized that I am pushing 80-85% of max heart rate, so I decide to do a 3 minute run/1 minute walk pattern to keep the heart rate down a bit (or at least to keep from killing myself). I was pretty much running 12:30 miles until slowing a bit near the end, although I could not help but sprint across the finish to beat out two other runners (although they were not in my AG). I did manage to do the 3 miles in 38:27. I really would have liked better, but it was hot, I did more walking than I normally would have and I had not run in 2 weeks to rest a sore knee. All that considered I should be happy I could run at the end! Finally I finished with a time of 1:33:08 for the 300 meter swim/12 mile bike/3 mile run triathlon.

In the end, the last finisher was a runner dressed as the Statue of Liberty, who was the designated final finisher. (Yes, they did market the race to first-timers as promising they would not finish last!;))

All in all, I enjoyed the event, but really would have liked my weather to have been more normal (even for the Houston area!). I think today was another 100 + degree day. Even being generally acclimated to the weather here, I still found the conditions challenging.

Thanks for the report, Richard. It sounds like a successful race, especially given the heat. Congratulations!! :cool1:

:stitch:'Ohana Monday Mixer:stitch:

Ah, it's summer. The 4th of July is right around the corner. Summer always strikes me as the time for family vacations and road trips. And I'm sure many of us who are traveling are either participating in races--and :worship: to those of you doing events in the summer heat--or we're continuing to train. So...these random thoughts made me think about the challenges of traveling for WISHers, whether traveling to an event or for other reasons.

This week's mixer asks you to share your best tips and strategies for traveling. We're interested in all things related to staying active on the road, from packing your gear to what kind of exercise you prioritize while squeezed for time and in unfamiliar territory.

A sampling of possible questions: What are the must-brings? How much to pack? How to pack your gear--tips and mistakes to avoid? How to best deal with bulky shoes and stinky clothes? What kind of XT do you do while away from home--do you have anything you bring with you?? What about your guidelines for running/walking in areas with which you're unfamiliar?

I'll probably ask a race-specific traveling question closer to January, but tips on race packing are always appreciated. And those of you who are on the road frequently, for business or pleasure, your expertise is much appreciated. :thumbsup2

I'll be back for the mixer later, friends, but I wanted to put a question out there for some advice. I am seeing fares at $278 for travel between Houston and Orlando for my marathon trip in January. My area really doesn't get the low fares that some other areas see, and this would neither be the most nor the least I have paid for a trip at that fare rate. Based upon the needs of a family member, we need to fly non-stop, which means Continental or Southwest, both of which are currently at $278 (although Southwest is only booking through Jan 8 at the moment), and we lived closer to the airport that Continental flies from (IAH).

I plan to fly out on Jan 2 and back on Jan 12, but do have some flexibility on the exact travel dates and would like to be there about 10 days.

Any input is appreciated.

Well, I'm the last person who should answer the mixer question, since I never maintain a training or exercise schedule on the road--after all, it's VACATION! And I tend to take the word literally. No work (not a problem), eat what you want (within reason), sleep late (although I can't seem to do that anymore).

The best thing I do while away is walk. And tha's a pretty common thing if you're hiking or visiting museums or Disney. My (vacation-minded) rationale is that I gate enough walking in during a day to consider it exercise.

So pack some comfy shoes, some decent socks and it's time to roll! (Which I will be doing in less than 48 hours)

Now all of you much better disciplined people must show us slackers how to REALLY answer the mixer thread.

Maura

Hello 'Ohana cousins!! Hmm ... I don't think I've ever exercised on vacation before. :cutie: Just walking but I think that exercise gets cancelled out with all the eating I usually do. I'm going to WDW in October and will probably have to get some running in as I have a 10K race the following weekend when I return.

As for packing, I just buy everything when I get there :) Ha-ha! Just kidding! Well, sort of. I live in Canada and we don't really have outlet malls so I tend to go a little nuts shopping. I usually take a week's worth of clothes and then I'll pack one outfit into those really big Ziplocks. Less thinking involved that way and I can use them to pack the stinky stuff on the way back. Anything that doesn't fit into my suitcase goes into DF's

For the 1/2 this past January, I packed all of my racing gear into my carry-on but wore my running shoes. I did that just in case my suitcase went missing. I also packed a few extra items in case of cold weather. I think my only item I can't live without is my flat iron, everything else can be bought and replaced :)
