CE - caveat: I'm all about simplicity when it comes to dressing up, so take my opinion with a grain of salt!
I really like the shape and drape of the first style on you. It looks like it flows beautifully, hugging curves when it moves without being overly tight. I totally think you could wear it, or look for a similar shape and fabric - maybe sleeveless to show off your tennis arms? As for dressing it up, easy-peasy: strappy sandals and either a crazy-interesting piece of jewelry or crazy-interesting clutch bag. 
And, for the record, I'm insanely jealous that you get to go to an event at the Art Institute.

We filled out an application and everything so far. It looks like one of the cats and the guinea pig will be illegal though.
