Team 8 Jessica's Rabbits Bios and Info

Thanks for the encouragement. Just a little nervous right now.

It's the Chicago Distance Classic which is a Bingham race so will get Penguin Bling! Also very walker friendly which is good for my first one. Keep reminding myself that goal is to finish - anything is a PR. Going to set with a pace group to avoid going out too strong at the start.

Now to get thru taper. Already trying to figure out how the heck I'm going to walk/bike only 30 min each day. That's warm up!

Yup, late reporting again, but the miles this time !!!:woohoo:

July 15-21
22.56mi
2.7 hrs

July 22-28
59.29 Miles
6.0 hrs
Includes Waterfall Glen Xtreme 10 trail race (10.3 x 2)
And a 30 mile bike event, the Naperville Bike Club's Melon Metric.
A Metric half century for us both !
Liz's first ever, my second.

Amazing results everyone.

With these numbers, we just went over 10,000 miles. Congratulations to everyone. Based on what I know about everyone in the group, and I know many of you pretty darn well, I think we as individuals should be pleased with our state of training. I get the impression that nearly every one of us is well beyond his or her "typical" fitness level right now, so barring injury, we may produce some nice results in those events between now and January 10-11.

Rich, you are an amazing dude. Those results are massive and consistent. Consistently massive?

Liz

Good luck with CDC. Is Patrick participating as well. My wish for you is a coolish and dryish day (in Chicago? In August?).

Patrick

Okay, I'll bite. What is a metric half century?

Way to keep on Steve. From your reply to Martha, does that mean you'll be at the Disney Marathon weekend?

Howard, you are one improving machine.

I need to shout out to Martha with her speed work. Geez, intervals under 10 mpm? I'll point out to all that in her first half marathon she finished in 2:33, followed by a 2:27 a year later. With speed work under 10, running 11 mpm will feel like floating, which would bring her in at 2:24:13. So along with Howard we have 2 improving machines here.

Steve and Krista

Check in when you can. How is the little dude? When you show him off to your running friends you 3 will cause a sensation.

Okay, here is the much anticipated report on Craig's health, sorry for the length.

In the 80's when I was running a lot, and pretty fast too, I had real troubles with plantar fasciatis. I have wicked high arches, and when the arch flexed the connections at the heel and ball got sore and began to calcify a bit. I got these rigid orthotics which supported my feet, and presto, no PF.

So I go back to running in 2003 and don't use the orthotics. I'm slower, and for years I congratulate myself that the PF isn't bothering me.

Well, I was at a custom/medical shoe store last week, and along with shoes I had the good fortune of having 2 podiatrists help me out. I walked around and they commented on the arches, and pointed out when I stepped the arch flexed down, which put stress on the outside of my calf muscles. EUREKA  . That's were I've been having calf muscle strains and tears since 2004. I'm a total dope. I know biomechanical problems can cause offset injuries, but I never ever thought the calf problems could be caused or enhanced by my high arches and not using the orthotics.

So I used newer and firmer inserts on Sunday, and the old rigid orthotics in today's effort. I jogged 1 minutes super easy, then jogged 4 minutes a bit faster, and repeated for 4 miles, finishing in 46:36, or 11:39 per mile.

Right now I feel beyond euphoria. Yes, I'll take it easy, with my next jogging effort on Sunday, but to be under 12 mpm 17 days after the last injury and have no difficulty, AND MAYBE have figured out how to work with this calf thing, is pretty darn satisfying.

Yay Team on passing 10,000 Miles!!!:dance3:

Craig - Woo Woo! Glad you figured it out and are feeling so much better!

Yeah, Chicago in August. Weather can do just about anything. We are forecast to be 90-95 and humid thru this weekend so just hoping it cools a bit before next Sat. (yikes - can't believe it's that close already) And yes, Patrick is doing it as well. Should be done about an hour before me. :sad2:

Martha - WTG on that speed work!

Rich - amazing as always. Have you done a century ride? We're looking at doing a metric century in Sept and Patrick would like to do a century next year. He's on his own for that one - I'll sag.

Keep up the great work everyone!

Liz never did a century ride maybe someday. Training now for a Half in October in Akron Ohio. I'm think about maybe a tri but not sure about the swimming.

Rich - I'm going to do a sprint tri next summer. Been told the swimming is no one's strongest part. I'm a good swimmer and plan on taking classes over the winter to increase strength and stamina. Our health club has classes specifically for adults looking to do a tri.

Craig,
In the good old days, when I was but a teen biking machine, I participated in a Half century in Oyster Bay, Long Island. Nothing but hills.
Back then, there were no "metric" rides. A Century Ride was 100 miles, and a half was, of course, 50 miles. (I still have my League of American Wheelmen half century patch.)
Now, since the metric system caught on SO WELL in the ol' US of A, we now have Metric Century and half metric century rides.. A glossed up way of reducing the distance, since 100 klicks is only 63 miles or so, and 50k is only 32 miles.
Always strikes me as odd: Why do we have races of all sorts named by metric distance, and marked in miles ? Why not mark it the way it is named? European Tradition meets American Stubbornness?
Inquiring Minds want to know...
Anyone care to shed a little light on that one ? Or am I the only one that finds it odd?

And yes, I will be doing the CDC with my Sweetie.. Not finishing an hour before, maybe just 30 mins..

Regards and Kudos to all !
Patrick

Hi guys...sorry I've been remiss...here are my numbers :). I'm in full-on Half Marathon training for the Applefest Half Marathon in early October. I'm also planning to get more road bike miles in so August should be pretty productive for me. Hope everyone is well, especially Krista, Steve and Carter!! :)

7/22- 7/28
:
Miles: 35
Hours: 8.5

7/29 - 7/31
Miles: 33
Hours: 4.7

Craig...it's great to see you getting out there :). I'm glad the inserts helped, IMO that's a pretty awesome pace considering the extent of your injury! Hope you're feeling better each day!

Scott...nice to see you back out there! SO GLAD that you are back out there running and biking. I'm happy to hear that your foot is healing nicely and you avoided surgery. Yay! :)

Liz..awesome that you are doing a tri! I chickened out as I was planning on one this summer. The swim has me nervous despite the fact that I'm a pretty strong swimmer.

Steve...nice to see you posting your numbers...great job!

Patrick...GREAT NUMBERS!

Rich....impressive yet again! Love to see those numbers...totally amazing to me!

Martha...no way girl...you are not slow :). Hope you are doing well!!! :goodvibes

Way to keep on Steve. From your reply to Martha, does that mean you'll be at the Disney Marathon weekend?

No, unfortunately I won't. I'll be at the Disneyland Half Marathon but that's not until Labor Day Weekend '09. Our next three trips to WDW are already pretty much set in stone.

I went to WDW during a marathon weekend a few years back. It was long before I ever thought about running. I remember being stuck in a hot, crowded bus to Magic Kingdom, basically parked on the road waiting for marathon traffic to clear. I just remember thinking to myself, "Who in their right mind would come all the way to WDW to run?" Now I'm jealous of those same people and look forward to the day I become one!

I just ran a 7-mile race today. It was my longest race to date. My goal was to beat the 11:14 pace I set for my 10K in May. Despite finishing near the back of the pack, I'm actually surprised and very proud of how I did because of the brutal hills and how quickly it warmed up outside. I ended up finishing at 1:12:25, a 10:20 pace. :woohoo:

It was difficult but gave me a good deal of confidence that I'll be ready for my first half marathon in a couple of months.

Great numbers gang! Keep up the good work. You are definitely inspiring me to get out there and train more and I can use all the help I can get!

Hello Everyone

Thanks for the numbers. I am caught up to this point. If you guys have July 29-31 information for me, please send it along and I'll include it in the July master log.

AmyBeth

So you're doing the autumn applefest half marathon? I hope you get one of those perfect new england days for the race. I would love to take part, but I assume it's 9 weeks away and I am only up to 5 right now post-injury, so I just don't see how I would be ready. Maybe I'll reasses this in a few weeks if all goes well.

Patrick

Perhaps I should focus on a metric marathon, 26.2 kilometers. That distance is really the limit of my strong racing anyway.

Liz and Patrick

Good luck in 1 week on the CDC.

AirTime Steve (we already have Cincinnati Steve)

Great work on those 7 miles. You're a lot stronger than you think.

I can again report a favorable training run today. I've been really good with my weekly workouts, lots of weight work, biking, stretchinh, icing, and 2 measly runs. Today I covered 5 at 10:36 per mile, at comfortable pace the entire time. The leg never hurt, in fact, it felt very good. I eased off the pace from time to time to let the muscle have a break, and got a good result.

Best

Craig

Hi Team...

Craig...Great job on the runs this past week! And yes...Applefest is on Aug 4th I believe. I truly hope we get one of those picture perfect fall days! I'm very much looking forward to this favorably reviewed race :).

You'll be happy to hear that I did some speedwork today ;). I hit the track and did a 5 Mile overall run. One mile to warm-up, 1600 @ 8.05, 800 recovery jog, 1600@ 8:37, 800 recovery jog; one mile cool-down run. Overall time was 48:22. It was HARD. The mile speed training is really brutal. Glad it's over ;).

Airtime Steve...GREAT race..that is a fantastic pace for a 7 mile race. WTG and congrats!!!!

Have fun at Applefest (whichever weekend you decide on!) ;)

Liz, best of luck and have a great time at your first 1/2 next weekend. You'll have to let us know all about it!

Craig, great job getting back up to speed safely. It sounds like you are doing a perfect job.

Here are my numbers from July 29-31:

Running
12 miles
2:52

Strength Training
0:30

I was wondering if there were any good books or websites anyone here can recommend for me. It's hard for me to find time to run outdoors more than once a week so I've been training primarily on my treadmill. I generally have picked a good, slightly challenging pace and then stuck with it for a fixed number of miles. It's good exercise but I don't think I'm really improving much.

I've been trying to learn more about different kinds of speed and interval training but my head is starting to spin. Some sources say I shouldn't be doing these until I've been training for at least a year. Some say I should be doing these now since I have a 1/2 coming up. I'd like to improve my endurance, hill-climbing ability, and speed.

So, does anyone have any good resources you can point me to that have helped you? TIA! :goodvibes

Anyone care to shed a little light on that one ? Or am I the only one that finds it odd?

I have always wondered that myself. I prefer to say 5K and 10K as they sound longer! :thumbsup2

What is still throwing me off is when I'm reading at how many meters I should be changing up my training. I understand 400m, 800m, etc. but my mind can't process what resting 10m or 12m is while I'm running. Maybe I need to find a calculator watch with a built-in heart rate monitor...

I went to Vancouver BC a number of years ago and, as expected, everything was metric. The only thing I found odd was that an amusement park we went to had their height requirements measures in inches. Everything else was metric. :confused3

Scott or Amy where is Applefest. I'm always looking for new runs and thats around the time I'd like to do another Half.

Airtime great job nice numbers.:thumbsup2 It always great to beat your goal and set a new PR way to go.

Craig great to here you back up and running and solved the problem.

Has anyone heard how Steve, Krista and the Baby are doing.

Okay to mileage

Running
July 28th-July 31st
30 miles
4.45 hours

Biking
80 miles
5 hours

Have a great week and be safe.:thumbsup2

Rich

Rich...Applefest is in Hollis, NH right on the border of Massachusetts :). It is supposed to be a great event. There is a great review/article on the race in Cool Running.

Scott & AmyBeth - so good to see you both back and doing really great!

Rich - last I heard Steve, Krista and Carter were doing just fine and Krista was getting pretty good at doing things one handed.

Craig - great job on those runs and work outs! So glad you figured out what to do quickly.

Airtime Steve - Fantastic pace on that race!

Not much to report here other than really, really missing my workouts. Four months ago I thought the training plan was trying to kill me. Now it's torturing me with only 30 min 3x this week.

So for July 29-31
Miles 8.3
Hours 1.1

Did more end of week and over weekend but still within training plan...mostly. Just a little extra swim time. :rolleyes1
